JC and Parks are in Wilmington over the weekend to watch Myrtle Biatch play. They should see Ross, Wieland and Boscan - just not sure what order yet - getting conflicting reports. Loooooove me some hyphens.
Nellie and Hammy shift their rehab stints over to Round Rock. Godspeed, John Glenn.
Luke Jackson debuts today for the Hickory Lumberkings. Raves have been raved about his stuff. Don't let the country down, son.
Saturday night Martin Perez pitches @ San Antonio - great test to see if his apparent roll is fo' realz.

Saw Leonys
at Frisco last night. I was pretty impressed. The defense is as advertised. He has very good range and a strong arm. He also worked the count well.
I hear Wilmington has some A-Grade bathtub crank.

Poor royals.
They’ve got nothing.
Well, best of luck to him. I truly want a Royals-Rangers post season soon. He’s one of the guys that could make that happen.
Promote Mike Olt to Round Rock!
Buckel starting Sunday - probably a tandem with Rojas
After a rough first two outtings, he’s put together a decent last 6.0 IP – 7 hits, 0 runs, 2 BBs, 7 Ks.

Seriously considering a Monday twin bill [11a in SA, 7p in Round Rock], almost just to say I did it.
Who is the best PBP guy for the Rangers affiliate?
(All I know is its not the guy to calls the Round Rock games.)
Really?
I thought the RR guy was in consideration for the Rangers gig?

Goldsmith is pretty straight up, and Brian his pxp guy is pretty handy with the stats and stuff.
MYR’s Maun is an easy listen but doesn’t keep up with the game/pitches very closely.
The guy at RRE sounds like a HS football pxp guy. Better by himself than w/color guy.
The Hickory guy is kinda corny and sing-songy, but smooth. Keeps up with the game okay and is enthusiastic.
Probably in that order for me – but I listen to MYR the most because of their staff.
Hope the Express game does not get rained out tonight, cause I got free tickets.
It has been raining off and on all day, and there is a 50% chance for tonight. Not that I am dying to watch Seth McClung pitch, but I would like to watch 2/3 of the Rangers’ opening day outfield in action.

Not much out there
I’d have to imagine it’s an exaggeration about how much the rangers are after him. Maybe with a late round pick. Here is an article about him. 86-88 FB, T91. Says he throws a CB, SP, CH as well.
Maybe we will get to see

This sucks:
In 15 games since clubbing a grand slam on April 29th, Skole (.233/.333/.308) is batting a lowly .149 and striking out in nearly 30% of his plates appearances. He does have ten walks in that span, partially salvaging his OBP (.298).
We’re not about sending messages. We’re about winning ballgames.-Wash, 04/03/11
Maybe not:
Albert Pujols (.264/.335/.408) has now gone 91 at-bats without hitting a home run, the longest such streak of his career.
He has turned in just three extra-base hits, all doubles, since homering on April 23 in Cincinnati.
Heh, that’s the way baseball go.

I really wanted to call a Skole HR, but I can’t convince myself.

hmm...wonder what happened
Says Leonys Martin was caught stealing home with Ruiz batting. Appears on gameday that it was before the first pitch was even thrown to Ruiz.
# Leonys Martin reaches on throwing error by third baseman James Darnell.
# Renny Osuna singles on a line drive to left fielder Jaff Decker. Leonys Martin to 3rd.
# Tommy Mendonca strikes out swinging.
# Leonys Martin out at home, pitcher Anthony Bass to catcher Ali Solis. Renny Osuna to 2nd.
# Jose Ruiz singles on a ground ball to center fielder Blake Tekotte. Renny Osuna scores.
Eh... could have been worse.

Season
He just left the game in the 9th after a collision when he stole 2nd. Might have banged his knee. I don’t know how serious it is.
Season line
254/.390/.474 9 2B | 2 3B | 4 HR | 19 BB | 20 SO
The power is shocking to me, and the BB are very encouraging.
Well
He is a well above average hitter for the league, but the park is not exactly pitcher friendly. It’s league average for righties and a bit friendly for lefties. The league OBP is .337, slugging is .404. For an 1-yr. old SS to be doing this is really excellent.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
Think of how good he'll be when he can walk!

The league average, though, is fairly depressed offensively, right?

No, it's kind of in the middle
and definitely the more offensive of the two A ball leagues.
Here are OPS nos. for all the minor leagues so far this year:
AAA International League – .729
AAA PCL – .798
AA TX – .756
AA Eastern – .698
AA Southern – .747
A+ Carolina – .689 (Myrtle Beach is playing in a fairly depressed league)
A+ California – .776
A+ Florida State – .715
A Midwest – .679
A SAL – .741
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
Thanks

Oh, man.
Yes. Which makes me think we might be overrating the MB rotation a bit. Obviously they are good but they are playing in a favorable environment.
I'd agree if they weren't striking out so many and walking so few.
Fly balls may turn into outs more often down there, but our top guys aren’t giving up a ton of fly balls, either.

Maybe a tiny bit
but on the other hand, Loux, Wieland, Ross and Erlin are all young for the league and putting up very good numbers, no matter what the context. Erlin has the lowest ground ball rate among all qualifiers in the league, and that is a bit worrisome. But a 2.9% BB rate is just damn good.
The league FIP is 3.49 (stats through yesterday’s games). Erlin is at 3.08, Loux is at 2.29, Wieland at 2.22 and Ross at 2.76. If Erlin gives up just one less HR his FIP would be 2.93.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
League FIP
take that with a grain of salt, the constant in the equation may be different than the one I used. I think the correct league-wide FIP for the Carolina League is 3.62, which makes those four sound even better.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
I can see him being in AA next year

with the usual caveat that I’ve never seen him and person and know nothing.

Newberg report is full of good stuff from Extended spring training
Here’s a sample:
Righthander David Perez has fanned 17 and walked one in 11 innings (two runs on eight hits)
In 56 at-bats, catcher Jorge Alfaro is hitting .400/.411/.618
Slight outfielder Kendall Radcliffe has three home runs in his first 24 at-bats
What the hell?
Hirotoshi Onaka is hitting .378/.549/.649 in 37 at-bats, with 14 walks
There is only one appropriate reaction to this

Spokane is gonna rock this year. I'm so bummed we aren't taking a trip that direction this summer.

The only thing I found was this quote from the Rome newspaper ...
Rome’s Reyes had to be helped off the field after a collision at second base on a steal by Hickory’s Profar. No update was available on the injury
If both guys had to helped off it doesn’t sound good.
The radio guy last night
said that Profar’s leg came up unintentionally as he slid in. They said Profar was holding his knee before being helped off, but it sounded like he could put pressure on his leg. They said Reyes couldn’t put any pressure on his leg.
Does Profar know who Ty Cobb is?

Frisco notes ...
During Aaron’s pre-game interview with manager Steve Buechele, fans got an idea on how the team will handle the open spot in the rotation. Frisco will not need a fifth starter until next Sunday (May 29) because of the off day Tuesday. As for that starter, Buechele said, "TBA is the word of the day." He also said that he has not heard any news on Miguel De Los Santos, who was the fifth member of the rotation until a shoulder injury.
If this same process is used into June, then the next "open" slot would not come until June 5. There are a few pitchers in high-A Myrtle Beach who have pitched well, so that is a possibility moving forward, too.

Very nice. And when initially looking at his CS numbers, I was a bit worried...but then this gold from Lucas yesterday
Leonys Martin made an immediate impression with his speed. Not only is he fast, he shows excellent instinct on the bases, instantly capitalizing on any delay or misstep by the defense. Martin lined a single to center in his first at-bat and stole second. In the 3rd, Martin raced out a chopped grounder to second. Martin next blooped a ball just beyond third and reached second base because he sprinted out of the gate and the fielders were running to the ball a bit too casually.
Very impressive.

Prospect
Slipped to 14th round because of worries about bonus demands and threat to go back to school. Rangers signed him for around 3rd money. He can supposedly push mid 90’s and had three offspeed pitches in college. I do not know if he is still using all three. At 22 they may think he can handle being pushed. In his preseason rankings Cole had a ceiling of mid rotation starter but needs to work on the offspeed stuff.
IIRC, JC had a mildly encouraging report on Tepesch not long ago ...
but I couldn’t find it at his site. He’s not getting hit so often so far in May, fwiw.
I was just kicking around over at Lonestardugout too
