Around SBN: On Hazards And Hulks And Tigers, Oh My!

Eric Hosmer, who only has one flaw -- a 'c' rather than 'k' at the end of his first name -- is the symbol of the new Royals. His first ML hit came in this game, a 4-3 victory over the hated A's. Thanks to Drayton for picking and promoting Hosmer, so that on this day the A's would sink a game behind the Rangers.

So, um, well, I've long been a fan of Midwest baseball, and, every year, my hope is that the postseason

contains the Rangers and plenty of Midwest teams.

It’s probably unrealistic to think the Royals would be the odds-on favorite to win the Central before 2013, but guys with the talent level of Hosmer are on the way, and you never know how quickly they blossom.

Their SS can’t hit — and that trade trade was a sucky idea and is looking like a very marginal return on Greinke — but his defense has helped improve immensely their overall defense.

They’ve got a nice thread series going over at royalsreview, following their top prospects:
4/29 – 5/5

Gotta believe Danny Duffy will be up by June.

Ex Rangers aren’t doing all that much for them, though:
Treanor, .197/.347/.311
Pina (AAA), .200/.321/.222
Smith (AA), .242/.266/.323

There are probably others in their org, but I do not have the player background skills of Newberg.

At any rate… Today’s the day that Hosmer will hit his first HR, and I am ecstatic that it will be a walkoff against the A’s.

Duffy should have already replaced Davies.

Given the state of the AL Central this year, their window may be opening sooner than expected.

No Kidding. They need to replace 2 or 3 of their starters.

There’s a good argument being made at royalsreview that the next callup should be Teaford to keep Duffy out of arbitration a bit longer.

Sullivan and Davies need to move into long-man or AAA depth status very soon. Hochevar probably needs a new role too.

Well, I just joined Royals Review.

I guess I’ll lurk there for a while and see if I get into it.

I don't understand either of the above two comments ...

and one of them even turned green. My LSBadar is broke or something.

I quit updating the Royals calendar

Too big a pain in the rear. One calendar is hassle enuff.

Yeah, I don't blame you.

I get the sense from reading what scouting is available that Odorizzi is close to Weiland, perhaps with a slightly better

fastball not quite as good secondary pitches… a step below Perez and Ramirez on what his upside is.

yeah, I'm way behind you on their farm details ...

but Odorizzi gives me the vibe that he’d fit into our MYR roto quite nicely.

by shroomer on May 9, 2011 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Close to Wieland?

Not sure about that one. I think just about everyone has Odorizzi as a much better prospect.

by LiamP on May 9, 2011 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I haven't read anything this spring, yet, but at the time of the trade his ceiling was 2/3.

Wieland still looks like 3/4. I’m not sure what to think of Ramirez. He was 2/3 when drafted. I would believe a scout that says he could be a 1b.

Lamb tonight

Tons of groundballs, which seems unusual for him, no walks, which also seems unusual for him, and few Ks, which seems usual for him.

Okay, this is the way the KC farm is structured ...
Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA) Roster
    Northwest Arkansas Naturals (AA) Roster
Wilmington Blue Rocks (A Adv.) Roster
    Kane County Cougars (A) Roster
    AZL Royals® Roster
    Burlington Royals® Roster
    DSL Royals® Roster
    Idaho Falls Chukars® Roster

I understand DSL and the AZRL, same as the Rangers. But can somebody describe for me how having an APP team and a PIO team compares to having just one NWL team, like the Rangers have? It looks like one team is a little younger than the other, instead of lumping them all together like a NWL team. Is that the basic thing going on here?

Also, Storm Chasers....

Good name or Great name?

or greatest name?

i kind of like the naturals (AA) logo:

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I think one is basically for their college drafted players

And the other is for the top high school draftees and then guys who were LA guys the year or two before who were in the RL the year before but aren’t quite ready for college age competition just yet

He needs the challenge of a higher level placement.

51:8 K:BB in 32 IP

That’s sick. That’s child abuse.

I would love to see a current scouting report on him.

Duffy looked legit in his ML debut. He was erratic, but

his low and inside fastball to RHers is great, and his curveball could be really, really good.

I think he might have a better chance at being a #2 than Holland, as it appears Duffy has a coherent thought running through his head from time-to-time.
