But how that works, I think it is underrating these specific pitcher vs. lineup matchups. I’d agree more with 55, or perhaps even a little higher.

Looking at the Rays lineup tonight is making me really happy.
At least compared to the last two nights.
Only three spots in their order improve when a righty is on the mound.
Jaso and Brignac hit RHP better than Shoppach and Rodriguez against righties, but not better than the latter two hit lefties.
Zobrist can switch hit, but he likes the right side of the plate more.
The two spots that really benefit tonight, Maddon is putting back-to-back, which is a delicious spot for Gonzalez or Oliver late in the game.

Of course the rangers could lose even if colby pitches well, but we maximize our chances if he keeps the ball in the yard.

longoria vs anyone is gonna be a worse matchup than, lets say, quintanilla vs anyone, but i dont see anything on fangraphs that would make him more dangerous than normal. if anything, even though colby has blown for sections of this season, he has still been pretty effective against right handed bats

I looked up Longoria's career platoon split before doing the preview to account for four lefty starters.
I was happy that it wasn’t that extreme for the series, but it makes me unhappy for tonight.
He’s weaker, but still awesome. He’s no Sean Rodriguez.

I'm annoyed that every article I read is simply conceding that Jeremy Hellickson is and has been a better pitcher than Matt Harrison so that matchup favors the Rays...
I think Jeremy Hellickson is pretty awesome, too, you guys. But, in 2011, Matt Harrison has simply been better. Folks need to stop just citing ERA. I thought we were past that. Harrison has been better at everything a pitcher can be other than ERA, GB%, and luck stats.

Now his FIP says that in the future the bottom is going to fall out and he’ll regress. Who knows if it will be his next game, next season, or he’ll make improvements to lower his FIP
He has a lower K rate, and higher walk rate, a higher HR/9 rate, he actually does have a worse GB%...
We really are just going by ERA here?

I'm having a hard time arguing this point because I'm not positive what I think or how I want to say it.
I do think he had a better season. That includes all of the factors outside of his control(defense, park). I think FIP talks about what we can expect out of them going forward. That says that Harrison is a better pitcher overall as well.
I have a hard time just discounting his season because of who played behind him or where he pitched. I don’t think we actually disagree on who the better pitcher is or who will be better going forward.
FIP talks about what we can expect going forward AND attempts to talk about what was actually within a pitcher's control.
Because those things tend to go hand-in-hand.
FIP is also not the best way to talk about what we should expect going forward, because it ignores things like talent changes.
I think you’re rejecting FIP because you’re looking at it the wrong way.
How about looking at tRA, which doesn’t ignore balls in play. Instead, it sorts them by how they were hit.

it’s not a stat that gets quoted on the major websites a lot, right? I think people have tabled it because they realize the classifications are bad.
And the little I’ve tracked what gets classified as a line drive and a fly ball doesn’t really give me a lot of hope. Maybe great classifications aren’t necessary for the stat to be predictive.
I think it has a very specific purpose.
And I don’t think that purpose is often a part of an article meant for large consumption.
It’s specific purpose for me is a conversation like this.
Also, I believe it was shown to be only slightly less predictive than xFIP. I don’t know about tRAr.

Yep. Here is what Fangraphs thinks:
Jeremy Hellickson – In his first full season in the majors, Jeremy had a great year. He has a an unbelievable BABIP (0.223). This value allowed his ERA (2.95) to be about 1.5 less than his FIP (4.44) and xFIP (4.72). He has no history of out performing his BABIP like Cain or Weaver. He may be a decent pitcher, but it is time to SELL HIGH.
But how is he having a better season this season other than ERA?
He’s not striking out more hitters than Matt Harrison, he’s walking way more than Matt Harrison, he gives up more line drives, more fly balls and therefore less ground balls, more of his fly balls leave the park, etc.
I don’t think anyone is saying Jeremy Hellickson is having a poor season or anything, and hell, he easily could win Game 4 and Matt Harrison go into the shitter, but in 2011, I can’t see any reason to think Hellickson has been better than Harrison.

Also, while his FB% is up, his IFFB% is really really high. Might be flukey (probably flukey) but if we’re not really talking about going forward, shouldn’t he get credit for that?
But get credit for what? His ERA?
That’s what I’m trying to figure out. If we are just going by ERA then he’s had a better season than CC, Dan Haren, Felix Hernandez, etc.

Well
This is really just an argument without consequence since we aren’t making any decisions going forward about it – just maybe having an argument about credit, which might get used in post-season awards.
But ideally, I would give a pitcher credit for executing his game plan, whatever it was. If he could induce a groundball without fail (not saying anybody can) and he knew he had the best infield defense behind him, I’d still give him credit even though he’s only doing half of the work. This is clearly personal preference. You can think of this as how much credit you would give a QB if he’s throwing to really good WR’s.
What I wouldn’t give a pitcher credit for is if he didn’t execute his game plan and still got outs because his defense over-performed during his starts. Like even though his OF defense sucks and he gives up a ton of FB’s, it somehow doesnt’ bite him in the ass.
Bottom line: I am willing to give a ton of credit to the pitcher.

I’m cool with that.
But, given the body of work in 2011, I don’t see Jeremy Hellickson as having had a better season than Matt Harrison nor a better bet to win tomorrow simply because of his ERA. (Even if that’s not what you’re saying. That’s just what my original point was.)

My opinion between those two pitchers is still an “I don’t know.” I realize that I’m probably giving way too much credence to the unknown as opposed to known but I just get dazzled by ERA-FIP splits that high. I have a hard time attributing it to luck.

It's fine if you have questions about FIP or xFIP or whatever,
but you can’t then turn around and accept ERA on it’s face. There are many, many more problems with ERA than with FIP. Ideally, some combination is used, along with other stats, and that entire picture should be one that shows Harrison to be a better pitcher this year.

and I’ve learned a lot in this discussion. I have a hard time trying to accept an argument that says “Well if everything went the way it was supposed to, then this is the kind of pitcher he is” when you have what actually happened available to you. How do you account for a pitchers mental makeup, how he responds when things go wrong? Does he crumble, or does he drive on?
Again, keep in mind I’m still learning about the different stats. I’m asking because i really don’t know. I accept that Harrison is the better pitcher.

If it’s because you’re actually doing something that makes your ERA that low, sure. If it’s because of luck and ballpark and defense, no. Pitchers can’t control luck and ballpark and defense.

FIP just tries to remove what the pitcher is actually responsible for.
A better ERA means that Hellickson was in a environment that suppressed runs better beyond his control (defense and park) and was luckier.

Other methods of trying to remove what is out of a pitcher's control:
tRA: 4.55 Hellickson, 3.57 Harrison
Wow, that’s not even close. 4.4 to 2.3 WAR.
Hell, even bWAR — whose only attempt to remove things out of a pitcher’s control are giving an average defensive adjustment and park factors — has Hellickson just barely ahead.

I wouldn't necessarily call the Rangers' success against Price a fluke...
More likely just a great fastball pitcher meeting a great fastball hitting offense. It also doesn’t mean that Price can’t completely shut down the Rangers. Sure the data is somewhat SSS, but that doesn’t mean the data we have so far is completely irrelivant.

and I’m able to do some reading at home, but especially after getting out of the first very stressful window, these past ~10 days have been some of my favorite ever. The nights suck, but getting to spend this much time with just my wife and son is something that I’ll always look back fondly upon [and probably never get again].

I just spent 20 minutes
studying the box scores on Reference from the May 30-June 1 series. I would love the result of that Colby/Price start, but I don’t think my stomach could stand the drama. What a game. That was one of maybe 4 I missed all year. Had a work function. Other interesting thing is that in the Holland start in that series, a one out double by Hamilton in the first inning took our Win Expectancy up to 68%. That seems odd in a scoreless game.
