I think the conspiracy is ridiculous

He blew the call, but that is a problem for all MLB umpires. They are too proud and often refuse to ask for second opinions when they should. There should be an umpire in the booth who watches the game in real time and can go through replay. If the call is something that is obvious within the first viewing of the replay then correct the call.

I can see why they don't want to use it during the regular season...

where over the course of the season it would probably extensively add to game time. But why can’t it be instituted during the playoffs where they can afford to have an additional umpire with replay equipment communicating to the head umpire throughout the game? It seems so illogical not to considering how badly a mistake is magnified and how significantly it can alter the playoffs considering how a few games there really are in contrast to the regular season.

by casew on Oct 23, 2011 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Why use it in one place but not others?

If you care about getting calls right, you should care every single game. One game in May can be the difference between a team making the playoffs and not. If it is important to you that calls are correct, that mission never takes a game off.

"Drop it"

Why would this be a story? It’s not like there have been two potentially game-changing wrong calls made in the World Series or anything.

It’s not like the entire world finds out without a doubt that the call had been blown within 20 seconds of said call, but we continue to play the baseball game as if nothing happened…

But I wouldn’t mind if we get another couple of blatantly blown calls.

I’d like to see the Rangers score 2 runs in the 9th to walk off with a win following a catch that was called a trap, and then a tag out at home where our runner should have been safe.

I don’t even buy it. It’s an easy excuse to throw in our faces for when we complain about long Red Sox/Yankees games take. The real true is MLB just refuses to adapt because they think baseball is supposed to be all flowery and human and umps making a mistake here and there was a part of the game from their childhood. I don't see why it would have to stop. A radio receiver/transmitter could be placed in an ump's ear.

When a play is too close to call, just ask the booth. They relay what they see and 10 seconds later the game goes on. It’s a lot faster than 4 umps huddling on the field.

Do one single test run with it unbeknownst to anyone...

Have an umpire in booth.

>Naps applies the tag. Umpire calls him safe. Wash runs onto the field.

< Umpire sees the replay once, immediately after the play. Relays down to the crew chief that the call was blown

> 1st base umpire sends Wash back to the dugout before he even starts his argument, because they fixed the call.

Of course that's how it would work.

And eventually, it would become more like:

> Crew chief calls batter out less than a minute after the call was originally made. Wash never leaves the dugout, the confrontation at first is avoided, and NOBODY GIVES A DAMN ABOUT THE ORIGINAL CALL.

Stuff like the Beltre foul ball isn't a judgment call

The HP umpire didn’t see it. Umpires will ask for help there to see if someone else saw it, and if someone did, would use that information to correct the call.

In this case, Kulpa saw the whole play, and simply blew the call. He obviously doesn’t think he blew the call, but he did. Even if another umpire thinks the call is wrong, they are not going to run over there and say “Hey Ron, I think you blew that one. He was safe,” because then we have two umpires arguing over a call, which makes them all look bad. So the umpires have to let their partners live & die by their calls, unless they can prov

by drizzle on Oct 23, 2011 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Whether someone was tagged isn't a judgment call. The fact that the guy blew it doesn't make it that way.

Your definition of a judgment call is amorphous. Every call an umpire makes is made in his judgment, whether you’re talking about a foul off Beltre’s foot or a tag made/not made at first base.

And saying you have two umpires arguing doesn’t make sense, either. The home plate umpire’s call prevails, period. Wash should have asked for Kulpa to get help, even if the help just rubber stamps the call.

9.02

Any umpire’s decision which involves judgment, such as, but not limited to, whether a batted ball is fair or foul, whether a pitch is a strike or a ball, or whether a runner is safe or out, is final. No player, manager, coach or substitute shall object to any such judgment decisions.

Rule 9.02(a) Comment: Players leaving their position in the field or on base, or managers or coaches leaving the bench or coaches box, to argue on BALLS AND STRIKES will not be permitted. They should be warned if they start for the plate to protest the call. If they continue, they will be ejected from the game.
If there is reasonable doubt that any umpire’s decision may be in conflict with the rules, the manager may appeal the decision and ask that a correct ruling be made. Such appeal shall be made only to the umpire who made the protested decision.
If a decision is appealed, the umpire making the decision may ask another umpire for information before making a final decision. No umpire shall criticize, seek to reverse or interfere with another umpire’s decision unless asked to do so by the umpire making it.

I have a hard time believing the 1b ump had much conviction in that opinion

since you know, its absurd. He probably knows he didn’t see it well. Not sure if he would have done the right thing and asked for help, but its possible.

The home plate ump could have seen that

by Texas Jihad on Oct 23, 2011 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

And yet they don't mind adding 30 seconds to the commercial breaks for the playoffs.

Even the homerun replay they haven now is about the same speed as a manager argument.

But thats still the regular umps going down to view video slowing everything down. If they just got a well trained dedicated umpire/technician with a radio link to the crew chief.. it could be done in 30-60 seconds every time.

And even though that would speed up rather than slow down the game, the MLB could take the chance to speed up other parts of the game too. Enforce the time between pitches rule if the game is moving too slowly, have the umpires go out quicker to break up long mound meetings, try to encourage the managers not to take leisurely strolls to the mound for changes, etc. whatever you can think of.

Buddy boy on instant replay
MLB is planning to add “small things” to video review, perhaps limited to fair/foul calls down the lines.

Link

This seems like a thinly veiled attempt to:
a) add nothing to the scope of instant replay as the only fair/foul calls that could be overturned would be home runs. Imagine the insanity of reviewing a play called dead and then overturning it as live. Which leads me to…
b) discredit instant replay by broadening its scope to include the one call that doesn’t work well with review (if it’s foul, it’s dead. If it’s fair, it’s live. How can we possibly change a ruling after runners have stopped running and returned to their places?)

by erudy on Oct 23, 2011 5:28 PM CDT reply actions

Fair/foul

Give them one base each. I think most teams would be prefer a single to taking a strike and having to re-try.
