Josh Hamilton out 6-8 weeks, Chris Davis being recalled
Okay, those initial reports that Josh Hamilton's injury wasn't serious?
Nevermind.
Texas Ranger outfielder Josh Hamilton is going to be out 6-8 weeks with a "small fracture" in his humerus bone, and Chris Davis is being recalled to take his place on the 25 man roster.
I'm a little surprised by Davis getting the call...with Julio Borbon now being the only "true" centerfielder on the 25 man roster, I figured Craig Gentry, or possibly Endy Chavez, would be called up to replace Hamilton.
Davis, though, turned heads in spring training and is off to a hot start, and I guess the Rangers want to get a handle on whether he can be counted on to contribute in the majors this season.
I wouldn't be surprised if Gentry were to come up and replace a reliever at some point in the near future, though.

From Jeff Wilson's piece:
“The combination of the size and the athleticism puts him at risk, but I would want him to continue playing that way,” Daniels said. “I look at this at a unique deal. How many times had he dived head-first?”
The fracture was so small, said Daniels, that it didn’t appear on initial X-rays taken Tuesday afternoon.

I was wondering about this.
Fractures are something that should show up on X-ray. I wonder if they did it in the Tigers in-house medical facilities?

I know it's possible,
I’m just wondering about it. 6-8 weeks suggests something not minute, but perhaps it was the difference between the team physician and the radiologist/shadow chaser looking at it.

Agreed. And one of the things I love most about the Rangers
is that this team is not built around one player. Now before anyone slings monkey feces at me, I’m just saying; the boys showed us last year they don’t let things like this get them down (Game 1 ALCS vs. Game 2.)
Though tomorrow, holy Christ on a cracker, I looked up Bush’s blah blah blah and OMG! I think I will just wait for the highlights tomorrow and pass on the game.
Good point about the last....maybe I should have asked my radiologist aunt that before I spent money on the emergency room doctor/X-Rays, the primary care doctor/X-Rays and then the radiologist reading the MRI :)
Would have saved me a bunch of money right before Christmas. Although her specialty is mammography studies, so I’m sure her knowledge would be a little different than the radiologist at an orthopedic clinic.

Although, I have a question about this
I don’t know the answer to every legal question. I probably have a good idea but I wouldn’t know as much about employment discrimination as a plaintiff who actually went through an employment discrimination trial.
Do doctors know more about the entirety of their field than lawyers know about theirs?
Don't you think
This would be analogous to asking about the pleading standard or something similar? In other words, something very elementary that almost any attorney would be very likely to know.
by brettgardner on Apr 12, 2011 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions
I'd say so too
"It has been said that baseball is to the United States what revolutions are to Latin America, a safety valve for letting off steam. I think baseball is more serious than any Latin American revolution. But, then, I am a serious fan." -- George F. Will
I guess I don't know
Why do you think it is? Does every doctor get trained to read x-rays or MRI scans? And even if they have a rotation on it, how much of that knowledge is retained if they know that isn’t their chosen field.
Well
Maybe in a vacuum I could agree with you that it was unclear, but GB started the convo by laying out some knowledge of x-rays. The other guy (girl?) countered, most likely not knowing GB’s profession, and I stepped in with the douchey/help.
It’s all very clear here:

Sort of.
X-Rays and MRI and CT scans are part of basic anatomy now. Not in depth, but the basics. It’s important for CT scans because they slice the body in a somewhat counterituitive way, so it helps to start thinking about the body that way from early on. Our anatomy lab had a whole body sliced into 2 inch horizontal slices and then stored as a library…I think most schools have that now.
We also cover the basics of different tissue types under MRI and X-ray and what stuff is supposed to look like.
In 3rd year, there’s a radiology rotation so you get more exposure on how to look for pathology and such. It doesn’t make every doctor a radiologist, but it should make it so they can interpret the notes from a radiologist.
tl;dr: Every doctor has some minimal training in reading film, but there’s a reason why you have to specialize to be a radiologist.

I can understand the team doctor (not sure if he's FP or ortho surgeon)
missing a small fracture on XRay that a radiologist would pick up. But then again, you figure that team doctors probably have looked at shitloads of xrays from their players getting nicked up.

Okay
So the new rule is, don’t send Josh Hamilton from third if there might be a play at home.
That makes sense, because I remember everyone complaining about how stupid and senseless it was last year when Josh came around and scored from second on an infield single. He should have stayed at third.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion of this.
I get that Daniels doesn’t want to see Hamilton change his style of play, but couldn’t they at least encourage him to avoid the fullly-laid-out, head-first slides?

All I’m saying is, a trend is starting with Anderson and decision making. It began last year and now it’s rearing it’s ugly head yet again. I don’t care about how many times he’s right on calls. He’s paid to do what he does. But the obvious bad calls are the ones that stand out.

Irish's point is stupid
but we dont’ play Hamilton at CF because of injury potential but we played him there for the playoffs. Something similar could apply to the basepaths
The answer is to pinch run for him everytime he gets on base. He's too fragile!

Honestly, and I know that's a long-ass time, but bear with me
We haven’t gotten a lot of Josh’s big bat so far this season, at least before today’s triple. He’s been outshone by Cruz, Kinsler, and Moreland to a lesser extend. Where we’ll actually miss him the most is his defense, but Murphy is at least an adequate LF. So I’m concerned, but not quite worried. This is what all our depth is for.
Our lineup just looks completely different without him
Producing or not, he changes our lineup for the better when he’s there.
Great,
so we just need people who can’t be reasonably expected to continue their hot streaks for much longer to continue for 6-8 weeks.

It sucks that Josh is going to be out for 6-8 weeks
but I’m not really worried about it. Offensively, we’ll be fine with the lineup that we have. Defensively, I’m a bit worried but I’m sure we’ll pull through. I guess this means more of Moreland in the outfield.
And CD...
really doesn’t fit in with what this team has right now.
Murphy, Moreland, and Davis are all lefties so you can’t really platoon with a RH OF/1B. It will be interesting to see how the playing time is distributed.
The fat lady is warming up CD. You better shut her damn mouth.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Yeah...
I thought it was odd that they didn’t bring up someone with CF experience. Probably just bringing Davis up for his potential bat. This is probably his last chance to show he can do something with TX too.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 12, 2011 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions
1 option is good all year
He can be sent up and down as much as possible
If he stays up the rest of the year we retain that last option for next year
Last option
if the Rangers are going to get anything for him, CD needs to show something now.
"I wanted to go out there and punch Julio" - Ron Washington
last option
"Sometimes you just want to sit back and watch somebody throw 100." - Jeff Passan on Neftali Feliz
"Baseball's all that's real" - JB
As I said in the other thread
This potentially saves Davis’ last option. If he was in fact the positional player they sacrificed to go with a 13 man staff then bringing him up now possibly saves his option if he doesn’t get sent back down.
Bring up Chavez after Bush’s start tomorrow and roll with that lineup. It does put more pressure on the young guys because without 2 long men (and with the one being a guy like Tobin) if they have a stretch where all three of them are off their games we could be looking at a exhausted bullpen in short time

Hurley and Kirkman are down there but they are starters not relievers and I would hate to have to bring them up in May as such.
Hurley's not going to give you a full season of starting, so some relief innings are probably in his future anyway
While I’d prefer to give him development time, if he had to eat middle relief innings, we’d be ok.

Yeah, we knew coming in injuries were going to happen. That's why we built the roster the way it is.
That said, we do need to learn for this. We have special outfield rules to keep Hamilton from getting hurt. We need to do the same on the base paths too.

I didn’t factor in who is replacing him. It’s not as easy as Davis replaces Hamilton.
The Rangers are as well-suited as you can be for this type of injury outside of having Jason Heyward hanging around in the minors. So, let’s just set it as a max at 2.0 WAR but realize that efficient spreading out of PA between good players means it’s probably more like 1.

I vastly prefer MK.
Of course, if i had one day to spend in one park id do Animal Kingdom. And epcot would be ladt on the list. But it’s a preference thing. If you want food, alcohol and edutainment, Epcot. If you want theming and attractions MK.
I can answer more thoroughly when I’m in the hotel.
by philkid3 on Apr 12, 2011 6:47 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Ok
Part of the issue with MK was that we were told that it is more crowded so us going there at 2 wouldn’t be as worth it because we wouldn’t’ get to see as many attractions.
I hadn’t even considered Animal Kingdom.
Epcot doesn't pull that many fewer people but it's capacity is huge.
The issue is that epcot has two low capacity attractions that are the most popular. Soaring and test track get massive lines and run out if fast passes early in the day. So while the park doesn’t feel as crowded, the two main attractions are dominated in ways no other attraction in another park is.
Dak I love but more than most. It very specifically caters to my interests (exploration, animals, epic theming).

I had considered it and only dismissed it because I saw it 20 years ago

Oh yeah, DHS is a completely different park now.

Okay, longer answer (and ability to answer questions) now.
Magic Kingdom is definitely going to be the most crowded, though I believe they have recently been less crowded than expected (after having been more crowded recently). Saturday will begin the busiest week of the year, but Friday should be okay. It hasn’t felt busy to me this week by my standards for busy.
Don’t worry about the relative business of the parks affecting your ability to do more or less attractions because we’ve got the efficiency thing down to a science. You should be able to at least do your top eight attractions (that is not a random number), and if you’re smart, more. But while some parks will be less busy, they are also designed to be less busy, so the result will be the same as far as how many attractions you can do. Epcot and Animal Kingdom will be slower, but there are fewer attractions. If you’re worried about too many people in the restaurants and streets and stores, though, yeah, MK is going to be the worst, followed by Hollywood Studios (hits capacity the most, I believe, and always feels busy because it’s so relatively small).
Magic Kingdom has most of the flagship type stuff and the most attractions, and the most hours. It has a couple thrill rides and all the classics and such. It also has the weakest restaurants.
Hollywood Studios is all about the attractions. It has some restaurants that go for theme more than great menus, and it’s’ really small. Plus, one of its biggest people eaters (Star Tours) is closed. It has arguably the two most thrilling rides, though, in Tower of Terror (which also rarely has a long line, I was walking on for the most part Saturday) and Rockin’ Rollercoaster. All that said, DHS is a half day park for me.
Epcot has fewer edutainment attractions than it use to. It has the best food by many miles and a lot of alcohol showcases, and, as mentioned, two big time attractions (Test Track and Soarin’) which pull in all the guests, without many other attractions to share the load, so they have huge wait times. It has a thrill ride in Mission: Space, a technology expo that is sometimes awesome (just depends on what they have at the time) in Innoventions, and more stuff to walk around and look at and learn about than simply ride. It has my favorite night show, if you stay that long, free Coke flavors from the around the world, and, um. . . Oh, right now it’s the Flower and Garden festival, so if you’re in to gardening there’s that.
Animal Kingdom has fewer attractions than the other parks, but it has a big tech dark ride in Dinosaur, a pretty nifty rollercoaster in Expedition Everest, a safari, and some good shows. And a raft ride if you like raft rides. It’s by far the best themed park, and built around wandering about and exploring, rather than following clear paths to obvious payoffs. And, of course, it has a whole bunch of animals. And it appears it’s the only of the parks you haven’t been to. That said, it’s the least popular for a reason. Some of that reason is just not being as established as the other parks, but it is lacking some in attractions and people don’t seem to care about animal exhibits as much as they do rides. I love it, but it’s not for everyone. Also, DAK closes the earliest, and the animals settle down in the afternoon, so if you’re getting off at two, it might not be the best choice.
Anyway, there’s that. My love of the parks goes MK > DAK > Epcot > DHS, but I’ve spent a large chunk of my life in MK, including almost every day for a little more than a year’s time, though.
Hopefully that helps you make a decision. If you want to get lots of attractions, then MK is your choice, both for how many there are and how late the park is open after two in the afternoon. Oh, speaking of two in the afternoon, you’d probably get there right before or right after the parades start dumping people in to the attractions, so right when you get there, the lines would be the longest they’ll be all day.
You're making me miss WDW.....
I think we’re headed to DL in August….going to have to make a return trip to WDW in 2012.
EE is my favorite roller coaster…..the whole setup is so great.

When were the first and last times you road it?
DL is still fun. The park itself I may like more than any of ours, it’s just that the whole property is not as packed with stuff to do. But Grizzly River Run, Indiana Jones and California Screamin’ are three god tier attractions we don’t have.
Rode it in Dec 2008 for the first time....last time was last May....
My daughter absolutely loves it, too….
The trip to DL is more of a trip to DL and San Diego….we’ve always wanted to go to both….

Okay, I think by 2008 the problems had started.
I still love it, but it’s not the ride it was when it was opened in 2006. Back then, the Yeti lunged at you, the caves were filled with steam, there were more waterfall effects, it was darker inside, and other stuff.
Mostly, the steam and the Yeti. They’re working on the yeti, and I have faith it will be fixed soon, but it’s sadly not quite as great as it once was. Still great, though.
Yeah....I've still never seen the Yeti in full motion....
still a great coaster…I hope they get it fixed, too.

Yes, it is still great.
I would say prior to its issues, it was firmly on my god tier of attractions with the Mansion, Space Mountain, Tower of Terror and Splash*. Now it’s behind them, but the first attraction on the next tier.
*For our Disneyland visitors, I’d put their Mansion and Splash, as well as Pirates, Grizzly River Run, and Indiana Jones on that tier, as well.
Easter.....

The week before Easter is usually the busiest week of the year.
I think it’s a lot of spring breaks or something, I don’t know. Anyway, it almost always is, and it’s expected to be again this year.
It’s like a whole different park that week (and the week before or after, depending on the year). Just an endless sea of people. Attractions like mine that are normally 20 minutes a the longest start challenging two hours. They have to close the park mid day because they can’t fit more people on Main Street. Cast members are employed in positions where they simply walk around and organize crowds. It’s a zoo. And kind of fun to watch, actually.
New Years Eve and Christmas are worse days (and the 4th of July, I think, too), but the Easter period is multiple sustained days of insanity.
interesting
I thought the last week of Dec was the busiest. I know WDW is generally busy mid-March to mid-April due to spring break. Didn’t think Easter week would be the busiest.
Best time I have ever been to WDW is in Oct. Nice weather and small crowds. And one can usually get a resonable hotel rate that month.
September is far and away the best.
Weather is perfect, and there are sometimes days that are in the teens in attendances (as in less than 20,000). A day when I can get in Peter Pan in 20 minutes after a parade is a good day. Not that I’m going to stand in line for 20 minutes for Peter Pan, it’s just a sign of good times.
Even before I got to Pras' answer, I was asking myself,
“Why the hell would Robbie raise that question? It’s just going to ruin his evening at Disneyworld…”

Thinking about what that actually involves with Wash makes my head hurt.
I understand not hitting Hamilton second, that’s a little too forward thinking. But why bat Elvis 2nd? Why bat Young 5th? Ugh.

Really
I don’t think I agree. At least, I think Andrus has a better chance of putting up a better a OBP.
I think it will be hard for Andrus to maintain the high walk rates
with so little power. Perhaps he takes a step forward this year and proves me wrong, but I’m a bit uncomfortable with slotting him at the #2 so early.

The 2, I agree
But leadoff, not as certain. You really only need the high OBP and I’m not convinced that he can’t maintain it even if he doesn’t develop power.
Despite his walk rate in non-April months last year?

I’m not sure I’m a huge fan of either in the leadoff spot, but I don’t think it’s sacrilege. Really, my ideal lineup has them both in the bottom half and guys like Murphy and Young at the #2, Beltre 3, Cruz 4 and Napoli/Moreland 5.

Well, he isn't, yet, but I don't think it's cause of his walk rate. His walk rate is off to a terrible start (but OMG .219 ISO*!),
but it was up compared to 2009 almost across the board in 2010, not just in April.
*before today, I think
Might as well. Hitting third isn't that important anyways.
This move might actually make our lineup more efficient.
Why?
3rd isn’t that important.
It would actually probably be a good place for him, if you had somebody better hitting second.
It all starts with a lullaby...
Irony
I was playing The Show before reading this news. I had Hamilton up, hits a sharp ball down the left field line. Slides into second, fractures his forearm. Out 1-2 months. Then I see this. It happened nearly simultaneously.

"It has been said that baseball is to the United States what revolutions are to Latin America, a safety valve for letting off steam. I think baseball is more serious than any Latin American revolution. But, then, I am a serious fan." -- George F. Will
anybody worried about Murphy getting ABs?
as long as Cruz and Kinsler can stay healthy, I’m not too worried. We still have a stout offense. It’s whether or not our pitching can remain as successful as they’ve been.
Another thing, though, when would Davis even play. There’s no way I’d play him over Moreland or Napoli in any situation, so I don’t understand what his role is, and how him getting very little playing time will help him, other than in his wallet for couple months.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Moreland to OF a little more potentially opens up CD?
"You're failing Seymour; what is it with you and failure?"
I'd still rather have Napoli at 1B
even if it is a righty. give me naps
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
That would mean either less Murphy, less MY or Murphy in CF
Two of those make your lineup worse, and one won’t happen because Ron is going out of his way to kiss MY’s ass this year.
It all starts with a lullaby...
I have to think they'll give CD a short leash, but give him at least 2 games early on to prove he has something to offer.
"You're failing Seymour; what is it with you and failure?"
Yeah
This is probably more of an olive branch to CD than anything, but it sucks because we’re making our lineup worse to shoehorn one of the worst offensive 1B in the last three years in there.
It all starts with a lullaby...
We know what CD is capable of
if he can’t get it together now, then at least do it early on, and let the team deal him and give him a fresh start elsewhere, rather than put up gaudy AAA numbers for another season, and us wonder what could have been.
I don’t mind it. Let him sink or swim, once and for all.
"You're failing Seymour; what is it with you and failure?"
There really aren't enough AB's for him to truly do that right now though
And to get him any you’re taking them away from better players to do it.
Really a bad situation, because you’re also down to 3.5 OFer’s.
It all starts with a lullaby...
I get what you're saying, but I have to think the higher ups are truly at their wits end with Davis.
It might not be fair to him, but he really has to show something in 10-15 PAs, or he might be trade bait really quick.
"You're failing Seymour; what is it with you and failure?"
I don't think it's that, I think this has more to do with CD's bitching about being optioned after his hot spring.
This is a “okay, you had a good spring and a good start in RR, so we’ll give you an opportunity to shut you up, even if it’s a really bad one.”
It all starts with a lullaby...
Uh huh
Davis is getting called up because he complained about being sent down.

This is an org that likes to keep it's players happy.
Why is that so far fetched?
And why else is he up in a situation when they really have no playing time for him and he doesn’t fit on the roster?
It all starts with a lullaby...
Your usage sucks.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
"I've had people walk out on me before, but not when I was being so charming."
Your first statement
isn’t the blanket statement you think it is. And beyond that, it is an absurd proposition. You don’t get rewarded for bitching from the minor leagues. And before you bring up MY, I would like you to figure out on your own why the situation is completely different. Then tell me the last time anybody that was on the same level as CD got rewarded for bitching.
Who else would have been brought up
Keep in mind the roster ramifications of any decision, ie; whether or not they are on the 40 man roster, etc.
the fact is we only have 2 positional players (besides C) in AAA on the 40 man roster so the first callup was going to be one of those guys.
Now after tomorrow they may very well bring Chavez up but if they would have brought Chavez up today they would likely bring CD up tomorrow so I don’t see how this would turn out any differently
Why would they bring CD up at all unless keeping him happy was a factor?
There’s no playing time for him.
I’d think it would have made much more sense to bring Teagarden up so Mike Napoli can be used off the bench as needed.
It all starts with a lullaby...
So we roll with a 2 man bench?
we had to bring someone up and the only options are Davis, gentry, or someone not on the 40
Napoli will likely see more time at C now. I doubt his number of PAs decreases much just gets moved to C
I don't see how Davis increases the flexility of the bench any.
He can sort of play 3B, but so can MY, so that’s not really a huge bonus.
With Teagarden on the roster, Napoli can obviously play 1B, or be DH’d and let MY play 1B if you want insurance if Moreland needs to be moved to the OF.
And having his bat on the bench really isn’t much of a bonus right now, because there’s no backup CF, and Ron never PH’s for his catchers (if he did, he could just PH Napoli anyway).
There’s no playing time for him, he doesn’t give you anything off the bench Teagarden won’t and it probably would’ve made more sense to call up Gentry – so why the fuck is Davis up here?
It all starts with a lullaby...
Supposedly
He can play 3B better than “sort of.”
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 12, 2011 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions
You think Davis' ability to contribute off the bench is equal to that of Teagarden's?
Really?
"I have thought a lot about why people get so hostile online, and I have come to believe it is primarily because we live in a society with a hypertrophied sense of justice and an atrophied sense of humility and charity, to put the matter in terms of the classic virtues." --Alan Jacobs
Because supposedly, Mike Napoli catching is evil, remember?
Until Hunter got hurt, we where gonna be carrying three catchers.
It all starts with a lullaby...
Are you trying to score points here or are you actually trying to analyze the issue?
"I have thought a lot about why people get so hostile online, and I have come to believe it is primarily because we live in a society with a hypertrophied sense of justice and an atrophied sense of humility and charity, to put the matter in terms of the classic virtues." --Alan Jacobs
Also, Teagarden can rot on the bench an nobody will care
Wheras when Davis sits on the bench people will complain about him being allowed to stagnate.
It all starts with a lullaby...
ok, fair enough
I still don’t know why the Hamilton injury all of a sudden makes you think “Oh shit. We have to take care of that backup C situation. Might as well do that as the first order of business.”
Yeah it doesn't make any sense
Napoli can still play in the field if we want just not DH.
In fact I think this means we will see more of Napoli behind the plate so that we can get Davis some ABs
I doubt we see more Napoli behind the plate than we where already seeing
Davis is gonna affect Murphy and Moreland’s AB’s, not Naps and Torrealba.
It all starts with a lullaby...
I think it would be better to take care of that
Than to bring Davis up and either have him taking AB’s away from better players or sitting on the bench doing nothing.
It all starts with a lullaby...
why?
You care about Davis’ feelings but not Teagarden’s? But you don’t feel the need to reward him even though he is upset? Nothing you are saying is making any sense.
I have such an ice cream headache right now.
We’re not about sending messages. We’re about winning ballgames.-Wash, 04/03/11
What?
Teagarden is perfectly accustomed to being a backup catcher I imagine. I don’t know what his feelings have to do with anything.
I think Teagarden would probably provide you with more value defensively than Davis could offensively in the little playing time either would actually be likely to receive.
I also don’t wanna see Moreland and Murphy sitting to accommodate Chris fucking Davis.
It all starts with a lullaby...
That said, it would probably have made way more sense to bring Gentry up than either of those.
It all starts with a lullaby...
Seems like the best way to think about this
is that Murphy takes over Hamilton’s role and Davis takes over Murphy’s role. That wont’ be exactly what happens but it is a rough heuristic for playing time distribution. You just have to rearrange where Napoli plays
I don’t see an issue with that.
I just don't see why we need Davis for that
When you’ve got Napoli, who has been tearing the cover off the ball and might even get more PH opportunities because he can catch.
It all starts with a lullaby...
I don't know if that's still the case (Napoli evil)
Seems as though we’ve gotten along fine with him catching. And I don’t know for sure that the plan once Hunter came back (or the rotation situation solidified) was to have Teagarden on the roster. Seems to me it was more likely that we would get a CF.
Wait
You want to replace him with Teagarden? Just because Teagarden makes the same sense as David, why the fuck would you want Teagarden?
The CF might make sense but not fucking Teagarden
With CD you can do the same thing
Play Naps at 1B and if something happens to Torrealba he moves to C and Davis can play 1B.
I agree he’s not the ideal piece to bring up but that ideal piece doesn’t exist in our system right now so he’s the best option we have. And I believe part of it was a roster management angle as well. By bringing him up now, if we keep him up all year, we retain that last option so that next spring he isn’t forced to make the OD roster or risk losing to waivers. it may not be the biggest aspect of the decision but I bet it was part of the thought process. Supposedly Davis was the positional player who got sent down because we decided to go with a 8 man pen.

I actually think it's more likely that we see Murph in CF than we see Gentry/Chavez with the club if Borbon sits that soon.
The 3-man bench feels like Wash’s baby, and I’m not sure they’ll cross him unless circumstances absolutely dictate it.

The reason we went with a 3 man bench in the first place
Was because we had three guys in our rotation we couldn’t count on to go more than 4-5 innings
Those guys have shown thru two turns in the rotation they can go deeper than that and so I think we go back to the traditional 4 man bench especially now that our backup CF is hurt.
Assuming that's right
I think we wait at least Ogando’s next turn to see how the blisters are doing.

Hmm.
Pretty interesting food for thought:
Their findings surprise almost everyone. Health, intelligence, happiness, success, character, values, appreciation – they all run in families. But with a few exceptions, adoption and twin researchers find that nature overpowers nurture, especially in the long-run. Kids aren’t like clay that parents mold for life; they’re more like flexible plastic that responds to pressure, but returns to its original shape when the pressure is released.
The upshot: Parents spend too much effort trying to mold their kids for the future, and not enough just enjoying life together

Would be our limited understanding of the impact of the very very very early mind. From the time the brain forms in the womb until the first few years.

Did you call the hypothetical hardware store and buy a theoretical chain saw?
Fun story, but it doesn't speak to her social-science standing, does it?
She’s certainly a big name in her particular field, sure. But the “biosocial heresy” bit’s overblown, as were her arguments.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
Fair point.
Although within criminology, biosocial leanings are viewed as pretty heretical. Until Gottfredson and Hirschi rewrite Self-Control to acknowledge genetic traits, as opposed to parenting, at least.
Maybe they’ll even put that in a peer-reviewed journal this time instead of publishing it themselves.

Did you call the hypothetical hardware store and buy a theoretical chain saw?
If we're talking criminology, that considerably narrows the field.
I thought you meant all of social science, which would arguably include economics, anthropology, political science, geography (at least, human) and the rest of sociology in addition to psychology. You might put law in there, as well.
There are a number of (living) researchers who are huge bad-asses in all of those fields, and whom I’d argue overshadow Harris.
That said, from what I’ve learned of criminology, I understand where you’re coming from…

I’m leaning towards either Real winning or there being a draw.

Ok. One game left to pick today. Spurs @ Lakers
I’ve got the Spurs.

Couldn't do it, with all the starters sitting.
Though I’ll get a measure of personal satisfaction if the Spurs reserves beat the Lakers.

2K11 really fucked up how the handle the 1B getting ground balls far away from the base.
it wont let me, as only controlling the pitcher in the game, go over to tag the base. same thing for double plays. he will throw it over to second, but just stand where he threw it, not going back to cover the base. this has happened with multiple teams and players.

Actually, it used to intentionally fuck up throws on 3-6-1 or 3-6-3 DP’s so you could never ever turn one.

Yep, he's a terrible person.

"I've had people walk out on me before, but not when I was being so charming."
Heh.
I am. But not passionately so.
When I lived in Grapevine, everyone said things like “the Mavs suck,” and “I hate the Mavs.” I know now this was bitter fandom, but at the time I took it at face value and ended up liking the Rangers and Cowboys, but not the Mavs.
When I started to care about the NBA in the mid 90s, I lived nowhere near an NBA team (Nuggets, four hours). There wasn’t even an NBA team with a strong pull among the locals like the Cowboys, Broncos, Rangers and Rockies had. My older brother had grown up loving Magic Johnson, and that rubbed off on me a little. What rubbed off on me a lot was Kobe Bryant being in SI for Kids every month, and the fact that, when I barely knew anything about the NBA in the early 90s, Shaq was one of the, like, four players I knew of. So I just started caring about the Lakers in the mid-late 90s.
It peaked during the first two championship runs, when I was actually pretty rabid. Then the more I watched the NBA, the more I realized I was bored by the NBA. Then the Pistons series broke my heart.
I stayed a Lakers fan, but not the way I’m a Cowboys or Rangers fan. I love the NFL and MLB. I live and die with Cowboys and Rangers games. For the Lakers, I care a little bit about their games enough to check the scores, want them to win, and tune in to the NBA only for the occasional Lakers game and the late rounds of the playoffs if the Lakers are there.
I jumped up and pumped my fist in excitement when the Lakers sealed game seven and yelled a bit. If the Cowboys or Rangers win a championship, I’ll probably cry. Even if I see them win five, I’ll probably be more than really excited on the fifth.
Put simply:
For most of you guys, the Lakers winning and losing affects me a lot less than the Mavs do y’all.
So how do you root for the Eagles with those other teams?

Hey, someone Google Map Farmington, NM to Salt Lake City, UT.
Because for me, it gives the right directions, but it shows something in Louisiana to something in South Dakota. I need to know if this is just me.
By the way, Farmington is not where I lived, but it is the northwestern most notable town in NM. It’s still slightly closer to Denver than SLC. For me, Denver was about three times closer, and was actually on the way to SLC.
Farmington is six hours from SLC

610 to Dallas.
Which was the location of the baseball and football teams most of the locals rooted for (though the Rockies were pretty close to the Rangers I’d say).
Other fun distances from Cimarron, New Mexico.
Nearest McDonalds: 40 miles (Raton, NM)
Nearest Walmart: 75 miles (Trinidad, CO)
Nearest Reasonable Airport: 200 miles (Colorado Springs, CO)
Nearest International Airport: 220 miles (Albuquerque, NM)
Phoenix, AZ: 630 miles
Los Angeles, CA: 1,000 miles
Houston, TX: 840 miles
Las Vegas, NV: 780 miles
Pullman, WA: 1,400 miles
I will say, I thought LA was closer than Houston.
On the way because we had family in Colorado Springs and it's nice to drive on major highways.
There are more direct routes that are slightly shorter that never go near Denver.

Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
I think...
a large part of it is that Southern Rap really carries a negative stigma.
I figure the rest of it is that he’s got that depressing side, he’s not afraid to kind of play with horrorcore (especially on his older stuff), and the fact he’s never really seemed to care about being a big star.

I think there was a bit of drama with this album and what it would look like when it came out. On The Show Goes On, his style on the verses sound a lot like a specific Jay-Z song, so I wonder if past/current collaborations are shading what he does.

I think we're going to see a lot of Borbon in CF.
Main OF alignment will probably be Murphy – LF, Borbon – CF, Cruz – RF. We’ll probably see some Cruz in LF and Moreland in RF when Borbon needs a break, with Murphy playing some CF. Might get a little ugly out there at times.

Did you call the hypothetical hardware store and buy a theoretical chain saw?
I think Davis is on the bench
And Murphy gets the vast majority of Hamilton PAs.
Moreland is the fourth OF and Davis is the backup 1B/3B/DH to get time when needed.

I'm trying to figure this out...we lost a LF/CF and we're bringing up a 1B/3B/DH.
No veiled criticism of JD here, just not sure how it’s going to all work.
Wondering also if this rekindles MYoung Trade Talk because CDavis does what Young does, other than 2B.

We have a lot of guys that can play multiple positions.
Davis isn’t being brought up to play every day. Just fill spots as needed. Murphy, Borbon and Cruz will be the regular OF with Moreland as the fourth OF.
It doesn’t have to be an exact replacement for Josh… especially since that doesn’t exist.

Two weeks in the season.
Some shitty at bats lately… but they’re going to give him a long look.
"I hope the image of my erect penis sears into your brain." by ab03 on Mar 24, 2011 9:13 PM CDT
Actually .564 ...which shouldn't be too surprising given what he did last year.
Was it 3 or 4 months below .579 or does it really matter at that point?

And how does Hamilton's injury change that?
They’re going to play Borbon for at least a couple of months regularly to see what’s what.
Andrus hasn’t been killing it at the plate either.
Right now Borbon is our CF and with or without Josh’s injury he was going to get plenty of time.
That doesn’t change.
"I hope the image of my erect penis sears into your brain." by ab03 on Mar 24, 2011 9:13 PM CDT
Borbon appears to be our every day CF or at least 90% of the time
but that sucks.
Marlon Byrd? BJ Upton? Cameron?

look at how fast JD swapped out 1B
C and RPs last year. It is still very early in the season. Borbon and Andrus can change things quickly. But right now I am not very optimistic on Borbon.
I'm not less optimistic than I was before the year started.
I still think he puts up a .650 OPS. If he does, he’ll play.
If he doesn’t… then maybe JD gets someone else.
His replacement isn’t in our system currently.

Did you call the hypothetical hardware store and buy a theoretical chain saw?
I'm still going to be very skeptical about him helping a division leading team
In 2011.
I would have greater expectations on Borbon being our everyday CF than Martin.
For this year.
I would have no problem being surprised on this though.

I think I bumped paint with AJM in the off-season regarding Judy and said I
didn’t think he’d put up a .600 OPS this year.
I can but I cannot believe he got picked off today in that situation.

I really don't blame him at all for that
That pickoff move was about the best I’ve ever seen from a righty. Quick, side-armed, and perfect throw.
Borbon wasn’t even leaning.
Good to know.
I never saw it… just GameDay.
I cursed under my breath watching it on my phone in a meeting.

Eh... annoying as it was
Happened to Kinsler and Murphy this year too.
It’s just magnified with Borbon because of our selective bias of remembering all the fucking stupid shit he’s done.
Panic light has not been lit.

it shouldn't rekindle any MY trade talk
if anything it should kindle some CD trade talk. IF CD cooperates. There are plenty of ABs to go around if Murphy backs up CF.

Careful...
rooting for the Spurs and having them win probably means the Mavs end up facing the Grizzlies instead of the Hornets or something like that.

I bet if the Spurs win and the Mavs win.
The Griz will win, and we’ll play Memphis who I’m also intimidated by.

"I've had people walk out on me before, but not when I was being so charming."
That's probably true
Grizz were tanking to avoid the Lakers. If the Mavs are 2 they probably beat the Clippers and face them instead.
Intimated by the Grizz, though?
Anyways, looks like they're going to hang on.
Still could fall to Sacramento tmrw. With it being the last game at Arco and all…
Poor Sacremento
You just have to wonder what would’ve happened if the NBA hadnt cheated them in that Lakers series
I don't like the matchups too much
though I’m not sure how worse they got from losing Rudy Gay.
But Zach Randolph will own the Mavs just like LMA will.

Perusing my fantasy team today, I noticed that Joe Nathan pitched but did not get a save today in a game Minnesota won.
And it was because they pitched him in the ninth inning of a tie ballgame. Their next reliever got the win after Minnesota scored in the tenth.

Good news...
The Rangers could have more help for their suddenly thin outfield on the way.
Cuban defector Leonys Martin, with whom the Rangers were linked last week, is expected to sign with the club today, a club source indicated, providing no problems arose with his physical Tuesday. Martin, 23, is expected to receive a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $15 million. Martin will receive a spot on the 40-man roster when he signs.

What an awful day yesterday was
After Borbon’s awful game I was finally starting to come around to a Murph/Hamilton/Cruz lineup. And now, the choice isn’t even there anymore. Borbon is cemented in the starting lineup and is completely undeserving. I just can’t figure out what is wrong with the kid that he makes that many fundamental mistakes. Crazy.
He basically has
rocks and garbage between the ears. There are little leaguers that are more fundamentally sound.
