Ramirez has been great in Round Rock
The light bulb has turned on for that kid. I was excited when he got drafted then I was down on him last year now just look at him.

I don't think it's any coincidence
NeRa’s ascension has coincided with Dirkatriggles’ disappearance.
NeRa 1, Dirkatron 0
What's the rumpus?
There's no longer
a Neil Ramirez voodoo doll having his release point changed every day.
"By MLB.TV, we can see J. Hamilton's homer, M. Young's clutch, and N. Feliz's explosive. All about Rangers things can be our interest" --South Korean Rangers fan
"LSB is big on the sanctity of life for some reason." ---LSJ
Could you imagine
the pressure of pitching 100 miles away from someone like Dirkatron and his white-hot hate?
What's the rumpus?
Wait...Ramon Ortiz with the win over RR last night?
THE Ramon Ortiz?
Lord have mercy on my rough and rowdy ways.
There was some seriously bad MI defense going on for RR
Which explains the 3 I-Cubs runs; don’t have any idea why RR couldn’t hit Ortiz worth a darn. Just bad luck and good defense, I suppose.
MB finally comes to Salem for a 4 game set starting tonight.
I can’t wait to get out and catch a few of these games over the weekend. According to the probables it looks like Erlin, Loux and Ross will start the 3 games this weekend. I’m hoping to get out and get some good photos/video of those guys while they are in town.
Looking forward to it.
It is a great thing to know the season for speech and the season for silence.

some quotes re: the two flukey hits allowed ...
“Ramirez hit the highest fly ball I’ve ever seen and it was just that time of the night, we completely lost it,” Wieland said. “I was the only one in the park who saw it. And so I was on the third-base line, I lost it and then I see it coming back down, but it was behind me. And I kinda dove back to get it and missed it and kinda fell on my butt. It was definitely a strange play.”
Wieland said he used his fastball to set up his breaking stuff and keep hitters off-balance. He used that approach against Eury Perez in the sixth.
.
“I bounced a curve in the dirt and [Perez] hit it for a base hit — he swung, it bounced in front of the plate and I guess the ball had some serious English on it,” Wieland said.
Wieland
It’s uncommon to see a young arm possess such advanced secondary command. Wieland can drop his CB in the dirt or he can locate it for strikes. Quite a weapon.
Wieland: 90 Hi-A innings, 103 Hi-A strikeouts, 13 HI-A walks

I doubt you would get many Royals prospect fans to believe the Ramirez is on the same level as those two.
Duffy has been unreal, especially his K/BB of 33/6. He should be in the Royals bullpen right now, if not the rotation.
Duffy probably has a higher ceiling than Ramirez, especially if Duffy has really found something in his changeup as a few reports suggest. I might have to drive over to Omaha and watch one of his starts.

Just read Duffy's bio, and he was ranked the 4th best Arizona League prospect in 2007. The Rangers
had Beltre at #2 and Font at #5 on that list. Michael Main would’ve been under consideration for the top spot if he hadn’t been moved to the NWL.

So Meyer, Stilson, Beede, Michael Kelly still out there as far as pitchers..Fisher is a nice prep player but has a strong commitment to Va. It’s probably one of those pitchers to me. Meyer has the best pure stuff but Stilson is probably a more complete pitcher, has a lighter workload and could be up contributing in the show the quickest…thoughts?? 6'5" 195
huge awesome righty. and what I’m reading suggests that he’ll be able to fill out and the already nice fastball will get even nicer.
7) Michael Kelly RHP, West Boca Raton HS (FL)
Kelly is one of the top right-handers in the 2011 draft, and he may also offer some of the best projection in the class as well. At 6’5" and 180 lbs, he has the ideal pitcher’s frame; He is extremely long limbed and lanky with tons of room to grow into. With his big body, Kelly also gets a very good down hill plane on his pitches which include a fastball in 89-92 range that has touched 94, a mid 70’s curveball, and a high 70’s change-up; all of which he can throw for strikes. His delivery is very fluid and loose, and the ball jumps out of his hand. His delivery also allows him to get into a pretty good fielding position on the mound. He does have a tendency to get a little long in the back for his wind up, but it is correctable. Michael Kelly is one of the more polished arms in the class and offers tremendous upside. He should bring plus pitchability and athleticism to any organization that takes him, and in his case that should be in the first round of the 2011 draft.

Touch? yes
He has touched 93-94 already. I don’t think he’ll do it very often though. Everything I’ve read suggests he’ll sit around 90-92 at best.
I haven't really seen that
I’ve heard him say that his fastball will be comfortably plus when he matures. I took that as sitting 93-95 and ramping it up to 97 when he had to

That's probably Goodwin but
we just signed Leonys Martin, so do we need another CF prospect? He has the potential to be a 5 tool player if his power develops. He was also a football WR. Goetzman is an interesting prospect because he’s drawing rave reviews from scouts. Currently plays SS in HS, but would move to COF. Has great power/speed potential, but I’m hesitant at the moment because there are very few scouting reports out there and he’s had more helium than just about any other prospect. Nimmo is another COF, but has average speed. Doesn’t have a HS baseball team because he’s from Wyoming, so he’s raw but has plenty of potential. Beede and Osich are also still available at pitcher.

sorry guys, Susac was already gone(went boston at 26)
The ex-pitcher in me went prep arm again…Tyler Beede…just seems like the pitching is so deep here that you can still get prep arms that are top 15 in most drafts…i realize he is a Vandy commit but I couldn’t get past the 6’4 200 that is already hitting 94-95…

This is the 6'9 pitcher from Kentucky right?
The one that sits mid 90s getting up to triple digits, with a hammer curve?
Since I have ESPN insider, why not use it...
Analysis: Hit 100 in a recent scrimmage with good sink on the fastball and a wipeout slider, but bad results and perceived lack of toughness prevent his top-of-the-draft stuff from putting him at the top of the draft.
That's from Feb. This is more recent...
Analysis: Meyer has top-of-the-draft stuff, with results finally catching up to the scouting report. Could be this year’s Matt Harvey, returning from draft perdition to the top 10-15 picks.
A quick search on him makes it look like he needs some work.
Has a ton of potential though.

IMO (from reading scouting reports and watching video)...
Meyer has great stuff, but he has serious command issues. So while Kelly doesn’t throw as hard yet (90-94), his FB could add more velo as he grows, it has great movement, and he commands it well.
If the Rangers were going to take two pitchers, CW13 made good picks. Kelley has a very high ceiling with a great fastball, good command, and secondaries that while raw, show some potential. He may be the most projectable pitcher in the draft. Beede has a FB that is straight(ish) and sits 90-92, but he has a GREAT changeup. The one at 3:10 in this video is damn sexy.
"Certainly, we were penalties, and we stopped ourselves." - Les Miles
I agree. Kelly is the one I've attached to, even if it's irrational since I know practically nothing about all of them lol
Also, I listened to an interview Kelly did for a local news station...
and it sounds like there won’t be too many signability concerns with him. He said that college is a back up plan if “pro ball doesn’t work out.” Basically, pay him his money and he’ll sign.
"Certainly, we were penalties, and we stopped ourselves." - Les Miles
Beede
“Beede features four pitches, each of which has at least average potential. His fastball sits in the low 90s, but he can dial it up to 94-96 mph. He also throws a circle-changeup which looks like it’s going to be his best secondary pitch. He also throws a curveball, which with a little tightening could be a pretty decent pitch as well.”
good interview with him

- Nolan Ryan has reportedly taken a special interest in Wieland since before he was drafted. Mike Hindman observed evidence of this in spring training (scroll to the bottom of the article).
You’ll never guess who drove over from the big league game to watch Joe Wieland pitch. A hint: he has seven MLB no-hitters and appears to have some sort of job with the Rangers. And it didn’t take long to see why Mr. Ryan is so taken with young Mr. Wieland: Wieland is a badass.Even Rhadigan-lovin’ Evan Grant commented on the Ryan/Wieland connection back on 2/18/2010 –
.
He loves to bust hitters way inside with his hard, heavy fastball. He backed one hitter off the plate by about five inches. And when they are starting to think about how bad it will hurt if he comes in any more, he works the outside corner (on one occasion with an excellent change). Wieland dropped a couple of promising curves with solid 11-5 shape as well, though he had trouble commanding that pitch.
RHP Joe Wieland: Nolan Ryan took a shine to Wieland during the Rangers’ draft meetings, then followed him closely after the club took him in the fourth round in 2008. Wieland went 5-1 with a 1.44 ERA in an impressive first season pitching in the Arizona League. He followed it up with an equally impressive instructional league, during which Ryan met with him on several occasions.
ya know ...
… when you read this Wieland Q&A from 11/2009 and realize he was just 19 at the time, it’s kinda easy to understand why this guy is being successful.
I do remember that, thanks for digging it up.
He seems like a heady young man.

I am kind of watching this game on milb.tv
the first strikeout of the 5th was a inside pitch (wasn’t really low) that tied up the hitter
On the second strikeout of the inning, Neil Ramirez accomplished what CERN could not: he created a mini black hole that bent space-time between the mount and home plate.

It's been a recurring theme of his season this year. He, truly, was on the cusp of Cubs ML roster during ST.
Promote Mike Olt to Round Rock!
So was Wellemeyer
Wellemeyer blew most of his velo and location in his warmup, sadly (for him)
On the other hand—despite stats telling me one thing, eyes told me Diamond really had nothin’ compared to Wellemeyer and by his own admission Welley didn’t have it yesterday either
Ramirez has to have 25 fouls today.

draft class
good point, it’s strong enough to push him out of the top 25 unless he goes absolutely nuts on AAA the rest of the year.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
This draft class is strong and deep, but I'm not sure there are more than a few definite top-25 guys in it that will be put there immediately.
If that makes sense.
Two are for sure— Cole and Rendon, but who else at the top is a definite top-25 prospect immediately?

I think if a HS guy can do it, it's more likely to be Bundy.
but I still don’t think a HS guy will come out this year and be in the top 25.
Starling and Lindor are good
but I doubt they’ll be able to get into the top 25 this year. Starling has ridiculous potential, but he’s also extremely raw.
To clarify.
Obviously not all 6. I think Starling once people get a better look at him will be. Same with Bundy.
Any of the other 4 could make it based upon how high the evaluator is on that guy.
Starling?
You really think he’ll move up more? He’s been shooting up for almost a year now. I think the present hype has actually gone too far now. I think he has all of the potential in the world. I’ve seen him hit an opposite field HR over 400 ft for team USA, he has great speed, a good eye at the plate when I’ve seen him, and he is rail thin. When he fills out, he should develop good power. I just don’t think he is developed enough to be a Top 25 guy this year, not to mention I don’t think he’ll sign until the last minute, so he’ll barely play this year.
Yes.
The present hype is in line with where his ceiling is; he has the type of ceiling that people will salivate over enough to put him in a top 25.
You're right about him signing on deadline day though.
Forgot about that.
That's kinda my point
A HS kid has to be basically transcendent to come out and IMMEDIATELY be a top-25 talent. If there was such a prospect, I’m not sure why he wouldn’t be the clear-cut choice at 3 behind Rendon and Cole.

Don't know about clear-cut...
But, talent-wise, Starling’s prominent in the discussion. KLaw ranks him 3rd after Cole & Rendon. The Nebraska commit just makes it very difficult. Most mocks have him going to the Royals @ 5 because of the hometown thing and because they think the Royals will pay him enough.
If Dayton Moore has a brain
He will pay him enough.

To my way of thinking regarding Ramirez, though
I see Ramirez as a possible top 25, but in the 20-25 range. It would only take a couple of draft guys ahead of him to knock him out of the top 25.

Erlin's 4th inning - GO, FO, GO
Clubhouse nickname is Merlin. 2nd time thru the 2,3,4 hitters – took about 15 pitches.
Erlin's 5th inning - FO, FO, K
All the plays seem to be routine. Can’t recall anybody having to sweat a ball in play yet.
Erlin's 6th inning - popout, K, K
pxp guy said the only ball 3 was to the opening batter of the night.
Erlin's 7th inning - FO, K, GO
3rd time thru the heart – it went well. Erlin has two strikes on you before you can adjust your cup.
Dude just needs to be promoted to Frisco already.
Erlin + Myrtle Beach isn’t proving to be a fair combination.
yeah, the Carolina League will be happy to lose him to AA
20 consecutive men down after the HR – Bell relieves him to start the 8th
I caught 4 innings of Erlin's start tonight in Salem.
I missed the first 3 innings but took some notes that I’ll write up in a fanpost after the weekend. My goal is to make all 3 games from tonight-Sunday. Erlin was magnificent tonight and it’s really a shame he took the loss.

I would kill to know what their internal pecking order is.
I would think Erlin would be the first one to be promoted. Then maybe Loux because of his age. That would open a spot for Grimm to move up, which would then open a spot for Luke Jackson.
If I had to guess on the first one to go
I’d say probably Wieland.
Some #'s on Wieland
19 straight innings without a BB
58% Groundballs on the year
27.7% SO on the year

Anybody know anything about Taylor Guerrieri?
I just realized he’s 20 minutes up the road in North Augusta, SC.
Law...
Guerrieri is one of the top prep arms in this year’s draft, showing huge velocity with a knockout curveball and a good frame. I’ve had scouts tell me it’s the best raw stuff of any high school pitcher in this draft, sitting 92-97 in most outings with a knockout breaking ball and a body to match.
Although I read somewhere else that his velo was starting to dip. Also hard to buy the “best raw stuff of any high school pitcher in this draft” statement considering Bundy is in this class.
Not sure what this means...
BAHighSchool Taylor Guerrieri’s season concluded earlier in the week. He faced 208 batters this spring. Allowed just 24 hits, 6 for extra bases…
he is a fuckin stud...most drafts would be top 5 perhaps...heard he hit 97-98

Haven’t pitched in, what, three weeks?
A little bit. I did some googling this morning to see if anything had been posted. nada.
But, I also understand that if is back injury is from compensating for other deficiencies in his motion, then it might take longer to not only get his back in shape but also come up with a plan to improve his motion.
I’m just hoping that’s the case and that they haven’t found something worse.

Scott Servais talk two weeks ago (?) on the radio about how Scheppers was in Arizona to work on his core strengthening or some such (JC did confirm that Scheppers was (is?) in Arizona). I have no clue what that process involves but I imagine that process takes longer than a week. I think the Rangers are doing that to make sure its not one of those recurring injury but I’m skeptical about the whole thing.
Back injuries are no joke.
I have no problem with them letting him take his time to come back.

unless the rangers have travis harrison as far and away the best player left on the board, I don’t know how I’d feel about drafting a 3B when you still have kelly, beede, cron, and dillon maples still on the board

especially one that won't stick at 3B
<blockquoteWhile some scouts (many actually) have expressed some concern over the stiffness in Harrison’s swing, it hasn’t affected his ability to crush high-school pitching.>
Another question mark for Harrison is his long-term position. He doesn’t have great footwork at third, so he’ll likely end up in the outfield.

I know we need position players, but I'm a sucker for high-potential arms.
You can never have enough. I think it would be easier to trade high potential arms for high potential bats than it is to trade high potential bats for high potential arms. Plus, it is easier for Texas to sign a hitter in free agency than it has been with pitchers.

I've seen a 7 on it from other sources
I’m confident in my ability to scout, but when sevens or eights are involved, I get happy feet. It’s not easy to throw a “well above-average at the major league level” grade on a low-level minor leaguer; it makes quite a statement and you need to stand behind it without hesitation. I could have thrown a seven on the glove, but I had enough doubt in the grade that I brought it down a half-step. Call it a slight hedge or call it a lack of fortitude, but I just didn’t feel comfortable standing behind such a high grade.
That said, I might throw a seven on a low-level hitter in the next week. I’m still debating it. I guess that suggests, using my own logic, that I should lower the grade. I’m just not sure. I love the hit tool that much. I see a future .300 hitter if the strength improves. We shall see.
Is it one of our hitters?

Doobie
I put a 55/60 on his future tool, meaning I think he could hit in the ~.285 range at the major league level when he reaches developmental maturity. Not many plus hit tools at that level. I think Alberto has the raw hit tool to hit .300 some day. Lacking plus speed and strength could limit him, though.
I was thinking #legend

Not hit tool
Alfaro has two 70 grade futures in his collection (arm/power) but he’s #TheLegend. Jordan Akins might have a few sevens in his future as well. That guy is a toolshed. He might actually have the highest tool-based ceiling in the system. Unfortunately, he is a lottery ticket.
Any thoughts on Johan Yan?
He’s off to a great start this season. Possible late innings arm down the road, too early to tell?
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
Yan
He’s the type of reliever that needs to prove it all the way up the chain. If he can get AAA hitters out, I’ll start to believe. Right now? It’s interesting and I’m reading the reports, but its a gimmick to me until it isn’t, if that makes any sense.

West has a serious arm on the mound (I say on the mound, because his raw arm only graded in the 55/60 range at 3B), but aside from a few success stories, most conversions don’t produce major league quality arms. The Rangers have a few on their resume which makes this worth monitoring.
Velocity gives West a great start, but learning how to pitch is the difficult obstacle in this equation.
So, how exactly did this happen?
Where did this arm strength come happen? Or is it a matter of the throwing motion leading to very different skillsets?

His raw arm strength at 3B didn't translate to a 7 or 8 arm at the position
But on the mound, under those specific conditions, that arm strength was able to emerge. Macumba had a 7 arm (at least) behind the plate. He doesn’t have a 7 (at least) FB on the mound.
It’s above my pay grade.
Would you encourage
all position players to devote time to throwing from the mound to discover if they had this hidden potential?
West probably always had more potential as a pitcher, and if he’d been one during his high school years he’d likely be a much better prospect now.

Just because it cracks me up:

#Rangers LHP Robbie Erlin has faced 68 batters in his last three starts. 63 of those 68 made outs.

You'd have to wake up pretty Erlin in the morning to get that by the drug testers.

He saw them on the family crest sitting above your fire place
while he was sitting outside your window. Nothing to worry about.
It was on his signet ring, he punched me in the forehead.
So I see it every time I go to the restroom…ouch.

So ...
Send Melo back to extended to work on things until Spokane kicks off? Give Buckel his spot in the roto? Assign Luke to HIC to tandem with Rojas or Buckel for a few weeks until Summer promotions start?
That seems unpossible

ya know ...
Luke is older, a higher draft pick and supposedly looking fantastic in AZ. Don’t know why I have him deferring to Buckel in the above scenario. Give Luke Jackson Melo’s roto spot and tell Buckel to make iorange’s mom some dinner. harrumph
I wish Biannucci was a real prospect.

ditto for Mendonca
Olt and Villanueva will both climb over his carcass in the next couple years.

BABIP, a few more K's, and nine months are all that tilt towards Miller's favor
Otherwise Wieland is outdoing him or sitting right beside him in every category.

I went back to the 4/18 MYR recap to check on some Wieland minutiae and came across this
The Pelicans got another good night out of their bullpen, starting with Andrew Doyle. The recent call-up from Hickory has filled in well for Neil Ramirez with three scoreless innings on Thursday and two more tonight. He set down all six batters he faced, striking out three as he posted zeroes in the seventh and eighth. Doyle (1-0) picked up the win after Adair put the Birds ahead for good in the seventh.
It… it went downhill from there for ADoyle.
