This Day in LSB History

One year ago today, Adrian Beltre declined the player option on his contract with the Boston Red Sox, becoming a free agent.

I looked at the pluses and minuses with Beltre, and wrote that I thought the Rangers would have some interest in them, but concluded:

It may be that someone is willing to give Beltre ridiculous money, something like 6 years at $90 million, and the Rangers won't have to worry about making a decision on him.

So, yeah...the Rangers gave him a 6 year, $96 million deal (although the sixth year is voidable if Beltre doesn't hit certain plate appearance totals).  Whiff there for me.

But there's a lot of interesting discussion at the time (400+ comments) about whether Beltre would be an appropriate target for the Rangers...

Best comment from Beltre thread one year ago

By 2013, after all the Beltre-replaces-MY-@-3rd drama has faded away …
MY’s rep would soar with the nat’l media about how unselfish he was moving first from SS to 3rd, then 3rd to DH all for the good of the team.

There's some good predictions in that thread.

He will demand a trade.

And nobody will do it so he’ll fall in line like he did last time.

more fun

This is what makes me think the Rangers might overpay a little to get Beltre…..

just to cock block the Angels a little bit and not let them become the favorite in the West again.

Adrian Beltre is awesome.

Not mediocre. Right about average

I remember LL talking about how much Ranger fans will enjoy Beltre playing on their team.

Now I really understand where they’re coming from.

One of my favorite questions...
Per catcher…

Would anybody do Nelson Cruz for Daric Barton & Kurt Suzuki?

I bet he still makes that trade.

"In fact, most of these free-swinging Padres couldn’t hit Dock’s funky palm ball. I threw it often. But by then, also, the first acid distractions entered: the TV flickered; the cracks in the wall started to move; the hand soap started to breathe — those sorts of things. Plus I was drawn to the outdoor garden between innings. Rain was near, I sensed." - A.J. Daulerio

Swing and a big miss although those of you led around the nose by the deeply flawed WAR

would see Suzuki put up a 2.2 while Cruz had a 1.6.

I'm not saying it was a bad idea.

Just interesting. At the time reasonable… Barton fell off a cliff though.

Didn't see Barton falling off a cliff and that was before Veet was signed (I believe)

and Frankie was traded for Napoli.

If you can only extend one of Josh or Cruz...who do you extend and for how much / how long?

And don’t give me one of those bullshit AJM tries to sign Napoli for 3/25 offers…you have to make an offer that one of them will sign.

Probably neither.

I think Josh will cost well north of $100m and I don’t want to pay that to a guy his age with his injury history and only one great year under his belt.

If I could get Josh for Beltre money… I’d be more interested.

Cruz should be cheaper… but power is always expensive. And his leg muscles are made from silly string apparently.

I’d probably let Cruz walk no matter. He’s got all the same worries that Hamilton does without being as talented.

Josh has had a very good year, a great year, a good year and two injury-plagued years.

One of those years in Cincy, he was a rookie and they were still trying to figure out what to do with him.

I agree with that.

But as an example… Fielder has had three great years in his career… and he’s younger.

I don’t think you can expect great from Josh… you can expect good and hope you don’t get a shitty one.

Cruz

2 arb years left and I only want 1 FA year with options for 1-2 more

3 year/ 30 million dollar deal base
2012: 7 mil
2013: 9.5 mil
2014: 13.5 mil

club options for 2015 and 2016 at 15 mil each (1 mil buyout each year) and each can vest at certain plate appearance levels

by bigsteve on Nov 3, 2011 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

I love Cruz but I’m not sure I’m really going to want him after 2014 (age 35). For $15 per year, I imagine we could sign a pretty salty COF in his 20’s.

He knows hes not a good 3B, and he will take his $16 mil to the bank all day.

Well, there's a halfway decent argument that he got unlucky in a non-contract year again:

2011 BABIP: .273
Career BABIP: .292
2011 LD%: 18.1%

But, then again, considering he was just a hamstring injury away from putting up consecutive 7.0 WAR seasons….

Ninja proved me wrong by landing Napoli
I think it’s obvious that he’s the best non-pitcher we could get to improve our team
But I don’t think there’s much of a chance that it happens.
