I don't think I could handle that this year.

With a low draft spot and most of our farm talent way down the ranks, that would hurt.

by Arson55 on Mar 29, 2011 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Feliz wouldn't yo-yo

In a month or two when Webb or Hunter are ready, more likely 2 months, there are going to be a lot more issues with our rotation in that timeframe. How long do you think Harrison sticks this time? Will Holland be consistent enough? How will Ogando’s rough delivery work in the rotation? We will soon be dealing with Kirkman, Bush and Hurley starts.

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

by NothinG on Mar 29, 2011 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Starting the year there and then going to the 'pen if he can't cut it in the roto really isn't yo-yoing though.

Which you have to think was always gonna be the case with Feliz.

If he struggled too badly as a starter he would’ve moved back to the bullpen this year eventually.

Hell, I think he probably would’ve been back in the bullpen come playoff time regardless.

Yeah, I dunno what the fuck happened concerning the pitching staff's construction this year.

I think Maddux probably had too much input, based on the statements that have been made about needing a closer and him supposedly “convincing” them to add Bush.

by LSJ on Mar 29, 2011 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, Bush just got rocked all freaking spring long and they went and found a way to shoehorn him in there.

He did literally nothing to deserve a roster spot except being someone Maddux likes and has worked with before, and doesn’t really have a track record to warrant a spot either.

I think Kirkman or Tomko have much more business on the 25-man at this point, assuming Tomko can be optioned like Kirkman when he needs to be.

A nightingale in a golden cage

by LSJ on Mar 29, 2011 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Bush vs. Tomko is most likely about outdates and options

As for Kirkman, could just be that they don’t want to mess with his development as a starter.

Point being, given the injuries and other constraints, seemed pretty clear that Bush was going to make the roster. That he’s not the 5th starter I think speaks more to influence (or lack thereof) than the fact that he made the team. But I also doubt that Maddux really wanted Bush as the 5th starter anyway.

by ab03 on Mar 29, 2011 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

As do I.

Strop’s wildness was maddening last year, but his numbers at AAA were also tantalizing.

Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP

by t ball on Mar 29, 2011 3:31 PM CDT reply actions

I think the bullpen is as good as you can ever reasonably construct a bullpen.

Great closer, a couple of solid setup guys; and some filler. It’d be nice to have a more reliable power righty out there, but they make up for it in sheer numbers of arms available.

The rotation, well, I think it is about as high variance a rotation as I’ve ever seen the Rangers put out there. Certainly not the worst – every one of those guys, even Ogando, has the potential to be good. But all of them have floors that can be somewhat worrisome; be it due to regression (CJ or Colby), immaturity (Harrison or Holland), or total inexperience (Ogando)

If Rhodes is healthy

then he and Oliver are quite good for middle relief against lefties.

The 7th and 8th innings against righties will certainly need O’Day and one of Strop or Lowe to step up.

But, frankly, I think that if one of your biggest worries is that your bullpen isn’t very good once you are 5 or 6 arms deep, you’re in really good shape.

Tito's?

Interesting. Why?

Also, I get Tito’s because it’s supposedly good vodka for cheap…but I really can’t tell the difference between vodka’s once you get past Smirnoff. I have a vague feeling that Grey Goose is smoother, but that’s about it.

What makes certain vodka better than others?

I've always liked Skyy and

Monopolowa. Cheap vodkas give me a headache, but those two don’t cost a whole lot but just somehow taste, I dunno, cleaner, smoother, and don’t make my head hurt.

I think they'll get by

From Hardball Talk’s previews this morning, below are the AVERAGE seasons for the top 4 starters:

Roy Halladay – 3.32 ERA, 235 innings

Cliff Lee – 3.85 ERA, 218 innings

Roy Oswalt – 3.18 ERA, 221 innings

Cole Hamels – 3.53 ERA, 216 innings

though it should be said

that is using BR’s 162 game average line, which might not indicate an actual average season. Below are their average IP over the last 5 seasons:

Halladay – 236
Oswalt – 207
Lee – 193 (includes 2007 when he pitched 97 ML innings and 48 minor league innings)
Hamels – 189 (includes rookie year)

Wow.

I saw a quote suggesting it will be Contreras

because the manager doesn’t think Madson can handle the pressure

which is odd because

Madson has said he wants to close

I have to wonder if JD not getting his new contract finalized had any effect whatsoever on a contract like this for CJ

CJ said had we offered it in January we may have had time to work something out and that was right when we were hearing about once a week how JDs deal would be done any time.
