Sullivan: Rangers "not optimistic" about signing Wilson

T.R. Sullivan writes that the Rangers are "not optimistic" about signing free agent lefty C.J. Wilson, and expect him to instead sign with either the Angels or the Marlins.

I don't think that should be a surprise to anyone. The Rangers have publicly said they wanted Wilson back, and I think at the right price, they probably would like to have him back. The "right price," though, wasn't likely to be close to what Wilson was seeking, or close to what he was likely to command in the free agent marketplace.

Jim Bowden just tweeted that Ron Washington says the Rangers went to five years on C.J. Wilson in the offer they made last night. The devil is in the details, of course...there's still the question of whether the offer is five years guaranteed, or has a vesting option, like the "six year" Adrian Beltre contract that is really five years with a vesting option.

Meanwhile, people are also tweeting that the Florida Marlins have gone to six years for C.J., which I think it is unlikely the Rangers were ever going to do.

Well its now up to a hour and 12 minutes from his post, presumably some chunk of time since he would have signed.

Really does seem like a reporter would know by now if it was actually a done deal and not just “close” that could be interrupted by a Rangers counter.

I honestly think saying what HF45 did was a big deal is silly since the exact same information inovlved in the joke had already been posted. If HF45 had posted that picture first or before eclou’s post, than by all means, that is against the rules and a jackass move.

by rangersfan32 on Dec 7, 2011 2:55 PM CST up reply actions

x
When Bell was modified, it was decided that a team signing him would not have to sacrifice a pick at all to get him. Instead, the Padres will get a compensation pick (sandwich A, we can still call it) after the first round is over. They will also get a second-round pick right in front of the Marlins’ second-round selection.

Here’s the kicker. Even though the Marlins did not have to give up that second-round pick to the Padres, it’s not available to the Mets as compensation for the Reyes signing. Because Bell signed first, that pick in effect is a part of that signing, even though its part is that it didn’t have to be forfeited. Instead, the Mets will get a Comp A pick and the Marlins’ selection in the third round.

by rangersfan32 on Dec 7, 2011 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

Had the Marlins officially signed Reyes first, the Mets would have received that second-round pick. In other words, they get penalized a round because of the Bell signing. That might be something that doesn’t bother the Marlins, given they are in the same division as the Mets. But it’s probably likely that Bell himself will love it. He’s not exactly a fan of the Mets from his time in their system and the fact that his signing cost them a round might give him a little chuckle.

by rangersfan32 on Dec 7, 2011 3:00 PM CST up reply actions

Except that the Mets are getting the 2nd round pick.

And the Padres are getting a comp pick right before that pick.

When Bell was modified, it was decided that a team signing him would not have to sacrifice a pick at all to get him. Instead, the Padres will get a compensation pick (sandwich A, we can still call it) after the first round is over. They will also get a second-round pick right in front of the Marlins’ second-round selection.

I was talking about the Mets and Reyes getting the third rounder

Thus, we would get the fourth rounder if CJ signed with Marlins.

But, I recent developments on changes just posted an hour ago:

Major League Baseball said last week that the Mets would get a third-round pick from Miami if Jose Reyes signed there, not a second-round pick.

Apparently, things have changed. The Padres will get pick 9a in the second round created from thin air for losing Heath Bell. And the Mets will get pick 9b in the second round, Newsday reported.

The Mets also get a pick between the first and second rounds.

I'm still unclear on a team signing multiple type a's

Is it in order of when they signed them or the ranking of type a’s? If it was order, wouldn’t the Mets have received the 2nd rounder over the Padres? They were initially getting the third. I know they added the picks in the middle of rounds to make it even more confusing.

Buehrle will jump at a 4-year deal, since it’s not clear any other team is going to be as high on him as the Marlins.

That will take the Marlins out of the Wilson bidding, which leaves LAA as the very-much-most-likely winner.

I think the Rangers should up their offer on CJ

If he’s really going to sign with the Angels, I’d shell out another $15M over the next 5 years (or whatever the contract-difference is) to keep him off their staff.

by Jobu. on Dec 7, 2011 3:47 PM CST reply actions

CJ as an Angel doesn't scare me that much.

He’s not a soft-tosser, so our offense shouldn’t have big problems with him. I’d love to have him back and I’d hate to see him play for a division rival, but I don’t think he’s the difference maker in the balance of power in the AL West.

by Athos on Dec 7, 2011 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

Not sure how to respond to this

the soft-tossing lefty thing is dumb, no offense.

But, even if you think WE can succeed against him, he still gets a lot of starts against the rest of baseball, which should translate into a lot of wins.

by Jobu. on Dec 7, 2011 3:54 PM CST up reply actions

but you can't just shell out another $15mil

to keep him from going to a division rival. Desperate moves rarely work out.

This offseason doesn’t end when CJ picks where he wants to play for the next several years.

by elvis1isking on Dec 7, 2011 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

Don't you think the Angels wish they'd done just that with Beltre last year

The name of the game is making the playoffs. Get to the playoffs and you can win a WS.

Signing a 5-WAR pitcher away from your rival is a 6-7 win swing for the Rangers.

by Jobu. on Dec 7, 2011 4:03 PM CST up reply actions

the Angels probably wish they hadn't traded for Wells

and gave up Napoli more than they regret not getting Beltre.

You don’t know that the extra money wouldn’t be bidding against yourself. If CJ really wants to play in LAA then he’ll go there unless we overpay.

I believe the Rangers put a fair offer out to him. It’s CJ’s choice now. If he doesn’t choose to stay here, JD will have to go find another way to improve the club.

by elvis1isking on Dec 7, 2011 4:08 PM CST up reply actions

I think he wants to sign with us, but we aren't giving up the same dough

And LAA has a lot of advantages for him, too.

Also, strawman on the Vernon trade…

by Jobu. on Dec 7, 2011 4:21 PM CST up reply actions

Doesn't have anything to do with whether they wish they'd signed Beltre away from us
the Angels probably wish they hadn’t traded for Wells
and gave up Napoli more than they regret not getting Beltre.

by Jobu. on Dec 7, 2011 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

ok. I'll be more clear

No. I don’t think they wish they had ponied up more money for Beltre.
I do think they regret the Wells trade (and losing of Napoli).

An addendum or expansion on your original point, sure, but not a strawman arguement. In no way am I using the regret over the Wells trade as a reason they don’t regret the Beltre signing.

by elvis1isking on Dec 7, 2011 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

Gotcha, then I misinterpreted.

If they’d signed Beltre and kept Napoli, there’s a good chance they beat the Rangers out for the West, so why wouldn’t they regret that decision?

by Jobu. on Dec 7, 2011 4:36 PM CST up reply actions

Callaspo was decent for them

and he definately fits the Sciocia (that’s probably mispelled but fuck him anyway) player mold.

And Callaspo doesn’t cost the Beltre money either, so all in all while I agree that with Beltre and Napoli things are different last year I don’t think they really regret missing out on Beltre.

Napoli and Wells though… I think that pretty much is what got Reagins fired. I would assume they all regret that trade a lot.

by elvis1isking on Dec 7, 2011 4:41 PM CST up reply actions

That's exacly what the Angels

are trying to do. Trying to put up a contract that’s comparable w/ Texas’ and scare the Rangers into over paying. This team doesn’t need CJ that goddamn bad.

I don’t care where CJ goes, he makes me grind my teeth, if the Rangers keep him at a reasonable price, then great, but if he goes else where, I have no problem hating him instantly.

by Jobu. on Dec 7, 2011 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

Yea they have a good chance,

but I think that they have to get a bat in that lineup to keep up. If they keep that roto together, then I think it’s unlikely they add a bat. Plus, I have confidence in the FO that if the Angels do get CJ, they will look for a TORP to trade for that will keep the Rangers well at the top of the West.

CJ Wilson Update

According to CJ Wilson, he has not yet made a decision about his contract offers.

The Rangers, Angels and Marlins appear to be the most likely candidates, but he still does not know where he will play next season. Wilson said "I have not made a decision. I’m still considering. It’s like I’m being torn in different directions".

I'm pretty underwhelmed with what the Marlins have accomplished

Reyes, Bell and Buerhle?? Meh. In the NL East that will probably not get it done.

I hope CJ stays, but if he wants to leave fine.

This Thing isn’t falling apart without him, and the offseason isn’t over. If he thinks he has a better chance to win in Anaheim after going to back to back World Series’ in Texas then more power to him. Good luck with all that.

Sounds like the Marlins are out now on Cespedes.

Wonder where he goes instead.

So, if they were't willing to do a fifth or sixth year on CJ and weren't willing to a fourth year on Beuhrle

do we feel good about them doing $100 mil on Yu (much more of an unknown)?

Yeah, they aren't getting Yu.

They care more about signing Hamilton than getting Yu, it seems like.

Not really sure what their plan is.
