Can Beltre develop the ability to pull his wrists in on inside stuff,
or is that more innate?
Que sera, sera.
Sure.
He does a pretty good job of keeping his hands tucked before extension, and his wrists/hands are very quick. He just needs to mature at the plate. His raw offensive tools will jump off the page if his approach can take a step forward. Big if. Jumbo Diaz-sized if.
If he could get it in his head
that taking a pitch, in order to get a better pitch later or a walk, was actually a good thing, he’d probably leap forward.
"I wanted to go out there and punch Julio" - Ron Washington
when Joey Votto was coming up, the Reds made him take until he had a strike every at bat
I read an interview with Votto saying how much he hated having to do that, but that he could look back and see how much it helped him learn patience and strike zone control.
It's not that he wouldn't do it
He just can’t stop himself from swinging. That said, he matured a little bit in 2010. Not enough, but baby steps.
But is that true about getting pulled from games?
I know he got pulled a couple of times really early (and I think we would wonder if he was getting traded briefly) and then it would turn out that he was first pitch swinging or something.
Or I could be making that up…
Are there legit
opinions from other scouts who think that Beltre’s problem is not a lack of one particular hitting skill (patience) but a more fundamental problem with his hit tool that he cannot learn (or unlearn) enough to be considered an AA or better ML prospect? IF so, how would they formulate that argument? Or, not quite sure how to phrase it, what aspect of his hit tool is it that they think he doesn’t/won’t have? This opens up a larger issue of the relation between skills and tools I suppose…
Well, that's at least encouraging.
I was under the impression that he got jammed on the inside stuff far too often.
Que sera, sera.
If the location is right, a good FB on the hands can jam most hitters.
Beltre’s problem comes down to swinging when he shouldn’t swing. A ball could be headed for his cup, but if he thought he could make contact, he would attempt to hit it.
I seem to recall someone in the AL West doing just this in 2010
I am sure someone here can remember.
I know that its green
Omar Beltre
JP, do you think that OBeltre’s ground ball rates and strike outs could translate from AAA to ML? Is his command good enough that he could be a darkhorse ML rotation candidate later in the year? is his upside enough that he could enjoy success in that role?
Depends on the FB command
Without it, he won’t last long in the rotation. I think he’s a better fit in the pen, but his arsenal is deep enough to start. He is definitely a player worth keeping an eye on in 2011. Adjustment is everything in baseball, and I’m really curious to see if Beltre can make the necessary adjustments against quality major league hitters. If he can, he will find success. He has the stuff to stick around.
seems like he could be a guy that might be able to take a small step and end up with a big leap
The velocity, sinking stuff, and ability to make hitters miss sure would be a tantalizing package if he can just get a handle on his command.
What are his offspeed pitches? Doesn’t he throw a split?
EBeltre as a boom or bust prospect
What are the odds he booms, and what are the odds he busts?

Fifty-fifty, though...
…there’s only a ten percent chance of that

Have there been/are there
any prospects that in the minors showed/have shown a similar combination of skills? Greg Golson? Laynce Nix? Marlon Byrd?

How about a floor-ceiling thing?
Like at worst he could end up another Golson and at best he could end up another Carlos Beltran.

What happened to the Griffey/young Bonds comp?
THE RANGERS ARE FULL OF UNBELIEVEABLE SUCK GIVE UP NOW IT DOES NOT MATTER GOOD BYE.

Comps like that
have a way of fading away as a prospect ages/develops. Very rarely will a 17 year-old prospect turn into the player his raw tools suggest is a possibility.
Yeah, I just remember that being thrown around at the time of the trade
It was beyond premature and hyperbolic, I thought.

Sounds sort of like Howie Kendrick
Kendrick has such a quick swing but little to no plate discipline. He can put the bat on the ball in almost any location the pitcher throws it. In the minors, he got away with it because pitchers can’t locate as well, but in the show, the pitchers throw him non-strikes and he pops up or grounds out too much.
