Washington Nationals sign Andres Blanco

ARLINGTON, TX - JUNE 07: Andres Blanco #3 of the Texas Rangers fields the ball during the game against the Detroit Tigers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on June 7, 2011 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Rick Yeatts/Getty Images)

The Washington Nationals have signed former Rangers' utility infielder Andres Blanco to a minor league deal.

Blanco was purchased by the Rangers from the Chicago Cubs towards the end of spring training in 2010, when the Rangers were scrambling to find a utility infielder in the wake of Khalil Greene's failure to report.

Blanco's calling card was his defense -- he was considered an above-average defender at second base, shortstop, and third base, and that was the skill that Ron Washington indicated he was emphasizing in a utility infielder. His playing time dropped in 2011, however, with Michael Young picking up most of the backup at bats at second and third...Blanco had 316 innings at second base and third base in 2010, but only 37 innings at those two positions in 2011.

Blanco was also hampered by a stress fracture in his back, which limited his playing time late in the season and resulted in his being left off the playoff roster.

The Rangers are still in the market for a utility infielder who can handle shortstop defensively, and will likely have a handful of candidates vying for the job on minor league deals this spring.

I think it is stupid

especially since teams who do stupid things – ie Nationals – seem to look at the price for him and say “wow, that’s stupid high.”

I don’t understand the fascination with him beyond the fact that he’s a guy who’s available and controlled for a long time. He’s like that rebound girl. A rebound girl that people are apparently happy to settle for BEFORE being dumped, by the way.

Well I doubt any deal is made until Darvish posting winer is announced.

He just turned 26 and put up mid 3 WAR years in his first two full seasons.

I think if his name was Derek Holland people here would like him a lot more.

Walks a lot and pitches in a pitcher friendly park… but four years of team control for a guy about to hit his prime is a lot of surplus value who has the potential to be very good if his walks go down. Which for guys who can stick as 200 IP pitchers happens a lot. When I pulled the comps for the C.J. article, about half of the 9+% walk rate guys with 400 IP and at least one full season as a starter were able to drop their walk rate significantly.

by Brad on Dec 16, 2011 6:50 PM CST up reply actions

So let's say that it's best case scenario

and Gio improves like his comparable players. You’re saying you’re willing to give up 6 years of Martin Perez + at least another guy for a 50% chance that the guy you trade for might be good?

Plus, a guy like that has a ceiling sure, but GIo Gonzalez sure as hell has a floor. And that plummet to the floor can be pretty damn steep. He’s 26, still on the periphery of that injury nexus. He pitched in a awful park, in front of a great defense. Add to the fact that his fielding independent numbers have at their best been 2nd starter good, I’d be extremely wary of paying Billy Beane a gaggle of prospects for a guy whose best years have been decent, but not great. The cost vs. the expected payoff is pretty damn poor with a guy like Gio Gonzalez.

I think he's good now.

And yes he has a floor… but I think that floor is higher than any of our other five guys in the rotation for 2012.

And the 50% is a chance for him to be great… C.J. Wilson in 2011 great.

A’s defense was awful last year. I think our infield would be a very big improvement.

I also see value in 4 years of Gio right now instead of 6+ years for a guy who’s ceiling isn’t that tremendous amount higher than what Gio is right now and who’s floor is much lower.

If Martin Perez comes up and posts the 8-9 K/9 and 4 BB/9 with a fair amount of ground balls like Gio… are you disappointed? And how soon would you see that happening?

Funny story

Gio Gonzalez actually threw less pitches in the strike zone in 2011 vs. 2010. The Difference was that he had a slight uptick in velocity and people were missing his pitches 4% more vs. 2010.

If you equalize Gio’s HR rate to 10%, which is what it was on the road last year, he becomes pretty close to 2010 Gio. I don’t think it’s a smart move.

by FirebatM3 on Dec 16, 2011 7:24 PM CST up reply actions

Realistic ceiling?

Probably. But Gio has exactly 1 year of #s that can be described as such. If you can realistically say – 2011 Gio Gonzalez is THE Gio Gonzalez going forward and he’s immune to the forces of regression or injury or just plain going from a HR suppressing to a HR conducive park, trading for Gio Gonzalez might not be a bad idea. BUt at the end of the day, he’s a guy who’s had 400 innings with a stable, high walk rate, a guy who has never been known for throwing strikes or clean mechanics, and you’d have to give up at least 1 good and 1 decent prospect to get him.

I think there’s way too many ifs in that scenario to make a trade tenable. For it to work out, alot more things have to go right than wrong.

The thing is – all we have to do to have Derek Holland is to keep him. If we had to give away Martin Perez+ for Derek Holland, he suddenly becomes a whole heck of a lot less desirable.

I'd probably trade Perez for him.

I’m not sure this team will be patient enough with Perez to allow him to develop into his ceiling. If they pull the same shit with Perez that they did with Holland for the first couple of years, I’d rather they go ahead and deal him now and save me the hassle of caring.

I quite like Gio too. As I’ve said, I’m a simple man who looks for IP, K/9 and GB%. His walk rate sucks but it’s not out of the question for him to get it in the 3’s somewhere.

by LiamP on Dec 16, 2011 7:48 PM CST up reply actions

I think they should keep Perez in AAA

for 2 more years.

Let him hone those 3 pitches, and bring him up ready to go, and keep him from ages 22/23 – 28/29

Give him a $13M Matt Moore-esque extension if he looks like he’s going to have it, and he has way more value than Gio brings back in his 4 arb years at that price.

by Jobu. on Dec 16, 2011 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

I doubt that happens.

I’ll guess Perez will be in the bullpen at some point either this year or the next. I assume after they let Colby go next year, and depending on whether Feliz/Ogando fall on their faces this year, he’ll have a shot at the rotation.

I have no interest in signing him to a Matt Moore contract. He is not nor will he ever be as good as Matt Moore, so the reward aspect is greatly diminished.

Even if you were willing to go Perez + Olt for Gio

Why wouldn’t you rather do that for a guy like Niese, and send the good prospects to the NL?

Niese has 4 years left and a lower projected FIP next year.

throw a prospect on top of Perez + Olt, and go for Latos.

by Jobu. on Dec 16, 2011 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

isn't it almost better to be the supposed bridesmaid?

Imagine how Toronto fans will feel when we actually are the high bid…

Conversely if we end up not winning, it won’t be as disappointing to me because now I’m just expecting that all the smoke about the BJs must mean something.

starting to hate the thought of trading for Gio

Sign Oswalt for 1/15 and try to nurse him thru 150 regular season ip and have him healthy in Sept/Oct. Farm system remains entirely intact.

Gio just has so much of his value tied to the fact that he is cheap and controllable for 4 years. That should be more appealing to a true small market team that is budget strapped. I’d rather keep prospect powder dry and go with Oswalt, Holland, Colby, Harrison, Ogando/Feliz/Feldman and the depth at the back end of the bullpen and that is a pitching staff I would be comfortable with.

Trade for Thornton, sign Prince and badaboom..

Quick Darvish facts. There is a high bid. Nippon Ham knows $$$, but not team. No bidding teams know if they’ve won or lost.

More Darvish Facts: I’ve spoken to multiple teams that have bid, the most informative quote I’ve gotten is "we feel our bid is competitive"

That's a very Rangers-y sounding quote...

Also, that’s some refreshing honesty for where we are in this situation rather than coming up with a new way of saying “we know nothing” but then speculating and finding your speculation becoming headlines used as fact.

Thank you, Goldstein.

by MikeEl on Dec 17, 2011 12:28 AM CST up reply actions

My gut feeling is that the Rangers might have outbid the Jays

but don’t want to let any hint of that out so there’s no chance of Nippon backing out on the off chance that Darvish had told them he doesn’t want to go to Texas “where all the racists are”. But if Nippon does accept, Darvish would feel more obligated to Nippon to work out a deal so they get the money.

by MikeEl on Dec 17, 2011 12:32 AM CST up reply actions

It's probably weird to say this

But I hadn’t really considered that the Japanese team hasn’t officially accepted yet while we’re all supposedly sitting here knowing what the team is.

Darvish could potentially (though I don’t think he would) say “Fuck the Blue Jays. I’m not signing there for anything.” Defeats the purpose of the blind bid process to let it leak like that.

I think whatever leak there was on the Blue Jays end might have really been someone in their office speculating

I read that only two people AA and the assistant GM even knew what the bid was, and I doubt they’d leak and risk screwing things up. It doesn’t really matter how small a chance it would be for a leak to affect the outcome, when you’re dealing with such a large amount of money and significant opportunity, you’d probably want to take every precaution not to screw it up.

found it

it was from the Yu Darvish Nightwatch thread. This is the link to the comment with the quoted piece of an article by Bob Elliot of the Toronto Sun, but there was no link to the actual article

Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun is keeping track of the latest Yu Darvish rumblings, saying that the perception is that the Jays outbid both the Rangers and Yankees for his rights, though it’s unclear what the Cubs, Giants, or Mariners may have bid. The view that the Jays have topped both the Yankees and Rangers is, he says, "shared by half a dozen front offices, but no one at 1 Blue Jays Way is talking. "

"I was told Rogers Communications said: ‘Whatever it costs, sign him,’ " an executive told Elliott. "Only Paul Beeston and Alex Anthopoulos know the number on the bid in baseball operations," the executive added.

It sounds precisely like what George King reported earlier in the New York Post, and while I don’t think ownership would have made a statement like that without a strong on-field case having been made for signing Darvish, it’s intriguing that Rogers may be so interested in bringing in a player like this. It makes sense. Fingers crossed. But it also makes for some great PR for an ownership group with an image problem.

by MikeEl on Dec 17, 2011 1:04 AM CST up reply actions

I wonder if that directive from Rogers Communications came down right about the time we suddenly and publicly ran out of money?

It could be the Nippon team is holding off officially accepting it

in hopes of there being a definitive leak on the winning team before the deadline. From their standpoint it would probably make them “lose face” to accept the bid then have Darvish not sign.

Also, my guess is that there are only 6 people that know what the Rangers bid, JD, Thad, Nolan, Bob, Ray and the guy in the MLB office collecting all the bids. I’m betting not one of those guys is going to leak the information.

when was this interview

It doesn’t much matter where he likes, he doesn’t have leverage. All the talk about him being willing to play another year in Japan is all fine and good but if he does go back because he squabbled over a couple million in his contract, he would have cost his team a possible 50M. If he gets posted a 2nd time next year, teams aren’t going to be as desperate for starters (there are more on the market) and it is unlikely he gets the same kind of bid, imo. As much as I would like Darvish, I’d rather go after Fielder then Greinke via trade this season, or via FA next season.
