MLB.tv - Worth it?
I know this question has been asked tons of times, but this is the first time it's ever been relevant to my needs, as I've always been in DFW thus ineligible. Having moved to SF a few weeks ago, life has had its ups and downs as a die-hard Ranger fan. It sucks seeing World Series champs stuff everywhere I go and think back to what could have been (I was fortunate enough to have attended all the playoff games at RBiA - best night of my life might be game 6 ALCS). Most Giants fans are cool when they see me wearing Ranger gear, but my new office mates are pissing me off.
Had my travel mug stolen out of the office kitchen (bought from my cousin's school fundraiser), so I brought in some backup plastic beer cups I bought from playoff games, and now one of those has gone missing as well. Starting to get pissed as no one will admit to the thievery. Can take a joke but not my shit being stolen, especially by supposed Giants fans... as any real Giants fan knows what misery is like.
Anway, on to MLB.tv. I'm almost certain to buy it for the first time, and was wondering how much people like it. Do you use it on your smartphone too? Is the Premium worth an extra $20? I'm especially excited that it includes some spring training action. Will make being stuck in the office on the west coast tolerable.

MLB.tv seriously one of the best purchases I've ever made...
You’ll notice a bit of a bumpy ride the first week or so of the season as they usually roll out a new version and there’s some kinks to work out. But afterward, it’s smooth sailing to nightly Rangers bliss.
Where did you end up staying? In the city? How are you liking the Bay Area?

Yeah, I can't see really see myself NOT buying it at this point.
I hope I can watch a ton of spring training games on there.
Especially since I didn’t bring my PS3 out here and don’t plan on buying a TV. I ended up finding a residential inn near Washington Square (10min walk to my work) the day before I arrived in SF and planned on staying here a week. They were charging me $170/week, but now they’re charging me $150/week since i’ve been here for at least 3 weeks.
Looking at finding a place to move into month-to-month with roommates (preferred locations of North Beach, Mission, or Potrero Hill), but I have to admit I’m kind of getting used to my current location, and you can’t beat the price! It’s incredibly basic— just a room with bed, nightstand, wooden chair, dresser, and sink (kitchen, bathroom, and shower are shared among everyone on the floor- 10 rooms). I plan on staying here until I find awesome roommates or a great deal somewhere.
Like SF so far though. Most of the people out here have been cool. Tried to order takeout tacos from a place called “Don Pistos” the other night and asked what the best kind of tacos were… the chef told me if it was my first time I needed to come in instead of takeout.. so I walked over and he comped my entire meal including a quart of beer. Tacos were awesome too… Really digging the hospitality so far (outside some scumbag office worker who’s stealing my Ranger cups – I’m down to one now!)
North Beach, Mission, or Potrero Hill
Those are three completely different neighborhoods, as I’m sure you’re finding out. Portrero Hill is going to be the cheapest for rent, but its location leaves you far from most of the cool nightlife (almost walking distance to AT&T however). North Beach is the most expensive, and you’re into hitting bars and restaurants, can’t be beat. I used to work in North Beach, and you really can’t beat it. The Mission is hipster heaven these days, and rents are climbing accordingly. Still, the Mission generally has nice weather, and if you have a car will offer semi-legitimate parking opportunities, which is as good as you can ask for in the City.
I’m hoping the CA-based LSB crew can meet up in Bulirngame, or wherever. Anyway, welcome to The Golden State.

Premium is worth it if you want access to the archived games
I bought it with the intention of going back to catch things I missed, but I didn’t use it as much as I thought I would

MLB.tv is a great purchase
if you’re a die-hard and live outside DFW. I’ve been using it since it’s inception, so I’m in the camp that recommends it. Premium is worth it, especially since it’s only $20 more and offers more features to have fun with.
by DevilManHammy on Feb 17, 2011 8:06 AM CST reply actions
One more thing
Also, premium is worth it (IMHO) because it offers the choice of home and away broadcasts.
I just wish
MLB wanted my money enough where I didn’t have blackouts.

That's the only complaint I have...
especially when you have examples like Rockies or D’Backs games blacked out in Utah.
Just stupid.

Yup
I would have found mlb.tv much more useful if i could watch ranger games on the go via my phone or laptop, but being in the dfw area they dont think i should be able to do that.

I've heard there is a jailbreak app called "fake location" for the iPhone/pad/touch.
Not that I would know anything about that…
I'm sure you are on some kind of list now.
Sorry.

As an alternative opinion...
You might also try the radio package that they offer. I’ve gotten it the last two years and really enjoy being able to listen to the broadcasts at my desk at work. It’s a cheaper alternative, but it may come included in the TV package.
Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger. - J.R.R. Tolkien
I've had the radio package for years and the MLB Extrainnings at home
Can’t really watch tv on the computer at work but the radio package together with gameday works just fine. One thing to keep in mind is there will probably a free preview of the MLB radio during ST and the first week or so of the season (at least they did last year and I think the year before).
Hobson, did you see that?
Yes.
She stole that tie! It's the perfect crime. Girls don't wear ties; although some do. It's not a perfect crime, but it's a good crime.
Yes. If she murdered the tie it would be the perfect crime.
For about the same price, you can order MLB Extra Innings
If it’s available to you.
If MLB.tv is your only choice, it’s fantastic.
Yes it is completely worthless
I spent half of the 2009 season in Salt Lake City and enjoyed watching most of the games on MLB tv that season. This season I will be in Livermore so I’ve already purchased it again – I might as well use it for the whole season. The best part about it is I have an iphone with an unlimited data plan so when I go to CA I will be able to watch the games on my phone if I’m out or about or I can listen to them on the radio while I go out for my jog. It is completely worth the money spent.
Also, I paid a little extra to get the home broadcasts for each game – it reminds me of being at home, but I can choose to listen to the other broadcast if I want and I also enjoy putting on the KRLD overlay during the game to listen to it as well.

What I like about it
First, let me say that I have shitty Dishtv, which doesn’t offer extra innings. Even if it did, though, I doubt I’d choose EI over MLBtv.
The good: you never miss a game. It’s easy to forget to set your DVR, or have a higher priority recording preempt it. Also, if you see news about an incredible pitching performance by some other team, you have that game recorded, too. I also really love the fact that I can watch it on my TV through my ps3. Another bonus: I occassionally like to change it to the opposing team’s announcer’s feed after a colossal meltdown by their side. That can be pretty amusing.
The not so good: if the game goes to extra innings, you miss out (solution – tape the Rangers postgame), Also, you can’t pause it during the middle of an inning. And I don’t know if this a ps3 thing only or not, but occasionally the games wouldn’t load. Last year was their 1st yr on ps3, so you’d think that issue would be less of a problem this go round.

On the massive meltdown…thats the best part of having 2 different feeds.

My favorite part is that if you have a PS3, you can use it to watch the MLB.TV games in HD on your TV... Great picture quality...
But you have to have at least like a 200kb connection rate for downloads…
But if you have access to MLB Extra Innings, might want to consider that too…
But, then again, if you have a PS3 that essentially is MLB Extra Innings, and plus you will be able to watch games while away from home.

I've been using mlb.tv to rewatch the playoff games
though with the start of spring training they might have taken those down.
Combine it with the At Bat app on my ipod touch and I’m covered as an out-of-market fan. I should do commercials.
Not worth it
too many stream sites, and, depending on your connection, there mostly good streams. So unless you have money to waste, I wouldn’t do it.

One thing to keep in mind
The Bay Area is A’s/giants territory, so when the Rangers play the A’s, the game will be blacked out on mlb.tv. You’re expected to watch it on the local A’s TV broadccast, but anyone who’s ever spent any time at Athletics Nation knows that not every game is shown on TV. I run into a sort-of similar problem in San Luis Obispo (Angels/Dodgers territory)… I’m far enough north that KCAL isn’t considered my local station so Dish and DirecTv don’t carry it in my area, but thanks to blackout rules, I can’t stream it when the Rangers play the Angels, so if it’s on KCAL instead of Fox Sports West, I’m out of luck.
Note that archived games are not blacked out (just when they’re live), and gameday audio (included with your mlb.tv subscription) also is never blacked out. I actually used gameday audio a lot more than mlb.tv last year because I could listen at work.
