Red Sox claim Max Ramirez on waivers

Per Jon Paul Morosi, Evan Grant, and others on Twitter, the Boston Red Sox have claimed Max Ramirez off of waivers from the Texas Rangers.

Given Boston's interest in Ramirez before the season, this isn't surprising, and I'm a little surprised the Rangers didn't try to (or weren't able to) work out a deal with Boston in exchange for Ramirez, so they could get something in return.

Boston supposedly was more interested in him as a DH/1B type than as a catcher, so it will be interesting to see how they use him this spring.  If he's a catcher, he will, of course, be competing with another former Ranger catching prospect, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who is now with the Red Sox.

My guess is that Boston tries to run him through waivers in late March, in the hopes of outrighting him and giving him another season at AAA to see if his bat rebounds.

Why throw that tag on a 20-year-old?

Strop is five years older, a reliever, and a converted shortstop. They both throw hard and are Dominican. That’s about where the similarities end.

so the red-sox are committed to salty as their catcher in 2011?

I never saw his yips look that terrible

so it’s hard to say. I doubt they feel too comfortable with it, since they’re bringing Varitek back. I’d bet that they split time about 50/50. Salty needs to prove he can produce with the bat.

Honestly, I think the Rangers got pretty good value for Salty given what he became. Mendez and McGuiness may not be top prospects, but they are legitimate prospects. No doubt that they held on to all three for too long, though.

I really like the idea of Olt, Deglan, Skole, and Profar moving through the system largely together

Although obviously Olt would move the fastest (barring a hyperspace jump from Profar in ’11, which is not impossible).

I liked UCLA back in the day when I lived out there

and they won 7 straight titles. No ties to my family at all…they were just the local team.

Liking UCLA means I hated USC and I still do.

That game was awful…left midway thru the 3rd quarter.

What you didn't want to see

Bobby Jo Cavazos or whatever the fuck his name was lead the comeback…

Truth of the matter we should have never been in that game. A&M loses 1 or ties 1 and is on probation and can’t go to a bowl game. The rest of the SWC is a giant cluster fuck with like a 5 way tie. They couldn’t break it and we were picked on the basis that we hadn’t been to that bowl in the longest amount of time….

I think we were 6-5 rolling in there.

If I had a gun to my head and had to pick one pitcher to pitch a game to save my life.... I'd pick 1999 Rick Helling.

You’re right, that year was the biggest disaster of a conference season I’ve ever seen.

It was basically “hey, A&M is the only decent team in the conference, but they cheated, so one of you other schmucks has to go to the bowl.”

JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Jan 5, 2011 4:41 PM CST up reply actions

His size means he should be a 3-4 DE.

I’m not entire sure how great Cushing will be as an OLB in it either…maybe if he gets to play the Will. I’m sure Demeco will be fine, but I don’t see the LB depth to make this work. It’s like they said “Hey, we’re not very good at getting D-Line talent, let’s switch to the 3-4” but forgot that they have 1.5 good linebackers. Also, Okoye doesn’t do anything at all for me as a NT…maybe in Wade’s system, but still.

It seems like their first pick is going to have to go to an OLB…perhaps Von Miller, but he’ll need some bulk for it. Which means no secondary pick with their first rounder.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Jan 5, 2011 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

I hardly follow the Texans at all...

But as I scroll down their roster, it sure seems like they’ve underperformed their talent level about as badly as any other team in the league. Am I just overrating guys like Cushing, Mario, Schaub, etc., or is the secondary just too big of an achilles heel?

by JDT217 on Jan 5, 2011 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

Secondary was bad,

then lost it’s best corner in Dunta Robinson last offseason. They were epically bad this year. Their only good player is Roy Williams-lite Bernard Pollard.

The problem with the front 7 is that they’ve underperformed. Mario flashes skills (think a less quick/explosive but better against the run Peppers), but isn’t consistently great the way Ware is. There’s really no one else on that line who scares you, so it’s hard for him to excel.

The LB core is good when Demeco is in there. I kind of like Adibi, though he’s a limited player. Cushing took a significant step back this year, probably related to not being able to “Overtrain” (take steroids).

It’s the sort of defense where you could see it coming together quickly in one offseason with a big talent infusion and a good DC. They’ve got the DC, but I’m not sure about the talent infusion. Right now it seems to me that those LBs are going to get picked on by OL who aren’t being hindered enough by their 3 linemen…when the secondary isn’t getting shredded.

PS- Devin McCourty waves hello.

To be fair...

McCourty was something… nobody saw. No Patriots fans liked the pick, as most of his pre-draft praise was on his special teams work, and very little of it was actually on his play as a CB. It was " a reach" for the first round, proof BB was losing his marbles, etc.1

by vfn on Jan 5, 2011 5:59 PM CST up reply actions

Cushing kind of sucked this year

probably it was being off the roids. Secondary was horrible. They let Robinson go, and just had no one who could cover.

I think the GM screwed the pooch when Robinson went, and they really didn’t replace him.

Romo is great trade bait for a team that seems to be rebuilding, but then again, the titans need to be rebuilding too. Not that Fisher will let Reinfeldt attempt to rebuild in the draft though.

So, the 8th overall pick, our 3rd rounder, Young (to swap contracts), and Verner/McCourty (#2 CB)?

Too steep for me. Then again, I’m not in the Titans org, just a fan. Both teams looking to rebuild though, I doubt a match is there.

I really, really just don’t see that happening. And this isn’t me saying this because Romo is my favorite player on the team, but the problem is that a) you’re not going to get the return that would make trading a franchise quarterback worth it and b) I don’t think the Cowboys are that in complete rebuild mode. More like….retooling.

Besides, Garrett and Romo work very, very well together.

That’s a tough one for me…because Ben does go all clutch once the playoffs start. But….until then he’s just average. Problem is, those few playoffs performances get used to make his average play during the season look better by the media and everyone.

Plus…he’s a complete douche. I know someone personally who can attest to just how much of an asshole and sexist jerk he is in real life.

I don't think you can understate

how Roethlisberger has played under a completely dismal offensive line. He may not ever do what Tom Brady did this season with Welker, Branch, Woodhead and two rookie TEs, but he really has put numbers up in Pittsburgh despite taking a ton of hits every game, though things seem to have improved this season for the Steelers.

Hmmm..

I don’t have much to back up my arguement, to be honest.

But I am just going by watching both of them play quite a bit. Romo is like a pitcher in San Diego. Facing NL teams and pitching in a cavern. Ben is a pitcher in the AL who plays in the California League stadium.

I don’t really agree with the stats because there are two different kinds of offenses in two different cities.

Romo is the better player. If by only slightly.

by TooLegitToQuit on Jan 5, 2011 11:32 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not talking about conferences

I’m talking about the styles of offenses they run, the defenses they have playing behind them, the coaching styles each they play under, the weather conditions they play in, as well as actual QB style.

The conference or division they play in really isn’t something to worry about. i was using baseballs NL/AL differences as a seperate analogy.

Michael Young will make $100 million as a decade-plus Rangers FOF...

I looked up Young’s career salaries. Maybe someone has said this, but, I haven’t seen it lately. MY will make about $100 million when this $48 million is done paying out. By comparison, Face jokes or not, that really isn’t much, all things considered.

Beltre will be paid almost $165mil by age 37.

"Every noble work is at first impossible."

by 3Bagger on Jan 5, 2011 8:42 PM CST reply actions

It's because Michael Young...

debuted at 23 years old as what was thought to be a light-hitting middle infield guy who happened to suddenly get 200 hits per year with some pop. And now as he begins to make the bulk of this money he does so as he doesn’t really deserve it based on his current production. Michael Young should be the happiest person in the world that he is getting $100 million out of the Texas Rangers.

Whereas Adrian Belte was a hotly sought after LA signing whom came up at age 19 and has been good/lucky enough to be good/young enough to be a rare guy who has signed two huge free agency contracts.

by ghostofErikThompson on Jan 5, 2011 9:30 PM CST up reply actions

I understand...

I’m thrilled about Beltre. However, the “MY is grossly over-paid” thesis is true. Not because MY is under-paid or the best player ever, but, in a proper context, he’s not over-paid for his entire career as Ranger.
