Christmas Eve Rangers things
Merry Christmas Eve, everyone...
Yorvit Torrealba was involved in an unpleasant incident yesterday, in which he took a swing at the home plate umpire in a winter league game in Venezuela. The Rangers are reportedly "looking into it," although I doubt this will result in any sort of significant action from the team.
Lyle Spencer -- he of Jeff Mathis "27 outs" fame -- has a piece at mlb.com about the Rangers' winning the bidding on Yu Darvish, and how that impacts the Rangers' rivalry with the Angels.
Buster Olney's picks right now include the Rangers winning the A.L. West.
And T.R. Sullivan has a story up where he talks to Derek Holland about Christmas.

Don’t remember the terms but a lot of people were happy.

when does the lame extra wild card go into effect?
I thought it was next season.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
probably.....
MLB and fox want it in quick so that they can still get the Red Sox and Yankees in the playoffs.
It is all because of those pesky Tampa Rays.

He could very well serve jail time in Venezuela. The Rangers might want to start looking for a new backup if this effects his ability to come back to the States.
Merry Christmas otherwise

No source, speculation
If a player did that to an umpire in California, he would be booked for assault. I think Texas has the same law.
by Mark from OC on Dec 24, 2011 1:59 PM CST up reply actions
Wouldn't it be battery?
Or assault and battery?
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.

Doesn't California have both assault and battery? Could've sworn it did.
Think you’re right about Texas having just assault, though.

Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"
Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
He didn't do it in Texas, so any similar Texas law would be irrelevant.

Huh
Assault is pretty much the same anywhere
by Mark from OC on Dec 24, 2011 3:12 PM CST up reply actions
Okay, but what difference does it make if Texas would arrest him for assault & battery?
They can’t, because the offense occurred in Venezuela. Texas law has no bearing on the matter, because the incident didn’t occur in Texas.

You misread my intent. My intent was to provide what the law is here because I have no idea if they have the same, or a similar, law overseas.

Oh and is he a citizen?
If not, and here on a work permit, if he is convicted of assault bye bye for a year, at the minimum. A crime against a person is grounds for automatic revoking of a work permit.

Several states actually have greater penalties for assaulting an umpire or sports official.
Texas included.

I doubt that's actually the question.
Enforcement will be the issue.

Trust me when I say Torrealba will not do jail time. There are haves and have nots there, based on one’s family’s wealth. She told me a story about a drunken Venezuelan driving recklessly through downtown, running red lights, and struck and killed an Olympic gold medalist visiting the country, drawing all kinds of publicity. The Venezuelan got a $500 fine for his crime.
