Words from Wilson via TR
The Rangers, Angels and Marlins appear to be the most likely candidates, but he still does not know where he will play next season. Wilson said "I have not made a decision. I’m still considering. It’s like I’m being torn in different directions".

But, we know from Ryan that the Rangers aren’t likely to budge on their offer, as he’s on record that he expects Wilson to sign elsewhere for more years/money.

That's a horrific idea.

Considering Sanchez and Moreland are basically the same dude from different sides of the plate, you’re trading your top pitching prospect, a quality major league arm and one of your best offensive players for a dude who’s probably not going to stay healthy and will be facing league/ballpark regression, plus a guy who’s just going to push Sanchez to the bench.

But even so, in this hypothetical

even if you don’t want to play Sanchez and Morrison and have one be terrible at outfield defense, Sanchez has trade value.

The question mark in the deal is Johnson, not Sanchez.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Dec 7, 2011 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

True on Johnson, that's the real problem.

I can’t imagine that Sanchez will have a real ton more trade value than Moreland has though, considering Moreland is younger, more controllable and no doubt cheaper.

I just see that part of the deal as a complete wash.

I got a broken brain
The doctor’s saying that I’m overpaid

by LSJ on Dec 7, 2011 8:23 PM CST up reply actions

Moreland is two years younger

but I’d be a fair bit more wary about his bat. Sanchez, given how he boosted his walk rate, looks like a dependable .340-.350 wOBA bat for the next three years, which is something I’d personally value over Moreland’s persistent question marks.

I beg to differ

I’ve probably gone to 400 Rangers games in my lifetime and watch about 120 games a season on TV. You can criticize me for not making coherent points, but trust me when I say I follow the game closely. CJ was not well-liked by his teammates (per Evan Grant interview on the Ticket yesterday) and he called baseball players a bunch of beer-swilling douchebags in Escalades (not exact quote, but it’s from an SI article from last year). He didn’t exactly epitomize the definition of a team player. That’s the only reason I compared him to A-Rod and Tex.

by Rangers Fan Mike on Dec 7, 2011 6:47 PM CST up reply actions

Evan. Grant. Is. Not. A. Reliable. Source.

Besides, he was one of Hamilton’s best friends on the team, iirc, because Hamilton knew he could hang with CJ without worrying about alcohol, drugs, etc. Pretty hated, obviously.

I wasn't comparing CJ's baseball talent to A-Rod's or Tex's

I was only saying he was never embraced by his teammates. Evan Grant was asked on the Ticket yesterday if CJ was well-liked by his teammates, and his response was a rather emphatic no. They seemed put off by his arrogant comments (like his WS interview talking about how he could land the team plane), and he caught a lot of flack per an SI article last year where it was revealed that he basically said that most ballplayers are a bunch of beer-swilling douchebags in Escalades. He didn’t epitomize the definition of a team player.

First of all, Dubya had a better opinion of Saddam than EG has of CJ

That isn’t a reliable source. Evan Grant also thinks Mike Young was the AL MVP. Bring me information from a real journalist and we will talk. CJ never rips his teammates like A-Tex did. CJ never demaned to be traded like A-Tex did (that would be the guy EG is always knob slobbing on, TWICE). The only think CJ ever “demanded” was an honest to god shot at the starting rotation cause he thought he could do it.

Guess what, he was right. And because of it we had one of the best starting pitchers in the AL the last two year. You want Kevin Millwood back? I mean is that was this is really about, the fact that, god for-fucking-bid has hobbies? Are you mad at Derek Holland cause he was goofy too?

Also: we have no idea if he's offering the Angels a "hometown discount"

The contract hasn’t even been signed. And I really don’t think he “put the Rangers through the ringer.” I think the Rangers (quite rightly) thought that his asking price was going to be higher than they wanted to pay, and so they gave him what they felt was a fair offer and said “if you can get higher than that, bully for you.”

That particular “hood” is and has always been referred to as “Berkeley Place.” We had yard of the month awards, not mullett of the month contests. Probably half the kids in BP went to private school, either Country Day, Trinity Vallety, or Nolan.

If you aren’t from Fort Worth, hearing someone say they grew up in SW Fort Worth might sound “streety.” It shouldn’t. NW Fort Worth, NE Fort Worth, and SE Fort Worth are all more street. Much more.Southwest Fort Worth is hands down the safest, most middle class area of town. If Scorcese was remaking Mean Streets for the Big F, Southwest Fort Worth wouldn’t rate.

White Settlement is north of I-30, so I don't see that as SW FW at all

Carswell is the sticks, well past FW city limits, and never very south, just west. That is where Scoop was raised for a time, so that spot definitely has some trash cred, fwiw.

Berry street I would call Central/TCU/Forest Park area. Not southwest. And also, notably, just a few blocks from that notorious gladiator breeding ground known as Berkeley Place.

Am I being too naive, here?

Does anyone think the fact that CJ would basically be acting like a traitorous dick if he signed with LAA has any sway?

I mean, I just have a hard time imagining it having 0 impact, but I’m probably wrong.

The Chicago-Texas series arrived this week with a little extra intrigue, in the form of a budding feud between the Rangers’ closer and the White Sox manager.

In this corner: C.J. Wilson, aspiring novelist, Taoist, movie critic, Guitar Hero devotee and a California free spirit in the Barry Zito mold.

Guillen
In the other corner: Ozzie Guillen, former All-Star shortstop-turned-World Series skipper, old-school guy, beat writer’s best friend and serial provocateur.

During a recent series in Arlington, Guillen ripped Wilson for his demeanor on the mound. He called Wilson “cocky” and accused him of lacking “class” and showing up Chicago’s hitters.
Like many Guillen showdowns, this one was as fleeting as a midsummer rainstorm. Guillen seemed determined to let things die Monday, and Wilson took a pass on the inflammatory rhetoric — telling reporters that he just likes “throwing hard and having a Mohawk and being an idiot.” Barring a sudden surge of testosterone from one combatant or the other, you can file the incident in the soon-to-be-forgotten bin.

Robbie Ross as the headliner.

Though the Cubs would probably have to eat all of Garza’s salary and trade us Byrd as well to make that deal happen. Ross is so elite you guys!

I would love to get Byrd in a deal

If we deal for Garza. Could provide a nice stopgap until our Cuban overlord takes over.

If I had a gun to my head and had to pick one pitcher to pitch a game to save my life.... I'd pick 1999 Rick Helling.

I may be wrong

(And without looking) Was that better than Borbon/Gentry? What effect would putting him in our lineup/our park/not getting his face broken by a pitch do to that slash? If he was here wouldn’t that make it easier on Ron to make Josh a permanent LF?

Also I just really liked the dude as a human and player of professional baseball.

The problem is he makes $6.5M and Wash would probably play him too much, imo

If they took on his contract, and we used him as the CF/RH-bench bat we’ve always needed, that would be amazing.

He wouldn’t be the worst option as a starter, even, I just don’t want to pay that salary.
