Wilson: Rangers claim Aguero off of waivers
Per Jeff Wilson, the Texas Rangers have claimed RHP Ramon Aguero off of waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates and optioned him to AAA, with Omar Beltre moving to the 60 day d.l.
I know nothing about Aguero, but I'm going to say for now, based solely on a WAG, that he's a reliever, throws hard, has command issues, and is a converted outfielder.
I will now go look up Aguero, and update this once I figure out who he is and what he does.
UPDATE -- Here is Aguero's B-R page. He is a reliever, he appears to have command issues, but he's not a converted outfielder.
Not sure what the story on his fastball is.

Stuff
Plus-plus FB; flashes plus slider; command issues. Late-inning reliever type with overpowering FB in bursts. Good pickup.
Is it iced tea?

I disagree
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Slider
It currently grades around 40/45 but could end up as a 50 pitch. It “flashes” plus at times, but the scouts I’ve spoken to don’t seem to think it’s consistent enough to hold a higher grade. CU had some 55 grades on it before the injury issues. FB with lots of 70s.
Perfect low-risk arm to bring into the fold. If one of the secs takes a step forward, you could have a late-inning arm in short-order. It’s a smart move.
thanks professor
sounds like a good move
I am coming for you, Mark Lowe.
You’d better run, because there will be more with me.

Also, Manny Corpas on a minor league deal
Per EG on Twitter:
Rangers sign RHP Manny Corpas, coming back from Tommy John surgery, to minor league deal. He prolly won’t pitch in 2011.
Corpas
I’ll always remember that guy from the Rockies run in 2007 – he was lights out in the 9th, flashing a just plain nasty, sinking fastball – a true, swing-and-miss FB that got tons of ground balls when hitters managed to connect
awesome.
he was also a fantasy closer of mine.

A little bit I can drum up
25 years old. 6-4 185 Dominican pitcher. Signed in 2006 but came stateside in 2008.
John Sickels gave him a Grade C and just outside of his Top 20 Pirates prospect rankings in December 2009.
Struggled in AA in 2010 and was demoted to high A.
Aguero has a power arm and throws 95-97 MPH consistently, although when he goes beyond one inning his velocity drops. He also has a workable change, which makes him tough on lefties.
Neal Huntington said “He’s got a power sink with the makings of a breaking ball and a changeup. He has a lot of the traits we’re looking for.”
The Bucs signed (Samuel) Vasquez in 2006. He had a promising couple of years in the DSL, and came stateside in 2008. The new suits did their due diligence on him, and guess what? The fireballing righty ended up being Ramon Aguero, and changed ages from 19 to 23 quicker than you can sing “Happy Birthday.”
Those blockquotes are from a November 2009 article
Also included is this tidbit:

Thought this was Kun Aguero at first
and wondered what a young Argentinian footy player was doing signing with the Rangers
Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.
At least we know he's actually 26
They’ve already caught him with a fake birth certificate and adjusted his age.

Why would the Pirates waive him
if he could just be optioned? Does he have some sort off the field issues or did they really need space on the 40 or what?
They have a bit of a logjam
Guys like Aaron Thompson, Chris Leroux, Jose Ascanio, Jeff Locke, Bryan Morris, and a few others contribute little to their active roster, but they all have some sort of appeal comparable to what Aguero does. Plus, when a guy is in his mid 20’s and feels like he’s going backwards it’s easy to get discouraged. It makes some sense for them to cut ties, and it makes good sense for another team with a spot or two of flexibility to take their shot at him. Texas could turn around and try to get him through waivers themselves in a few weeks.

I am assuming that...
…barring a big step forward in the next few weeks, Texas will put him on waivers and try to outright him in May sometime.
