I had an insane amount of work to do last night...
On top of recording our podcast. I had set the game to record but because it was so delayed and long, it went past the actual recording time I had set for the X-Factor.
So, when I turned on the TV to start the game — it was the bottom of the 11th. At first I was pissed I was “spoiled”.
Then I watched magic happen. And it was good.

You could probably spend less than $1000 and have a PC that will be able to run any game at the highest settings for the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately, spending money on a rig is the ladt thing I can do right now.

Wanna hear a freaking stupid story?
So, last night I needed to use my roomates laptop because I needed to troubleshoot my own computer. Long story short, lets just say I didn’t exactly have permission, and wasn’t going to get it if I asked, and he has the speakers cranked way up on the fucking thing so you can hear it pretty much throughout the entire apartment when it starts up. So to muffle the startup tone, I decided to put it in the fridge while it booted up. Seemed like a good idea at the time.
The fridge wasn’t running, and it couldn’t have been in there for longer than a minute, but before I opened it back up I hear this “POP”, and when I took it out there’s a fucking crack in the screen.
I’m pretty much fucking dead, obviously (although the research I was still able to do did kind of save Connie). But my question is: was that really likely the result of my genius plan to momentarily refrigerate the damn thing? I did a little googling on the subject, and I can’t find anything on refrigerators fucking up laptop screens, but I did run across a couple complaints of laptop screens randomly going “POP” on startup. So is there a chance that was simply cruel coincidence?

How many possible relevant results could there be?
I don’t think most people go around sticking their electronic equipment in the fridge. You can put a dying hard drive in the freezer for a while to help the disks spool up again, but that’s just a component.

Apparently some people do it to cool them off when they're dying or running hot
But the main concern there is condensation.
It was the temp change then.
It was cause you put it in the fridge. If it is under warranty you may be able to get away with it though.

We actually have a fairly strict policy to not fuck with each others stuff
Which normally I completely adhere to, because I kind of came up with most of it, but last night was kind of an emergency.
Anytime you take glass and bring it from a warm/hot temperature
into a cold temp, it cracks and/or breaks.
Much like when you drop ice cubes into a drink, you hear the crackle and pop.
If you hear a “pop” sound, it’s definitely the temp change.

The glass layer on an LCD is very thin.
Possibly some pressure also resulted from the temperature change of the liquid substrate part?

Not for the temperature change of air.
Water could do a quick enough thermal change to cause a problem, but not air.
Throw water on a frozen windshield, and it’ll crack… drive from a warm garage into cold air and it won’t.
If laptops broke when the air temperature changed:
Walking out of the Denver airport in January would be certain doom for your laptop.

I'm not sure why it matters.
He was messing with the laptop when he didn’t have permission to do so and knew that he shouldn’t have been. It was broken by negligence, recklessness, or pure accident. He may not be at fault, but he is responsible, in my opinion.

I’m certainly not dismissing him in any way but BOS has/had deep pockets and their WS teams were quite perfectly aligned. I know a lot of the credit goes to him. I’m just trying to rationalize his ability with the whole Red Sawx, money, hype, ESPN veil put on him and the Sox.
What has Boston’s farm system been like since he was there? I just don’t know b/c I’ve rolled my eyes at any and all BOS media treatment for a long time!

Its really hard to compare Theo and JD given their respective financial situations
Theo has never had to build a team from the ground up with such a tight budget and relying on scouts as much as JD has. And likely wont have to for the forseeable future going to another big payroll club in the Cubs.
Had Theo of stayed in Boston it would have been interesting to see how he maneuvered around the now albatrosses of Crawford and Lackey who are on the payroll for the next few years while having to keep a top notch club on the field
well i didnt really want to compare Theo to JD
just, is Theo the best…or among the best? Like we heard for a while. They’re two quite different situations, which is why i was wondering about what impact he made on their farm system.
Because developing the farm coupled with some money to toss around will be the key in Chicago. Whereas BOS was more money with just a couple farm players.
Theo is definitely one of the better GMs in the league
I do think hes gotten a bit too much hype and the last few years has made some really egregious signings, along with some really good ones mind you.
Going to CHI he is going to be expected to bring a title in the next few years. Building a farm system will not be priority #1 from ownership or fans. Hes got a couple contracts hes going to have to work around but I bet his first move this winter will be to get either Albert or Prince to sign there and then go from there.

It doesn’t appear that they will have any type A FAs of their own which means if they go sign 2 top tier guys it will deal a major blow to next years draft class. But like I said I dont think the farm system is at the top of ownerships or fans priority list after signing Theo
Ricketts has made it known he wants a development pipeline
And Theo/Sox did develop a strong talent pipeline. They’ve just traded a lot of it over the past few years to immediately help the ML roster.

But thats not going to be as easy to do if you give away all your top draft picks (their 1st round is protected since they are in the top half) by signing veteran FAs. And fans damn sure aren’t going to want to hear about passing on signing a Alber Pujols so that you can draft prospects who may or may not ever sniff the majors.
One of the ways Boston was able to build their pipeline was by having so many FAs that garnered draft pick compensation. I dont see Chicago being able to duplicate that in the near future.
They probably can't match it, but the Cubs also haven't swung a big stick at the draft/internationally in a while
I imagine they’ll blow loads of cash in both arenas next year. I agree with you on Pujols/Fielder. They’ll try to make a big splash there and lose the pick. However, if they take the JD approach and make it rain in Latin America to counteract the lack of a premium pick they can attack both goals simultaneously.

Do the Cubs have the relationships already in LA to be able to do so next year?
Or will they have to invest a lot of time and money to make those relationships which may start seeing results (signings) in 2-3 years?
From what I remember from Up and In
they’re always fairly active, but they’re far more along the lines of the Rangers older cash strapped strategy when they’d spread the money among many players and hope one hits, so never the bigger bonuses.

I wouldn’t want to be the next GM in Boston. Things are going to get a bit ugly there, particularly if Crawford’s utter uselessness stays the case. It looks like one of those jobs where there is no best case scenario. You pull the team out of its little free fall; credit still goes to the kid who got them their rings. You suffer for a few years for because of his poor contracts, and the blame goes on you.
Theo is very smart, which is why he’s bolting town. I’m not saying Boston is going to be bad, but Boston isn’t going to be easy.

Im not going to get into a drawn out argument with you about this
But AA has done some really nice things in TOR so far and just like JD can not be judged by the same token as guys like Dombrowski, Cashman, Theo, etc. He inherited a roster that had at least one if not two of the worst contracts in baseball on it (Wells and Rios). Those two contracts bogged down much of his maneuverability in signing FAs or making trades.
He has managed to rid the club of those two players and their contracts along with making several other really good moves which have stockpiled their farm system into one of the best in baseball. This winter will go a long way toward judging just how good he really is because this winter is his first with considerable money to spend and premium FAs available.
AA is definitely in the top 1/3 of GMS in baseball IMO
And to add to that real quick
Frankie didn’t have a bad year in TOR. He didn’t have the breakout year Napoli had here but TOR also didn’t need a C (Napoli’s primary position) and did need a late inning guy who ended up saving 17 games for them in 2011.
So that deal wasn’t as bad as you are making it out to be
Napoli could have caught 35-40 games, played 35-40 games at 1B and also been a DH (he's a huge upgrade over Encarnacion).
It was a really, really bad trade for AA.

But a guy like that wasn’t a big a need to the BJs as a late inning reliever like Frankie.
Not every trade is a win and AA definitely lost on the Napoli deal. But the extent of his loss and the magnitude of his idiocy because of that trade is being blown way out of proportion by you.
He got killed on that trade. 50 IPs of relief pitching v Napoli's season?
Now, he’s definitely improved the BJs bottom line by moving Rios & Wells but he has yet to make them markedly better.

You generally aren't going to unload those types of players
with the intention of instantly seeing an instant increase in wins. He’s put his team in a much better position for the next few seasons regardless of the Napoli blunder.
They're in the same position they've been in for most
of the last 15 years and they were out of playoff contention before July 4…again.
This was a year where the Wild Card could be had or you would at have had your team in contention with 90 wins.

Their farm system is one of the best in baseball and they no longer have the Wells and Rios contracts on their books holding them down.
They are in much better shape as a organization regardless of what their W/L record is on the field.
Much like the Rangers were in a much better place in 2008 after the Tex trade as a organization even if it didn’t immediately translate into the W/L column

billy bob’s is tourist as all hell but still a great time. Worth a look if only to see who is playing while you visit. If you hang downtown you can chill out at the end of the day in Flying Saucer or 8.0s, but Billy Bob’s is worth a trip to the stockyards if you have the time. More likely save it for another trip though

Also — unrelated — I’m intrigued by everyone (not you guys) complaining about Stars ticket prices. The Stars have the cheapest tickets in the NHL and have one of the best “fan index” in the league.

The difference between crowd attire at Rangers and Stars (or most other hockey arenas) is huge.
Hardly anyone wears full-on baseball jerseys to games, but almost everyone wears a hockey sweater.

I have plenty of Rangers T’s but no jerseys. But how much of that is the climate controlled environment. A tshirt is necessary in the ballpark cause of the heat, the sweater necessary at AAC cause they keep it chili.
