I think all of the posturing by Orlando and the "serious" discussions they had with the Nets

I feel like Crawford is a better fit on a fast paced team, a run and gun type squad.
Also, now that he’s north of 30, I don’t think he’s going to be all that great anymore. Volume shooters who don’t help much on D tend to become less than useful quickly.

not surreal enough, too coherent
Not having
seen delonte west play in like 2 years and not remembering much about him before that, how good is he at running an offense, moving without ball? How is his handle, his first step, breaking down his man and getting to the cup, keeping his dribble? Someone catch me up to speed on his game and what he brings and doesn’t bring to the table (for this team).
Is he a capable defender against
big guards? Stevenson has about 25 pounds on him in the regard…
probably better vs the smaller guards
at least better than anyone was on our team last year
by studcrackers on Dec 15, 2011 6:25 PM CST up reply actions
He has a very good reputation as a defender.
I don’t see him guarding a ton of big guards very well. But he does have long arms and will definitely compete and not back down.
He’s more of a combo guard than a true point, so his offense running will look a lot different than Kidd’s, just like JJ last year was a big change of pace.
Honestly I’d say the best description of him is that he’s solid in pretty much everything, great at nothing.

Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson points out that Jason Kidd and Shawn Marion were never known as defensive stoppers until the Mavs’ title run.
.
.
.
That, Nelson said, is a credit to Carlisle. That’s why Nelson thinks the Mavs will still be a stingy defensive team with Brendan Haywood as the Mavs’ only true big man.
Weird logic, there. And maybe Marion was underrated on D because he played on so many high scoring teams in Phoenix, but Jason Kidd was 1st team All Defense four times.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Dallas matches up with big teams like the Lakers, Grizzlies, etc. but there are fewer big post scorers these days.
I thought of both of them as strong defensive players before their time here.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver

But going into last season, they seemed to have lost some of the speed necessary to be a good defender.

Meh.
I disagree on both counts. Marion has always been a great defender. People didn’t think of him that way because of who he played for.
And Kidd…Kidd is widely considered one of the most dominant defensive guards in the history of the league. Just a really confusing statement from Donnie.
Maybe he meant that Kidd’s defensive reputation had slipped. It definitely had. But during his prime? Please.
I think it was more the quickness aspect

thought Carter looked fine
he attacked a lot, got to the basket. I was worried after his stint in Phoenix that he had become just a jumpshooter, but tonight anyway he didn’t settle.
His outstanding turnover and assist rates are often overlooked aspects of his skillset. If he’s driving to the basket, that can be a dimension Dallas hasn’t had in a long time.
by Alan Smithee on Dec 18, 2011 11:31 PM CST up reply actions
He went to the basket consistently
and shot 4-11 with two FT attempts. That is indicative of how much explosiveness he had. His -21 in 19 minutes was also pretty remarkable. I agree with you about his intent, though.
by Brett Perryman on Dec 18, 2011 11:52 PM CST up reply actions
the shooting percentage doesn't really matter to me right now
I’ve watched several preseason games so far(basketball deprivation syndrome), and a lot of teams are clearly very rusty on jumpshots.
All four of Carter’s jumpers from 15 feet and out were missed, including some open shots he just flat out bricked. I expect that will change when he’s in midseason form. Everything else he took was right at the right at the rim, and even if he’s lost a little bit of his finishing ability, I’m happy with that shot distribution.
It looked like Carter was motivated. Say what you will about the man, but the version that actually gives a crap is pretty good. Given that the three other guys in the starting lineup are going to be Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion and Brendan Haywood, a guy who can actually attack the defense would be huge.

Carter looks huge. Roddy was efficiently good, and DoJo looks like he should start over Carter.

the most about carter is that he shot the ball every time he touched it. Hopefully we get to see a little more of his reputed court vision and passing skill once the offense gets settled in the coming weeks.

If I’d have played him I’d only be down by 4 points with Akers and Pitt Def left…

This is why I like only having 2 RBs on my roster. No decision to make.

Excerpt:
Obviously, a Kidd-Carter-Terry backcourt raises some major age questions, especially given the punishing schedule this season. Between that and the fact that Brendan Haywood is their only center, you could have made a case for Dallas missing the playoffs entirely — except for two talent infusions to last season’s group. The first is Rodrigue Beaubois’ return after an injury-plagued 2010-11, which should provide some scoring punch when the veterans’ legs are dead. The second comes via the gifting of Lamar Odom from the Lakers.
With Dallas I'm far more concerned about the new pieces
and how long it will take Rick to figure out a rotation with so many strange fits.
Hollinger has been beating the age drum against the Mavs for five years now. I guess he’ll just keep doing it until he gets it right.
Oh look it's you.
Adding fuck-all to the discussion, as usual.
The Spurs, from what I see, fit their main rotation from Ginobili, who is 34; Duncan, who is 35; Parker, who is 29; Jefferson, who is 31; Bonner, who is 31. If someone’s going to be unimpressed by the Mavs on account of their age, the Spurs are placing a lot on those five guys. Yeah, Blair is 22, Leonard is 20, Neal is 27 and Splitter is 26. But I doubt playing them enough to keep the age of the first five from being a concern, would make the Spurs a 3 seed.
i tell the truth; i lie a lot
Looks like they won't amnesty him.
Nevertheless Hollinger floating over the Spurs’ age issues in anointing them #3 is bizarre, unless he really really likes himself some Kawhi Leonard and DeJuan Blair.
i tell the truth; i lie a lot
Kawhi Leonard
is good, I think.

SA was the #1 seed last year.
I don’t really see why it’s that much of a stretch.
I wouldn’t put them there, but I don’t see why it’s laughable.
Denver at 2 is laughable.
Duncan is on his last leg and Ginobili is soon to be 34 and about to play 66 games in 120-130 days.
They did not address the need at C and even lost McDyess. I’m not sold on Splitter either. I don’t see them being a top 4 team this year especially with the compressed schedule.

The long summer
has really helped TD. Given the schedule, Pop will have to be as cautious as ever with minutes, but the Spurs’ long-time experience of playing together (while other teams’ key players are getting used to each other) will actually be a big plus. The Spurs will be right there in the end.
I see Portland, Utah, GS, and Houston battling for the 7th and 8th seed
Along with one of those other 7.. because you know a key injury will strike one of them.
The big thing that worries me with them is big quality beyond LaMarcus.
Not sure how Camby will hold up with the tight schedule.

I like swapping Vince for Brewer.
I like letting Roddy and Dojo play. There’s value in developing those assets.
I like letting Roddy play
undecided about Dominique still, but it’s immaterial to my point anyway. Vince replaces Rudy in the rotation. The addition of West is what will cost those two minutes more than anything else.
by Brett Perryman on Dec 20, 2011 5:54 PM CST up reply actions
Vince isn't strictly a SG, though. He's your backup SF.
If Rudy was a SG/SF type, he would probably still be here.
I love Rudy
just thought it was an overreaction and I took issue with the Deron part of the post more than Rudy.
I even said on the regional site that I wanted Rudy to be the starting two guard this season and was surprised they traded him.
Deron was a whole other thing, as was the Chandler decision
And I’m not sure how it could be an overreaction when all I said was that I was underwhelmed by the moves/additions outside of bringing in Odom. Saying you’re underwhelmed by adding Vince and selling off Rudy/Brewer sure didn’t seem controversial when I typed it, but it was in this environment.
by Brett Perryman on Dec 20, 2011 5:49 PM CST up reply actions
Rudy
was apparently whining behind the scenes before even getting to Dallas about the prospects of having to compete for minutes and not having a defined role.
I don’t care how well he does in Denver, that kind of attitude just won’t work with Carlisle.
Yeah
I have to think that entered into the situation and they really should have been straight on that before they traded for him in the first place. Of course, the response to that is that he probably wasn’t complaining until Carter was signed. It’s hard to know with his weird, moody personality, but the impression I got was that he was excited about things up to that point.
by Brett Perryman on Dec 20, 2011 5:51 PM CST up reply actions
I agree
But even if they don’t sign Carter, what are the odds that Rudy spends the whole year starting or getting the same minute distribution?
When they traded for him I hoped that he would recognize how much better our system would fit him and stop being so hung up on his “role”, and I can only assume the Mavs did as well. But apparently that wasn’t the case.
Monta's in trouble.

After preseason
A rough, probably wrong guess at what minute allocation might look like. Assuming that with a condensed schedule Carlisle will try to dial down most of the old guys’ minutes:
PG Kidd 20-West 13-Beaubois 10-Jones 5
SG Carter 10-Terry 28-Beaubois 5-Jones 5
SF Marion 24-Carter 16-Kidd 8
PF Nowitzki 26-Odom 14-Marion 4-Wright 4
C Haywood 20-Odom 16-Dirk 6-Wright 6
So you have Dirk 32, Odom 30, Kidd 28, Marion 28, Terry 28, Carter 26, Haywood 20, Roddy 15, West 13, Jones 10, Wright 10.
I thought Haywood looked pretty bad in the two games. Unless he starts dominating on defense, I fear he’s such an offensive liability that Carlisle is going to go to smallball lineups a lot.
My one big guess here is that Wright is going to steal the Ianimal’s minutes. Carlisle said he saw Wright as more of a “5/4 than a 4/5”, perhaps hinting at his future usage. While Wright was terrific in garbage time, Mahinmi shot a combined 5/18 and nearly fouled out in the first game in 25 minutes. I think what you sacrifice in bulk you make up for in skill, polish and versatility.
I think the offense is going to focus more on stretching the defense, which they’ll be able to do with Odom/Dirk/Wright at center, drawing opposing bigs out and opening up lanes for Marion and Kidd(two outstanding rebounders for their positions) to gobble up boards.
These are just projections, but one thing they obviously don’t account for is injuries, and I think there’s a good chance that West and Carter will miss time this year, giving Roddy and DoJo more burn than what I have marked down. Both had spectacular moments in the preseason, and some infusion of youth is going to be pretty important in the back-to-back onslaught that is imminent. I also have serious reservations about the perimeter defense with Kidd and Carter starting, and having some speed to counter quick guards will be useful, especially when you’re playing so small in the frontcourt. Jones and Beaubois have a better shot of staying in front of their men, and getting back in transition defense(where the Thunder destroyed Dallas in these two games).
Couple things
I don’t think there’s any way they roll out an 11 man rotation.
And I don’t think Wright is even remotely close to pushing Ian out of the rotation. One garbage time game in the preseason just isn’t going to do that. Maybe it happens over the course of the season, but for now I think Ian is unquestionably the backup.
it's a guess and also partly what I'd like to see
If there was ever a year to have an 11 man rotation, it’s this one, right? The oldest team in the league, a brutal schedule.
