JC and Parks are in Wilmington over the weekend to watch Myrtle Biatch play.  They should see Ross, Wieland and Boscan - just not sure what order yet - getting conflicting reports. Loooooove me some hyphens.

Nellie and Hammy shift their rehab stints over to Round Rock.  Godspeed, John Glenn.

Luke Jackson debuts today for the Hickory Lumberkings.  Raves have been raved about his stuff.  Don't let the country down, son.

Saturday night Martin Perez pitches @ San Antonio - great test to see if his apparent roll is fo' realz.

Goldsmith is pretty straight up, and Brian his pxp guy is pretty handy with the stats and stuff.

MYR’s Maun is an easy listen but doesn’t keep up with the game/pitches very closely.
The guy at RRE sounds like a HS football pxp guy. Better by himself than w/color guy.
The Hickory guy is kinda corny and sing-songy, but smooth. Keeps up with the game okay and is enthusiastic.
Probably in that order for me – but I listen to MYR the most because of their staff.

This sucks:

In 15 games since clubbing a grand slam on April 29th, Skole (.233/.333/.308) is batting a lowly .149 and striking out in nearly 30% of his plates appearances. He does have ten walks in that span, partially salvaging his OBP (.298).

Maybe not:
Albert Pujols (.264/.335/.408) has now gone 91 at-bats without hitting a home run, the longest such streak of his career.
He has turned in just three extra-base hits, all doubles, since homering on April 23 in Cincinnati.

Heh, that’s the way baseball go.

He is a well above average hitter for the league, but the park is not exactly pitcher friendly. It’s league average for righties and a bit friendly for lefties. The league OBP is .337, slugging is .404. For an 1-yr. old SS to be doing this is really excellent.

A+ Carolina – .689 (Myrtle Beach is playing in a fairly depressed league)

Maybe a tiny bit

but on the other hand, Loux, Wieland, Ross and Erlin are all young for the league and putting up very good numbers, no matter what the context. Erlin has the lowest ground ball rate among all qualifiers in the league, and that is a bit worrisome. But a 2.9% BB rate is just damn good.

The league FIP is 3.49 (stats through yesterday’s games). Erlin is at 3.08, Loux is at 2.29, Wieland at 2.22 and Ross at 2.76. If Erlin gives up just one less HR his FIP would be 2.93.

Frisco notes ...
During Aaron’s pre-game interview with manager Steve Buechele, fans got an idea on how the team will handle the open spot in the rotation. Frisco will not need a fifth starter until next Sunday (May 29) because of the off day Tuesday. As for that starter, Buechele said, "TBA is the word of the day." He also said that he has not heard any news on Miguel De Los Santos, who was the fifth member of the rotation until a shoulder injury.

If this same process is used into June, then the next "open" slot would not come until June 5. There are a few pitchers in high-A Myrtle Beach who have pitched well, so that is a possibility moving forward, too.

Newberg threw something down
Who are Wilson Ramos, Joe Testa, Matt Gorgen, Matt Cusick, Andrew Shive, Andrew Lambo, James McDonald, Joe Martinez, John Bowker, Rick Vanden Hurk, and Daniel Turpen?

One organizational top 10 prospect (Ramos), one who was so ranked a year ago but isn’t now (Lambo), and a bunch of journeymen and fringy minor leaguers.

That group was traded, last July 29 and 30 and 31, for closer Matt Capps, closer Chad Qualls, closer Kerry Wood, closer Octavio Dotel, and fellow veteran relievers Javier Lopez, Will Ohman, and Ramon Ramirez.

Very nice. And when initially looking at his CS numbers, I was a bit worried...but then this gold from Lucas yesterday
Leonys Martin made an immediate impression with his speed. Not only is he fast, he shows excellent instinct on the bases, instantly capitalizing on any delay or misstep by the defense. Martin lined a single to center in his first at-bat and stole second. In the 3rd, Martin raced out a chopped grounder to second. Martin next blooped a ball just beyond third and reached second base because he sprinted out of the gate and the fielders were running to the ball a bit too casually.

Very impressive.

What’s up with pitcher Tanner Scheppers?

Scheppers has been bothered by chronic back problems since Spring Training and is currently working out in Surprise, Ariz. He is throwing on flat ground but may graduate to throwing off a mound next week. He is going to be sidelined for at least another month while he rebuilds his strength.

The CB is Wieland’s best secondary pitch, but I have to say, the slider he was showing on Sunday was even better. It didn’t feature a crazy break, but he disguised it very well, as it stayed on the same plane before showing a late two-plane break.

Dominoes might be starting to fall. Matt Thompson isn’t listed as a probable against Charleston, so he might be getting the call-up to MYR to replace either Erlin or Wieland this week. Or he could be hurt or something, but still …

Prospect

Slipped to 14th round because of worries about bonus demands and threat to go back to school. Rangers signed him for around 3rd money. He can supposedly push mid 90’s and had three offspeed pitches in college. I do not know if he is still using all three. At 22 they may think he can handle being pushed. In his preseason rankings Cole had a ceiling of mid rotation starter but needs to work on the offspeed stuff.

by Fox6271 on May 25, 2011 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

IIRC, JC had a mildly encouraging report on Tepesch not long ago ...

but I couldn’t find it at his site. He’s not getting hit so often so far in May, fwiw.
