Minors Thread 4/19-4/21
HIC-4-DH- Thom /Grimm (!)(!!)
MYR-5:30- Loux (!!)
FRS-7:00- Brigham (!+)
RRE-7:00- Hankins (... ya'll serious?)
Olt went 0-3 with 3 walks last night. He's just screwing with pitchers now. McBeerWalks went 2-4, 2 walks and 2 doubles. Kiker walked nor plunked anyone, per the box score, so that's probably a screwup.
Endy Chavez has an OPS of 900. Meanwhile, Chris Davis totally spit a sunflower seed way far in the dugout last night.
MYR-6:00- Erlin (!!)
RRE-7:00- Jackson (...meh.)
So, what's more impressive: Marteen's Mini-perfecto or Neil's continued AAA rampage?
April 19th
HIC-5:30- Tepesch (Postponed. Way to be, spring.)
MYR-6:00- Kelly (Olt willed the team to Victory in the 8th.)
FRS-7:00- Perez (OMG PERFECTO)
RRE-7:00- Ramirez (9 K's!)
Hat tip to Shroomer for the scheduling notes.
Parks wrote some sexy words on David Perez over at BP. He also puts even more sexy words at texasfarmreview.com/.
Tommy Mendonca is hitting the ball hard this year, at least. However, he's also K'ed 14 times compared to two walks. Tommy Mendonca is not very good at baseball, is what I'm trying to say. But I'm keeping the exact same hope I have for Bianucci up for Mendonca- he brings back a useful major league piece in July.
Let's all light a candle for Eric Hurley and continue waiting for Leo'nys.

HIC begins a 5-game series with Hagerstown today. Which means ...
it’s Harpertime. Bryce is currently at .231/.333/.333. Sounds due.
He sees Tepesch, Thompson, Grimm, Melo, and Mendez if the roto holds as is.
I think that’s in order of my confidence in the matchups, low to high.

During the HIC pre-game show the other day ...
they gave the mic to Braden Tullis to inteview Justin Grimm. Braden kept calling him, “Griimm” and asking him stupid questions. Grimm has a great Southern accent and played along expertly. Pretty funny stuff.
From the HIC radio pxp guy ...
Hi,
Just a couple of games off for him. Nothing of note and we expect him back in there soon!
Thanks!

lol, yeah, a few mins after I got that reply ... news hits everywhere about Profar to the DL
I let him know that his response was a real head-scratcher. heh
Only seven-day DL
and they could always make it retroactive to his last game played. I don’t know the specifics of the situation but there’s always the chance that it is just a few games off.
Yeah...
Durrett just said three to five more days.
What's up with this Perez-Lobo kid?

So NeRa back up to AAA after the Hurley injury?
I hate that it comes at the expense of Hurley, but I can’t say I’m not excited
>mfw
It would be kinda beans if he dominates there the whole year
And by beans, I mean semen everywhere
>mfw
That would be amazing
even if he’s got a not so pretty ERA if his peripherals are good he would shoot up our org rankings
Yeah
And I’m pretty sure he’s already a top-5 prospect anyway ever since he came to camp flashing a changeup that may end up average to go with the upper-90s heat that he can command
>mfw
Interesting to think about rankings this early on
And I wonder if Scheppers is as an automatic in the top five choice as he was before ST.

Tepesch
I know nothing about him. Was he a big sign from last years draft? The pitcher I heard the most about from last years draft was Jackson and I guess we’re waiting for short season before he goes in action
college guy we drafted in the 14th round
88-92 mph fastball to go with a curve, cutter, and change
>mfw
Interesting
he comes in with a cutter, wonder if he gets some tips from the org on improving it since alot of our guys seem to develop it
It's more of a cut-slider
somewhere in between. He added it at Mizzou against righties. In the one ST outing I saw, he was 88-92, threw strikes, and showed good command of all four pitches. It was pretty impressive and certainly didn’t look like a guy that would’ve been hit around in college.
Buckle and Grimm are noteworthy, as well
Perez-Lobo might be too.

A 70/60/50 starter has to be pretty goddamn nails
>mfw
Change
might project even higher than the CB. Scouts differ on the better sec, but I’ve seen a 70 future on the CU and a 65 on the CB. Technically, he could end up with three 60+ pitches and plus command. It has to all come together, but he’s so young that he has plenty of time to find refinement. He has special talent.
are you seriously talking about NeRa?
That sounds like Perez.
Please be talking about both of them

>mfw
by MonkeyEpoxy on Apr 19, 2011 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions
It's a plus pitch that can touch beyond that (velocity wise)
There are people who think the changeup has plus potential. When he was drafted, some scouts attached a 70 future on his CB. Ramirez has serious stuff.
Obviously, he needs overall arsenal refinement and sharper command, but this is a guy with only a few appearances above Low-A. The fact that he is more than holding his own in Triple-A tells you how good his stuff is. His projections are back on track from his pre-draft days. How often does that happen? Not very often.
Holy shnikeys.

Not really. They have helped Ramirez be more direct to the plate
They removed a lot of the rotation in his torso in his delivery. Before last year, I would have thought you were crazy to tell me Ramirez would only walk ~2.5/9ip
repeating a level may have had something to do with his 2.5/9 BB rate last year
but in his 11 (SSS) in AAA he’s at 2.45/9 and had 1 walk in his 4.2 innings in MB

I really think Frisco at worst at this point.
I think they’ll have a hard time sending him to Frisco if he turns in one more start like his first two. I also wonder who RR has to replace him in the rotation if he goes back down?
I see Frisco in his future at the very least.
But if he comes out and makes another dominant start, what do you lose by keeping him up there?

Development, potentially
But, I don’t understand why they can’t have him just work on those pitches at AA or AAA instead of Myrtle
I doubt he gets sent that low
If he gets sent down it will probably be to AA
Remember Beavan was in the same draft class and is in AAA right now and was promoted to AA in the second part of 09.
For some guys it just has to click and maybe we are seeing everything click for Ramirez this year. It wouldn’t be unprecedented for a guy, much less a Ranger pitching prospect recently, to shoot through the system starting the season in A ball and ending in AAA.

I went to the game last night
And Loux was not terribly impressive. I realize I’m just a fan and by no means a scout…it seems like he knows how to pitch, but his stuff just wasn’t that impressive. He was throwing some meatballs up there and getting hit hard (and the Kinston Indians SUCK). It’s interesting to see the comments on his line (below), showing you can’t just go by that. I was hoping to be impressed and was not.
Olt looked really good…he missed a couple hard hit balls that ABeltre would have had, but seemed to have a good approach at the plate (the Indians pitcher, Clayton Cook, was dealing last night – maybe why Loux didn’t seem impressive to me).
Zaneski is not good at throwing out runners.
Strausborger made a sweeeeeeeet diving catch in CF, and had a couple really nice hits.
Leury is tiny.
and I was hoping for some Hoying’s getting dropped on Kinston…but alas, no.
Neftali Feliz's fastball..."think Jules’ wallet in Pulp Fiction"
Well
he hit 96 last night. So I’m not sure saying his “stuff was not impressive” is fully accurate.
No doubt
That’s nice to be able to do, but if it’s straight and getting pounded by pretty poor offensive players…well, that’s where I was coming from. He may have really good stuff, it just didn’t seem like it last night.
I defer to you, you definitely know what you’re doing. His pitches were getting hit hard, most didn’t turn into hits until the bad inning…but they were squaring up on them. Maybe I was just disappointed, I wanted to see some dominance (I’m a homer, what can I say).
Neftali Feliz's fastball..."think Jules’ wallet in Pulp Fiction"
That's surprising
and encouraging. Can’t imagine he works anywhere near that regularly, but nice to know he has it in him.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
Myrtle Beach's top four starters have a combined
K/BB ratio of 53/13 in 48.1 IP so far, 4 HR allowed and a WHIP virtually at 1.1… Thats some pretty sweet looking numbers and it doesn’t even include Neil Ramirez who started as their number 1.
"I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." The JeDi
The entire staff is pretty impressive so far
Tops in the league in runs allowed, ERA, Ks, H/9, and 2nd in K/9.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
saw this in today's Frisco game notes
Texas owns the best minor league record (33-18) so far this season. The Athletics are only percentage points behind the Rangers at 34-19, with the Dodgers a half-game back at 34-20.
The McCourt debacle makes me sad
Dodgers’ ownership should not be an embarrassment to MLB.

Something to keep in mind when looking at HR allowed...
Myrtle Beach is a (pretty ridiculous, iirc) pitchers park.
In the first part of the Hickory DH
Grimm: 6 IP | 5 H | 5 R | 4 ER | 5 BB | 5 K
Skole: 1-4, K
Deglan: 0-2, BB, 0K
and for curious people, Bryce Harper went 1-2 with a dong and a walk
>mfw
Loux
4 IP | 5 H | 1 R | 0 ER | 2 BB | 5 K | 5-1 GO-AO
So, I don’t know much about Loux’s stuff and what not, but he does get a good number of Ks and a ton of ground balls.
>mfw
The good news is Thompson only gave up 1 hit and had 5 SO....don't read any further if you wantto stay positive
3.1 IP | 1 H | 4 R | 3 ER | 6 BB | 5 SO
He also had 2 wild pitches.
I just tried that.
I think it fixed the z button – so yay. But … IE has a default zoom setting. On my monitor with Vista I really need to set the zoom to 125% to be able to read text comfortably. IE allows me to set it up that way and looks great. But Firefox evidently doesn’t do that. You can zoom but you can’t set every tab and session to a default size, as IE allows you to do. So, Firefox would be fine if I could see it as well as IE.
default zoom level work well..

why do multiple people ALWAYS ask this question when I mention I use IE?
… and you can’t just say “cause Microsoft is evil”
I have 3 or 4 work related sites that are IE mandatory, or else I'd never use it.
Also, I upgrayyyed to IE9 recently…it was a downgrade for me, overall. Sigh…

I’m gonna just cuss ’em out.
ease up, SeaBass!
Don’t know if you saw my comment in the video thread…but I was checking your work out last night.
If you can, try and put some more stuff up, homey.

does anyone know why Tanner Roark and Evan Reed aren't pitching for their teams yet?
injuries?
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Reed
Tommy John surgery after just one appearance last year. Roark had an injury over the offseason and he’s just now getting back into facing hitters at extended. I think he’s supposed to be back soon.
Brad Holman on MB pregame radio -
1 – MB staff thoughts? consistent bunch, be aggressive, attack hitters, wind blows in, air’s heavy so attack hitters – I know these guys from Hickory
2 – Worked for Boeing after ML career – whassup wit dat? 50/60 hours per week job, get home and fall asleep every night, Boeing laid him off after 9/11, so got back into the game and is very happy
3 – coached with Mariners, Pirates now w/Texas – how is Texas’ philosophy different than the other clubs? Rangers/Danny Clark – treat kids as individuals, “meeting where there at” – upper mgmt not as hands-on here as his previous stops – let him do his thang
4 – how do you prep a starter for a cool wet day like today? can’t go thru motions, let ‘em know it won’t be easy, gotta beat the other pitcher so go do it
5 – Went to HS with Barry Sanders, or something like that – fun to watch him run the football

“It’s a tremendous story!” Servais exclaimed. "He’s the only pitcher I’ve ever seen that has been able to change his arm action.
Does anyone know what is meant by change his arm action?
Promote Mike Olt to Round Rock!
Actually wanted to comment on that in the morning thread.
I was also confused as to what he’s referring to specifically.
I think he shortened his arm action.
I think in that article or another, they talked about his arm action used to be pretty long when coming up in the back, and this contributed to his problems with accuracy. Now, I don’t have a clue what that means.
This
(I just read this a few days ago, don’t remember where)
He used to bring the ball very far behind his back, which made his windup too long, and also caused mechanical/release point consistency issues. He now has a shorter load phase to his windup, which serves to lessen the shoulder strain and improve repeatability of his mechanics.

JC did a great job!
If we had that level of insight and research in the radio booth every night I’d listen to as many RR games as possible. That was awesome!
Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

There's a big difference in their walk rates, though
Olt has a minor league career BB rate of 13.4% vs. a K rate of 24.4% (too high for my taste). Mendonca’s BB rate is just 6.2%, with a career K rate of 28.2%. Yikes. Olt really needs to cut down that K rate a bit, but he’s still walking at a very healthy clip.

NeRa goes today with Perez tomorrow. As long as these guys stay pitching on the same day or one day apart I think we should do new threads for their starts.
Did anyone watch the Frisco game on TXA 21 yesterday?
If you want me to cut and post short elements from the game, I can use my station privileges to make that happen. I’m looking for funny moments with JCole, as well as prospect goodness.

Goldsmith kept calling Mendonca "Bianucci" during one AB.
I’ve wondered if JC was sitting there wondering how to react. “Should I correct TV boy here? Should I call him Bianucci, too? I’m confused!”
