Minors Thread 4/24...and beyond!
Today:
AAA: Neil Ramirez-1:05pm
AA: Wilfredo Boscan-5:00pm
Hi-A: Ryan Kelly (who?)-1:30pm
Lo-A: off
*randoms*
MOLT: 351/.457/.614!!!
In fact, MOLT is 5th in the Carolina League in batting average, 3rd in OBP, 6th in SLG, and 2nd in OPS at 1.071. It seems as if Professor Parks' prediction of Olt seeing Frisco by the ASB are on track.
Skole: .276/.354/.345
Coach Joe!: In his last ten high-A starts, Wieland has a 1.56 ERA with eight walks and 56 strikeouts in 56 innings, and opponents are hitting a meager .222/.309/.314 during that span.
Jurickson Profar was activated off the DL but didn't play yesterday.

Make that two Minor League starts, two seven-inning complete games for Kevin Millwood.
His composite line thus far:

I think MOlt is 3/5 with 2 doubles since I noted his cold streak in the GDT yesterday.
lesson learned: don’t taunt the MOlt
He's just a leader board hog.
Tied for 11th.

Yep
definitely too much, though, at least he’s walking at a very healthy rate.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
quick math shows that between college and Spokane he Ks almost once a game
so, yeah – 16 ks in 15 games – seems to be his thang
Yeah, I'm less than concerned about him being a TTO guy
Rather than a Mendonca/Davis 2 True Outcome guy.

Just noticed something ...
you know the color guy who sounds like a PBA rodeo announcer? It’s this guy.
Sounds like a great play from Gentry got Ramirez out of the 2nd.
Gentry made a sliding catch in LF and doubled off the runner at 1st.
Sounds like Ramirez is really having trouble finding the strikezone right now.
It will me interesting to see how he responds.
Shit, 3 walks already
:(

Gameday makes it all appear close
Who knows how accurate it is though. If they are close, it seems like he got a little shook up from the HR and is trying to get people to chase without getting ahead of them first.
Who knows.
It makes it hard to pitch if you don’t get the call on the edges. I understand not wanting to put the ball over the middle to get ahead. Who knows whether he’s getting squeezed or not though.
Per Scott Lucas the zone is tiny.
scottrlucas Scott Lucas
Neil Ramirez not as sharp today (and dealing with a tiny K zone). FB mostly 90-91 in 3rd. 3 H, 3 BB, 3 R in 3 IP.
Ramirez responded nicely in the 4th
He got 3 quick outs on 7 pitches. Has anyone heard any velo readings besides what Lucas said, 90-91?
Ramirez is done, Beau Jones on for his 1st AAA appearance.
5 IP | 3 H | 3 R | 3 ER | 3 BB | 3 SO | 1 HR
From the Frisco blog-notes:
Here’s an interesting note: the RoughRiders have only three men listed as outfielders, and one of those (Mike Bianucci) has only made three starts in the outfield. The rest of his 12 starts have been in the designated hitter slot. On the flip side, there are six active infielders and two infielders on the disabled list. One of those listed infielders—Jonathan Greene—has played some left to make up for this unbalance.
Just waiting around for Leonys Martinez’ paperwork to get done?
Has Bianucci been DH'ing?

How long before
we see Erlin, Wieland or Ross in Frisco? Pimental and Boscan seem ready to go to the bullpen if they want a chance to move up in the orginization.
The promotions likely wont start until mid May to June
Of course if someone in RR gets hurt for a extended period it could open the door for a round of promotions.

Especially Decker plus Blanks is a ML hitter.
Cliché as that sounds, this should be a good learning experience for Marteen
no ones talking about this?
Brilliant start by Erlin, might be one of the best starts of the season for any MiLB pitcher. Erlin has been just as impressive at high A so far as he was in A ball last year.
"I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." The JeDi
He has been very impressive.
So have Ross and Wieland. I wonder how much of it has to do with improved performance and how much has to do with moving from BAK to MB?
Erlin has only allowed 12 hits in his 22 IP, but has given up 3 doubles and 3 HR in those 12 hits. I have to think those XBH numbers will come back down some, but he will start to give up more hits overall.
Erlin is always awesome
Career pitching line:
140.2 IP 160K (29.1%) 21BB (3.8%) Damn, that’s sexy. I’d like to see the ground ball rate a tick higher, but that’s getting picky.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
Not to put too much pressure on him
but seriously, that’s extremely Cliff Lee-esque… Lee is more of a FB pitcher too, with those K/BB rates, it doesn’t matter
"I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." The JeDi
We'll have to see how it plays in the upper levels
we’re still in A ball, after all, but you have to love how he’s doing so far.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
Think he's too polished for A+ ball to be much of a challenge?
To be fair he has been kinda homer happy so far (only 22 IP) and that’s with 3 of his 4 games being in Myrtle Beach

MiLB.com article
“These guys are a lot better [at] hitting mistakes,” Erlin said. “If you leave a ball over the plate, there’s a good chance it’s going to be hit pretty hard. I just have to keep fine-tuning on location and stuff like that because the hitters are just going to get better.”
He seems like the perfect canidate to add a cutter when he reaches
the upper levels to negate some of his HR tendecies. As long as he keeps his command and swing and miss pitches, it will just come down to him making adjustments and staying healthy.
"I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." The JeDi
that's what Parks said
Said he wouldn’t be surprised if Erlin adds a 2-seamer and a cutter down the road so he can play with batters with 3 different fastballs, the change, and the curve

So far today
Grimm: 5 ip | 3 H | 0 R | 1 BB | 8 SO
Profar: 2-2, sac
Mendonca: 1-1, 2B. His AVG is up to .344 and is slugging almost .600. I know it’s not sustainable with his SO numbers, but it’s fun to watch as it’s happening.
nice, Skole still looks solid enough... Just needs to add some pop
but his batting eye and plate awareness seem pretty solid and his hit tool seems to be there. Haven’t heard any reports about his defense though.

for some reason, I like Strausborger
he seems like a kid who could just keep coming through the system thanks to some solid tools. Even if he just Kevin Mahar’s it and gets a quick cup of coffee (another kid from an Indiana state school), that’s not bad for an 18th rounder.

Frisco mgr Buechele tossed in 9th for arguing overturned homer. Riders lose 6-5. Brawl btwn fans & players after game. 3 fans in cuffs.
who hit the overturned HR?
and at first I thought this happened in Frisco and I was stunned b/c that seems like the last place in the world a brawl between fans and players would happen, then I saw it occured in San Antonio and I wasn’t so stunned

Erlin's line through 22 innings is pretty fuckin ridiculous
22 IP | 14 H | 7 ER | 3 BB | 26 K | 3 HR
The only thing I’m not a fan of is the 1.23 HR/9. I wish I knew where to get batted ball data for minor leaguers so I could get a HR/FB percentage
>mfw
I think it's around 10% right now for erlin
Firstinning.com has it listed as HR/air if that is what you are looking for. It is about double his rate of 5% from last season.
Right, I keep forgetting how awesome FirstInning.com is
10% seems like it would be pretty close to average

Anyone know what went down in Round Rock tonight?
I’m writing the Brewers minor league report, got curious about what was up with RR’s pitching as one does, and noticed that the manager and one of the pitchers got ejected in the 4th. What happen?

Here's what Scott Lucas has to say about it:
Seth McClung was summarily tossed in the 4th for hitting Koby Clemens with a first-pitch fastball. An irate manager Bobby Jones quickly received the same treatment.
Much less eventful than the RoughRiders melee.
"you are now the chris nolan of LSB posters." -TideNtexas 4/21/11
thanks
The box seemed to indicate that it was a brushback rather than an HBP—I thought Clemens singled off of Mobley—but, yeah, exactly what I thought happened; McClung gets used as the designated headhunter more than he really is emotionally fit for. (Possibly because his control issues allow some plausible deniability.)
great outing!

Ryan Rodebaugh has been nails so far for the HIC pen.
JC wrote about him in ST –
Rodebaugh is a full-time reliever in professional ball. He features a three-pitch mix that includes a 90-92 mph fastball that touches up to 93 and two offspeed pitches in a low-80s slider and changeup. The prospect hasn’t thrown the changeup much, as he explains below, but the pitch flashed good sinking action when he used it at fall instructional leagueJust turned 21.
Mendonca is 3-4 so far
AVG up to .361. Again, I know it’s not sustainable(BABIP of .425 coming into today), but still enjoying it while it lasts.

You kind of ruined the whole “enjoying it while it lasts” part for me. lol. I understand that Mendonca shouldn’t really even be considered a prospect with his ridiculous K rates, but I can still appreciate the hot streak that he is on now.
