Dave Bush will be on the 25 man roster
Ron Washington has reportedly announced that Dave Bush has made the Texas Rangers' 25 man roster as the team's long man.
Bush was battling with Brett Tomko for that job, and I would guess that out dates had something to do with this decision. Tomko has been getting much better reviews in camp, but Bush had an out clause in his contract he was going to exercise today if he wasn't on the 40 man roster, and Tomko's out clause isn't until June 1.
This means that, if we assume Alexi Ogando is the 5th starter, there are two jobs in the bullpen still open, with Mason Tobin and Pedro Strop likely the favorites for those two jobs, and Mark Lowe and Tomko also in the mix.

Does that mean they burned an option on Font for no reason?
Or is there some exception for players optioned before the season began that it doesn’t count if they recall him and then put him on the 60-day DL?
by Darrell McKown on Mar 27, 2011 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions
No
Options wouldn’t take effect anyway until the regular season started. Also as long as a playerr doesn’t spend more than 20 (May be 15 im not 100% sure) days in the minors on optional assignment the option doesn’t count.
I don’t know how exactly backdating works with this but this shouldn’t burn an option on Font no. It will give him 1 year of service time which will affect his FA and arbitration in the later years but he will still have 3 option years starting next year
It's 20 days
Found it on the BP website.
Given his age and injury, I would trade the year of service time for the extra option at this point. If they burned an option on him this year, he would be very likely to run out of options before being ready to go on a major league roster.

maybe they will put Hunter on the 60 day DL
Maybe not. I know reports say 6 weeks, but is that how long until they expect him to be game-ready? or is that how long until he will be ready to start throwing again?

I don't hate this
I don’t love it either… but with injuries we need arms.
Meh.

Yuck, but on the other hand
I’m excited to see what Tobin and Strop can do in the pen. I don’t like having Bush on the team, but I can’t really say it’s a terrible idea given the circumstances.

These last few days have been weird...
We’ve been beaten over the head by the Feliz decision, and after him taking his talents to the bullpen, beaten over the head about his value therein, only to have Tommy Hunter get hurt the same day of the announcement and now our projected 8th inning dude is probably the 5th starter for a month instead.
Then, Dave Bush made the team because he has a better agent than Brett Tomko and we have a need in the bullpen…

Oh, but our need in the bullpen
doesn’t involve maybe our 2nd best relief righty somehow.

Because suddenly starting depth is an issue...

Well
It is an issue for the first month to six weeks of the season.
By June 1, you would figure Hunter, Webb and Feldman should all be back, which alleviates some of this.
But this is why I was saying a month or two ago I’d be okay with giving Kevin Millwood a major league deal and making him our 5th starter.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 27, 2011 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions
Webb
I don’t think we should count on anything from Webb. What you get is simply a bonus.
I agree on Millwood. I was laughed at for suggesting signing him a month ago, because he might take a rotation spot from Derek Holland.
by Darrell McKown on Mar 27, 2011 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions
This is also why I was saying
that the Rangers need to go with their best 5 for the rotation, which includes Feliz in the rotation.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Bush
I’ll put the over/under on starts he makes at 7.
by Darrell McKown on Mar 27, 2011 11:55 AM CDT reply actions
I understand that
But, right now, when we need another starter, it looks like a choice between Kirkman, Hurley, Scheppers and Bush. And I suspect we will need a 6th and/or 7th starter relatively soon (before Hunter, Webb or Feldman are ready).
by Darrell McKown on Mar 27, 2011 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions
he'll get some innings
but in relief of Ogando or Kirkman. It’s possible he gets a couple of spot starts, but I think they want to use him sparingly.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
I think they're planning
On making Ogando/Bush the fifth starter. Try and get five innings from Ogando and have Bush clean up.

I wonder if they'll consider
Putting Treanor in AAA to start the season and carry 13 pitchers to start the season. With Napoli we have a backup catcher to give Torrealba a rest once a week.
Once Hunter gets healthy or we see how the young guys are doing we getter a better idea and bring up Treanor in May/June.

Treanor cant go to AAA
Hes on a major league contract and is out of options and has too much service time
Well that answers that.

If I was a betting man...
Treanor would start the season on the dl. I just don’t see how they keep 3 catchers. Thenthey could carry the extra pitcher or have Davis up to start the season
Texas Rangers- You hang 'em, we bang 'em!
Whatever, he'll be gone by May 1st anyway.
