Nera, MPer, and Mendez Day (5/5) and Beyond

The stars are aligned on the Rangers' farm. I expect a lot of chatter today, so a new thread makes sense. And, I feel like making Mighty Joe Wieland an honorary member of this historic day after his dominant performance last night: 6IP, 13K, 0BB, 2H (infield singles; one a wind-blown popup).

Ramirez has been great in Round Rock

The light bulb has turned on for that kid. I was excited when he got drafted then I was down on him last year now just look at him.

There was some seriously bad MI defense going on for RR

Which explains the 3 I-Cubs runs; don’t have any idea why RR couldn’t hit Ortiz worth a darn. Just bad luck and good defense, I suppose.

MB finally comes to Salem for a 4 game set starting tonight.

I can’t wait to get out and catch a few of these games over the weekend. According to the probables it looks like Erlin, Loux and Ross will start the 3 games this weekend. I’m hoping to get out and get some good photos/video of those guys while they are in town.

some quotes re: the two flukey hits allowed ...
“Ramirez hit the highest fly ball I’ve ever seen and it was just that time of the night, we completely lost it,” Wieland said. “I was the only one in the park who saw it. And so I was on the third-base line, I lost it and then I see it coming back down, but it was behind me. And I kinda dove back to get it and missed it and kinda fell on my butt. It was definitely a strange play.”
Wieland said he used his fastball to set up his breaking stuff and keep hitters off-balance. He used that approach against Eury Perez in the sixth.
.
“I bounced a curve in the dirt and [Perez] hit it for a base hit — he swung, it bounced in front of the plate and I guess the ball had some serious English on it,” Wieland said.

It’s uncommon to see a young arm possess such advanced secondary command. Wieland can drop his CB in the dirt or he can locate it for strikes. Quite a weapon.

I doubt you would get many Royals prospect fans to believe the Ramirez is on the same level as those two.

Duffy has been unreal, especially his K/BB of 33/6. He should be in the Royals bullpen right now, if not the rotation.

Duffy probably has a higher ceiling than Ramirez, especially if Duffy has really found something in his changeup as a few reports suggest. I might have to drive over to Omaha and watch one of his starts.

had Beltre at #2 and Font at #5 on that list. Michael Main would’ve been under consideration for the top spot if he hadn’t been moved to the NWL.

huge awesome righty. and what I’m reading suggests that he’ll be able to fill out and the already nice fastball will get even nicer.

7) Michael Kelly RHP, West Boca Raton HS (FL)
Kelly is one of the top right-handers in the 2011 draft, and he may also offer some of the best projection in the class as well. At 6’5" and 180 lbs, he has the ideal pitcher’s frame; He is extremely long limbed and lanky with tons of room to grow into. With his big body, Kelly also gets a very good down hill plane on his pitches which include a fastball in 89-92 range that has touched 94, a mid 70’s curveball, and a high 70’s change-up; all of which he can throw for strikes. His delivery is very fluid and loose, and the ball jumps out of his hand. His delivery also allows him to get into a pretty good fielding position on the mound. He does have a tendency to get a little long in the back for his wind up, but it is correctable. Michael Kelly is one of the more polished arms in the class and offers tremendous upside. He should bring plus pitchability and athleticism to any organization that takes him, and in his case that should be in the first round of the 2011 draft.

Any of them Corner OF prospects with legit power potential?

by Tex2044 on May 7, 2011 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions

That's probably Goodwin but

we just signed Leonys Martin, so do we need another CF prospect? He has the potential to be a 5 tool player if his power develops. He was also a football WR. Goetzman is an interesting prospect because he’s drawing rave reviews from scouts. Currently plays SS in HS, but would move to COF. Has great power/speed potential, but I’m hesitant at the moment because there are very few scouting reports out there and he’s had more helium than just about any other prospect. Nimmo is another COF, but has average speed. Doesn’t have a HS baseball team because he’s from Wyoming, so he’s raw but has plenty of potential. Beede and Osich are also still available at pitcher.

Since I have ESPN insider, why not use it...
Analysis: Hit 100 in a recent scrimmage with good sink on the fastball and a wipeout slider, but bad results and perceived lack of toughness prevent his top-of-the-draft stuff from putting him at the top of the draft.

IMO (from reading scouting reports and watching video)...

Meyer has great stuff, but he has serious command issues. So while Kelly doesn’t throw as hard yet (90-94), his FB could add more velo as he grows, it has great movement, and he commands it well.

If the Rangers were going to take two pitchers, CW13 made good picks. Kelley has a very high ceiling with a great fastball, good command, and secondaries that while raw, show some potential. He may be the most projectable pitcher in the draft. Beede has a FB that is straight(ish) and sits 90-92, but he has a GREAT changeup. The one at 3:10 in this video is damn sexy.

Also, I listened to an interview Kelly did for a local news station...

and it sounds like there won’t be too many signability concerns with him. He said that college is a back up plan if “pro ball doesn’t work out.” Basically, pay him his money and he’ll sign.

Beede

“Beede features four pitches, each of which has at least average potential. His fastball sits in the low 90s, but he can dial it up to 94-96 mph. He also throws a circle-changeup which looks like it’s going to be his best secondary pitch. He also throws a curveball, which with a little tightening could be a pretty decent pitch as well.”

Inauspicious beginning.

NeRa walked the first batter on several very close pitches, then the catcher throws the ball into CF on a steal attempt and the runner ends up at third. Scores on a groundout to short.

BigSteve mathings?
As I’ve mentioned, Wieland was hit very hard in four of his first five high-A starts in Bakersfield last year. In 12 subsequent appearances and 64 innings, he’s struck out 74 batters (29%) versus only eight walks, allowed less than a baserunner per inning, and posted a 1.97 ERA.

Heh, nice numbers.

Also:

The 21-year-old Wieland is the eighth-youngest pitcher in the Carolina League.

Wielandings

From Z back on 5/18/2009 -

2008 4th round pick Joe Wieland has been added to the Class A Hickory roster and will start their 6:00 game tonight.
.
Wieland is not a name that has been uttered much in the media, but he is a prospect that observers – and apparently the Rangers – are excited about. A few notes:
.
    - Nolan Ryan has reportedly taken a special interest in Wieland since before he was drafted. Mike Hindman observed evidence of this in spring training (scroll to the bottom of the article).
… and here’s the 3/29/2009 MJH blurb Z was referring to …
You’ll never guess who drove over from the big league game to watch Joe Wieland pitch. A hint: he has seven MLB no-hitters and appears to have some sort of job with the Rangers. And it didn’t take long to see why Mr. Ryan is so taken with young Mr. Wieland: Wieland is a badass.
.
He loves to bust hitters way inside with his hard, heavy fastball. He backed one hitter off the plate by about five inches. And when they are starting to think about how bad it will hurt if he comes in any more, he works the outside corner (on one occasion with an excellent change). Wieland dropped a couple of promising curves with solid 11-5 shape as well, though he had trouble commanding that pitch.
Even Rhadigan-lovin’ Evan Grant commented on the Ryan/Wieland connection back on 2/18/2010 –
RHP Joe Wieland: Nolan Ryan took a shine to Wieland during the Rangers’ draft meetings, then followed him closely after the club took him in the fourth round in 2008. Wieland went 5-1 with a 1.44 ERA in an impressive first season pitching in the Arizona League. He followed it up with an equally impressive instructional league, during which Ryan met with him on several occasions.

ya know ...

… when you read this Wieland Q&A from 11/2009 and realize he was just 19 at the time, it’s kinda easy to understand why this guy is being successful.

the first strikeout of the 5th was a inside pitch (wasn’t really low) that tied up the hitter

On the second strikeout of the inning, Neil Ramirez accomplished what CERN could not: he created a mini black hole that bent space-time between the mount and home plate.

Starling and Lindor are good

but I doubt they’ll be able to get into the top 25 this year. Starling has ridiculous potential, but he’s also extremely raw.

To clarify.

Obviously not all 6. I think Starling once people get a better look at him will be. Same with Bundy.

Any of the other 4 could make it based upon how high the evaluator is on that guy.

by LiamP on May 5, 2011 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Starling?

You really think he’ll move up more? He’s been shooting up for almost a year now. I think the present hype has actually gone too far now. I think he has all of the potential in the world. I’ve seen him hit an opposite field HR over 400 ft for team USA, he has great speed, a good eye at the plate when I’ve seen him, and he is rail thin. When he fills out, he should develop good power. I just don’t think he is developed enough to be a Top 25 guy this year, not to mention I don’t think he’ll sign until the last minute, so he’ll barely play this year.

by Tex2044 on May 5, 2011 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes.

The present hype is in line with where his ceiling is; he has the type of ceiling that people will salivate over enough to put him in a top 25.

by LiamP on May 5, 2011 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions

That's kinda my point

A HS kid has to be basically transcendent to come out and IMMEDIATELY be a top-25 talent. If there was such a prospect, I’m not sure why he wouldn’t be the clear-cut choice at 3 behind Rendon and Cole.

I just realized he’s 20 minutes up the road in North Augusta, SC.

by Tex2044 on May 7, 2011 3:34 PM CDT reply actions

Law...
Guerrieri is one of the top prep arms in this year’s draft, showing huge velocity with a knockout curveball and a good frame. I’ve had scouts tell me it’s the best raw stuff of any high school pitcher in this draft, sitting 92-97 in most outings with a knockout breaking ball and a body to match.

Although I read somewhere else that his velo was starting to dip. Also hard to buy the “best raw stuff of any high school pitcher in this draft” statement considering Bundy is in this class.

<blockquoteWhile some scouts (many actually) have expressed some concern over the stiffness in Harrison’s swing, it hasn’t affected his ability to crush high-school pitching.>

Another question mark for Harrison is his long-term position. He doesn’t have great footwork at third, so he’ll likely end up in the outfield.

I know we need position players, but I'm a sucker for high-potential arms.

You can never have enough. I think it would be easier to trade high potential arms for high potential bats than it is to trade high potential bats for high potential arms. Plus, it is easier for Texas to sign a hitter in free agency than it has been with pitchers.

I've seen a 7 on it from other sources

I’m confident in my ability to scout, but when sevens or eights are involved, I get happy feet. It’s not easy to throw a “well above-average at the major league level” grade on a low-level minor leaguer; it makes quite a statement and you need to stand behind it without hesitation. I could have thrown a seven on the glove, but I had enough doubt in the grade that I brought it down a half-step. Call it a slight hedge or call it a lack of fortitude, but I just didn’t feel comfortable standing behind such a high grade.

That said, I might throw a seven on a low-level hitter in the next week. I’m still debating it. I guess that suggests, using my own logic, that I should lower the grade. I’m just not sure. I love the hit tool that much. I see a future .300 hitter if the strength improves. We shall see.

Doobie

I put a 55/60 on his future tool, meaning I think he could hit in the ~.285 range at the major league level when he reaches developmental maturity. Not many plus hit tools at that level. I think Alberto has the raw hit tool to hit .300 some day. Lacking plus speed and strength could limit him, though.

They rarely work out

West has a serious arm on the mound (I say on the mound, because his raw arm only graded in the 55/60 range at 3B), but aside from a few success stories, most conversions don’t produce major league quality arms. The Rangers have a few on their resume which makes this worth monitoring.

Velocity gives West a great start, but learning how to pitch is the difficult obstacle in this equation.

So, how exactly did this happen?

Where did this arm strength come happen? Or is it a matter of the throwing motion leading to very different skillsets?

His raw arm strength at 3B didn't translate to a 7 or 8 arm at the position

But on the mound, under those specific conditions, that arm strength was able to emerge. Macumba had a 7 arm (at least) behind the plate. He doesn’t have a 7 (at least) FB on the mound.

It’s above my pay grade.

all position players to devote time to throwing from the mound to discover if they had this hidden potential?
West probably always had more potential as a pitcher, and if he’d been one during his high school years he’d likely be a much better prospect now.

He saw them on the family crest sitting above your fire place

while he was sitting outside your window. Nothing to worry about.

It was on his signet ring, he punched me in the forehead.

So I see it every time I go to the restroom…ouch.

So ...

Send Melo back to extended to work on things until Spokane kicks off? Give Buckel his spot in the roto? Assign Luke to HIC to tandem with Rojas or Buckel for a few weeks until Summer promotions start?

That seems unpossible

ya know ...

Luke is older, a higher draft pick and supposedly looking fantastic in AZ. Don’t know why I have him deferring to Buckel in the above scenario. Give Luke Jackson Melo’s roto spot and tell Buckel to make iorange’s mom some dinner. harrumph

I wish Biannucci was a real prospect.

Joe Wieland is not impressed.

BABIP, a few more K's, and nine months are all that tilt towards Miller's favor

Otherwise Wieland is outdoing him or sitting right beside him in every category.

I went back to the 4/18 MYR recap to check on some Wieland minutiae and came across this
The Pelicans got another good night out of their bullpen, starting with Andrew Doyle. The recent call-up from Hickory has filled in well for Neil Ramirez with three scoreless innings on Thursday and two more tonight. He set down all six batters he faced, striking out three as he posted zeroes in the seventh and eighth. Doyle (1-0) picked up the win after Adair put the Birds ahead for good in the seventh.

It… it went downhill from there for ADoyle.
