2011 NFL Draft (Day 1)
I had a nightmare last night. The Cowboys shocked everyone and took a TE with their 1st round pick.
Goose's final MOck:
1. Carolina - Cam Newton
2. Denver - Von Miller
3. Buffalo - Marcell Dareus
4. Cincy - A.J. Green
5. Arizona - Patrick Peterson
6. Cleveland - Julio Jones
7. San Fran - Blaine Gabbert
8. Tennessee - Jake Locker
9. Dallas - Tyron Smith
10. Washington - Christian Ponder
11. Houston - Aldon Smith
12. Minnesota - Andy Dalton
13. Detroit - Nick Fairley
14. St. Louis - Mark Ingram
15. Miami - Mike Pouncey
16. Jacksonville - Ryan Kerrigan
17. New England - Cam Jordan
18. San Diego - Corey Liuget
19. New York Giants - Nate Solder
20. Tampa Bay - Robert Quinn
21. KC - Gabe Carimi
22. Indy - Anthony Castonzo
23. Philly - Jimmy Smith
24. New Orleans - Adrian Clayborn
25. Seattle - Prince Amukamara
26. Baltimore - JJ Watt
27. Atlanta - Phil Taylor
28. New England - Danny Watkins
29. Chicago - Marvin Austin
30. New York Jets - Derrick Sherrod
31. Pittsburgh - Cameron Heyward
32. Green Bay - Aaron Williams
Kiper: Cameron Jordan, DE, Cal
A shift from the previous mock, where I had the Cowboys targeting a corner. This is a team that needs to find solutions on front seven and Jordan offers a lot of versatility. Think about lining up a dynamic pass-rusher who can take on double-teams as a 3-4 defensive end and forcing the offense to make a decision on doubling him or DeMarcus Ware. There are questions in the Dallas secondary, but we know so much of what gets exposed down the field starts with what you're not doing up front. I can see Dallas moving off this pick, but I like Jordan if the Cowboys stay put.
Mayock: Tyron Smith, OT, USC
I think the Cowboys would like to trade down here, but this kid is talented. Dallas can plug him in at right tackle, and he upgrades the youth and athleticism of the offensive line.
McShay: JJ Watt, DE, Wisconsin
Watt's size, strength, athletic ability and motor make him a good fit as a 5-technique in the Cowboys' 3-4 defensive scheme.

I wish I'd followed this more the past month or so
I’m going to be confused as fuck the rest of the day.
Yeah that mock seems a little QB happy

Yeah, I don't get that either.
Nothing from his game has impressed me. Last good QB drafted out of FSU – Weinke?

I'm very excited
to find out where the Cowboys trade down to.

no
too much rawness there. I don’t want to take a chance on such a premium pick…
I actually would probably take Pouncey over Smith.
But, it probably will be the pick if Dallas goes OT
read that Dallas has a higher grade on Tyron Smith than they did for Russell Okung last year.
Jimmy over Prince?
Anybody who does that deserves what they get. And i hope it’s the Eagles.

Yeah.
Though Jones with the Pats or Falcons is also a bit intimidating.

Can the Falcons really afford to go with a WR in the 1st round, given the needs they have on D?

Well,
they don’t have the ammo to get up to the 9. They probably need another year of a defense heavy draft, but man…that offense could be something with Roddy, Turner, Gonzalez and Julio Jones.

that they don’t think his work ethic will match his talent…
Interesting
I could see that i guess. Seems like the kid is kind of a jackass.

I'll give you that.
But Fairley’s fall has been pretty substantial. He was considered the #1 overall as soon as the National Championship game was over, and now he’s been shown in the mid to late first.
Only other person I know that took a plunge like that was Brady Quinn.

His size will necessitate a move to safety by age 25.
His intelligence (Wunderlic of 8) casts some doubts on his ability to learn to do so. He’s an awesome kick returner though.

Until he weighs 230 pounds in 3 years
One knee or foot injury and he loses that speed you have yourself a worthless player. I also think he’s a questionable tackler.
Now let me clarify: If Dallas ended up with PP at 9 I would immediately get on board with it. But I’m a homer.

3rd down? The guy is a tailor-made edge rusher in the 3-4 and you’re talking about putting him in a scheme that neutralizes his greatest strength—rushing the passer.

Mile High Report's take...
Von Miller is an exceptional athlete who will play the SAM linebacker position with the Broncos, and will start immediately. He is the kind of player you can build a defense around, and one of the four players I would be happy with the Broncos taking tonight.
Miller is a rare combination of size, speed, instincts, athleticism, and pass rush ability. He can cover tight ends, and he can take down quarterbacks. The only player in the NFL who has a comparable skill set is Clay Matthews in Green Bay. Multiple scouts have told me Miller is a lock to be the NFL’s Defensive rookie of the year.
Who have been the SAMs in Fox's 4-3 D over the last decade?
I don’t know off hand and I’m too lazy to look it up; but I’m willing to bet they didn’t hit the opposing QBs very much.

Mayock projects it, and doesn't see a problem...
Everyone thinks this pick will be Marcell Dareus, but look at the big picture for the Broncos. Defensive tackle is a strength of this draft, so the Broncos take Miller, the best edge rusher, and then come back and get a defensive tackle with their next pick.
New kickoff rules screw him out of doing anything in the return game, ya think?

9. Dallas Cowboys — This is where things could get interesting. If the first trade is not at No. 5 then it could very well happen here, and while both organizations are close to airtight when we put the pieces together we begin to think the relationship between Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft could help lead to a deal.
The Patriots certainly have the ammunition to move up and the Cowboys might be willing to take slightly less than market value to move back. Based on the value of the picks we’re guessing New England would swap the No. 17 and 60 overall picks for the ninth pick, and while many think the Patriots would target a pass-rusher we tend to believe they would have their eye on California DE Cameron Jordan.
Dallas could afford to take a little less in the deal because it could move back to 17 and likely still get one of the three players we’ve projected to them at No. 9: USC OT Tyron Smith, Boston College OT Anthony Castonzo or Wisconsin DE J.J. Watt. That’s a good calculated risk for Jones and the Cowboys, one that would also net them an additional pick in the second round.
i want way more than that…
from all accounts, the pats really want that pick for julio jones too.
i doubt the pats toss in the secon first round pick, as awesome as that would be tho. tough to tell. just depends on how bad the pats really want that 9 pick, along with anyone else who wants it too.

Grieve: The Yanks have struggled so far. - Lewin: Yeah, cry me a bag of money.
ElectricOkra.com
I don't know about that
He’s a rocket-armed statue. More and more teams are moving away from those types of QBs and towards players who can at least move around in the pocket and avoid the rush. Not saying Mallett can’t be successful, but he’s going to have to have a good line in front of him to have a chance.

Everything I’ve heard about him is that he can’t avoid a rush, has trouble setting his feet if he doesn’t have a clean pocket, etc. He does have the best arm of any QB in the draft, and I don’t think it’s particularly close.

Interesting
Judge denied NFL’s request for a stay of her ruling to lift the lockout. Of course the NFL is appealing, but if they lose the season would take place under 2010 rules, meaning any player with less than 6 years of service is an RFA, not a normal free agent. That would take a lot of interesting names off the board…

Probably not
But I’m still not sold Huff is coming here. Either way, though, FS is one of the biggest needs on this team along with the O-Line. I’d be fine with Smith and Moore in the first two rounds, but if we somehow move up to 5 and get Peterson and Moore, I’d be ecstatic
If you take Peterson without giving up the 2
you need to go RT in the 2nd.

Depends who's available
If someone like Sherrod or Watkins is dropping, then yes. But otherwise, I think you have to go with the best player available at a position of need like FS. To me, though, the thought of having Moore, Peterson, and hopefully a rejuvinated Jenkins in the secondary would be huge for a long time

I don’t get it. Not even a little bit. You’re decreasing the odds that you get the person you like for this…and it always makes me nervous when they zone in on a player who should go lower and decide to try to game the system. I’m just less confident in them being able to identify talent well enough to make it harder on themselves like that.

9. In 1968, the Cowboys chose David McDaniels in part for his outstanding time in the 40. When he was unable time and again to match his speedy effort, the Cowboys did some investigating and determined McDaniels had run 38 yards instead of 40.
So they traded him to Philly.

Now, this is awesome...
Like many hockey players drafted in the 11th round of the 1974 NHL Draft, Taro Tsujimoto never actually made it to the big time. But unlike the other players drafted with him, Tsujimoto didn’t exist.
His name is in the record books because of Punch Imlach, the former general manager of the Buffalo Sabres. Imlach was so fed up with tedious late rounds of the draft that he decided to poke some fun at the league. He pulled a Japanese name from the local phone book and made up an imaginary team. Then, he simply told NHL President Clarence Campbell that his draft pick was Taro Tsujimoto of the Tokyo Katanas. Sure, no one had ever heard of Tsujimoto, but that didn’t stop the NHL from making the selection official.
Several weeks later, Imlach revealed his prank, but Sabres fans didn’t care. For years after the draft, Buffalo crowds would break into chants, demanding "We want Taro!"
Not crazy about it.

It’s “buzz” worthy that the Cowboys have spoken to New England about moving down to spot No. 17 so the Pats could get up to take Cam Jordan from Cal. And there’s also plenty of talk about what might happen if LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson started to slip.
The Browns, who own pick No. 6, are said to be interested in moving down, however, according to the trade value chart, it would cost the Cowboys at least a third-round pick to move up three spots to land the big cornerback.
The Cowboys 9th overall and 3rd rounder are worthy enough for Peterson. Period.

Michael Smith just said that NE doesn't even like any of the 5 technique guys at 17.
That sure sounds like bullshit.
Are they going to swoop in to take Watt after we trade out of the 9?

OK, NFL
Now that we know the Panthers are taking Newton, let’s knock off the nonsense- announce the damn pick at 7:01, then put the next team on the clock. No reason it should take any longer.

Ugh
After getting real into the NBA lately, I hate returning to the non talent based sport.
Blackie Sherrod once wrote the great quote on the NFL draft, “anticipation is greater than realization”. Anticipation that Von Miller is going to be a stud is much more satisfying, than if he ever actually does become a stud.
99% of these guys are not going to pan out and even the 1% that do, it will be boring.
Quick, name the ten best LB’s in the NFL. I cant. I cant even name the best. So why do we think Von Miller is going to be a stud? There are no studs in the NFL.
Terrence Newman was regarded as a shutdown corner in the draft. Roy Williams was a stud coming out of the draft. Now, they’re just two faceless, average players in a league where everybody is average. That’s the same thing going to happen to 98% of these guys.
That said, dont get me wrong, I’ll play along in this thread and pretend it matters.
BTW
As a typical supporter of non-politically correct players like Tebow, VY, or Cam, all the players LSB hates because I like them, I did find it interesting to find a couple months old video on ESPN where they were debating (I think Skip Bayless was involved) whether Cam Newton should be a late first round pick, or second round. Skip’s best argument was that indeed, he felt Cam grudgingly deserved late first round pick status.
Kind of funny now he’s #1 overall. LSB pwned.
Also
Interesting blast from the past, Tony Mandarich came up on Mike and Mike the other day, prompting me to google around on him a little and relive some memories.
Guy was probably one of my earliest football memories…

Found an interesting youtube where are they now type vid on him…he still looks pretty built. Then again I wasnt aware he played as late as 98.

But lets play the game of “nobody but Jerry ever makes bad draft picks in the NFL, lets only disect his failings, with no teams to compare with, because all other teams draft perfectly, and nobody else passes on the guys Jerry does, except 17 teams”
Yeah, you're right....
years of mediocrity prove that he’s a great GM….what, 1 playoff win in the 2000s?
I really wish you would take off your blinders and go back and look at the draft over the last several years….his track record is pathetic…

FWIW
Football Outsiders has Romo and Ryan being about equal in DVOA last year (value per play, basically), with Romo’s 2009 being way better than either player’s 2010, and his 2008 being a bit worse. So it seems the advanced stats have them about equal, with Romo perhaps a bit better. But then again, Ryan is a lot younger, so I’d call it basically even.
This is a lot more reasonable
than “Ryan is better at throwing the football to his receivers, and I say so because I might be a scout.”
I admit I would take Ryan down the line because of his youth and potential. But now? Bleargh.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

Possibly relevant:
FO also has Atlanta with the 3rd bess pass blocking line in Adjusted Sack Rate in 2010, with Dallas at 11.
Caveat: I’m certainly no expert on advanced NFL stats, so take these with a grain of salt. I’m not sure exactly how reliable they are/how much they tell you.
Not as much as baseball stats.
Just think of them as having much higher error bars.

That was my general intuition
It seems like it’s going to be pretty hard to come up with a good set of stats for football or hockey. Baseball and basketball lend themselves a lot more to statistical analysis.
They're getting better,
but I think it’s more appropriate to look at FO as a set of interesting relevant principles than it is to consider them a complete system that you can use to evaluate the true talent level of players.

went back and looked at the 2007 draft, since we're now far enough out to judge it a bit.
And that was just a horrendous draft for quarterbacks. I don’t see one QB that has playing significant snaps with his team, aside from perhaps Kevin Kolb.
This draft feels the same way.
