Just curious

where do you guys mostly get your footballing news/match reports/comment?

I pretty much stick entirely to trusting what the Guardian and the BBC reports in regards to actual news, but I try to avoid any analysis and keep that mostly to blogs.

AC Milan - Tottenham

Eagerly anticipated and now here it is. AC Milan are still woefully banged up but at least Nesta is back. They played Oddo and Antonini as the fullbacks last weekend and that is scary as hell going into today. But they have nothing else since Abate is hurt and Urby Emmanuelson is more offensive than defensive and Didac Vila isn’t up to speed, I guess. Don;‘t know why we haven’t seen Didac yet.

it will be interesting to see Ibra-Pato/Cassano-Robinho/Cassano go up against the Totts back line, though. I don’t think Dawson can keep up with Ibra in terms of one-on-ones nor can he deal with him aerially, so we shall see how that goes.

I’m DVRing the game and won’t get to watch until this evening so I’ll be avoiding this as well as all other footy sites until then. Enjoy, fella’s!

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

So the English commentators in this Milan-Spurs match for me are hilariously biased.

Got what they deserve.

Gattuso’s literally a mong.

by LiamP on Feb 15, 2011 3:42 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Damn

Looks like I turned it off too soon.

Wowzers. AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has gone mad. The Italian greets the final whistle by marching straight over to assistant Tottenham coach Joe Jordan and head-butting him. Incredible. The two benches clash as a result as Gattuso is pulled away, but still he tries to get at the Tottenham bench. Absolutely staggering from the veteran midfielder. What’s the Italian for bad loser?

Milan

I’m very surprised that neither Flamini nor Gattuso got sent off. I can’t remember the last time I saw a player who seemed as bent on getting a red card as Gattuso was yesterday.

Agreed

The ref was horrible, though. Even though the brit commentator LOVED him and thought he did smashing. But he missed the penalty shout in the opening minute, the Ibra chop down soon after right outside the box, several leading with elbows by Dawson, Gattuso and Flamini should have been off and various other infractions that he missed.

But yeah Gattuso’s always dancing that fine line of being fiery but not losing control, but yesterday he was awful. While I laughed at him pushing the Totts Asst Coach, he should’ve been off right then and there for it.

As for the game itself, Lennon tore that back line open and the Milan way of dribbling the ball into the goalie’s box before shooting was never going to work. Sure wish we could’ve seen Cassano in there instead of Pato if that was the way they wanted to play.

Milan can still get the goals on the road to progress, but it’ll be a hard task.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Feb 16, 2011 10:18 AM CST up reply actions

Watching the first half so far, Antonini's been as shit as expected against Lennon.

Abate’s been given a reprieve as Pienaar’s not really a threatening wide player.

Just got done watching.

Maurice’s right: Wilshere played an absolute blinder. He made Fabregas (who was wasteful) look like the 18 year old playing in his first knockout game in the CL.

The 2nd leg will be fascinating, because most teams would try to park the bus and sneak an away goal on the counter, but Arsene doesn’t know how to play that way and he doesn’t have the players to be able to park the bus against Barca. I imagine we’ll see some breathtakingly free-flowing football.

Given how well Wilshere did

against Xavi (I still have 25 minutes to watch), if Diaby can get a couple of games in I wonder if he wouldn’t be a better third guy in midfield for these guys? They might make him look a little foolish, but he’s kind of an unsettling guy and we’re going to need to score goals to have a chance.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 16, 2011 7:25 PM CST up reply actions

Diaby

I guess he’ll play in the next leg. I feel like he’s a bit more hot-headed and likely to get a red card than Song. Not that he’s a bad player at all. He’ll have his hands full, for sure.

You gotta have somebody in that role, especially when playing Barcelona. He didn’t get sent off, which was obviously key since he played most of the game with a yellow. I thought he had himself a very strong match.

by trza on Feb 17, 2011 9:54 AM CST up reply actions

Come on

you really think they’re going to keep their top three CBs healthy all at the same time?

Even though Djourou is the better pairing for Vermaelen and I’d probably go with him, I think that Wenger sees Koscielny as his #2 guy at that position, especially as his play has improved over the past month or so. Might also depend on the matchup. Against this short Barcalona group, I don’t know that you need 6-3 guys as much as you need smart players who can move the ball and play positionally (I don’t know that I’m describing any of them there, though).

Wenger also said that there was no chance that Vermaelen would be back in time for the second leg of this matchup, unfortunately, so that last part is moot.

Agree 100%

Koscielny was an absolute monster at the back. I don’t know how he was able to play Messi so tight without ever getting beat. He was all of the damn place back there. Fantastic match for him.

And Wilshere, where to start? He looked like he had been playing massive Champions League matches for years. Just fantastic. His one-touch to Fabregas to get the break going on the second goal was a thing of beauty.

Khedira's very good.

Real have no need for him at all, but neither do Barca. Regardless, it’s a moot point given his descent.

by LiamP on Feb 17, 2011 12:23 AM CST up reply actions

Well, if they feel like adding another creative passer for the heck of it.

I like Khedira, but he’s more a physical box-to-box player.

But yeah, it seems like the only reason for Cesc to go to either is for depth. There seems no need for him to replace Busquets (scum, but quite possibly the best DMF in the world now and perfect for them in terms of his distribution)…and you wouldn’t want to break up Xavi/Iniesta/Pedro/Villa/Messi. Plus they still have Mascherano and a bunch of kids, as well as Ibrahim Afellay, who I wish would play more. He’s awesome.

And then Real has Alonso, the Diarras, Khedira, Gago, Ozil all as guys who play the middle.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

by jonthefon on Feb 17, 2011 1:21 AM CST up reply actions

If they added him, I don't think it would be to replace Busquets. As you said, Busqets is a fine holding midfielder and that's not what Cesc is by any means.

I assume they’d groom him as a Xavi successor and have him play with Busquets and Xavi and either sell Iniesta or move him up to where Pedro’s currently playing. Given Pedro’s development though, I don’t understand why they’d do that. Really, it’s not a logical move for Barca at all, but it seems inevitable anyway.

I have no clue why Afellay went there, as he’s stuck behind the most intransigent front 3 in football. Barring injuries, he’ll never get significant playing time.

by LiamP on Feb 17, 2011 1:44 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, it just seems stupid for him

to move to Barca for 30 mil (or whatever they pay him) and mostly work as a sub, because right now he’s probably not noticeably better than Iniesta, and Xavi is still only 30, and he hardly profiles as the sort of wing forward that Pedro is. And it feels like those guys play every game, league or cup or whatever.

Well, whatever, I don’t know how Cesc thinks.

Gosh dang I wish Afellay hadn’t gone there. He’s going to become the new Hleb! Well not really, but even if he went to, say, Germany, it would’ve been fun.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

read a thing a couple of days ago that basically said

cesc will end up in barca…in a couple of years, as xavi’s “replacement” — this makes a lot of sense. it allows for barca to not spend a shitton on a sub, it allows his value to increase for arsenal, it allows barca to look like they are going after cesc hard (without spending the money) int heir current financial situation, etc

so in say 2ish yrs…then i expect him to go to barca due to a “godfather type” offer…

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

That makes the most sense to me

I sure wish Barca’s players would shut the f up about it in the mean time. They make it a lot harder to be at peace with the whole thing, and it’s not like anyone is unaware of their feelings.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 19, 2011 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

It might be in Arsenal's best interest to let him go at that point.

Selling Fabregas in his mid 20’s would ensure maximum value (not that Arsene would reinvest anyway) and by then, his importance might be mitigated by the development of Wilshere and Ramsey (unless he pulls an Eduardo and returns as a shell of his former self).

What’s scary about Arsenal’s midfield is that, in two years, Fabregas will be 25, Song will be 25, Wilshere will be 21 and Ramsey will be 22.

by LiamP on Feb 19, 2011 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

I have no idea where it really went to, nor do I want to take the time to read up on it.

All I know is that Arsenal obviously don’t have the same problems as United, and the only thing preventing them from potentially reinvesting the Fabregas money is the crazy Frenchman in charge of the operation.

Other than Lyon, I can’t think of a team I’d rather see win this year. Only two Eastern European clubs (Steaua and Red Star Belgrade) have ever won the Champions League- it would be cool to see a third, just to break up the monotony of the usual Spanish, Italian, or English champs.

I'm curious about that too

Gourcuff is a solid player, but they didn’t really need him, and he’s been fairly mediocre this season.

They’ve made a couple other questionable purchases the last few seasons- Delgado does nothing for me, and Gomis, despite the goal today, has looked very poor every time I’ve seen him.

I just hope they can hold on to Lloris- he has the talent to start for one of the top sides in Spain or England, and they’re very lucky to have a keeper of his caliber.

Feels like Aulas wanting to play his big summer signing regardless of his form.

by LiamP on Feb 23, 2011 12:57 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

True

From what I’ve read of the club, Aulas and Bernard Lacombe pretty much run things- they’re set up a lot like the Oakland A’s, in that they give the manager as little authority as possible.

I’ve tried to emulate that a bit on my Lyon FM save- any time I’m considering signing a player, I run it by Lacombe. If he tells me the player may struggle to adapt, or has a personality that could clash with the current squad, I don’t sign them, no matter how good they are. It makes finding the right player a pain at times, but it’s been worth it in terms of having a very gelled squad.

This time it's not my fault\, because Cesc would've gotten injured against Barca.

Cesc out for the final

You need to ask for his injury more often. It’s a really cool thing to do.

you guys really shouldn’t be expecting to win the title.

looks like he’s going to be out a while.

Whatever.

Neither injury is particularly serious and you’re a point behind (granted with one more game played) with a favorable schedule.

Poor Barca
“We told the Arsenal directors that we knew they were after Toral and we told them we didn’t like it – as any president would have said,” Rosell told Catalan television. "Legally they have done nothing wrong but it’s a little immoral.

“For us it’s very important to keep this group of kids who have grown up together in La Masia. We don’t like it that clubs come in with offers of money just before they turn 16.

“There are two philosophies – ours is to invest in La Masia and the other is to fish all over Europe for kids of 15 like Arsenal.”

Barca

So I guess they’re saying it’s OK to poach their academy kids once they turn 16? Because that’s what Liverpool did with Dani Pacheco, and I don’t remember hearing Barca bitch about that.

Two of the most promising youth players in United's system were poached

Paul Pogba was taken from Le Havre (France) and Davide Petrucci was taken from Roma. It’s a nice competitive advantage for English clubs.

Great slate of games on TV this weekend

ManU-Wigan which could always turn out to be a 7-0 drubbing for ManU. Nobody blows GD out of the water like Wigan.

Then it’s Blackburn-Villa for the 5th time this season, on a tape delay.

Rovers-Villa is followed directly by Dortmund-Bayern Munich which should be great to watch. Dortmund has a huge lead on 2nd place already, but still should be entertaining.

Monday is 1st place AC Milan vs 2nd place Napoli. Napoli is fun to watch and if they win, they’ll be tied for first in Serie A. My DVR’s gonna be working over time this weekend.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Feb 26, 2011 9:18 AM CST reply actions

I ommitted that for a reason

But I guess silverware is silverware and for the Brummies this is a big game.

by HypoLuxa on Feb 26, 2011 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

Dortmund are ridiculous.

They’re up 3-1 against Bayern right now while playing beautiful football. The average age of their XI today was 22.8.

If they can hold on to guys like Gotze/Sahin/Hummels/Subotic, they could really make some noise in the CL next year.

by LiamP on Feb 26, 2011 1:08 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Bayern

was guaranteed to win by at least two, so they only need five or more goals.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 26, 2011 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

Keeping them is key

I can’t see that happening, though. Sahin and Subotic will will be first out followed by Gotze and Bender or Grosskreutz. There is just way too much talent for a Bundesliga side not named Bayern to keep hold of. I’m lapping up every second of this season because I know that next year someone will be gone.

Also, I really think the Schmelzer (and his ridiculous hairband/tie)-Grosskreutz duo on the left side is an underrated force on that team. Even though Grosskreutz looks almost as Sloth as Kuyt, he gets the job done.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

I'd like to see at least one CL run with that core intact though.

DFL Pokal

And were bounced out of the domestic cup by a third Div side. They have work to do, but if they can get the league out of the way they can perhaps put together a solid run.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Feb 27, 2011 12:58 AM CST up reply actions

For anyone who sat down and watched all 90 minutes of Rovers-Villa

I would like to apologize for such an awful display of football. As soon as I saw the team sheet of Vince Grella – Jermaine Jones – Keith Andrews as the midfield, I should have turned off the TV and just waited for the score to come across. Any team fielding that threesome is destined to lose and lose big.

The tide is quickly turning on Keano and his tactical and player evaluation skills, or lack thereof. Today’s line-up was not very encouraging…

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

Mark Hughes
“I don’t think I have anything to prove, to be perfectly honest, because I think everybody there understood that I was taking the club in the right direction, the direction it need to be.’’

He can’t really believe this, can he?

“In terms being in charge of a big club, I know I can do the job because I have experienced it,‘’ said Hughes, who is among the favourites to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and was also recently linked with Chelsea amid speculation over Carlo Ancelotti’s future.

That would be awesome, Man Utd in particular since they’d probably be more likely to give him a longer run.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 26, 2011 12:44 PM CST reply actions
