Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

Young changes position (on changing positions)?

What's up with that?  Is Josey's position going to be that Nolan came in with some Texas high heat and straightened things out?  Or something else?  Place your bets now!

I still don't think that, ultimately, the net benefit is going to be that great, although considering our struggles in obtaining decent DH's over the years, maybe it will.  Young's no Richard Hidalgo.

From Grant:
The Rangers, however, seem to have interest in having a versatile player capable of playing multiple positions as their prime DH. GM Jon Daniels said during a press briefing Monday that such a player is the primary reason the Rangers haven’t acted more decisively about bringing back Vladimir Guerrero. Guerrero, who turns 36 in February, was limited to DH duty. His attempts to play the outfield during the World Series were costly to the Rangers on defense.

That’s putting it lightly.

Guess I was too out of the loop during the whole Young to 3rd fiasco.

However, to me, this situation is different. I’m not defending Michael, but I’m sure he understands how good of a 3rd basemen Beltre is, and the might simply be conceding to the superior talent.

I think the Andrus experience showed Young

that he could trust that this sort of thing might be for the best. He’s proud, he’s not stupid.

I completely understand being reluctant to move off SS in your prime for a 20 year old. He felt a bit blindsided, reacted negatively and then came around. I’ve bagged on Young occasionally, defended him occasionally when I’ve felt it’s gotten a bit ridiculous, but you know, if Andrus flops, are we all still calling for Young’s head?

The organization decided to take a big risk with Andrus, and they asked one of their core players and a guy who was pretty much a team icon to step aside to do so. Ballsy for all involved. It worked out, but we shouldn’t pretend that this was a slam dunk, no brainer move.

Different sources?

Though these quotes come from Young directly… interesting. Very interesting.

I give Young credit for making his decision — and his statement — quickly. Even given the lack of specifics, this report (despite the initial report and the first go-round) affects the way I view Young’s capacities as a leader.

by Josh Garoon on Jan 3, 2011 10:59 PM CST up reply actions

Who wants to play third base?

It is a really tough position to play, in my opinion, and has been known to make some pretty decent players look bad. Perhaps Young didn’t mind getting away from the “hot corner.”

I used to play first base, and I don’t think it is that tough to play if they want him to lay there. Obviously he can play second if and when Kinsler gets injured. Or he can just hit as a DH. He’s got a whole spring training to work on the positions he might be playing.

by Philar on Jan 5, 2011 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

People are just looking for a reason to hate the guy

He gets eviscerated for a non-story about him not being giddy about moving, then when he agrees to move he’s mocked for flip flopping just to look good? This is very strange.

I hate to side with the “LSB folks hate Young too much” crowd, but in many cases it is uncalled for…

The team’s longest tenured guy agreed to move to DH if it meant landing Beltre. Give the guy some credit (even though he ruined my personal plan to block the signing…)

It’s a big career decision. I am sure he doesn’t want to be type cast as only a dh now. He won’t be able to make as much scratch on his next contract, then if he was still considered a position player.

Read his quotes, too

there isn’t any hint of selfishness. Not even the slightest.

The sum total of what we know about MY and position changes:

1) He volunteered to move to SS
2) He balked at moving to 3rd because he thought JD was telling him to move. But he did
3) He apparently had initial hesitation (maybe) but seems pretty emphatic about moving off 3rd to unnamed position

What the fuck else is he supposed to do?

by coolaid on Jan 3, 2011 10:28 PM CST up reply actions

Why?

What did Young do that Grant can’t say that? Is this not his 3rd position change for the good of the team?

by ab03 on Jan 3, 2011 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

His first position move

was before he got a big pay day and was a move to what is generally regarded as the more premium position. His second move was met with a request to be traded and a month long hissy fit about how he was told to move positions to improve the team. This last one was at least rumored to have been met with similar reluctance, but it looks like Young made the smart move and is coming out being okay to switch positions. Its possible Young realized that he didn’t have another option, its possible that this time he realized that the front office knows what they’re doing, who knows.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I'm going to bed

the answer is 4 days. Jan 11th – News that Young requested a trade. Jan 15th – Young agrees to move.

I think 4 days is fine, especially since it didn’t involve Young making any statements to the media. I think, by definition, a fit is some sort of public display. At least, that’s what makes a fit really bad. He can bitch and moan behind closed doors all he wants as long as nobody else gets wind. When it came to light, he didn’t throw a fit – he just didn’t say anything for 4 days and then he agreed to move. He bitched at JD a bit for the way JD handled it and I guess you coudl be mad at him for that.

you seem to be giving Young a lot of the benefit of the doubt despite not having much evidence to do so

Not receptive might mean that, but even you have to acknowledge that it could also mean that he wasn’t willing to move positions but changed his mind. It doesn’t help anyone for Young to agree to move positions and for there to still be a messy “I’m not going to move” story out there, so I find it hard to believe that someone leaked Young being “not receptive” if Young just wanted to take some time to think about the move.

by ab03 on Jan 3, 2011 10:48 PM CST up reply actions

i think that, given the quick turnaround by Young,

I’m leaning towards the belief that Young being “not receptive” just meant that he wasn’t excited about it.

“Not receptive” is not the same as “unwilling”, which would have been a more concise description of his reaction that would not leave much open to interpretation.

And again

there was no “I’m not going to move story.” There was a “not receptive” story.

Your logic is circular. Not receptive must have meant unwilling because it doesn’t help anyone to put out an unwilling story unless he was unwilling.

it is the description of the circular reasoning

by ab03 on Jan 3, 2011 10:51 PM CST up reply actions

It doesn't have to mean that way

But I don’t find it as easy to believe as you do that the “not receptive” story was leaked and put out there by TR if “not receptive” meant Young wanted some time to think about the decision.

We’ll see if/when Beltre signs. I wouldn’t doubt Young’s willingness to change positions came about because he was told that Beltre was going to be here next year instead of Beltre might be here next year.

if Hamilton gets hurt we lose his bat

Thats where his value to us lies. His defense is great but his bat in our lineup is what we need. Borbon keeping Hamilton out of CF is tremendous for the team. Borbon plays good defense in CF and hes our #9 hitter so whatever he gives us on offense is gravy anyway. Last year from the time he was moved to the 9 hole he hit .290 with a .320 OBP. Does he have room to improve…absolutely. But last year was also his rookie season.

just like we run guys like Tommy Hunter out there every 5th day during the regular season instead of going with CJ and Colby on short rest. Those guys are better than Hunter but pitching on 3 days rest all season risks losing you to injury and then the team is fucked. Once we get to the playoffs then we can go with our absolute best squad but for the 162 game regular season Borbon in CF is a no brainer to me

If we had another option to play CF better than Borbon that wasn't Hamilton then fine lets analyze that

But if the question is Borbon or Hamilton as the everyday CF then my answer is Borbon. Keeping Josh healthy and his bat in the lineup is the top priority for the Rangers IMO. He can singlehandedly win ballgames with his bat. Borbon plays good Cf defense and provides league average production for his lineup spot so I don’t see why we should be risking Hamilton out there

by bigsteve on Jan 3, 2011 11:14 PM CST up reply actions

Borbon plays such good defense

that our coaching staff rarely let him play defense in 2009 and when we played Tampa, they were so impressed with his CF defense that they moved him to LF.

I think if the wall is high tech padded..

he protects his ribs with pads that worked so well for him and he DH’s plenty to keep his knees healthy you have a whole different set of cricumstances. Borbon is terrible with the bat, and can’t steal bases very well. What’s the point of having speed if David Murphy is schooling you on stealing bases?

The Rangers off season ineffectiveness is the new don't ask/don't tell.

by BigGuns on Jan 3, 2011 11:18 PM CST up reply actions

You do realize Borbon was a rookie last year right?

And his numbers after getting moved from leadoff were pretty close to league average for CF minus a little bit of power.

Let the kid develop some more and since hes not killing you from the 9 hole then why risk losing your MVP? It doesn’t matter how much padding the install hamilton seems like he has a nose for finding injury in CF. And unless they install this high tech padding all across the league then you are either going to have to run Borbon out there 81 times for road games or risk hamilton

by bigsteve on Jan 3, 2011 11:24 PM CST up reply actions

This is not true.

There’s a lot more opportunity to build up speed and cause more damage against the center field wall.

And beyond that, Josh was dealing with serious knee problems before sitting out all of September. CF means a lot more running and wear and tear on the knees.

He has missed significant time the last two years because of injuries he sustained while running into CF walls, he is too aggresive in CF

It is his natural ability coming back to bite him in the ass….

No, Hamilton in CF means you lose Hamilton to injuries each year, I am done with that.

by FormerLSBUser on Jan 3, 2011 10:39 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, it's not ideal

but they won their division and Hamilton won the MVP this year while missing a month. I’d say it’s pretty obvious that even a CF-induced injury to Hamilton isn’t season-killing to the team.

Did you forget the playoffs?

He was injured leading directly into the playoffs (he played like one or two games at the end of the year, DH’ed one of them), was not good in the ALDS, good in the ALCS, and not good in the WS. I think it is obvious he wasn’t 100%, he was having to wear a flack jacket to protect his broken ribs….

I want to avoid that if at all possible in the future.

by FormerLSBUser on Jan 3, 2011 10:42 PM CST up reply actions

and the team still made the World Series shockingly

Simple

It isnt worth the risk to have him play CF full time, or even the majority of the time.

It is an unnecessary risk, Borbon has the same range. If it is an issue of arms, you need to find a new CF, not Hamilton.

His bat is the supreme value to the team, not his defense. The defense is just a super added bonus. I would rather keep the bat and have him healthy for a full season, which he has yet to do as a professional.

That would be strange,

especially since he’s only guaranteed to hit lead-off once every game, and there’s a decent chance he’d lead off at least one inning out of 9 in each game, anyhow.

And even then, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to compare his stats in the 9-hole to other batters who hit in that spot.

by Texas Jihad on Jan 3, 2011 11:22 PM CST up reply actions

Ok lets look at CF then

AL CF in 2010

.262/ .322/ .403

Again Borbons numbers after gettign moved out of the leadoff spot

.294/.326/ .363

relying on a rookie to bat leadoff from Opening Day on was a terrible decision by management. I understand why we chose Borbon over Elvis from day 1 given how each performed in 2009. But it was obvious Borbon was not comfortable battign at the top of the order. I don’t know why, nobody seems to but once he was moved he ended up putting up a decent season. Sure he had hot and cold streaks but everybody does. His value lies in keeping Hamilton out of CF which in turn keeps Hamilton healthy and his MVP bat in our lineup.

by bigsteve on Jan 3, 2011 11:19 PM CST up reply actions

He wasn't all that comfortable hitting

in the 9 hole either.

by Josey Wales on Jan 3, 2011 11:23 PM CST up reply actions

So Borbon was well below the AL CF mean,

right? I mean, he’s giving up 40 points of slugging, and is practically a wash in OBP.

And that’s not park adjusted.

The numbers you posted (.294/.326/.363) puts him in the 90-94 wRC+ range, which would have been somewhere in the range of 13th among AL CFs with at least 100 PA.

by Josh Garoon on Jan 3, 2011 11:24 PM CST up reply actions

And hes hitting 9th and keeping our MVP out of a spot he seems to have a knack for getting injured in

I seriously don’t understand all the Borbon hate and why people want to see Hamilton out in CF so much.

If we had a different option i would be all for discussing it but right now in my eyes its either Borbon or Gentry. Hamilton isn’t even in the discussion.

Once we get to the postseason its a whole different story. At that point you put your best team on the field for that given series. If that means Borbon sits his ass on the bench thats fine. But for the 162 game regular season I don’t see any reason Hamilton should step foot out there any more than absolutely necessary

by Josey Wales on Jan 3, 2011 11:29 PM CST up reply actions

None of this addresses the point.

I don’t hate Borbon.

But first, you asked why, “comparing hitters to other hitters by batting order is just plain silly,” and I answered, and then you posted Borbon’s stats relative to other AL CF, even after he stopped batting leadoff, and I observed that they still weren’t especially good in comparison.

by Josh Garoon on Jan 3, 2011 11:34 PM CST up reply actions

They may not have been especially good

But they weren’t horrible either

He had an above average BA, similar OBP, and below average power numbers.

when you factor in he’s doing that out of the 9 hole, along with playing good defense at a critical position, and he keeps our MVP out of a hazardous position for him I can’t think why people would want Hamilton out there full time.

And I can understand not comparing lineup spots for most of the lineup. But the bottom part of the lineup I do think it has merit. You aren’t going to put one of your best hitters in the 8 or 9 hole which may skew the numbers. You generally put a player in that spot because he’s your worst overall offensive player so comparing the Rangers worst offensive player to the rest of the ALs I think does apply to a certain extent.

I still dont understand

Why is it impossible for Borbon to ever improve

I get it, i dont think he will ever be great

But i think he will always be a good defensive CFer which has a fair amount of value, and i think his bat has a chance of being at least solid.

I just dont understand why a certain crowd thinks there is 0% chance that he improves

wRC+ 81

One is treated like a God here and people talk about how much he will improve and he was even recently discussed as a possible Future HOFer…the other is apparantly the worst baseball player of all time

by Josh Garoon on Jan 4, 2011 12:22 AM CST up reply actions

I would ultimately agree on all of those

I would be pretty happy if Borbon just approached Gutierrez's ~7%BB

He’s probably never going to match Gutierrez’s ISO number from 2009, and there’s not much debate about arm strength/accuracy (although Gutierrez hardly has a cannon). On the other hand, his hit tool should allow him to put up higher averages than FGut.

Gutierrez doesn’t really make sense as a comp or as a projection.

I don't argue

that he won’t improve. I just see no reason to say he is the starter and Murphy is on the Bench, because it is also still possible for Murphy to improve.

Most likely, you’ll see them running in a rotation, and getting them all playing time, because that’s what Wash does, and then performance will dictate who plays more. I am absolutely fine with that. If that means Borbon plays 50 or 150 games, that is fine by me, but I suspect his games played will be closer to the middle of those 2 numbers.

Last year, yes.

I don’t know who all the LSB commentariat comprises — maybe you and Jamey can get together and draw up a list for me? — but the big differences are that Gutierrez has put up a couple 300+ PA seasons with 105-100 wRC+, and his defense is more highly touted than Borbon’s.

by Josh Garoon on Jan 3, 2011 11:55 PM CST up reply actions

Take it easy, slugger.

Didn’t mean to ruffle your feathers. I’ve been in enough GDTs to know that many on this blog think of Gutierrez as god-like, despite pedestrian offensive numbers over the course of his career. I’d think those same folks would be happy with “Guti”-lite. But, by God, we’ve got entrenched opinions to protect, right?

Just a joke.

And T Rex’s don’t have feathers.

I think you know I’m not as high on Gutierrez as some. I’m also not as down on Borbon as some.

But: Gutierrez has better defensive talent to fall back on than Borbon, and has also had a couple decent offensive seasons. Borbon has yet to prove that he can maintain a 100+ wRC+ over a full season, and until he does…

I mean, sure, ancestors of birds & all,

but:

t has also been proposed that Tyrannosaurus and other closely related tyrannosaurids had such protofeathers. However, skin impressions from large tyrannosaurid specimens show mosaic scales. While it is possible that protofeathers existed on parts of the body which have not been preserved, a lack of insulatory body covering is consistent with modern multi-ton mammals such as elephants, hippopotamus, and most species of rhinoceros. As an object increases in size, its ability to retain heat increases due to its decreasing surface area-to-volume ratio. Therefore, as large animals evolve in or disperse into warm climates, a coat of fur or feathers loses its selective advantage for thermal insulation and can instead become a disadvantage, as the insulation traps excess heat inside the body, possibly overheating the animal. Protofeathers may also have been secondarily lost during the evolution of large tyrannosaurids like Tyrannosaurus, especially in warm Cretaceous climates.

So you think he's all of a sudden less aggressive in left or right field and won't run into any walls there?

If there is any argument to be made to keep Hamilton out of center field, it would be that he has to cover less ground in the corner OF spots and it’’s probably easier on his knees.

by michael bluth on Jan 3, 2011 10:42 PM CST up reply actions

That

And his natural ability lets him get to all possible balls, and he doesnt have to push it.

I know this is a weird statement that couldn’t be proven, its just based on my observation.

Any player can be injured playing any position, including DH. But, we have two years and two serious injuries playing Center, I dont want him there anymore.

by FormerLSBUser on Jan 3, 2011 10:44 PM CST up reply actions

I don't necessarily want him in center either.

But more because I think it will help alleviate the strain and fatigue that playing center puts on his knees/legs by having to cover more ground. I think he’s just as likely to be injured running into a wall in left or right field as he is in center.

by michael bluth on Jan 3, 2011 10:48 PM CST up reply actions

This.

We’ve now seen Josh get hurt badly twice (re-injuring himself once on top of that IIRC) playing CF. We know his defensive style has him going 110% at every chance and that playing CF is only going to give him more of a running start before he runs into walls. Why would you want him playing there in the regular season?

The reality is

that Borbon’s defense makes him worth playing in CF even if the bat is going to be crap. He’s not the best CF in baseball or anything like that, but given the options available, he’s the best option we have for around 120 games or so if he’s going to simply reproduce his less than stellar numbers from last season.

My hope is that Borbon starts hitting and running the bases more like he did in the minors or his first stint in the Majors in 09. Its funny how some are just making that out to be impossible even though he’ll be just 25 next season and will be entering his 2nd full year in the Majors. I’m not betting on Borbon becoming Rickey Henderson or anything like that, but I’m willing to give him another chance being confident that he provides the team with good CF defense and has the talent to be a better offensive player than he was last season.

Good points

Davis might be the best comparison since we all know what he was able to do before 2009 and the hope that he could fix his problems a bit for 2010.

But otherwise, we have 647 PAs from Borbon in the Majors and 1255.2 innings in the outfield. The result so far, from this 24 year old who finished his rookie season last year, a .311 wOBA and a 7.5 UZR (8 DRS). That’s good for being worth 2 wins in that time. But yeah, its completely valid to say Borbon fits right in with guys like Arias, Botts, Salty, Boggs, and all those guys who have, to date, been unable to play a full season and be above replacement level (outside of Salty, they never even came close to a full season).

Rickie Weeks, Freddy Sanchez, Stephen Drew, Jason Bartlett, Scott Rolen,

The list goes on and on of guys ranked good by either DRS or UZR, and bad by the other, or mediocre by one, and great by the other.

Quite simply, there isn’t much data reliability to defensive stats, and the folks who treat them as gospel are a little misguided. Same with the folks who overrate WARs that are driven primarily by unreliable defensive stats.

As far as defensive metrics are concerned, I’m much more in favor of DRS and UZR and especially at looking at both of them together to get an idea. Since DRS incorporates human input, I’m probably more willing to give it a bit more weight than UZR. If you want to throw total zone in there, that’s fine too though I’m not as big a fan of its methodology as the other two (I know you thought Young has essentially been neutral defensively over the past 3 seasons).

Now if you don’t want to use any of that, then fine. I guess we’ll just have to go by the Cahill scouting system to get an idea of what a player was worth defensively.

Josey Wales is stupid

by Horns130 on Jan 4, 2011 12:42 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, they are used very differently.

UZR uses a 3-year baseline for one, where DRS goes year-to-year.
DRS separates it into smaller zones.
UZR has small adjustments based on batter handedness, pitcher batted ball profile, etc.
The way they adjust for ballparks is pretty different.
UZR accounts for all base/out states, where DRS just does double play for MIF and holding runner for 1B (I think that’s all they do, at least).

They are based on the same BIS batted ball data, though, which means if the data they’re putting in is biased (and there’s some indication that it is), they’re all pretty flawed.

In Baltimore this past August, Judy was special.

Judy didn’t run to 1B on a called 3rd strike that went thru the catcher and to the backstop.

Judy also was thrown out attempting to steal 2B because he quit running when he thought the hitter had fouled off the ball.

Judy was also picked off.

Wonderful series for this idiot.

They’re going to pad that outfield wall better,. They’d be silly not to and I’m pretty sure I heard some mention of that. Also I bet Josh keeps on wearing those pads he wore during the play offs which helped tremendously to protect his fragile ribs. There are things that can be done, as well as giving Josh more breaks at DH to rest his knees. There are ways around it. There aren’t ways around Judy sucking offensively.

“Those pads helped tremendously,” Hamilton said, placing his left hand over the ribs he cracked famously crashing into a wall more than a month ago. "I came all the way up on the base and I didn’t feel anything."

The worst they can do is say no or that they can’t help you, but maybe they can point you at somebody that can. If there is some kind of mutual agreement that needs to take place or something I need to do for somebody in return or whatever the case may be I have no problem doing whatever for whoever. That’s just the kind of person I am.

in the playoffs (if we get there).

That Tampa team was really good….you saw all their losses in the off-season yet Cairo has them winning 87 games next year…and we beat them because of Cliff Lee.

in a vacuum. The drag changes things. It will drop til it hits terminal velocity, when the acceleration due to gravity is offset by the drag. Considering it’s tumbling, and probably no longer traveling in a tight spiral, it’s doubtful it lands with muzzle velocity. It’s still probably traveling a few hundred mph, so it would suck if it hit you, and with an unlucky enough landing spot I can see it killing someone.

From wiki--
The non-fiction U.S. cable television program MythBusters on the Discovery Channel covered this topic in Episode 50: “Bullets Fired Up” (original airdate: April 19, 2006). Special-effects experts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman conducted a series of experiments to answer the question: “Can celebratory gunfire kill when the bullets fall back to earth?” Using pig carcasses, they worked out the terminal velocity of a falling bullet and had a mixed result, answering the question with all three of the show’s possible outcomes: Confirmed, Plausible and Busted.30 They tested falling bullets by firing them from both a handgun and a rifle, by firing them from an air gun designed to propel them at terminal velocity, and by dropping them in the desert from an instrumented balloon. The “busted” result applied only to bullets traveling on a perfectly vertical trajectory, which tumble on the way down, creating turbulence that reduces terminal velocity. The “plausible” result was cited because they found it was very difficult to fire a bullet in near-ideal vertical trajectory, so bullets were likely to remain spin-stabilized on a ballistic trajectory and fall at a potentially lethal terminal velocity. The “confirmed” result related to their research which verified cases of actual deaths from falling bullets.31

Yes, its possible. I’d be shocked if its what happened and frankly I think thats the logical opinion. Its not like I have any predisposition toward him. And obviously I dont want them to put the guy to death on the spot, of course they should do all the analysis and research into it they can and if it they decide thats what happened cool. Some Dominicans shoot guns in the air on New Year’s Eve especially in the hours leading to midnight, although authorities have repeatedly warned against the practice. Bystanders are killed or wounded every New Year’s Eve.

most of us wear helmets close to midnight and or park under overpasses if we have the option. New years day we get tons of calls in the morning about car/houses/everything with damage from falling projectiles. Most urban areas will be shooting off, dont matter where in the US your at.

Im refreshing my memory because I dont think that summary tells the whole story.

by DShep on Jan 4, 2011 12:33 AM CST up reply actions

alright, watched it.

It was not simply stated that it must be a perfect straight up vertical, merely at that a substantial enough angle that it will maintain spin.

Heres my problem: The case where they found someone who had been hit was a mile away. A handgun bullet will travel roughly 5,000 feet vertically if fired up. Do you guys have any idea how incredibly close to vertical you’d have to fire to get a bullet to come back down and hit someone in the vicinity? I cant imagine it would be able to maintain its full spin at that kind of angle. Not to mention wind effect..

The terminal velocity of a 9mm bullet was said to be 150 fps, they shot them at a pigs head and it bounced off. It seems like you’d have to have the full force of the gun to go through someones arm and kill another guy.

I would really like a fully detailed story on this thing, if every person at the party (and i mean every… including the injured guy.. isnt that known?) says its what happened I guess its possible, but if thats the case why is he being charged with murder off the bat…

Well if it did happen like that it was definitely incredibly long odds.

Alright, thus ends my interest in falling bullets for the night. Hopefully some really fleshed out reports come out about it, its interesting anyway.

Other factors that keep in mind

Guns/ammo used in those types of unregulated areas are not the greatest in quality and dont produce reliable results. The equivalent here would be guns sold at guns shows behind the scenes or in the parking lots. ive handle a few of them and they are as likely to kill you as they are to kill your target. another huge thing in unregulated areas is re-cased ammunition. Poorly re-cased or cheap ammo will produce weird results. I love MB and their ballistic tests but sometimes in real life situations the variables are wild as all get out

Wow, this is such a terrible idea

MY as a DH? The man has posted one 800+ OPS season in the past four years. Even as a 1st baseman, this is pretty low production. It would be much better for us to trade him for whatever we can get, even assuming that we eat about half his salary. That way, at least he wouldn’t clog positions that could be better filled with other players.

by JoeyJoeJoeJr.Shabadoo on Jan 4, 2011 8:10 AM CST reply actions

Or, you could think of it like this...

If Beltre is signed, is the value overall of Beltre manning third with Michael Young absorbing Vlad’s ABs better than just Vlad being re-signed and Michael Young still at third? Next year and probably the next few years, I think definitely so, yes. The problem will come when Michael Young’s contract comes off the books, the Rangers might be in a similar situation that they’re in now with Young with Beltre as he ages.

Basically, since Michael Young makes a lot of money, isn’t good anywhere in the field, and is likely nearly impossible to trade, if the contract for Beltre is even remotely tolerable, it’s probably the best thing the team could do with the options available right now.

That is, unless the status quo and saving your salvos for another day while maintaining that the team is probably the favorites in the West anyway without adding an expensive player in his 30s is your preferred way of handling this situation.
