EPL - Transfer deadline fallout.
Chelsea vs. Liverpool is obviously the most intriguing match this weekend, with a Liverpool win/draw probably knocking Chelsea out of the title race. Rec this up.

In other news...
Anderlecht claims that they rejected a 25.5mm GBP bid for Lukaku by Chelsea at the deadline. The scary thing is, I don’t think he and Torres were mutually exclusive.
Graham thinks he's sold this summer
and that Chelsea will be heavily involved. I don’t know much about the guy, but it seems that Chelsea has a…better than fair…chance. From a year ago when in London:
I’m very pleased to be here – unfortunately, I didn’t meet Drogba. If ever one day I will cry, it will be when I sign for Chelsea.

Lukaku will end up at Chelsea
I think that’s been almost a certainty for a while now. I’m personally rather surprised that Anderlecht has been able to hang onto him for this long.
He doesn't want to leave untilt the summer.

Dortmund-Schalke
On Gol TV today for those who have it. This is Dortmund’s derby (the Ruhr Derby to be exact) so it should be extra tasty.
That plus earlier this year the roof of Schalke’s stadium collapsed under some snow (like the Metrodome) and when the crew was contracted to clean it up were done, there was a Dortmund flag on the roof. I know this sounds minor, but just imagine some fan leaving a Liverpool flag on the roof at Goodison. It’s the makings of a nice Friday afternoon derby.

This is pretty dumb
John W Henry has explained Liverpool’s decision to spend a British record transfer fee on Andy Carroll, revealing he strictly stipulated that the Reds pay £15 million less than they received for Fernando Torres.
“The fee for Torres was dependent on what Newcastle asked for Carroll,’’ Henry told the Guardian, explaining they simply wanted a difference of £15million.

I can't speak for FIFA
But I’ve learned a ton about real football from playing Football Manager. I’ve been managing Lyon, and after a few seasons, I’m fairly familiar now with most of the clubs and players in Ligue 1. Not to mention that Africa is a major talent source for the French league, so it’s helped me learn about that continent as well.

A bit of a different take on the Torres transfer.
from Sid Lowe.
The reason it all happened so late was simple: Chelsea feared that Manchester City would become involved and prompt an auction. It waited until City had signed Edin Dzeko, satisfying the club’s striking needs, before making the bid. When Chelsea did, Liverpool told Torres. It would be naive to assume that Torres had no idea that there was a bid coming, no inkling of what was being cooked up. But he could not control it. Liverpool, for its part, could have rejected it and carried on regardless. Instead, it told the striker about the bid. To which he said: “OK, well, let’s negotiate then.”
Instead, Liverpool went public — and it was Liverpool, not Torres or Chelsea, which went public — to say that it had turned down the offer. In doing so, Liverpool forced Torres’ hand. And rather than frightening Chelsea away for good, the Reds also forced up the price.
Torres was not sure he would get another chance to move to a club as competitive as Chelsea. He had not initially anticipated the bid this winter. Now he was being presented with an opportunity. If he turned it down, he feared being trapped. Would that train pass through the station again?

Way to go Liverpool
So sick about giving up a four goal lead right now. Big weekend for City and Spurs I guess.
I doubt that Lampard meant to say this
Chelsea defender Ashley Cole will become England’s most capped full-back when he starts on Wednesday, and Lampard paid special tribute to his team-mate.
“I don’t think his contribution can be understated,’’ he said.
I just saw this on soccernet
It’s great (though it almost has to be a joke):
Bendtner confidence off the scale
Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has scored highly in ‘self-perceived competence’ after Arsenal’s sport psychologist Jacques Crevoisier revealed that the Danish striker’s mark was off the scale.
“One of the categories is called ‘self perceived competence,’ i.e. how good the player himself thinks he is,‘’ Crevoisier told Swedish magazine Offside. ’’On a scale up to 9, Bendtner got 10! We have never seen that before. Pat Rice [Arsenal’s assistant manager] was sitting next to me and couldn’t stop laughing.
I saw he thinks he's worth 50k pounds a week

So what's my bigger problem in FIFA:
either, having very limited creative nous in the final third, mixed with general ineptness at playing a good ball through the defence (generally resulting in an endless string of passing around the area before losing the ball and suffering on the counter)…or, a need to pass the ball out of defense every time, even with pressing attackers?

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.
I love the smaller European football leagues.
According to this, the FA will start punishing players who withdraw from the England squad without being checked by the English team doctors. However, the best part of the article is this:
The problem is not confined to England.
In a bizarre case, Sparta Prague withdrew Czech duo Tomas Pekhart and Vaclav Kadlec and Croatian defender Manuel Pamic from international duty for fitness reasons this week – then fielded all three in a friendly against Zenit St Petersburg in Spain on Wednesday.
In an apparent attempt to disguise the players’ identities, their names didn’t appear on the teamsheet and the three wore jerseys with teammates’ names on them – Pamic playing as Jakub Podany, Kadlec as Pavel Kaderabek and, most bizarrely of all, Pekhart, who is white, as black Cameroonian midfielder Martin Abena.
Sparta’s plan seems to have been rumbled when a Czech journalist recognized the players in photos posted on Zenit’s website.

Van Persie
He’s pretty hot right now, nine goals in his last five PL games.
I wish that Arsenal were at Barca this week and home later, when Nasri and Vermaelen should be back, but at least Fabregas and Van Persie are healthy and in form for once and they won’t have to play Denilson or Squillaci. Arsenal started Silvestre and Song as center backs against Barcelona last year, didn’t have RVP at all, and in their loss they had to start Denilson, Rosicky and Diaby in midfield in that game they lost 4-1. The team that they put on the field in the 2-2 game that Barcelona dominated was better, though they lost Arshavin and Gallas early and had to sub Denilson, for one. Oh, and it’s nice to not have Bendtner as the sole striker like they did for both of those games.
I take that back on Song
I think he shifted back to cover for Gallas once he went out, so that they didn’t have to expose Sol Campbell. And he really struggled as I recall. I’m terrified of how Djourou and Koscielny will be exposed. Still, any time you’re starting Almunia and Silvestre behind a Denilson/Rosicky/Diaby midfield, with Bendtner as your striker, you’re in a complete mess. Fortunately, zero of those guys should be out there (though a couple of them will probably be on the bench), so surely they’ll get a stronger result.

I have no hope in that competition. All I meant to say was that you have a better chance of not being completely dominated with several world class players than with a second unit up the middle (with some very flawed players). They could play a lot better and still lose by the same aggregate score or worse.
