Suggestion...

Contact the ChiSox about Konerko and Thornton. I know Paulie has been with the ChiSox forever, but he has to see them unloading everyone and I’d think he’d be willing to move.

Find out what that move would cost. If you’re willing to eat all that salary you should be able to do it without giving up Profar, Perez, or Olt.

and while I’m still upset that the Rangers didn’t match the Halos offer for BGL, I’m not surprised. I knew the Rangers didn’t like him as much as some of us do, it just sucks that he ended up with the Halos.

As far as Pujols goes, good luck with that Anaheim. I think he’s going to perform and age similar to A-Rod. That’s a horrible contract that they will regret in 3 or 4 years. Of course, that doesn’t help me feel a lot better right now, but it’s what I’m going with.

He's the reason I knew who you were even though I wasn't around.

I only started on this site back in January of this year… not even a full year.

But I spent two months on NMLR before coming here… and hence know who wufdog actually is. And Kaiser Soze… from stories I hear nothing has changed.

I’m a programmer and re-wrote ab03’s “Troll Script” which you had some comments in. When I linked back to his old post ab03 commented that “I think I know who LoneStarBallUser is.” Probably remembering an old argument.

That piqued my curiosity and I searched google for that username on this site and found that post talking about some of your various aliases and remembered “Brooks Was Here”.

This was all months ago but it was the first thing I thought when you popped up as “SoWasRed”. Seemed an interesting coincidence.

and filled with nothing but conjecture. We have no idea what wore him down this year. He’s not exactly a guy that lofes it out in the field.

Like a lot of things at LSB, I think being worried about Josh’s extension has built upon itself. It’s gotten to the point where a perfectly reasonable point has become a monstrosity of idiocy where 3 assumptions have to be met before we even get into these doomsday scenarios.

by FirebatM3 on Dec 8, 2011 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, he has old player skills

Though a .282 average is not poor.

But when did that become leprosy? Falling off at a greater than typical rate does not equate to worthless the day he turns 30 or incapable of being worth a large contract at 27 years old.

And you say the exception as if he’d literally be the one exception to make it into his mid 30s. Thome is kicking around as a productive hitter at 41, Ortiz has fallen off but remained valuable through 35. Does Konerko count?

I wouldn’t want to give him 8 years or anything, but the guy can reasonably be projected to be a cornerstone offensive player for the next 5-6 years and you act like its unfathomable to be interested in giving him a decent contract. His defense/baserunning will stop him from being a truly elite player, but his WAR value should still be similar to his ~4.5 average of the past 5 years for the next 5.

Then you get to factors that apply to the Rangers.

-1b is one of (the?) their weakest organizational positions.
- They are in a contention window that isn’t entirely sure to last. Granted trying up a bad contract could work negatively, but what we know for sure is that 2012 will have a good Ranger team that Prince Fielder would be a great addition to.
- They are in the AL so they have the DH safety net for the final year(s) of a contract if its needed due to his defense becoming unbearable or simply having a 1b rise up you want to play.
- Some of their core offensive talent is set to leave in the next 1-2 years, so if the Rangers want to let them go due to age/injury reasons Fielder is a good replacement for that offense that can be secured now and could be tough to find otherwise with a poor offensive FA crop next year.
- They really don’t have that much money tied up in the long term right now, with a smart front office and TV money kicking in by the time he could go bad its unlikely it would be an albatross even if it is a poor contract.

There are reasons to be apprehensive, I’m not saying the Rangers should go all out for him… but I don’t see how it is some illogical doomed to failure awful move that the Rangers shouldn’t be looking into because he has “old player skills”.

by DShep on Dec 8, 2011 5:39 PM CST up reply actions

It's a bad deal because to get him

you need to invest that 7th and, most likely, 8th year. Nevermind the fact taht Thome, Konerko, and Ortiz all had pretty mediocre years in their early and mid 30s. The problem with Old player skills guys is that you really can’t predict how sharp that decline will be.

Signing Fielder introduces a pretty big risk into the talent pool and probably jeopardizes our ability to retain the necessary parts of that offensive core who will be FAs in the next 1-2 years. He’s not a move made in a vaccuum, if you give him that money, someone else will not get it. Given that, why on earth doe it make sense to gamble so much money and so much flexibility over so many years over a guy whose offensive production might be a 4 WAR dude for the next 3-5 years?

Fielder is the wrong type of player for the wrong price for the wrong time. You can fix that 1B hole without going nuts for a guy like that. I think the only difference between us is that you’re much more willing to gamble and pray on a guy like Prince than I am.

his injuries aren’t really equatable to those of Reyes and Hamilton. I don’t disagree he is getting older, but he plays every day in the field. That is something you know you aren’t going to be able to get from Reyes and Hamilton.

Because as A-Rod has shown us

it’s the accumulated injuries that matters, not the time missed. Unless you think Albert Pujols heals faster than the average athlete or you think he has super steroids, the injury history is important, not the games missed.

He played hurt for the Cardinals. Fantastic. But the fact that he missed games and had injuries doesn’t make him broken. Just like the fact that Josh Hamilton is injury prone doesn’t make him broken or mean that he gets hurt running bases or the 100s of other stupid things you said over your time at LSB true.

There’s no pic of him in sweat pants…but if you looked at him he totally looks like someone who just sits around in his sweats wiping his ass with Benjaminz. Dude was so disheveled during the playoffs and I could see him having nacho cheese stains on his wind suit jacket.

Couple of things

1) I think there are legitimate questions about how well CJ holds out. Chief among them, the fact that he managed to strikeout more people and walk less while not throwing more pitches for strikes last year. That said, this was a very reasonable deal for him.

2) I think everyone is overstating how bad of a deal the Pujols thing was. I think there’s a good chance that Albert outproduces Prince Fielder every year of their respective contracts, despite the 4 year difference in age. I hope he falls off a cliff, of course, but I think it can work out well for the Angels in year 1-4.

3) Signing Prince Fielder to a huge contract is still stupid. THe only difference now is that it’ll be a reflexive type of stupid. You don’t respond to a risky contract with an even riskier one. You do it by acquiring talent in other ways.

As expected, with the Angels getting some money off the books after the 2012 season, C.J. Wilson’s 5-year, $77.5 million deal is backloaded to help the payroll. A look at the numbers: 2012: $10 million, plus a $2.5 million signing bonus 2013: $11 million 2014: $16 million 2015: $18 million 2016: $20 million The final three years of the deal are the same as Jered Weaver’s, meaning the Angels are going to be paying two of their pitchers a lot of money near the end of deals.

Perspective

While it hurts to see CJ go to the Angels, they also committed over $250 million today to a maybe 32-year-old Pujols, all to make up for the fact JD ass-raped them on Napoli last year.

And we still have plenty of trade ammo, a ninja in the front office, Nolan and the Brothers Maddux to get the best out of our pitchers, and three-plus months to acquire talent prior to Opening Day. It’s gonna be OK, everybody.

"Those cocksuckers asking me if I thought we were gonna go up there and try to work his fuckin’ pitch count ‘cause he’s on three fuckin’ days rest…you know what I told those cocksuckers? He pitch ball, ball cross plate, we gonna knock the shit out of it."

But the shock and awe of the Pujols announcement was a punch in the mouth and the confirmation of CJ was the full kick to the testicles. You’re naturally going to smart for the rest of the day at least.

As much as I want to be on the Holland wagon...

I hate crowding; I’m placing my bet now on Matty Harrison; not only did he learn to read, and thus improve as a pitcher…but he was pretty pissed about being left off the roster for last year’s World Series. Combine that with being pulled (too early, in my opinion) in Game 3, I bet he takes another big step forward next year. Striking out hitters (or finishing them off, period) will do wonders for him.

(Disclaimer: I’d take a 5 to 1 bet for Holland and a 50 to 1 bet for Harrison)

Within the next 3-4 years we will have Marteen, Neil, up in the majors making progress. Why waste resources on CJ when you’re not paying for a #1, which would be the only upgrade above the projected potential of Holland, Martin, Ramirez, Feliz. I’m not advocating that those pitchers are sure bets. However, I’d bet on those guys being heavy contributors to our team.

It just just pisses me off even more. But I really think now that this was about CJ wanting to go home and short of Texas just money whipping the hell out of the offer it was not going to happen. He left a shitload of money on the table in MIA and us just matching LA’s offer was not going to do. So we move on and hope like hell JD knows what he’s doing.

It wasn't all about him going home

He said the Rangers showed little interest in keeping him, and that if they had made a better offer it would have been a much tougher decision for him to leave. There was more than a decent chance he’d still be here if the Rangers were willing to commit. Obviously they were not, so the question is why not. We don’t know. Maybe they’re saving it for someone else. Maybe they are that committed to not signing pitchers in their 30s to big deals. But it could very well be because the team doesn’t have the cash right now a lot of us assumed they had. We’ll find out in due course.

The Rangers Are The Cartridge Format Right Now

Remember when Nintendo released the N64 back in ‘96, insisting that the cartridge was still not only a viable format, but the standard for the gaming industry? They chose to assume that the ingredients that had lent themselves to the company’s previous successes were enough to carry the day for them against Sony’s forward thinking effort and tangible attempts to become the leader in the business. Nintendo, as we all know, lost their ass on that gamble, and didn’t get it back until ten years later.

The Rangers, evidently comfortable in their seat as the defending representatives of the West, are making a similar mistake here, I feel. The vibe all of us are getting, and seem to be gradually (and begrudgingly) accepting, is that the pieces they have now are, and will continue to be enough to win it all. I can’t help but think that the complacency will hurt them in the long run. Perhaps Prince Fielder or Yu aren’t as convenient as the FO would like, much like Nintendo opting not to switch from cartridge to CD, but to stand pat as the rest of the West re-ups and reloads won’t bring the type of success I feel like the Rangers assume they have in the bag (or perhaps had assumed until this morning)

You don’t want to be that one kid on the block that’s holding onto some busted ass Mitch Moreland while the rest of the neighborhood kids are cruising around with their fancy, bad ass, non gratuitously inconvenient World Series error committing 1st Basemen.

Moreno is pissed. This is scary.
Moreno, who watched the Angels fall short in recent years trying to lure free agents Carl Crawford, Mark Teixeira, Adrian Beltre and CC Sabathia, took the reins. He made two impassioned calls to Pujols. He told Pujols that they planned to also sign Wilson. They weren’t going to stop being aggressive in the market until they won a World Series championship, their first since 2002 and first under Moreno.

Haven't been on all day (Sorry for the long post btw)

From out of left field the Angels just trumped our asses. Guess they knew what they were doing when they refused to make moves at the deadline. Kudos to them, and smart moves by FO, gotta give cred where cred is due.

Speaking of which, its time for some accountability. And unfortunately I warned of this last year. Nolan Ryan’s influence and power on this team is too much. Don’t get me wrong, I love the culture change in regards to pitching; requiring pitchers to pitch deep into games, mental toughness, battling through trough situations. I’ll give cred to Nolan and Maddux for that.

However, Nolan Ryan needs to step down as President of Operations, and let JD take that role. Nolan needs to stay on as part owner/consultant and leave it as that. Here is why…

I personally know the man (well used too). He’s a baseball legend, a Texas legend we all adorned him and his game our entire lives. But Nolan the baseball player is not the same as Nolan the man/exec. He is the most hard headed stubborn @$$hole i’ve ever met. As much as Ricky in Ft. Worth pisses you off… dont be surprised if that’s really Nolan Ryan posting. Seriously… a-hole. He has a complex of perpetual his way, no highway option when it comes to pitching decisions for the team, and its progressively going to kill this team.

Ryan does not belive in signing long term deals for pitchers. Bottom line. He has perpettually stated that he never signed a contract more than 3 years, and most of his colleagues didn’t either. That’s the equivelant of when youre a kid and you ask your parents for something and they say no, just because “I didnt have that when i was your age” or “thats not the way it went when i was your age”. BS like that is ridiculous. Its time to be progressive, keep up with the times and be realistic. Being stubborn to YOUR ideals won’t get us another ALCS much less win the WEST now.

As long as Nolan is prez i guarantee you will not see a pitcher with a deal over 5 years… and that will be our ACE. He’s adamant about it. That’s why Greenburg is gone. Greenburg insisted on the 6th year for Lee, Nolan never wanted it. Now here we are and we lose CJ to the MF Angels bc he wouldnt add 1 more year. 5 years for CJ is not a bad deal. No, he’s not an ACE, but he’s dependable, and he’s worth the extra year we didnt offer for one major reason: He has admitted to liking pitching in the Texas heat. Who the f*** ever says that?

Nolan is dropping the ball here. We are AL Champs, and I think his decisioning is overrriding JDs talent and ability to pick up quality players to not just be AL Champs but World Series Champs.

God only hopes we counter with Yu and Fielder. Look Nolan F*** payroll. I dont spend my hard earned money multiple multiple times a year for you to not sign the best available players you can. Or to retain the best players we currently have. Get your head out of your @$$. You sign Fielder, you sign Darvish, make a trade for another big name. You’ll more than make up for it in ticket sales merchendise and revenue. Sign Darvish, and i’m buying a jersey asap. its as simple as that. Quit being a frugal, stubborn old man, nut up, and lets sign some MF killers out there.

I’m pissed and ranting, but it needed to be said. Like it or not, Nolan’s philosophy regarding talent acquisition is lacking. JD is getting it done in Latin America, scouting in Japan, and i know he’s put his word in here… if the best we get is Nathan and Garza this offseason now that LAA has CJ and Pujols, I’m kicking Nolan straight up in the balls next time i see him.

I like Steak.

But we’re also probably not going to wind up capitalizing on our final year with what was the best team in Rangers history last year.

Bleah.

Says who?

No one is guaranteed a WS trophy. I’m pissed today but geez, you make it sound like we’re screwed for life. The team is pretty damn good as it is, the farm system is in the best shape it’s ever been in, we have the best front office in team history, it’s not like we’ll never make a move again. The Angels have spent so much goddam money the past few years – if they don’t produce trophies it will hurt them a hell of a lot more than us. Yeah, the Angels are better but they’re not gonna beat us by 10 games in the division, if at all. Much rather be in our position than being forced to pay out the fucking nose just to give us a chance to approach the win level of the best team in the division.

Overall, you're right.

I just don’t really give a shit about overall right now.

I’d really rather not sit and wait for several years to be the best team in the division right now. We don’t have to coast. We still have a chance to be a ball-crushingly awesome team ourselves next year, and unlike the Angels we don’t have to completely mortgage the future to do it.

Considering the alternative might be extending Josh Hamilton, I don’t see any reason not to make a strong run at Fielder, make him Hamilton’s replacement and put ourselves back in front next year at the same time.

haha

Yeah, it’s ok to be pissed. Don’t mean to give you the impression I’m jumping down your throat.

Nah, you didn't.

Endy is a free agent.

We do not currently have Endy.

After thinking about it for a while

The Angels had a hell of a day. They got the best player in baseball and the best pitcher on the market. Big market=Big Money. Our front office didn’t believe in Ceej, so it is what it is. Have fun being back home C.J. and thanks for the memories.

What’s in store for the rest of the postseason? I have no idea. I don’t expect anything big, probably extensions for some of the “core”. It hasn’t been a sexy offseason, and though I still hope for a big move, I can be content without one.

The Angels spent money this offseason. You know who else has spent money? The Yankees. Remember the last time they met us in the playoffs? They got dealt with. Tigers had a big spending offeseason last year…How’d that work out in the ALCS? This team and front office will remain driven, I have no doubt about it. Lessgo Rangers

So, how about the Marlins putting all that cash on the table for Pujols, but withholding the no-trade clause.

Seems strange to me, given how badly they wanted him.

Emily Jones: Adrian Beltre's pretty good?
Mike Napoli: Wow. How about that guy.

Weirdest thing ever, imo

All they had to do was trade every other player on the team, and Pujols would have waived his NTC

C.J. posted this on facebook early this morning
I just want to say thank you to all the ranger fans who have supported me, and my efforts in the community the last six years in Texas. Surely it’s both hard for some to understand that I left for a different team let alone a division rival- it was bittersweet for me as well. At the end of the day the rangers didn’t make a push to keep me on the team. The angels an marlins wanted me on their teams and proved it. everything written about an asking price etc was media speculation and never had an ounce of truth. The rangers are a great organization with talented front office and players and will be a difficult team to beat and it’s very sad to leave such awesome teammates and fans. The last few years in ranger stadium were special- going from a losing team to bankrupt to american league champs was a complete transformation and obviously everyone should be proud of it. The charity will continue even stronger now and we will continue to support North Texas kids as well as SoCal kids. Please keep that spirit of philanthropy alive for your local causes like cooks children’s hospital, Scottish rite, dallas children’s and the boys and girls club.

You can hear me now or listen to me later....

CJ= Barry Zito…glad we let him go…we will light him up in head to head…
PooHoles contract= A-Rod contract. Might have an MVP year or even 2 but the contract will hamstring LAA for the next decade without a doubt…Ranger scored 200 more runs than LAA last year…one guy cannot make up for that by himself…Rangers time to strut farm stuff…
