Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

Friday a.m. Rangers things

Rough 9th inning for the Rangers last night.  Of course, it is hard to win games when you only score two runs...

Anthony Andro writes that Texas fell because of missed opportunities, errors and mental breakdowns.

Randy Jennings writes that Pedro Strop's performance could be look at as a bright spot from yesterday.

Richard Durrett says the team wants to play better on the road.

Gil Lebreton says the Rangers bats are wasting good outings by the starting pitchers.

Evan Grant writes that Neftali Feliz has started throwing, and the Rangers are optimistic he'll be ready to go when he's eligible to be activated on May 6.

The S-T's notes talk about Mike Napoli's performance at TBIA and the upcoming series with Oakland.

Way too untrustworthy. It was great he was able to bear down and get out of the jam but he never should have put himself in that spot. Come in throw strikes damnit

Right

He wouldn’t have needed to “bear down and get out of a jam” if he hadn’t gotten himself into that jam in the first place.

Yes, it was just outstanding.

The superstations really helped a lot of teams. Now it has gone to networking. But I wonder if the Cardinals would be nearly as successful without their blowtorch, KMOX, and Jack Buck. And for what, about the first 15 years, the Rangers had WBAP. Life was a little different back then. Radio was a huge reason for baseball being as successful as it was.

Inserting preemptive cool story, bro right here....

On my honeymoon, we were in Corpus Christi….we only got local tv stations and it was the night that Nolan was going for the 5000th strike out. I went to our car, put it on 820 and drove around until I got a faint signal.

Actually got to hear the strike out and, as a bonus, still hear about it from my wife almost 22 years later.

I am in Stephenville and I can't even pick up a good station that carries the Rangers.

I have been able to pick up mediocre signal from AM 710 out Amarillo as often as I can get a mediocre signal from 1460. I have even picked up a Kansas City Royals broadcast and not even be able to get the Rangers. If it is after dark, I don’t even bother checking AM stations because they don’t seem to work at all after dark anymore.

Oh, this is the spot where everyone else puts long, annoying stories that take up the entire page.

AM stations have to cut their broadcast power at sundown

So they go from having a minute signal strength to slightly more than zero strength at sundown?

Oh, this is the spot where everyone else puts long, annoying stories that take up the entire page.

by casew on Apr 29, 2011 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

So true...

One of the realities was when I worked for a station in Graham, TX, they had an FM station was because even at a less strength station, they didn’t have to reduce the signal. I think the AM station may have had to sign off at night. When I worked in Paris, Texas that is, the am station had to reduce power at sunset, by around 1/2. It was off at midnight.

by Philar on Apr 29, 2011 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Not all the AM stations do, but yeah, the smaller ones are useless at night

We have that problem with the Rangers affiliate in Abilene. You can barely pick up its signal at the Abilene city limits, much less 45 miles away here in Stamford.

If I’m not listening to XM, I generally use 710-KGNC in Amarillo like casew. Plus, they have agricultural market reports every half hour during the weekdays.

Play better on the road

Given that the Rangers one road trip was literally the worst possible combination for them (Detroit, Baltimore, New York), I’m not that worried about that.

I am worried about the team deciding to lapse into their sloppy play again. I don’t know if I should be happy that the traditional April sloppiness didn’t start until the last week or so, or if I should be worried that it may spill over this year. For a 15-11 team, or whatever they are, I feel awfully deflated…

His timing seems pretty good

It isn’t like I really like Hunter – because I doubt he could have matched any of the starters performances this last month other than Lewis’s – but this rotation just feels so shaky (even though everyone but Lewis has given some reason to be satisfied). By the time Hunter is ready, I’m fairly certain someone will be ready to go (Ogando being too exposed, Lewis needing to hit the DL, Holland or Harrison ( :( ) continuing to stumble…).

Tommy Hunter (groin) threw between 40 and 45 pitches in live batting practice Monday without any issue.

Good news. Hunter is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday or Thursday in Arlington before heading to Arizona for an outing in an extended spring training game. Barring any setbacks, a minor league rehab start should come next. We’re likely looking at a late-May return. Apr 25, 6:35 PM

If the games were still on 820, I’d probably have put a big fat antenna on my place here in San Diego, because I imagine that I’d be able to listen to at least half the games even this far away.

But

…most of those “sister stations” are equally weak-assed and shitty. I live west of San Antonio and 760 AM “The Ticket” barely reaches here—and only at night. That is if they are not worshipping the Spurs that night, or the Arena Football team, or the Jr. High Girls track meet.

by Atticus F on Apr 29, 2011 10:57 AM CDT reply actions

I would guess the reasons they went to KRLD was because...

they felt they could make more money. I used to be in radio, and I am wondering what stations charged them to be a part of the radio network, if the Rangers solely make money from the advertising, or the stations also make money from the advertising. I never worked at a big sports affiliate station to know excactly how that worked.

But I know the Rangers make more money on advertising, perhaps a percentage split with affiliate. And, the more affiliates they have, the more they are likely to charge advertisers. General ratings on KRLD and their FM station or stations may come into play, versus WBAP. It is a fairly complicated issue that I wish I knew more about.
