Wednesday a.m. Rangers stuff
Things are still quiet out there...
Drew Davison talks to Bob Simpson, one of the moneymen behind the Rangers, about Rangers-related stuff...Simpson says that payroll, incidentally, "will be" in the nine figures in 2012.
Richard Durrett asks whether the Rangers will have a "World Series hangover" in 2012, after coming so close in 2011 then falling short.
Beau Jones, one of the players acquired in the Mark Teixeira trade, has left the organization as a minor league free agent and signed with the Florida Marlins.

World Series hangover?
Should you really be asking this question for a team that went to back to back WS?
Would have been nice for Beau Jones to make...
…at least a token appearance in the majors for Texas…if for no other reason than for the Teix trade to have given the Rangers five big league players.

Was Beau Jones the only piece of that trade that didn't contribute to the major league team?

Just should have keep Tex for another year and see what we would have got for him then rather than panicking like we did.

Andrus is young and on his way up, Rollins is on the decline
last 3 years (fangraphs)
Player / Age / wOBA / WAR
Andrus / 20 / .322 / 3.4
Andrus / 21 / .298 / 2.1
Andrus / 22 / .323 / 4.5
Rollins / 31 / .316 / 3.0
Rollins / 32 / .317 / 2.5
Rollins / 33 / .329 / 3.8
All of Rollins’ last three years are below his career average. His best years are definitely behind him.
I think the only way we get rid of Elvis right now is if Profar is ready, which is still AT LEAST two years away. Hopefully when Elvis hits FA, Profar is ready to take his place (provided he wasn’t traded for an ace).

Do you think Andrus alone would net Greinke?
And for the record I think the Rangers are better served using their resources elsewhere. I was just curious what people thought considering the multiple levels involved in the scenario. Signing a high-priced guy, acquiring a TORP, trading an LSB favorite, trading a couple young guys under long-term control.
I think given their current contract situations and age.
Andrus is more valuable.
I think the Brewers would jump on that deal.

The nine-figures comment is interesting:
Is it safe to say that there will be a nine-figure payroll next season?
It will be. Success follows success. By 2015 the goal is that this team will be self-sustaining, but our payroll may be another 40 or 50 percent higher. So that will move you up to a level where you should field a great team year after year. We just need to bridge the gap [between now and the TV contract] to get this great franchise to permanent success.
I don’t know if Simpson means “40 or 50 percent higher” than this year’s anticipated nine-figure payroll, or 2011’s payroll.
If the former, it’s hard to say how high we’re talking, because we don’t know if “nine figures” means $105 million or $130 million. And there’s a pretty large difference between 2015 ranges of $147-158 million and $182-195 million.
If it’s the latter, though, then we’re talking $129-138 million in 2015, which, I think, sums up the Rangers chances of signing multiple high-priced free agents this offseason.
Dark Luck Dragon of the Sith
I think he means around $130m.

For 2015? Or 2012?
There’s also this:
We’re expecting from 2011-2014 we will probably spend $40 million on capital improvements and $60 million or so on payroll and other needs.
Assuming all $60 million goes to payroll, that’s $15 million a year (including last season), though I don’t imagine it gets spent in even amounts per season, since the team’s payroll’s getting more expensive. I’m assuming whatever is added from will be above a break-even point for revenue, and ’m really wondering what Simpson views as that break-even point.
Also, I wish we knew more about the TV bonus money…

What was our payroll last year?

by Gay For Feliz on Nov 9, 2011 11:29 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
Or one very big FA and a few smaller ones, yes.
But I have a very hard time believing they’ll run with a $130 million payroll in 2012.
Dark Luck Dragon of the Sith
I don't if they feel an opportunity is there that is worth it.
I don’t think they want to spend that money regardless… but I think they’ll do it if it makes sense.
Additionally… I think they sign one big FA (and possibly extend a guy or two) and have a bit of room for growth for a mid-season trade.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Not necessarily.
We have a lot of arb raises and contract increases.
We probably could sign two big FA… but they’d have to be structured in 2012 to have lower value. Like the $10m Cliff Lee got in 2011 from the Phillies.
It would also mean Hamilton is definitely gone if we commit to long term contracts at that level.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I think the estimate of $95-100 million
after arbitration and raises for indentured servants seems about right.
That would leave $40-45 million for signings, if they run with a $130 million payroll. That’d almost certainly be enough to, say, sign Wilson and Darvish (if he posts). I’m not suggesting they should, but it should be enough.
Dark Luck Dragon of the Sith
I have this weird feeling
either Oswalt or Buehrle ends up here.

I think Darvish is what the Rangers want most.
And if we don’t get him… I think we’ll end up either getting CJ on a very team friendly deal (if CJ decides he just has to stay here… low probability) or Buehrle/Oswalt.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
It will all depend
on the chain of events. The problem with Darvish is the wait. If one of those guys decides to say screw it and signs, you’ll get a rush of moves similar to a position rush in the NFL Draft.
"Calmer than you are dude"
by Arlington Stadium Legend on Nov 9, 2011 11:44 AM CST up reply actions
I don't think so.
I think all the major moves will wait till Darvish posts or the Winter Meetings.
Darvish can post in November and be done (from a who has rights perspective) before the Winter Meetings.
If Darvish delays posting before the Winter Meetings I think things will shift gears.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I could see a vet like Buehrle say
this is where I want to play and sign. For instance, if he says, okay, I’m going to Miami with Ozzie, that’s one piece off the board. Oswalt could possibly do the same thing. If it does happen, it throws everything into chaos because no one wants to be the team left with no one to dance with.

"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I think it's obvious
that the Rangers are targeting SP. I don’t know if JD is willing to risk coming up empty in that regard playing 1-10 odds that you get to negotiate with Darvish. Difference of opinion I suppose.
"Calmer than you are dude"
by Arlington Stadium Legend on Nov 9, 2011 11:57 AM CST up reply actions
It's a timing thing.
I think JD will wait the two weeks until Darvish is likely to post, and the four days the posting will take to find out.
Winter meetings are almost four weeks away. If Darvish isn’t settled by then… I agree he’ll pursue other options faster.
But saying that it all has to be sorted before the Winter Meetings starts is unlikely.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I agree with that.
My point was more I’ll be interested to see what happens if a few of the guys sign before the meetings. I think there is a good chance a SP rush occurs if that happens.
