Minors Thread 4/19-4/21

HIC-4-DH- Thom /Grimm (!)(!!)
MYR-5:30- Loux (!!)
FRS-7:00- Brigham (!+)
RRE-7:00- Hankins (... ya'll serious?)

Olt went 0-3 with 3 walks last night. He's just screwing with pitchers now. McBeerWalks went 2-4, 2 walks and 2 doubles. Kiker walked nor plunked anyone, per the box score, so that's probably a screwup.

Endy Chavez has an OPS of 900. Meanwhile, Chris Davis totally spit a sunflower seed way far in the dugout last night.

Star-divide

HIC-5:30- Tepesch (!)

MYR-6:00- Erlin (!!)

FRS- Off :(

RRE-7:00- Jackson (...meh.)

So, what's more impressive: Marteen's Mini-perfecto or Neil's continued AAA rampage?

April 19th

HIC-5:30- Tepesch (Postponed. Way to be, spring.)

MYR-6:00- Kelly  (Olt willed the team to Victory in the 8th.)

FRS-7:00- Perez (OMG PERFECTO)

RRE-7:00- Ramirez  (9 K's!)

Hat tip to Shroomer for the scheduling notes.

Parks wrote some sexy words on David Perez over at BP. He also puts even more sexy words at texasfarmreview.com/

Tommy Mendonca is hitting the ball hard this year, at least. However, he's also K'ed 14 times compared to two walks. Tommy Mendonca is not very good at baseball, is what I'm trying to say. But I'm keeping the exact same hope I have for Bianucci up for Mendonca- he brings back a useful major league piece in July.

Let's all light a candle for Eric Hurley and continue waiting for Leo'nys.

I think that’s in order of my confidence in the matchups, low to high.

During the HIC pre-game show the other day ...

they gave the mic to Braden Tullis to inteview Justin Grimm. Braden kept calling him, “Griimm” and asking him stupid questions. Grimm has a great Southern accent and played along expertly. Pretty funny stuff.

And I’m pretty sure he’s already a top-5 prospect anyway ever since he came to camp flashing a changeup that may end up average to go with the upper-90s heat that he can command

Interesting to think about rankings this early on

And I wonder if Scheppers is as an automatic in the top five choice as he was before ST.

he comes in with a cutter, wonder if he gets some tips from the org on improving it since alot of our guys seem to develop it

by Salman on Apr 19, 2011 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

It's more of a cut-slider

somewhere in between. He added it at Mizzou against righties. In the one ST outing I saw, he was 88-92, threw strikes, and showed good command of all four pitches. It was pretty impressive and certainly didn’t look like a guy that would’ve been hit around in college.

Change

might project even higher than the CB. Scouts differ on the better sec, but I’ve seen a 70 future on the CU and a 65 on the CB. Technically, he could end up with three 60+ pitches and plus command. It has to all come together, but he’s so young that he has plenty of time to find refinement. He has special talent.

>mfw

by MonkeyEpoxy on Apr 19, 2011 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

It's a plus pitch that can touch beyond that (velocity wise)

There are people who think the changeup has plus potential. When he was drafted, some scouts attached a 70 future on his CB. Ramirez has serious stuff.

Obviously, he needs overall arsenal refinement and sharper command, but this is a guy with only a few appearances above Low-A. The fact that he is more than holding his own in Triple-A tells you how good his stuff is. His projections are back on track from his pre-draft days. How often does that happen? Not very often.

Not really. They have helped Ramirez be more direct to the plate

They removed a lot of the rotation in his torso in his delivery. Before last year, I would have thought you were crazy to tell me Ramirez would only walk ~2.5/9ip

I went to the game last night

And Loux was not terribly impressive. I realize I’m just a fan and by no means a scout…it seems like he knows how to pitch, but his stuff just wasn’t that impressive. He was throwing some meatballs up there and getting hit hard (and the Kinston Indians SUCK). It’s interesting to see the comments on his line (below), showing you can’t just go by that. I was hoping to be impressed and was not.
Olt looked really good…he missed a couple hard hit balls that ABeltre would have had, but seemed to have a good approach at the plate (the Indians pitcher, Clayton Cook, was dealing last night – maybe why Loux didn’t seem impressive to me).
Zaneski is not good at throwing out runners.
Strausborger made a sweeeeeeeet diving catch in CF, and had a couple really nice hits.
Leury is tiny.
and I was hoping for some Hoying’s getting dropped on Kinston…but alas, no.

No doubt

That’s nice to be able to do, but if it’s straight and getting pounded by pretty poor offensive players…well, that’s where I was coming from. He may have really good stuff, it just didn’t seem like it last night.
I defer to you, you definitely know what you’re doing. His pitches were getting hit hard, most didn’t turn into hits until the bad inning…but they were squaring up on them. Maybe I was just disappointed, I wanted to see some dominance (I’m a homer, what can I say).

This

(I just read this a few days ago, don’t remember where)

He used to bring the ball very far behind his back, which made his windup too long, and also caused mechanical/release point consistency issues. He now has a shorter load phase to his windup, which serves to lessen the shoulder strain and improve repeatability of his mechanics.

Olt has a minor league career BB rate of 13.4% vs. a K rate of 24.4% (too high for my taste). Mendonca’s BB rate is just 6.2%, with a career K rate of 28.2%. Yikes. Olt really needs to cut down that K rate a bit, but he’s still walking at a very healthy clip.
