C.J. Wilson to Anaheim: 5 years, $77.5 million
UPDATE -- It is 5 years, $77.5 million
Jon Heyman is reporting that C.J. Wilson has agreed to a five year, $75 million deal with the Anaheim Angels.
Okay, remember how I said that I thought the Pujols contract was a lousy contract and would hurt the Angels long-term?
Don't feel the same way about this deal. 5 years, $75 million is a fairly reasonable price for C.J., and I would have been happy if the Rangers' locked him up for that amount.
I've been resigned for a while to the fact that C.J. would be leaving, and been okay with the idea that he was going to the Angels, because I assumed the Angels would be moneywhipping him. They didn't, though...they signed C.J. to a reasonable deal that gives them a pretty stacked rotation.
This is a problem. I still don't think that the Angels are better than the Rangers, but this Wilson contract is a pretty good signing for Anaheim.

If we can't match 5/$75 for CJ...
I’m pretty concerned.

Does it?
Maybe we’re assuming the Rangers can spend more than they can.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I think the Rangers are just more prudent
than we would like them to be in a case like this. I think they just see their current rotation as a better value going forward than spending on CJ.

Depends on if we spend that money elsewhere
We apparently were willing to go 12-13 mil for Buehrle so I dont see why 15.5 for CJ was that big a stretch.
if we come out of this and go sign Prince it’ll lessen the sting but if we sit on our hands and go “spend” money on Hamilton and Nelly extensions its going to piss me off. For one thing their salaries are already budgetted into next years payroll so it wouldn’t really be adding anything onto that.
Beuhrle at 3 years
was different than CJ at 5.

Im fucking tires of worrying about 15 million dollars in 2015
Thats what small market clubs do
do you think the Angels are worried about Pujols’ contract in 2017 right now?
No theyll worry about that when the time comes. We currently have ZERO committments beyond 2015 and a very strong farm system along with a supposed big money tv deal to be in effect by then. Stop pinching pennies!!

I have a forward looking perspective
But I also see a ownership group that has said they intend to raise payroll and keep a competitive team. I see a tv deal that is supposed to give us the ability to maintain a high payroll level. I see a farm system that is the key to being able to handle a bloated contract or two.
And I also see a FO that apparently is pinching pennies and letting a homegrown TORP walk for a very reasonable deal and also apparently not even remotely interested in a 28 year old elite hitting 1B when the competition for him is at its very lowest.
trust in JD
I do think they have a plan. They have players to extend this offseason. They built a farm system to replace players that leave via FA. I’m not going to panic, yet. :)
I understand this thinking,
but building solely from the farm and extending players is not a way to have consistent success. The FO seems to be very hesitant on spending any money. The Beltre deal was great, and the Napoli trade was smart, but other than that the FO has not done much. That typically does not lead to long term success

Our farm system isn't built to replace guys in the next couple years though
Our farm system is built to provide us with a plethora of young good pitching but on the offensive side most of our positional prospects are 3+ years away from cracking the majors while our current roster will be FA within 2 in most cases.
We have Profar, Olt, and Martin as guys who could possibly help in the next 2 years.

but I don’t see them in dire need of positional players, and if they want something they can also trade and they do have prospects coming up that give them options.

I think you are being obtuse
to the inherent risks involved with CJ and certainly Prince.
Going whole-hog for Prince is a bad fucking idea. Get over it. There’s a decent enough chance that he’ll enter a decline phase sooner than normal and could decline at a faster rate than normal that it’s stupid to give him $20+ million for the next 8 to 10 years. The risk to payroll is just too great.
I do think they should have signed CJ at 5/77, but we don’t know that they didn’t offer that to him (or something close). Stop being so over-reactionary and accusing an ownership that has publicly stated they want to grow the payroll and remain competitive of “pinching pennies.”

and half the games will be played there instead of 1/2 the games being played in a no state income tax state… sounds like a little more than 5% difference in pay.
That only matters
if the Rangers make an offer that close.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
but also
Going into a negotiation and saying “we’re only offering slightly less than LAA because of the income tax thing” would be incredibly fucking lame. Any player would feel disrespected by such an approach.

definitely the exception, though

Nolan and company...
have already said they don’t like the big deals for FA pitchers. I don’t think they’re going to give a big deal to a guy who hasn’t even pitched in MLB. Even if he’s only 25 and the scouts like him.
I just don’t see it happening, I guess we’ll find out though.

OK. Let's take a deep breath for a moment.
Next year is going to be the Angels’ best chance. With their payroll — Weaver’s deal, Pujols’ deal, Wilson’s deal — they’re going all in for basically the next two years. They’re locked in to what they’ve got right now. No FA signings next year, no extensions, no trades where they take on money. This is their team, period, for the next few years, and presumably, with Pujols and Wilson hitting their respective ages, next year is their best shot.
So this year will be very telling. It’s acceptable to be very worried about the Angels in 2012 and probably 2013. But beyond that? They’re hamstrung.

they are not hamstrung
go look at their payroll commitments at Cot’s Contracts over the next few years. They will be fine.

They'll trade Santana for some salary relief, most likely.
Or even Haren, though I’d bet Santana.
I wouldn’t assumed they’re done for 2012, or how much money they’ll have going forward. My concern about the Angels is always that Moreno will decide he’s the Red Sox, West.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
They can trade Santana
and still have payroll room to add Ramirez at 3B right now.

yeah, a Santana/Haren for Ramirez trade would suck
but if Hanley doesn’t want to play 3B for MIA, not sure he would want to for LAAAA

though, theoretically
the Angels could certainly offer Santana and a lot more. But I don’t see the Marlins trading Ramirez and getting expensive players in return.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
We just don't know.
It depends on how much Ramirez goes for, and how much the Angels are prepared to spend on payroll this year. If they’re going completely gonzo… yeah.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
I don't think they do that
I think they’ve made their big moves, but yeah, they could, they do have the financial wherewithal to make it happen and still be ok going forward next year.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
I can't see them trading Santana for nothing.
If this is where they’re stopping for payroll, and they want another starter and a bullpen piece for Santana, they’re not going to get much more than $5-7 million in salary relief. Can’t see that paying for Ramirez.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
if they want Ramirez
I assume they’d also maybe deal Kendrick. And what do they do with Morales now? They have options, but at this point I’d be shocked if they also signed Ramirez.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
I have to imagine they think Morales is done.
And that they think the rest of the league would see that, too, if a trade started moving forward — and so he has little value.
I can’t see them trading Kendrick — even with Pujols, they need him.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
We need to some how sneakily and cheapily acquire Morales...
And pray for the Angels to Rangers rebirth effect to take hold.

Match? I am terrible at this stuff.
A burden should never be something out of your control.
Well best case is
Feliz gets comfortable with all his pitches again and Ogando can last 200 innings and learns another off speed pitch. Then we get 2010 or playoff Colby and Harri and Dutch keep progressing.
Then you have a rotation that still isn’t quite as good as the Angels but our lineup is far far superior.
At least I get to see the Rangers when they play the Twins now.
Best case is everyone steps up and their starting pitching and bullpen absorb the hit.
That is, they don’t blow as many leads as last year, even though they don’t take as many leads with Wilson gone. So, say, a wash, or close to it, with the pitching.
Worst case is that Lewis is the same pitcher, Holland and Harrison are inconsistent, Ogando’s not a starter, Feldman’s meh in his place, Feliz has a very rough first season, and Nathan is toast. In that case, I think a 5-6 WAR loss is not out of the question.
Of course, this assumes nothing else happens.

You seem to think he won't decline with age.
I also fully expect his walk rate to pick back up. He was well below career average last year. I think it’s a loss, but I also um unsure what years 4 and 5 with CJ at $16m/yr would be like.

I completely agree with this.
No urgency with CJ. I trust JD and our staff at internal valuations and external. They must have felt that the replaceable value internally (or through other plans) exceeded signing CJ for the terms he wanted. Who knows?
I’m not upset at any of this. JD and co. have led us to two straight World Series berths, and there have been things that we, as BBS GMs, aren’t privy to and thought were questionable, but we were there.
They have a game plan and I think we on the board have a limited mindset to always look at next year only, when I think that is a very quick way to run a franchise into the ground.
We might not make the WS every year, but if we put ourselves in a position to be good most years and great a few years, then I’d rather do that then sell the farm to be great for a year or two just to handicap ourselves later.

I'm at my desk, actually, which isn't in anything resembling a corner.
It was three to four weeks ago.
AJM had written:
Nolan supposedly didn’t want to go 5 years for Cliff Lee. I would be surprised if they went 5 years for CJ, unless the 5th year was a hard-to-reach vesting option…200 IP in 2015 or 400 IP in 2014-15, for example.
And I replied:
I could see that, sure. Something like 4 years, $60 million with the hard-to-reach vesting option?
Adam responded:
I think Texas would do that
I don’t think CJ takes that deal. Weird market for him right now.
The two LA teams don’t have money to spend. The Yankees aren’t interested in him. Boston could be a fit, but they’ve got a lot of dead money locked up in pitchers and probably don’t want to moneywhip him.
Philly isn’t signing a free agent starter. Neither is San Fran.
He likely is going to have a choice between staying here and leaving money on the table, or signing with an also run for the most money.
And I agreed:
I doubt Wilson takes that deal either, but maybe he’ll surprise us. I agree with you about his most likely options, which is why I think Daniels has played this correctly so far.
We were obviously wrong about one of the LA teams having money to spend, although, as I’ve written before, I was concerned about the Angels stepping up for Wilson as far back as early August.

That’s for sure. I’ll wear that.
I stand by my statement that Daniels had played things correctly as of November 13. To the present’s another matter. If Daniels did tell Wilson that he should come to him with any offers to see if the Rangers would match it, for example, I wouldn’t argue that was “correct.”
But all I want to do is establish (for any readers who don’t know your track record of lying about what I’ve written) that I don’t think Daniels played this “perfectly.”

It’s the Mariners’ fault
"The fattest countries have the biggest tits" -Texas Jihad, 10-12-11
from fangraphs
Dan Haren‘s only under team control through 2013, and if they hope to keep him slotted into their rotation behind Jered Weaver, he’s going to require a pretty significant contract extension, probably somewhere north of $100 million on his own. Likewise, Ervin Santana is a free agent after 2013, and there’s already talk that the team will try to trade him now that they have Pujols and Wilson in the fold. Meanwhile, starting catcher Chris Iannetta can void his contract to become a free agent next winter, while second baseman Howie Kendrick, shortstop Erick Aybar, and quality infielder Maicer Izturis are set to hit the open market as well.
It’s simply going to be cost prohibitive to retain all or even most of those guys, so the Angels have likely chosen Pujols over retaining their in-house players who will be up for big raises in the not too distant future. I don’t know that spending $25 million per year on Pujols is actually going to provide a better return than using that money to lock up some combination of Aybar, Kendrick, and Haren, and if the Angels have to let several of those players go to keep their payrolls at reasonable levels, it’s not clear that they’ve actually improved their ability to contend during the time when Pujols still projects as an elite player.
The Angels are now contenders in 2012, but I don’t know if the present value added for the next year or two is worth the long term consequences of this contract. The Angels are going to need a lot of things to break their way in order for this to work.
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

That contract could have easily been matched. Perhaps they think that any one of Holland/Harrison/Feliz will be = or > CJ going forward. Or perhaps something bigger is in the works.

There’s nothing out there that suggests that the Rangers were really going after him, and like you said, we still have a good, young rotation ahead of us (unless we really fuck up and do something stupid like Holland and prospects for Garza).
Even with this all, I’ve never viewed Wilson as anything but a good number two guy. Even through last year and before the playoffs I felt that he just didn’t have the stuff to lead the rotation. We have a higher ceiling in our rotation than the Angels do, and that’s going to pay off in the future.
The Angels have a two year window with their money whipping. The Rangers have a possible five year run still in them. The onus is on L.A. to get it done fast; we still have the edge.

The Astros recent performance suggests they’ll be bad next year. The Rangers recent performance suggests they’ll be good next year.
But that doesn’t mean teams can’t dramatically improve from year to year.

I dont think it was no interest
I think it was clearly he was our plan B
We haven’t been given any indication Prince is our plan B this year
The Prince thing has been like the anti-Beltre.
With Beltre, it was clear that there was some interest from the Rangers but everyone wondered how it would work given the options the Rangers already had at 3rd.
With Prince, everybody sees how it could work position-wise, but we haven’t heard of any interest by the Rangers.

They could use some position players who can hit. Between Smoak, Carp and some other easily acquirable depth, they don’t project to be as bad as they have been recently in the defensively-limited-masher category.

I do have faith in JD though and there are options out there… hope they can come up with something that doesn’t involved extending Hamilton.

Yes
We need to take a deep breath and look at track record. JD has made some good moves over the past few years and it has paid off. I look at it as CJ really wanted to pitch in LA and it would have taken an WOW offer to keep him here. And when I see the Pujols deal I cringe at that kind of money for a player who is past is prime years. Don’t get me wrong. He is still talented. But how many 25 million dollar seasons does he have left in him? I’m going to hope for the best because its all I can do.
What are we at the park for except to win? I'd trip my mother. I'd help her up, brush her off, tell her I'm sorry. But mother don't make it to third. ~Leo Durocher
I think if CJ spuned a 5/75 offer from us or a 5/80 offer from us you woldn't see nearly the vitrol toward the FO
It would be aimed at CJ. But since apparently we didn’t make a credible offer you have to blame the FO a bit regardless of how their past moves have panned out
Yep.
If the Angels got him for 6/95 or some such, there would be much less anger to the FO.

Also, JD can be very good and the Rangers could not win the division given that they are apparently going up against a team that can outspend them by $50M every year.

So... one of the things I was thinking about while driving to work...
Is that Rangers from a PR perspective need to do SOMETHING to build enthusiasm. I completely understand their risk aversion from a roster construction stand point…
But… I think it will be more challenging for them to sell season tickets compared to how easy it was last year coming off of a World Series that broke the hearts of their fans and seeing the best hitter and best pitcher in free agency go to our rival, with CJ coming from us.
I’m not sure what that move is… but there really does need to be something to market. This is still the entertainment business and I think there’s a lot of potential revenue they may lose if they don’t take the bad taste out of the our mouths.

Interesting that the Rangers asked for that commitment from the fans just a couple of days before this went down. It’s like they knew CJ was gone and knew the fans would be pissed and might not re-new.

Marlins were supposedly 6 years.
if the Rangers didn’t budge much off their previous 4/48 offer the Marlins may have been 6/85 (close enough to almost twice) but he would be taking the higher AAV by going to LA
But should we kill him for that?

Not saying CJ hasn’t always been boisterous, just saying he shouldn’t bag on the team. The team was a part of his success too.
Honestly,
I have a hard time believing that the distaste of CJ’s personality by some in the Rangers organization didn’t play a role here. I have no hard evidence to back that up…

We just don’t know exactly how they value those WAR over a five-year contract, given their budget and the salary issues to come.
Based on the Wilson negotiations, I’d say there are more budgetary constraints than most here thought, leading to a tough analysis of marginal cost of wins…

What is the payroll level people expect for the Angels in the next 5 years, and the Rangers in the next 5 years?
I trust the front office, but running a payroll $50 mil behind the Angels is tough.

He said they told him what they were generally willing to do and it wasn’t even in the ballpark of the other teams.
The Rangers clearly did not want to re-sign CJ. I don’t like it, but obviously there is a legitimate debate. Sigh.
I didn't see the Wilson tweet before this
The way he was talking on ESPN sounded like there was a formal offer.
Didn't to me, but in any case hes clearly saying they wern't even close so it couldn't have been a meaningful one if it was formal.
I was responding to Josey claiming there was no offer made whatsoever by FO
Even if it was a formal offer that was way off base, it’s still an offer.
Daniels and this front office have earned my trust
If they did not match this offer for Wilson, then there was a good reason.

that seems right
though I’d be pretty shocked if Wilson got over 6 WAR. He pitched 220 innings and had his career best walk rate in 2011 and still only got to 5.9. That walk rate was still just worse than league average (I think, without looking it up) and I do not see him repeating that. And I don’t see the Angels’ defense helping him quite as much as the Rangers did this year.

If they get good value for Santana then it wouldn’t matter if the value is in the rotation or somewhere else. Or they might not trade him.
I recall CJ had 6 WAR and Santana a little over 3 WAR in 2011

Colby
Holland
Harrison
Ogando
Feliz
Feldman
Kirkman
Ramirez
Perez

Eh,
I think Kirkman is in the same long man/spot starter role that Feldman is in. I think they’ll bring in some NRI to add a bit of depth before you get to NeRam and Perez. Also, I think Perez is probably above NeRam….though it wouldn’t surprise me if they put NeRam into the bullpen sooner.

similar, in a way, to TX not stepping up with a close enough offer for Wilson
Pujols feels a bit disrespected. We’re dealing with huge egos here. If a new team comes along and puts up a huge offer, for that much more, it looks great compared with your old team that tried to sort of lowball you both preseason and now.
It was plain that both the Rangers and Cardinals had prepared for life after Wilson and Pujols left, and were only willing to re-sign their players if the price wasn’t too high. No surprise that either went to LAA in that situation.

From Evan
Rangers GM Jon Daniels admitted being surprised by Albert Pujols’ decision to sign with the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, but indicated the Rangers won’t react to the Angels bold signings of Pujols and WIlson.
The Angels agreed to terms with both for a combined total of approximately $327 million.
“I don’t see this as a punch-counterpunch kind of thing,” Daniels said. “We’ve got parameters that we are working with. We’ve just got to find a way to win.”
Daniels said he was not surprised by Wilson’s decision. The Rangers never made a formal offer to Wilson, but discussed parameters that did not extend beyond four years. Wilson, who had been seeking six years and $100 million or more, was not willing to take that length of contract.

I’m just formulating this idea.
We know they like athletic, ‘complete’ players. We know they don’t like long-term commitments. And, apparently, we know they can’t afford to spend like the Angels.

The 10th highest payroll was $105 mil last year. The Rangers will be around that level.
Unfortunately, I hoped in their World Series contending years that the owners would be willing to go to around 4-6th in payroll. That’s when you should be spending your cash. A big market after back to back World Series? When’s a better time to spend? The ceiling just isn’t as high as I hoped.
Oh and the Angels became the Red Sox. That sucks too.
