Detroit Tigers activate Delmon Young, de-activate Magglio Ordonez

The Detroit Tigers did not include Delmon Young on the active roster for the ALCS, due to an oblique strain he suffered in the ALDS.

Well, Young is back now.

Young has been added to the Tigers' 25 man ALCS roster, replacing Magglio Ordonezwho suffered a broken ankle on batting practice on Saturday.

Young isn't likely to be available until later in the series, but with the Tigers already lacking in outfield depth, they apparently decided that he was preferable to any other option they had available.

How the hell do you break an ankle in batting practice?

In case you weren't quite ready to get the fuck over it yet:
They should put a roof on Rangers Ballpark in Arlington

In short, no they shouldn’t. It’s just not feasible without hundreds of millions of dollars being spent on it. Basic architecture will tell you how bad of an idea it is. Check this out:

You need roofing; not the horrible stuff that fell down in Minnesota last year, but something durable. Plus, the light fixtures would need to come down and then new ones would be put in to go “under” the roof because lights on top of a roof would be awful. They would also have to be “indoor” lights because the ones up there now would be way too powerful and use too much energy for indoor use.

On top of that, a state-of-the-art climate control system would have to be installed ALL over the park. Speaking of climate control, the entire stadium is open. Doors and windows would have to go in all around the park, otherwise the climate control system is useless. Remember Mom asking about “air conditioning the neighborhood?” Multiply that by about 12,000 to get the picture. The point is: a roof is not happening at Rangers Ballpark. Besides, Team Co-Owner Nolan Ryan stated as much last year.

Young is playing today hitting 3rd.
Today’s lineup: Jackson 8, Santiago 4, Young 7, Cabrera 3, Martinez dh, Raburn 9, Peralta 6, Avila 2, Inge 5. Scherzer is starting. #Tigers

Delmon Young back in the lineup, hitting third, playing in left field. He’ll be playing through the pain.

by drizzle on Oct 10, 2011 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

This seems like it would only hurt them more.

By putting a guy who is in pain every time he swings and is a liability defensively even when healthy.

But good for us I suppose.

Agreed.

Don’t give him a meat ball, but if you pitch well to him, he should get himself out more than not.

With Scherzer, it may be tougher to get around on the ball, but line drives to LF would be effective, I have to think.

by Jobu. on Oct 10, 2011 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Pitch him inside?

Would that make it tougher for him to get around on the fastball?

What are we at the park for except to win? I'd trip my mother. I'd help her up, brush her off, tell her I'm sorry. But mother don't make it to third. ~Leo Durocher

Breaking Balls

Messing with his timing while his oblique is less than full strength will be the key … and it’ll also make it painful as all get out to swing. If your oblique is hurt, you can swing, but trying to adjust mid swing is nearly impossible

An injured oblique has to hurt and really drain your swing.

im not real sure a cortizone injection would help an oblique.

I would think that painkillers on a muscle injury would decrease your ability to use that muscle.

i love how their lineup is so unflexible

I’m sure they’d love to put Delmon Young at DH, but their hands are tied with Miggy, VMart, and Avila all having to play and being worthless on defense.

he's got some sort of wrist injury... don't know all the details.

any reason that he wasn’t active at the deadline that they couldn’t put him on the postseason roster?

i have had oblique injuries.. the only thing worse that i have experienced is a hip flexor injury....

pulled oblique while swinging a bat? unpossible…. hes gonna look like a fish out of water at the plate.

honestly, i doubt he makes his start.... if he does.. he wont make it 9 innings.it hurts your oblique to throw, run, hit.

that's what Leyland does

Young is his 3rd hitter, so he will hit 3rd, even if he’s hurt. Much like Vlad always hit 4th and Cruz 6th last year.
