Dave Cameron's 2/9/11 Chat - Rangers Questions

Here's some selected Rangers questions from today's chat.  I left one Victor Martinez question in just for Josey.

3:02
[Comment From Brendan]  One of your homies did a piece on Derek Holland for RotoGraphs and had generally nice things to say. What are your thoughts on him?
3:03
Dave Cameron:  I'm a big fan. I think he could be one of the Rangers' best starters this year.

3:10
[Comment From JD]  I really want to trade Michael Young but don't want to give up any cash or prospects to do it. And oh yeah, I don't want to take any bad contracts in return.
3:11
Dave Cameron:  You realize that most leaks to the media are from the teams dealing with Texas trying to drive the price down, right?

3:15
[Comment From Turd Ferguson]  While I come out on management's side of the Michael Young dispute, certainly I feel it is their fault for giving him $16MM AAV in the first place - not only because he's overpaid by give or take $5MM a year, but because it inflated his sense of self-worth that was already inflated by inexplicable gold gloves.
3:15
Dave Cameron:  I don't think Michael Young would think any less of himself if his paycheck was smaller.

3:17
[Comment From eric cartman]  if you had to jump on a bandwagon for 5 years what teams bandwagon would you jump on?
3:17
Dave Cameron:  Texas, Cincinnati, or Toronto.

3:21
[Comment From Bret]  Might a reasonable solution to the Young/Rangers situation involve them just coming to an agreement to buy-out his contract?
3:22
Dave Cameron:  He's not at that point. You buy-out guys who are totally worthless, or close to it. Young has value, it's just not $16MM a year value.

3:22
[Comment From Bo]  It seems like the traditional media is obsessed with the perception that Michael Young is a great guy and teammate, while the stat community thinks he's an A-hole (I'm generalizing). Why the disconnect?
3:23
Dave Cameron:  In general, the stat community enjoys taking the opposite stance of the traditional media. They'll look for chances to disprove whatever the MSM is saying.

3:27
[Comment From Ed Wade]  I know you hate to answer baseball questions that take any real thought, but try this one. How does a Lee for Young trade improve the Astros any? It does not help them unload a big contract, it just swaps one. It does not make the Astros better on offense, it only weakens us. It only makes us a little better on defense but it displaces more players. So please explain how this move would makes sense
3:28
Dave Cameron:  Nothing like vitriol from bitter Astros fans. It's pretty simple - Carlos Lee should never play left field again, so if they use him at first base, he gets in Brett Wallace's way. Wallace deserves playing time more than the ridiculously overrated Chris Johnson, so swapping Lee for Young allows you to play a young player who might actually turn out okay.

3:31
[Comment From bender]  Tough question because obviously a lot will change in the next yearish but who do you think is the next albatross?
3:31
Dave Cameron:  The more I look at 2011 projections, the more Victor Martinez looks like he might be due for a crash, in which case he'd be a remarkably overpaid DH.

3:33
[Comment From UncleAlbert]  Rangers have no use for Carlos Lee
3:33
Dave Cameron:  Neither Moreland nor Napoli should be viewed as full time players. They absolutely need another 1B/DH type.

3:36
[Comment From UncleAlbert]  But clearly Moreland/Napoli would form a fine platoon and so Lee's a waste there. And Napoli is prob a better hitter than Lee is now anyway.
3:36
Dave Cameron:  If you're platooning Moreland/Napoli at first base, who is the DH?

3:38
[Comment From Jon Daniels]  Was Francisco for Napoli a good trade? I like the bat, but I'm starting to think Frankie was a pretty good reliever - and you can never have too much pitching.
3:38
Dave Cameron:  Sure you can. I'd argue that the A's currently have too much relief pitching.

3:48
[Comment From UncleAlbert]  as far as Ranger DH, since both Moreland and Napoli cannot play 1B at the same time, I'd speculate that in a post Michael Young scenario they'll split DH duties between whomever it is not starting at 1B, Chris Davis, David Murphy, or someone else. I don't see why they should spend the money (from Young) on a slug like Lee... though maybe saving 1 yr works for them...
3:49
Dave Cameron:  You have three LH and one RH bat in that scenario. If you want to platoon Murphy and Moreland, you need another RH bat.
