OT: Cover Songs
Instead of doing work (which is probably going to bite me in the ass come tomorrow morning), I started going through youtube and finding random music/songs to listen to. I came across Pearl Jam's (Eddie Vedder's) version of Tom Petty's classic, I won't back down. And, I must say, it is probably one of the best cover songs I have ever heard.
I'm just curious...What are some of y'alls favorite covered songs?
Here's just a few I've come across...
Eddie Vedder covering Tom Petty
John Mayer Trio covering The Mamas & The Papas
And yeah...anything the Beatles cover.

Not a huge fan of the original...
but Five Finger Death Punch’s recent cover of “Bad Company” is pretty good.
Since this is a music thread ...
scroll up to about 2:30 in this video and check out how Stevie Ray handles a broken guitar string.

Was an awesome guitar player, but I really mean his rhythm playing. His solos almost always sound the same. Got stuck in one blues pentatonic position a whole lot.

Pearl Jam
Last Kiss
Metallica…..Bob Seger Turn the Page is pretty dang good.
I'm not sure how I feel about the Metallica cover of Seger
It’s got a decidedly different feel to it, I don’t like it as well.
Admittedly though, I’m a Seger fan and not much of a Metallica fan.

PJ's cover of Last Kiss may be the worst 3 minutes of music in the history of mankind.

i like the red hot chili peppers version of Higher Ground
Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Superstition” (another stevie wonder song)
Chris Isaak’s “Only the Lonely”
Van Halen “You Really Got Me”
Norah Jones “Turn Me On”, “Cold, Cold Heart”…any of her covers, really.

Absolutely true

sounds like he's in pain
reminds me of Act Naturally. It’s not like Cash had to try hard to sound like he was taking a shit and it hurt. Great singer matched with a good song, but yeah, role playing there.

GNR's version of "Knockin On Heaven's Door" is awesome
I also enjoy their version of “Live and Let Die”
And I think Jason Boland’s version of “Tulsa Time” is excellent.

I'd submit "Hot Rod Lincoln" as my favorite cover song
The original by Johnny Bond was good, the most famous cover by Commander Cody is better. George Thorogood does a stout version and Asleep at the Wheel made it their signature song.
I’m also a fan of the Twangbangers/Bill Kirchen’s 10 minute long rendition with all the solos sampling famous rock artists.

I realize that. I know who wrote the song.
When “Hallelujah” is covered today, most people are covering Jeff Buckley’s version of the song. Nobody sounds like Leonard Cohen, they’re all trying to be Jeff Buckley. That’s the point I was trying to make.
