Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

Memorial Day OT thread

Thanks to all who have served and the hardships they have put up with to protect the freedoms and rights this great country is founded upon...

Star-divide

With the Division I national title game today on ESPN at 2:30, I figured I would drop a lacrosse wikilink.

Lacrosse in the United States is played at the collegiate level in both the club and sanctioned team sport. There are currently 61 NCAA sanctioned Division I men's lacrosse teams, 37 Division II men's lacrosse teams, and 166 Division III men's lacrosse teams. There are also currently 91 Division I women's lacrosse teams, 57 Division II women's lacrosse Teams, and 201 Division III women's lacrosse teams. 209 collegiate men's club teams compete at the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association level, including most major universities in the United States. Another 107 schools have club teams in the National College Lacrosse League.

The first U. S. intercollegiate game was played on November 22, 1877 between New York University and Manhattan College. Lacrosse had been introduced in upstate New York in the 1860s. Lacrosse was further introduced to the Baltimore area in the 1890s. These two areas continue to be the hotbeds of college lacrosse in the U.S. The first intercollegiate lacrosse tournament was held in 1881, with Harvard beating Princeton, 3-0, in the championship game.

The NCAA men's Lacrosse Division I in 1971 when Cornell took the first championship over Maryland, 12-6. Johns Hopkins has 9 championships with 3 consecutive wins from 1978 to 1980. The other two teams that have 3 consecutive wins are Syracuse from 1988 to 1990 and Princeton from 1996 to 1998. Syracuse also holds the NCAA record of championships with 11, the last occurring in 2009. In 2010 Duke took their first NCAA Championship over Notre Dame in an exciting 6-5 overtime game. The Division I national championship tournament draws the one of the largest crowds of any Division I NCAA sport.

i could see them losing maybe 10 over 2 or 12 over 3.

In a perfect world, I’d hope OSU would lose a lot of scholarships on the basis of the amount of players involved. But, excuse my cynicism, I don’t think that’s going to happen.

right now the NCAA is not happy with people lying to them. add in everything else and i could see them losing 10 over 2. thats only 5 a year, which isnt that bad.

Here's what happened at Miami in 1995

(from Wikipedia)

Under [Paul] Dee’s watch, the University of Miami athletic program was sanctioned by the NCAA in 1995. Eighty students, 57 of whom were football players, falsified their Pell Grant applications, illegally securing more than $220,000 in federal grant money. Federal officials described the scam as “perhaps the largest centralized fraud … ever committed in the history of the Pell Grant program.” Moreover, the University provided over $400,000 worth of other, improper payments to Miami football players. The NCAA also ruled that the University failed to wholly implement its drug-testing program, and permitted three football student-athletes to compete without being subject to the required disciplinary measures specified in the policy.

They lost 31 scholarships over two years (24 by the NCAA, 7 were self-imposed), but also received a bowl ban.
Oh, and Paul Dee was the chair of the infractions committee during USC’s case. Not going to be a conspiracy theorist here, but that’s a fact worth noting.

I played lacrosse in high school

I was a hockey player (goalie) and these jackoffs on the lacrosse team convinced me to come out and play goalie for them. Which is major bullshit because a lacrosse goalie barely wears any pads at all. F that. I ended up playing midfield and I just ran around having no idea what to do most of the time.

Since this is a little CFB heavy this mornin', thought I'd throw this out there.

Phil Steele has his pre season All-Big XII teams out now.

Kind of surprised Jackson Jeffcoat only made 4th team defense. I thought he was pretty good last year for only being a freshman. Kind of surprised he picked Jones over Wheeden, too.

Not really.

Look at everyone behind him. Christine Michael would be his only competition and he’s coming off injury. The KSU and OSU guys are first year starters. He kind of got the nod by default.

-the new tiger woods

looking for anything that is multiplayer (prefer more than 2 players locally) as i have 2 other brothers…while there are a ton of decent multiplayer games for xbox, from looking @ movie trading post (what a store) i was unable to find anything that met my demands…

Talk about taking marketing liberties with history:
In the year 1837, in the little Swiss village of La Chaux-de-fonds, one man came up with a radical idea – to sell fine Swiss timepieces at modest prices. That man, Raphael Picard, is better known as the founder of the Invicta watch company. Privately owned and operated since its founding, Invicta ensures the absolute highest standards in each watch they produce.

The watch field is amusing since it’s one of the few areas where US companies will buy out the names of older companies to try to look non-US-based.

LSB, I come to you with a heavy heart today. Not sure if there's a more appropriate forum for this, but oh well:

One of my dearest college friends passed away while teaching English in Spain yesterday at the age of 23. She was a Ranger fan due back in the States in 2 weeks, and was already planning on a July 4th weekend of Ranger games to go to. Needless to say, I’m shocked and at a loss for words.

No causes have been determined yet, but I read that there is a huge crisis in Spain with infected cucumbers/lettuce/tomatoes that have left 14 people dead across Europe, so I lean towards that being the culprit, as this was simply out of the blue, and I had just talked to her within the last week. Just a tragedy, regardless.

I've had a chance...

to catch up on a couple of movies this weekend that I should have seen a year ago. Both ‘The King’s Speech’ and ‘The Fighter’ were every bit as good as they were made out to be. Some great acting in the two movies from Firth, Rush, and Bale.

Christian Bale may be an asshole in real life, but he’s one helluva actor.
