Numbers 2 and 3 on this list would make Dirk commit vicious heated pears.

At what point do you bail on Beltre?
That’s to either or both Jasons.

The tools give you reason to believe
the production gives you reason to abandon that belief. He needs to put it together soon. Very soon.
Could he be part of a trade this Summer?

Mike Olt - succeeding despite LSB's reaction to his pick
We should probably keep this in mind when we inevitably overreact to our draft selections this year.

Good luck with data connection
I subscribe to the MLB text alerts and I’m pretty sure I got a text with the Rangers’ first draft pick and probably the next couple of picks, too.

I just assumed after last year's gradutations
and the budget stopping signings like Purke and our budget-based 2011 draft… that it would be a few seasons before we’d be able to get this giddy again.
How fantastic

It could make him very good
We shall see how he develops. I’m not comfortable throwing that label on him at this point in the process. I will say that the ceiling could be very high.
Wow
I’ve heard his name a few times in the last year or so, but this puts him on my immediate prospect watch list. Spokane cannot start soon enough.
I remember when bigsteve tried to tell us he wasnt impressive
Because bigsteve saw one report that he threw 88 mph prior to J2 and bigsteve had no use for a 88 mph tossing righty.*
*I think it was bigsteve.

that Bush would be a QS everytime out.

I dont think I said he wasn't impressive
Just that the reports weren’t as impressive as the amount of money he got would lead you to believe.
Sorry that I temper my enthusiasm when it comes to the 16 year olds. If we got all excited about every 16 year old who threw 86+ mph we would be in for a lot of disappointment.
I think the issue
is trusting spotty pre-J2 reports over the Rangers’ (or any team’s) international scouting department that has been watching a high-dollar prospect for years. There were a lot of reports that said Martin Perez was a very iffy soft-tosser when he signed out of Venezuela.
Exactly
IIRC bigsteve based that entire discussion on some Internet reports and ignored the possibility that the Rangers LA guys knew more than the Internet reports.

My understanding was the reports were true about David Perez, right?
He went through a dead arm period, which may have been a blessing for the Rangers. I think it caused a lot of teams to back off. Seems like there is often a little luck involved in the J2 signings. We can’t forget how close Martin Perez came to being a Cardinal.
Yep that's true
he went through a dead arm period and the Rangers stuck with him a little longer than some others did.
I get that
Like I said I was just being cautious and probably took that a bit too far if I said he was not impressive.
it is about time for Texas to have their King Felix type of uber prospect
I know you're still struggling to find your way in LSB but you'd probably feel more comfortable in one of the other threads that talks about

Any restrictions on trading him currently? We didn’t technically draft him…
I’d love to flip him for a RP sooner than later.
He signed as a free agent.
Why do you want to get rid of him?

I don't necessarily want to
But it makes the signing an immediate win if he has value in a trade this early on.
It’d just be a solid hedge against injury.
While he was an overdraft by the D-Backs
Wasn’t he still a solid 1st round talent?

How many of these prospects would it take to get Byrd and Wood or better yet Byrd and Dempster?

Well, CF is the glaring whole in the offense, and Byrd's defense is adequate even if it isn't on par with Borbon.
Wood adds power arm depth to the 7-8 inning group, and he can close games should Feliz never get out of his funk.
Dempster, well, he would provide SP depth during playoffs and insurance should Ogando’s performance begin to slide. In fact, he would allow the Rangers to move Ogando back to the BP if they felt the innings were beginning to wear on Ogando.
For next year, the Rangers could ask, before trading for Dempster, whether he has any interest in returning to the closer role.
Promote Mike Olt to Round Rock!
Byrd is also out for like 6-8 weeks

No Font huh?
Next time JD does a chat type thing or something i wish I, or someone, would ask him about the decision to burn one of Fonts options rather than 60 day him and save the option. Also I wonder if this means once he comes back from TJ he will be fasttracked out of the pen rather than continue the starter experiment with him.
Not an expert
But this came up with Tucker – I don’t think they burn an option. You have to be active so many days in the season. Te 60 day decision is more about pay. I believe if on 60 he would get major league split. I could be wrong though.
Jack Daddy
From BB America
Every played added to a 40-man roster for the first time is granted three option years, allowing the team to assign that player to the minors that year without having to pass him through waivers. A player can move back and forth from the majors to the minors multiple times in a given year, and it still counts as the use of just one option. After a player’s options are expended, he has to clear waivers before he can be assigned to the minors.
In some circumstances, baseball rules allow for a fourth option. A player receives a fourth option if he has less than five seasons of pro experience. Draftees who immediately sign a major league contract will qualify unless they reach the majors quickly and stick there. Otherwise, they’ll have their three options exhausted after their first three years in pro ball. Guthrie falls into this category.
A season is defined as any year in which the player spends 90 days on the active list. Short-season and Rookie leagues don’t last 90 calendar days, so a player assigned to those leagues for an entire year won’t accrue a season of pro experience. Also if a player has a long-term injury, he usually won’t be credited for a season that year. (The exception is if he goes on the disabled list after spending 60 days on an active list, in which case the DL time counts as service time.)
Brown signed in 1999 and the Dodgers placed him on their 40-man roster in 2002, meaning they and the Indians have used up his options to send him to the minors the last three years. But Brown will get a fourth option because this counts as only his third season of pro ball for option purposes. He spent 1999 in Rookie ball, missed all of 2000 with Tommy John surgery, spent 2001 in the short-season New York-Penn League and pitched in just one game in 2003 because he had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow.
Jack Daddy
Confirmed
You accrue major league salary if on a d.l. Tis was the reason rangers didn’t d.l. somebody last yr. I forget who now. Maybe the latin kid we traded for Cantu – damn my brain is losing it – cant think of his name. Saw him at Frisco at least twice, But it’s really just a 40 man issue. Like I mentioned, it’s not an option issue b/c you don’t burn one.
Jack Daddy
Sorry 4 mult replies to self
Pitcher was Omar poveda. We finally 60 day-ed him to clear room for Smoak. We held out until then I recall b/c didn’t want to pay him his maj league split. Make sense?
Jack Daddy
See this is where the intricasies of the rule are confusing
Because Font was assigned to Mrytle Beach which is a full season league.
Im not saying you are wrong I would just like a little more clarification. I know all about the 4 option rule, and due to the Tucker thing I now know about the SS and RK leagues not counting toward pro experience. I also know that if he is on the 60 he gets paid the ML minimum.
Poveda last year may have had more to do with the fact we were broke so even that little expense was un-necessary
But with Font its unclear. I guess because he spent 07 and 08 in the AZL then even if he burns his three options he would also get a 4th option year but thats kinda what I am wanting cleared up.
So Tucker still has an option because of SS/RK ball?
Interesting. Didn’t know that.

Font wasn’t considered.
