Not sure.
I think it depends on the player more than anything but I haven’t been able to see much Cuban baseball outside of what everyone sees. I think that may be a good question to ask Eric Nadel, if you’re ever able to, since he sees lots of Cuban baseball compared to most of us.

Erlin
I know we all know he’s good, but after reading Cole’s article, it’s staggering how good his numbers are this year. He’s given up 17 H in 42 IP.
That's exactly what he is doing right now
What make me curious is how can he make it with fastball around 90. Dose his fastball sit at 90, topping at 91-93, or sit at 87-88, topping at 90-91? This will make big difference to his performance in upper level.
It'll help when he is throwing 3 different fastballs in the future
Hopefully. That would be beans

It's difficult to tell from the Frisco press box
It’s pretty high up for a minor league box (along with Round Rock), the radar gun in Frisco hasn’t been accurate (or even close to it) this year, and there isn’t a monitor in the box for non-TV games. I think that’s part of why they aren’t given in Frisco.

So with Perez having another superb outing tonight
I think the promotion watch is officially underway. He’s at 40 innings with a ERA around 2.25. Striking out a batter a inning and keeping the ball in the yard.
This makes now close to 160 innings all together in AA. Its getting close to the time Martin needs be looking for places in Round Rock
I'd keep him in AA until the All-Star break at the earliest
But the Rangers are generally more aggressive than I would be
>mfw
I wouldn't yet.
Control has still been an issue before tonight. It seems to come and go. I think after the last 1 1/2 years of struggles, Perez needs to enjoy some sustained success for his confidence, if nothing else.

to say that Kelly is back to the bullpen. I think they feel they need to give Boscan a shot to right the ship in the starting roto or something.

Brigham isn't going to the pen if he keeps pitching like he did today.

Brigham's ultimate role
may very well be in the bullpen, but I think the Rangers will let him continue to develop as a starter so he can work on the slider and changeup for at least the rest of this year.
I think people that don’t see these guys tend to prefer the newer toys in Erlin, Loux, and Wieland…but Brigham’s overall stuff is just as good if not better than those guys.

There is no point in moving Brigham to the bullpen right now. Maybe you have move him to the bullpen in a year or two but right now leave him in the rotation and let him develop as a starter (probably until he can’t cut it as a starter or you have a need at the ML level for a reliever).

Leave him as a starter. He is Rule 5 eligible again this winter and may very well be traded in July.

They oughta just let Erlin throw both of them
He’d allow 6-8 baserunners, max.

From JD's chat...
Comment From Wally
How is Tanner Scheppers progressing?
2:50
SportsDayDFW: Tanner’s working on his core strength and flexibility in AZ. He has a herniated disc in his back that causes a pinched nerve in his leg and leads to weakness there. Correctable, but takes time. Fortunately it was addressed in time and shouldn’t impact the health of his arm. we expect he’ll be back out relatively soon.
Also from JD...
…How about last night in Hickory? They play through the rain for 4 innings, the opponent scores in top of 13th, and they call it immediately afterwards. Rough.
Some good answers from the chat; really liked this answer about promoting Weiland and Erlin...
SportsDayDFW: They’re both in discussion for promotions. There are basically two things we look at when determining whether a guy is ready for the next level. First, has he accomplished what we set out for him? Meaning, when you look at his individual player plan, has he met the goals that were set (ie, developing a routine, mechanical adjustment, game situations, conditioning, off-field, etc). Second, is he being challenged where he is or does he need better competition to address his weaknesses? Erlin and Wieland are nearing a need for a new challenge, but there are a few specific things they’re each working on while in Myrtle.
Really detailed answer, I like also

I'm not sure he will be there at 33
Lots of teams looking at him. Good fit for Reds or Twins in first.
Twins
wow, that really fits them to a Tee.

The Twins looooove them some #3 starters who lack much projection
I think Texas should go the HS projection route with Ross or Stephenson, assuming they are on the board. Both are fantastic HS arms.
I'm about to look up Ross and Stephenson because I know nothing about them
Do you have an opinion on Michael Kelly? His delivery looks a little different. It looks like he drops his entire body and drives towards the plate? I know jack about pitching mechanics. Is that good, bad, indifferent?
I haven't seen him in person
I don’t want to look at a video clip and pronounce that his delivery is suspect. Some of the reports have mentioned his arm swing, but you have to look at the arm strength and the projection. He isn’t receiving professional instruction at his present level, so you have to assume any hitch in his delivery will be ironed out after he signs, assuming, of course, it is required. He looks very promising: Great size, room for projection, good present stuff. First-round talent.
Right now I have a ton of confidence in the Rangers staff to develop a pitcher
This is why I prefer a high projection high school arm(plus I’m a velo whore).
Happen to have seen Tyler Beede or Dillon Howard pitch?
Both pretty big guys, Beede is 6’4 180 which seems like it would be neat projection wise.

Tyler Beede
Tyler Beede
RHP / Lawrence Academy
Bats-Throws: R-R
Height/Weight: 6-4/200
Hometown: Auburn, Mass
College Commitment: Vanderbilt
Birthdate: May 23, 1993
SCOUTING PROFILE: Beede heads up one of the best groups of Massachusetts high school pitching prospects ever seen in one draft. While Beede is the premier arm of the group, RHP’s Pat Connaughton (St. John’s Prep), Adam Ravenelle (Sudbury-Lincoln HS) and John Magliozzi (Dexter HS) are all potential top 5 round arms. LHP Andrew Chin (BB & N), RHP Devin Perry (BB & N), RHP Barrett O’Neill (Ashland HS) and RHP Robert DeCosmo (Cathedral HS) all have 90+ mph fastballs and have received plenty of scouting attention as well. That talent base belies the fact that no Massachusetts high school player at any position has been picked in the first five rounds since 2003, when the Marlins selected Jeff Allison in the first round. Beede is far from the stereotypical raw arm from the region, however. His father, Walter, was a 13th round pick of the Chicago Cubs in 1981 as a first baseman and played one year of minor league ball, so baseball definitely is part of the Beede bloodlines. Most importantly, Beede has been participating in national level events since early in his sophomore season, including the 2010 Aflac All American Game, and has a polished maturity on the mound that is equal to any Sun Belt pitcher. He has a low effort delivery with good lower half use and repeats his mechanics consistently. Beede’s fastball doesn’t touch 97-98 mph like many of top high school arms seem to be doing this year but he’s a consistent 92-93 mph and will touch 94-95 occasionally. His upper 70’s curveball is a potential plus second pitch and his change up shows signs of being a plus pitch at times as well, although he understandably hasn’t used the pitch frequently. Beede’s ability to mix his pitches and throw to spots is very advanced for a high school pitcher and will enable him to be immediately successful at the next level, whether that is at Vanderbilt or in professional ball. Even though he could sneak into the back of the first round on talent, Beede is well prepared to pass on pro ball for at least three years. He transferred before his senior year from his hometown Auburn High School to Lawrence Academy, a prestigious prep school, to better prepare himself academically for Vanderbilt and is a high level student.
Projected Draft Position: Late First Round/Sandwich

Joe Ross
Joe Ross
RHP / Bishop O’Dowd HS
Bats-Throws: R-R
Height/Weight: 6-2/180
Hometown: Oakland, Calif.
College Commitment: UCLA
Birthdate: May 21, 1993
SCOUTING PROFILE: Ross is the brother of Oakland A’s righthander Tyson Ross, a second-round pick of the A’s in 2008 who also attended Bishop O’Dowd High before going on to nearby Cal-Berkeley. Aside from being righthanded and throwing a 90-plus fastball/slider combination, the two don’t resemble each other as pitchers. Tyson was a big-framed 6-foot-5, 200-pounder at the same age and threw from an extremely compact arm action that concerned scouts; almost the exact opposite is true of brother Joe’s smooth, easy arm stroke. Ross has actually been more closely linked to fellow Northern California righthander Robert Stephenson over the past year, and both should go in approximately the same area of the draft, likely between picks 25 and 40—if signability doesn’t complicate their draft status. While Ross and Stephenson are very similar physically with long-limbed and loose athletic builds, their pitching styles and present stuff are not alike, giving scouts a good opportunity to see the differences between the two and make decisions based on those evaluations. Ross has a very clean, polished delivery that he repeats effortlessly. He already has solid command of all his pitches, and there is nothing to indicate that he might have control issues in the future. His three-quarters release point creates a nice angle to the plate, and his arm is loose and easy out front. Ross’ fastball is regularly in the 91-94 mph range and while it is fairly straight at present, he has the ability to spot the pitch well, especially on the inside half of the plate to righthanded hitters. His breaking ball is a low-80s slider that has good tilt and sharpness. He continues to develop his changeup. Unlike Stephenson, Ross has struggled this spring to achieve meaningful success at the high-school level, going just 3-4, 1.20 with two saves. In 46 innings, he has walked just 12 and struck out 59.
Projected Draft Position: Late First Round / Compensation Round
Robert Stephenson
Robert Stephenson
RHP / Alhambra HS
Bats-Throws: R-R
Height/Weight: 6-3/180
Hometown: Martinez, Calif.
College commit: Washington
Birthdate: Feb. 24, 1993
SCOUTING PROFILE: For one of the rare draft years ever, the high-school talent in northern California may actually eclipse the talent in the traditionally-strong prep ranks in the southern half of the state. Stephenson is the top-rated high-school prospect in the state, though Joe Ross (No. 3 overall), a fellow NorCal righthander at Oakland’s Bishop O’Dowd High, is pretty much considered his equal and could give Stephenson a run for his money in terms of who will go off the board first. Both should be gone no later than the top 35-40 picks. While Stephenson and Ross are frequently compared because of their close geographic proximity, the better comparison to Stephenson may actually be on the other side of the country in South Carolina prep righthander Taylor Guerrieri, who is one of the top 2-3 prep righthanders in the entire draft. Stephenson has the same lean, athletic frame and should continue to fill out and get stronger over the next few years. Like Guerrieri, Stephenson wasn’t a well-known prospect outside of his local area heading into last summer. He did earn an invitation to Perfect Game’s National Showcase in June at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., however, and his impressive performance there landed him a spot in the prestigious Aflac All-American Classic, played in August in San Diego. Between those two high-profile appearances, Stephenson took a big step forward with his raw stuff, and he was one of the most impressive prospects in the Aflac game. He has solidified that lofty status this spring. Stephenson opened the 2011 season with back to back no-hitters, and has consistently showcased his top-shelf stuff while going 6-2, 1.26. In his first 61 innings, he allowed only 27 hits and 17 walks while striking out 119. Stephenson’s fastball has sat at 92-94 mph, and he has held his velocity late into games, recently hitting 94 mph in the seventh inning of one contest. He also has topped out at 97 mph frequently this spring. Stephenson has the makings of two potential plus off-speed pitches, although neither is consistent yet. His curve is in the 78-80 mph range and has sharp, 12-to-6 biting action at times, while he has surprisingly good feel for his low-80s changeup that has good movement down in the zone. Stephenson has loose, athletic actions on the mound and a lightning-quick arm that comes through from a high-three-quarters release point, creating very good downhill angle to the plate. Where Stephenson may lose points to Guerrieri, and maybe even Ross, is his delivery has some extra effort, which creates inconsistency in his release point and sometimes prevents him from working down in the strike zone, where his pitches would have more movement. Stephenson committed to Washington in the NCAA’s early-signing period and would be seen as a major rebuilding block for a program that has struggled this year (13-29 through the first week of May), and pretty much since two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum left the program in 2006. His projected high standing in the draft, however, makes it a longshot that Stephenson will ever set foot on the Washington campus.

Extremely good CU that’s 12-15 mph off fastball.

I'll take a FB pitcher who walks no one
and strikes out a healthy number. I may be wrong, but being a fly ball pitcher generally limits hits as well if he keeps them from being line drives. If he can limit baserunners while still allowing a few HRs, he’ll be fine. I get the feeling that with his strike throwing tendecies and average fastball velo, he’s probably going to give up his fair share of homers no matter what.

Those are the numbers Im thinking as well

Which means 28 baserunners to 56 K’s.
Which would mean an opposing OBP of .161 and a k-rate of .322. That’s worse than Taylor Teagarden last year. SOme quick futzing on Fangraphs lead me to Bill Doak, who had a career .157 OBP and 36.7 K%.

Problem has alway been that he’s easy to hit – BAA over .300 every season. So, IIRC, they had him work on the cutter. So far this season his BAA is .214 – 46 Ks in 41.2 IP – 1.82 GO/AO. Sounds good, but this season he’s gotten wild – 20 BB in those IP. He gave up only 23 BBs in 129.1 IP last year, so you gotta think maybe he can straighten that out.
W. Thompson is having a really weird year.
Walks had never been a big problem before this season so I’m hoping its the product of working on a new pitch (not sure how correct that is though).

Check out the FIP and ERA similarity. Kinda cool

Parks and Cole are working on their top 10s
What is you guys’?
Perez is still the consensus 1, easily I think. Profar still 2? I have Erlin and Ramirez leapfrogging Scheppers. Maybe Olt, too
>mfw
mine
1. Martin Perez
2. Neil Ramirez
3. Jurickson Profar
4. Robbie Erlin
5. Mike Olt
6. David Perez
7. Tanner Scheppers
8. Joe Wieland
9. Luke Jackson
10. Leonys Martin
I'd pry move Martin up higher.
I added him at 10 without putting much thought into it. I just realized while I was at 10 that I forgot Martin. I would probably put him around 5 or 6.
Martin Perez should also be higher than #1.
(At least that was how I read your post before I understood it).
I like this list.
This might be my top ten guys, maybe with a slightly different order.
Ever been in a boardroom, or a gang fight? Ever save a life? Ever won a court case against the odds? Ever held a dying buddy in your arms?.- jackanape on "perspective," 11/8/2010.
"do you a jet ski rental place would work here" - Mike E, 5/10/2011, in response to me saying I would rather face the Thunder than the Grizzlies in the WCF.
I would probably have the same guys in a different order
With Mendez instead of Weiland.

Mendez is number 11 for me.

I value Wieland's floor
Plus, I think he can be a solid #3-4. You can be very successful when you walk no one.
Actually, he didn't have Loux in there
I’d probably have Loux top 6-7.

BTW
Holy shit do we need hitters.

Ask our bullpen that.
"He’s the boomstick, you know what I mean?" -Ian Kinsler

Olt

David Perez/Luke Jackson/Alfaro – Not proven but shit ton of potential category
Wieland
Loux
Mendez
This is done without much thought.
1. Perez
2. Namirez
3. Profar
4. Erlin
5. Loux

Oh shit, I forgot Scheppers.
Put him 7 and move everyone else down.

Loux is awfully high.

Disagree.
No signs of his shoulder problem, stuff appears to be back, walking fewer guys than I would’ve thought initially.

probably can't truly evaluate him until AA

Results wise, sure.
That’s why I mentioned health, stuff and a lack of wildness after a pretty prolonged layoff. Those 3 apply regardless of what level he’s in.

Good question
Martin Perez
Neil Ramirez
Robbie Erlin
Jurickson Profar
Leonys Martin
Tanner Scheppers
David Perez
Mike Olt
Jorge Alfaro
Joe Wieland
I have a feeling The Legend is going to start the season on fire in Spokane
4 HR over the first 2 weeks, then he’ll cool off. The potential is amazing. I’m going to regret leaving him off the list. I completely forgot him.
Actually, fuck it. Putting Alfaro in the top 10
1. Martin Perez
2. Neil Ramirez
3. Jurickson Profar
4. Robbie Erlin
5. Mike Olt
6. Tanner Scheppers
7. Leonys Martin
8. Joe Wieland
9. David Perez
10. Jorge Alfaro
I firmly expect LuJack to make me rue leaving him out of the top 10
>mfw
question to anyone ranking leonys lower than two or three
should we trust the rangers on him? I can’t see the rangers giving 15mil to any of their prospects outside of perez. Does he fall into a different category due to be being close? I understand most of the other guys were either very young or not a free agent but if they were free agents right now I’d think only perez would get 15mil.

Martin belongs in the top 5

Its a hard system to compare by
16 and 17 year olds aren’t getting the same money as a 23 year old Cuban professional.
Draft picks rarely get that due to the fact its not a free agent type system that player can only negotiate with the team that drafted him.
The bonus we gave shows we are high on him but I dont think it should affect his ranking on the list much. As of Right now I have to put him behind guys like Ramirez, Erlin and Profar for many reasons.
Ask me again in 6 weeks and he could easily move up.
Jose Ruiz is fucking BEASTING right now.

MDLS is on the DL with a shoulder ouchie
… and no Pelican phenom has been called up yet. An upcoming off day will allow Frisco to skip Mobley’s turn next week and delay the need for a 5th starter until the 29th – if that’s what they want to do. Maybe they’ll bring up Brandon Webb for a rehab stint. baahahahaahah
Had he stayed down, Feldman would have gotten this start.
It was basically a MiL spot start for Mobley.
