Alexi Ogando, The BABIP Monster, And The Greatest Pitcher Ever
The time has come, Matches said, to talk of many things.
Of pitchers - and BABIP - and ceilings max
Of history and kings
And why regression has not caught—
This Ogando of whom we sing.

This is one of Joey's best.
I liked it a lot.

agreed...fantastic article.
I am coming for you, Mark Lowe.
You’d better run, because there will be more with me.

kind of ot:
the other day you alluded to something having been written on evaluating pitcher variance. Where was that?
Go Rice Owls!
Matt Harrison - once upon a time a good #3 starter...
I swear it was at The Hardball Times.
I can’t find it, though, and it’s bothering me.
I think I may have included it in one of my BtB link thingies, though, so maybe I/you should check there.
all I could find on THT
was an article about the different values of guys whose ERA, FIP, and xFIP; but that isn’t what we were talking about.

I'll be honest
I keep expecting Ogando to regress each time he starts… Of course, I keep getting pleasantly surprised.
I know this sounds stupid, but how much of his lack of regression is due to other teams having my attitude and not taking him seriously enough? I realize that it’s stupid to assert that major league teams don’t do their due diligence for each pitcher they face, but I wonder if his reputation as “that guy they pulled out of the bullpen to fill in as a starter for a while” is helping him fly under the radar moreso than Harrison and Holland who had more publicized ST showings.

I highly doubt thats happening
I think its simply a matter of him having a badass slider that he can throw in literally any count to any spot in the zone along with a legit upper 90s fastball.
Thats a very powerful combo and the fact hes adding a changeup basically midseason could help to stave off some of that regression.
Still like the observation by tball (think it was him)
Over the last month his BABIP has increased while his FIP has decreased. Getting less lucky while getting better.
Hobson, did you see that?
Yes.

Yes. If she murdered the tie it would be the perfect crime.
LSJ pointed out a while ago that, for how many whiffs he gets, he probably wasn't getting as many Ks as he should going forward.
Which is exactly the sort of thing that can lower FIP. And/or what Steve said.
He likes to throw strikes and miss bats. As far as SSS stats, those are two things that make me feel good.
I bet he LOVES to party, too.

Yep, HR rate is down a tad
K rate creeping up, and he has a pretty high infield fly rate. Tied for 13th among AL starters in swinging strike rate.

Seems like his GB/FB ratio has improved - is that correct?

I noticed last night he missed the zone low a few times...
If you are going to miss with a fastball, that’s a good place to miss. It could be that low pitch was helping those ground ball DPs.
that was fun last night
I had gotten rid of my tickets for last night’s because my son had a little league game scheduled. When it got canceled because of bad field conditions I decided to get tickets for the Rangers and go anyway figuring we would get our Josh statues and at least stay for 5-6 innings so I wouldn’t have kept the kids up much too late on a school night. Needless to say we were there to the end and still home at a reasonable hour. If they could all be like that I’d get a whole lot closer to going to all 81.
Could we teach Ogando how to throw a screwball?
I want a pitcher that can throw a screwball.

Ha
you may have to resort to video games there.

My mind just says throw ball throw hard and strike. - Marteen
If I were guessing, I'd say those are really change-ups.
I know Braden more or less abandoned his in favor of a circle-change before he made it the majors, but might throw it occasionally.
Herrera is the only one I know who throws a TRUE screwball (since pitchFX doesn’t show any similar movement for other pitchers’ pitches).
Yeah, I think that's more true

Yeah, I remember Pedro's screwball was a circle change.
With ridiculous velocity. Paul O’Neill called it “the pitch from hell.”

I hope Ogando make the AS team
but doesn’t pitch.

Hope he can keep this up until the trade deadline
At which point maybe we trade for a front-line starter to take his spot in the rotation and move him to the bullpen to rest his arm. Make sense?
