Tomas on BA's hot sheet...
The Scoop: At 5-foot-8, 175 pounds, Telis doesn’t have your prototypical catcher’s build, and the 175 may be a little on the light side of reality. Believe it or not, the Rangers actually signed Telis as a shortstop out of Venezuela for $130,000 in 2007, but they immediately moved him behind the plate because of how they expected his stocky body would develop. The Rangers had to teach him how to put on his catcher’s equipment four years ago, but he’s always been able to hit, something he’s done plenty of in his full-season debut. The switch-hitting Telis has excellent plate coverage and a knack for putting the barrel to the ball, which is why he’s struck out in just 13 of his 236 trips to the plate and hit .316/.361/.456 on the season.

This is what I remember
but Erlin has just shot up the this year thanks to his performance, he’ll probably skip Ross on all Top 20 lists at the end of the year (depending on how he acclimates to AA)
There is zero doubt that he has already left Ross far in his wake.

I have no idea, but I can see why it would be.
A lot of the hitters (including ours) seem to get overwhelmed easily by guys that are much older than they are. A couple of nights ago, for example, I noticed that the starter against us had 5 Ks in the first two innings. Then I looked and saw that he was 21 and facing guys who were 17.

From Badler
am (Texas): Has the Rangers system climbed into the top 5 overall? New additions like Leonys Martin, Martin Perez bouncing back and progression by the likes of Profar, Erlin, Olt, Ramirez, Wieland etc has Rangers fans feeling pretty good.
Ben Badler: It’s taken a step forward. Perez, Profar, Erlin and Olt are all better prospects than they were coming into the season, then you have breakouts of guys like Neil Ramirez and Joe Wieland and the addition of a premium prospect like Leonys Martin, yeah, it’s a system on the rise.

Saquan Johnson might have a legitimate claim to being the fastest player drafted this year
6.28-6.3 60 is insane. I haven’t found many higher after a quick google search.
Where did you see that time?
This is the one I found from the Area Code Games.
Henry, a senior-to-be at Centennial, earned a spot on the Milwaukee Brewers Area Code “white” team by displaying tremendous speed during three days of trials. He ran a 6.5-second 60-yard dash the final day that scouts were observing.
Cole has a report up of him running a 6.38 at an event.

Here is another article on him. This one from ESPN RISE lists him at 6'1
During SPARQ (speed, power agility, reaction and quickness) testing Thursday, Henry had one of the fastest times in the 60-yard run, finishing in 6.47 seconds and had a 33-inch vertical.
it was in his local paper so it very well could have been embellished
Henry’s speed was on display recently when he ran a 6.2 60-yard dash at a Pittsburgh Pirates workout.

That would be ridiculously incredible.
Look at this: http://bronxbaseballdaily.com/2010/03/some-yankee-60-yard-dash-times/
Brett Gardner (College Freshman): 6.6
Derek Jeter (High School) 6.6
Greg Golson (High School) 6.4
Curtis Granderson (High School) 6.6
Slade Heathcott (High School) 6.7
Jamie Hoffman (College) 6.65
Austin Romine (High School) 6.7
Alex Rodriguez (High School) 6.5
I’m pretty positive Jeter can’t run a 6.6 anymore, and Alex can’t run a 6.5 (assumptions of course). But I wouldn’t be surprised if Gardner can run around a 6.3 by now.

And they don’t seem as self-righteous as some other prospect evaluators. Badler and Manuel are good to answer my questions on Twitter.

I always assume the Rangers are active.
I truly believe the exhaust every resource they have available to find talent. They look everywhere.
We have yet to reel in the huge J2 fish, which is interesting.
I believe Profar was the highest bonus we’ve ever given a J2 guy (at least in JD’s tenure), and I’m waiting for us to sink our teeth into a bigtime J2 outfielder.

I don't think thats their strategy down there.
I don’t think they believe in paying a 16-17 year old J2 player 3-4 million. There’s too big of a bust potential. I think they’d rather spread that out among 4-5 players and increase their odds of one hitting. Maybe they’ll find someone that is an exception though.
I remember someone (maybe Parks?) saying that strategy is absolutely the way to go down there
We’ve had this conversation before.

They were willing to pony up for Yona.
I would like a mixture of those two things. And more wiling to pay for power hitter or picther more than any other type of player.
Yep
but it’s no indicator of how things generally go. A guy like Ynoa is a great invesment. He was being touted as a generational talent.

another crop of college pitchers to disappont
I know you're still struggling to find your way in LSB but you'd probably feel more comfortable in one of the other threads that talks about
weather, fashion, video games, uniform colors, etc. . - Josey Wales 5/18/11
truth is one or two college pitchers each draft to work out is about
all you can hope for. That’s not who Texas targets and that’s not their drafting strength. Tepesch and Grimm last year.
Scheppers and Doyle (he got injured not sure his status now). Rodebaugh is another. You still need guys to fill out rosters because unfortunately not ever player on every minor league team is a legit prospect. If the Rangers take 35 college guys then get worried but only 6 seniors means there’s some decent potential in this new group and the JC guys are usually only one year removed from HS so there’s still projection there. Heck they obviously believe in Will Lamb’s arm. Same with Hendricks and the others. Let’s see what they do in short season ball before we call them a bust.
just seems like anyone at Spokane the last couple of years
that I have even halfway turned a blind eye to has ended up doing much of nothing.
I know you're still struggling to find your way in LSB but you'd probably feel more comfortable in one of the other threads that talks about

hmm
well this year’s spokane roster might be special. If that’s where David Perez, McBride, Lamb, Hendricks, and one other are the rotation that’s pretty darn nice.
I haven’t done a study on it but it seems the Rangers focus on HS players because they get to develop the talent, that said you can’t take 50 high school kids in a draft. When they do go college, they’ve been pretty decent there too especially in later rounds.
Its not a win or a loss at this point as only time will tell if this strategy is a good one but betting on tools rather than ceiling can result in a superstar as opposed to five Tommy Hunters in your rotation.
went and looked at last year's draft - FWIW
The first 5 college pitchers were Grimm, Reyes, Osborne, Tepesch and Rodebaugh. So far they’ve held their own in A-ball pretty well – Reyes sorta kinda – and Osborne has struggled his last few outings. Not much to show after them though from the 2010 draft.
So Lamb, Hendricks, Sadzeck, Williams and Eickoff will all have to be doing solid to solid-ish in A-ball a year from now to match them.
that's not really a fair comp
because most of the guys listed from this year’s draft were CC or JC guys, right? Lamb is transitioning to pitching full time and Hendricks and Williams are legit 4 year college guys, but Sadzeck and Eickhoff are guys who are only a year or two out of HS.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
So, if a year from now the 2011 first five are doing okay in A-ball ...
it will reflect even better on the scouting dept than the solid first five from the 2010 draft? Now all we gotta do is try and remember to check on all this a year from now. doh
I am irrationally bullish on Rua
he’s got the 17th round going for him, and he put up some strong offensive numbers for a SS.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

Erlin
Was at the game last night, Erlin looked amazing. He can paint those corners with ease.
I’ve seen a lot of top pitchers roll through frisco for the riders and the visitors and this was probably the most impressive performance i’ve seen.
There were more scouts than usual there probably due to the time of year but they were all writing quite long notes about erlin, especially the royals scouting coordinator.

mostly mid to upper 80s
mid 70s on some of the breaking pitches.
in his last few innings he started hitting low 90s

interesting
I guess i’ve thought of Erlin as a 90-92 guy, but might be a little high in terms of consistent velo. good to see he gets stronger later in games, but I’d guess his fb straightens out with more velo.
By this time next year, Erlin, Martin and Ramirez will be helping the big league team.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
most of what i saw was 86-89
he was mixing speeds a lot though and hitting those corners with ease
he started hitting upwards around 92 more in the 5th and 6th from what i saw

kelly looked pretty bad last night
i was pretty excited to see him and erlin face off though
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
his fangraphs page is pretty interesting
his fastball is a tick down this year, which shouldn’t have too much effect, but the pitch has been far less effective this year.
Still, if I had to bet, then I’d say yeah, he’ll be fine.

I imagine several of the college guys will go to Spokane. There’s no reason to truly challenge the HS kids if they’re as raw as most people think. Thing is though promotions are going to start happening too so someone is going to Hickory to fill their future voids.
Fun times ahead.

now y'all are just getting picky
but there are so damn many outfielders they’re going to have to put someone in Spokane because I can’t imagine Lane, Sierra, or Radcliffe being ready for Spokane yet.

wonder what the odds are
of one or more of them becoming at least Engel Beltre (trade value maybe before this year). One out of 10? Pure numbers alone someone has to turn out right?
Wouldn't be shocked if he goes back to the AZL
In fact I’d say that’s probably most likely.
As raw as Lamb is, I wouldn't be surprised if he is out in AZ this year and then make a bigger jump next year.
I could buy that
a guy like Greg Williams, Sossamon or Kline getting a spot up there while they work on specific things with Lamb in AZ where there’s a bigger development staff and more coaches for one-on-one instruction.
I think Victor Payano might get an opportunity in Spokane
though he’s probably on the AZL/Spokane bubble. He has pitched really well, has a good feel, and his stuff has continued to progress.
hope they just don't play him

Who is he and should I in anyway be excited by him? He missed all of 2009 which may be why he’s either age appropriate or old for Hickory but he’s doing extremely well there.
IIRC, struggles defensively but can hit.
I think either JC or Jamey said he absolutely raked during extended.

Who's hot - last 10 games ...
Tea – .289/.386/.526 – 13 Ks tho
Chad Tracy – .316/.395/.868 – 8 Ks, 5 HRs – a power righty with a .536 OPS vs LHP
Martin – .438/.537/.688 – 4 Ks, 3 CS – Borbon is stuck between a rock [Martin] and a hard place [Chavez]
Ruiz – .278/.372/.528 – only 4 Ks – I don’t get where this guy fits into the Ranger ecosystem
Mendonca – .310/.362/.595 – looks pretty AA savvy on TV, would AAA hurt his trade value?
Beltre – .250/.286/.300 – JC made a cogent TV argument about why even mega-skeptics like me should give him one last shot
The Borginator – .341/.372/.488 – I could see Adair and Straussie swapping farm rosters someday
Garcia – .341/.400/.537 – ITS ALIVE!! Just keep getting on base, you munchkin.
Selen – .342/.390/.658 – 15 Ks tho, kid’s got swat
Telis – .413/.413/.522 – 1 K, 0 BB – turns 20 next week – if he can get his C strong we might have something here
Profar – .310/.383/.452 – 0 HRs tho, The Curacao Pow Pow Pow
Herrera – .385/.455/.513 – all these freakin’ A-ball IFers, sheesh
Deglan – .265/.390/.294 – SCALDING, for him anyway
I noticed Delgan raised his avg above .200
Wonder what the reports are on his D and intangible. Don’t forget, he is only 19yo.

Don't look now, his K% is almost below 30%
Meanwhile, Skole’s K% is now at 25%. The K% of both of them has been decreasing gradually over the past month or so.
Skole needs to get a few XBH.

the kid seems to have an intriguing power/speed combo
although he also seems a bit prone to the strikeout. If he can really play SS, which is what we announced him as, then he could be a bit of a sleeper.

I really thought the Rangers would take a college catcher

Season stats
78 IP | 69 H | 4 BB | 90 SO
Amazingly, coming in to today his FIP was actually lower than his ERA. 2.13 ERA/2.10 FIP
Yeah, I knew they were pretty absurd.
It was enlightening to hear Parks and Cole say that he has a fairly low ceiling for somebody who just put up those numbers. If it is true about his ceiling, then they should move him up. There seems to be a lesser need to let him gain complete mastery over a level first like you would want with the high ceiling guys like Perez, etc.

I missed it, what did they say?
I think i remember reading at one point that they said a #3 as a ceiling, but a #4 was his floor. Does that sound right? I also remember reading that he pretty much is what he is going to be, he just needs to continue to refine his stuff. He appears to be ready for a promotion, but I don’t think you push him any differently than the other pitchers. You set goals for him and move him as he meets them.
I would be hesitant to put any hard labels on Wieland. If he was able to pick up his new slider/cutter as quickly and easily as it appears, who knows what he can do.
Yeah, there's always a chance a guy can surprise you,
but I’m more apt to hold a high ceiling talent at a level in order to get them comfortable dominating that level before promoting him. Not so much with a Michael Kirkman or some such (not that Weiland is Kirkman).
Of course, the best counterargument to what I’m saying is that we would be ecstatic if Marteen put up those numbers at a level and would be ready for him to move on.

The Rangers lately
have been very, very good at selecting HS pitchers in the top rounds. More credit needs to be given to them for that. Buckel is the latest. I expect a lot from McBride eventually and some of these kids in this draft to do the same. Since this draft was so deep with pitchers that’s the direction they went but we’ll have to see what happens with the position players in the future. And, I’m not a professional or anything, but if he does get a cutter and 2-seamer up to his other pitches, it seems like that could do a lot to someones’ ceiling. What with having 3 different fastballs, two of which move in the opposite directions

That's something that may come
but you really need to see what his stuff does in AA right now. He has to fail or struggle before he adds another pitch. Maybe he needs that maybe his stuff as is is good enough because of his control. I don’t think you can label him in anyway right now.
I was already bullish on him
but no hitting the best hitting team in the league thru 7 in just his third AA start (which is commonly called the biggest jump in the minors) really cranked up the hype in my eyes. The kid is only a few months older than Martin.

Ugh
Im fearing that complacency setting in and hes going through a phase where he is sorta going through the motions. Promote the kid already and give him a swift kick in the ass.
When Perez puts together more than a few good starts in a row
and puts up Erlin or Wieland-like numbers from Myrtle Beach, then we can start talking about complacency. Until then, that’s ridiculous. He still has things to work on––particularly controlling his delivery and fastball command. It means he’s going to be inconsistent.
I don’t think complacency is as prevalent in prospects as fans think it is. They are constantly motivated to move up to the next level. They aren’t getting ‘bored’ because they’re doing well. There are certainly cases where they are no longer challenged nearly as much, but it doesn’t mean they have stopped working or trying.
by JasonCole on Jun 13, 2011 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions 5 recs
Not every 20 year old is Felix Hernandez
He’s being challenged by guys who are still older than him and many who are legit prospects too. That he’s repeating AA is not some indictment of him but rather shows a maturation process that’s not going as fast as delusional fans want.
This isn’t a swipe at you Jason but rather to point out to impatient Ranger fans that rushing guys with his kind of talent leads to lost years like CJ Wilson had. That Derek Holland had. You can add Colby Lewis in his first time though MLB and Matt Harrison. Its not uniform, one size fits all. If he’s up in Arlington by July of next year that’s a huge development success story and should be celebrated but if he’s not and he needs more time that’s not a failure on his or the Rangers part.
Can we please stop trying to throw the baby out because he hasn’t fully learned to walk by age one?
I agree with that
and I should also say that there are certainly players that are lazier than others and ones that work harder. But it doesn’t necessarily mean complacency. I just think complacency is thrown around all too often––generally whenever a good prospect goes into a slump.
I appreciate this very much,
but please note that bigsteve is rapidly becoming our village idiot.

If I used frustrated instead of complacent would that not make you as upset?
I dont mean anything about his work ethic or his future value. All I am concerned about is the fact he has seen a guy jump from High A to AAA after only a couple starts and stick in AAA. And now hes seen a guy jump from High A to AA after 6 weeks or so. All the while he is still sitting in AA going on 2 years now and hes started out the year looking great. Hes in the top 10 in all the major categories stats wise and while he still has flaws and stuff to work on he could get that work done while also getting the reward of a promotion, something he has worked his butt off for.
Sounds a lot like complacement to me
You’re saying the guy would lose motivation to succeed. What do you think complacency is? Either way, with all due respect, I think you’re out of your element here.

You're assuming that he doesn't simultaneously recognize that he has things to work on in AA, that the Rangers will reward him when they feel it is right, and that his time in AA is still valuable.
He may be 20 years old, but that doesn’t mean he is an impudent child who will stamp his feet when he feels slighted. And we don’t even know if he looks at it and says “I deserve a promotion!”
Shorter version: you’re assuming things about Perez you couldn’t possibly know and for which you have no basis.

I think he is also assuming things about the Ranger org.
They have likely communicated to Martin how they think he is doing, what he needs to work on and what the timetable is for promotion. bigsteve needs some patience. MP will be up in AAA this year and it will likely be more then a late season reward.

someone
is probably going to go unless Scheppers gets healthy and pitching soon but how much value does Mendonca really have? He’s a Leuke type throw in on a deal at best. There’s value in that to be sure. I’d rather move him than a young arm but let’s be honest in what he is and what that’s worth.
He was only drafted two years ago
and he’s hitting AA pretty well (.900+ OPS right now). If he has decent defense at 3B (and he supposedly did when we drafted him), then he could definitely have some value. There is a league wide dearth of 3B prospects right now, which helps.

this
I kinda like the late start because it means you can follow them and AZ without competing with the earlier east coast and TX start times.
AZ games
early games this year. Morning games, just like extended spring training. As someone that loves going to cover the AZL club, I’m not too happy about it. But yeah…it is what it is.
you still going to update your draft database?
any word on how things are progressing with any of these draftees? Some are obviously going to drag out this summer but I wonder about a kid like Fish. When he finishes his high school finals if they’ll go away and start talking numbers right away.
Yeah
that’s on the list for later today. I’m transcribing a few draft interviews and calling a few more draft picks, as well. I plan on calling Fish to try and get an interview with him.
Any luck reaching Castro?
I think he’s the biggest question mark among Rangers fans. I’d also be curious to hear from Cone about what the team has told him regarding changes to his swing/approach.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Trying to get in touch with Cone
I don’t have any contact info for Castro so that looks unlikely.
if you asked would the Rangers provide that info
at least his agent’s name or something? I don’t know what the protocol on something like that.
No idea but I wouldn't do that.
I try to bother the Rangers as little as possible.
I can understand that but
I’m sure they’d be happy to help. Dunno if they’d give you his info but they set up interviews all the time. You’re not their enemy and they know it so…
read an article
his high school team starts their finals tomorrow. Not sure what the format is or when they’ll finish but you may have to wait till after that.
as for my above post that should be:
they’ll go ahead and start…
Southwest Airlines goes there.
But, I see it’s $500-600 to from Dallas during Jul/Aug.
Probably, because of all the demand to see David Perez.

for the SAL. Baby steps for Skole.
Skole not falling flat on his face in Hickory
is a victory in and of itself. That’s my expectation of him this year and him improving the k/bb ratio as he goes is all I can realistically ask for. I will be happy if his current trend continues even if it plateaus.

Shows there wasn't much else
to choose from or that he was so damn good they couldn’t leave him off the roster. Osuna makes me question the whole process but I’ll take it and good for those players. I bet they appreciate it if nothing else.
Eight team league
means you’re compiling one All-Star team from four teams. So every year, if there’s a shared weak position, you’re generally going to get some weird choices.
Guess I didn't think about that as far as number of teams
since there are only 8 total teams and 4 teams per all-star team yeah guys who really shouldn’t be there may well be there because of lack of options. I don’t really care about minor league all star teams just seemed strange till you mentioned that fact.
must not be many catchers
Feliz isn’t exactly tearing it up down there, though his defense is an asset.

yeah, too many variables to choose from, IMO
even Melo, MDLS or Rojas could start out in the SPO roto
wait and see will probably be the easiest path
MDLS?

Highly doubt de los Santos
ever goes down there again. He’ll be back in Frisco when he’s healthy, I’d bet. Perhaps Myrtle Beach but I doubt it. Rojas will probably be in Hickory when he’s healthy again as well. Melo seems like a fit in Spokane because he’s too advanced for AZ and was overmatched in Hickory.
Melo in Spokane
might be a good step for him. He’s got stuff and I have no idea about his mental toughness but shipping all the way back to AZ might not be good. Spokane as a middle ground could work. In fact thinking about it I like this idea more and more.
And whatever comes out on opening day
things will certainly shift. Will the Rangers be aggressive and send the advanced HS lefty Kevin Matthews to Spokane if he signs early enough? Does Will Lamb go to Spokane when he signs? Does he work as a starter or reliever? Kyle Hendricks told me he’d be in the Spokane rotation, but will there definitely be room for him?
Will Lamb - only 24.2 IP this Spring
Yeah, I was wondering about him … if they signed him quick they might be able to really put some innings on his arm this summer as a starter maybe.
And I mentioned Rojas and MDLS as guys who might pitch a coupla weeks as a sort of rehab assignment before heading back to their true levels.
I WANT EVERYONE TO SIGN NAO.

Melo, Hanna, Perez, Hendricks, Grullon – could be your roto right there.
Well, IIRC, Weibley has been released ...
so there still may be some phantom names on there left over from last season.
How have all of you gone six deep
and no one mentioned that Sierra Jr. made the jump. I didn’t realize he hit that well in AZ last year. That he got the nod over the other outfielders on the roster says a lot. I can’t wait to see how he does there this year.
his first few at bats were terrible if I remember correctly
they were all spliting time and I’m sure he got a lot of time in the cage and internal work. if they didn’t think he could handle it they would put more college guys there. This is a positive that I hope he can handle. He’s got his dad’s tools from what scouting reports I read. That is something to dream on.
Weibley had Tommy John last week
Stanford got hurt during extended so he’ll probably be in AZ a bit longer.

I'm a bit more excited about Alvarez
than Kookaburra, and probably Melo, too.
Nelson Cruz - 2011 MVP
Kurkunka is a big
unknown and there’s excitement in that. Though I wonder how they’re going to manage workload of kids vs. college guys. Lamb hasn’t pitched much so giving him innings might not be a bad thing. Hendricks probably has they’ll want to limit him. Regardless there’s a lot to love here both position player and pitcher wise so there’s a reason to check box scores each night unlike the current Frisco and Round Rock affiliations. I can’t wait.

I'm really trying to remember a Spokane rotation that seemed this sexy.
There was 2004, when they had Hurley and Diamond.
In 2007, they had Brigham, Holland, Kirkman, Castillo. Feliz even made a start.
2007 is also the year their rotation, and much of the Spokane roster, became filled with sub-college age guys.
2008 had NeRa, Perez, Pimentel, Boscan.
It seems like 2011’s rotation looks better than 2007 and 2008.
Of the bullpen arms, I’m pretty interested in Hanna. He hasn’t gotten a lot of ink, but he walked almost noone last year in AZL, and his fastball is reportedly in the 89-91 range, maybe a tick higher.
Rock the J2, JD!
2008 was full of NaCl though
Boscan was a rock back then.

Late Aug and Sept of 2007
SPO had a roto of Holland, Feliz, Main, Brigham, Tatusko with Hunter in the pen.
This year doesn't seem to have as many tandem guys.
I recall Feliz as a tandem starter then.
Maybe Lamb-Perez (Santo) will tandem later in the season.
Otherwise, all of these folks have very significant number of innings last year.
Rock the J2, JD!
Perez and Payano are sexy.
Alvarez has pitchablity, IIRC, but doesn’t project much. Melo looks like a guy who will fall into the pen permanently soon. Kukuruda’s size and age look interesting, but not much known about him at all. West and Macumba in the pen are more interesting than these other 3 starters to me.
I was surprised not to see Vickerson's name on the Spokane roster
I assumed, since MSU got knocked out, that he would sign quickly as a senior and join them. But after his post-season heroics, maybe he’s taking a week off.
Or maybe they recognized his greatness and are sending him straight to Hickery.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
he'll probably be there
but a week off to soak everything in is probably a good break for the guy, physically and emotionally.

Lots of industry rumors that the #BlueJays had a pre-draft deal done

Good for them and I hope the Rangers have
an arrangement with a couple of our draftees. As long as everyone understands there really shouldn’t be a problem. If he’s there the team will draft him and if not then nothing concrete was broken. Why do people frown on these deals?
seems strange
In 2004, the Tigers signed Justin Verlander, the second overall pick and a clear stud, to a $3.14M deal. And now Tyler Beede, an intriguing prep arm but hardly a top tier guy, is getting $3M just 7 years later. That seems like quite an uptick.
Have salaries at the big league level gone up that demonstrably since 2004? Or are we seeing different inflation rates as teams start to place greater priority on the draft?
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
I'm a little surprised
we haven’t heard about any more signings at this point. We’ve hit our low hanging fruit, but I’d be shocked if our top five take too much longer. They can’t be looking for more than slot, can they? That just seems like looking a gift horse in the mouth on their part.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
My guess is another wave is about to come
Nick Martinez (18th rounder) was pulled from his Cape Cod League roster the other day. From what I’ve heard, he was pulled because he’s signing. So I’m guessing he and a few others are soon to be announced.
Matthews tweeted that he had a big week coming up

are there any other draftees we should be following in summer ball?

for some reason ...
I wanna say I saw that Nathan Harsh was told he’d get an offer after watching him play summer ball and he’d decide then. But I have no idea why I think that. Am I mixing him up with somebody else?
Someone posted an interview with him where he said that was the case.

I don't know why people are debating guys like Strausborger and Mendonca...
Yes. They are legitimate prospects. Should we start looking for ways to make them fit on our major league roster? Of course not. Are they top 5 franchise or top 100 baseball? Of course not.
But do they have legitimate trade value? Yes. They are both league appropriate age/experience wise, play solid defense at key positions and are hitting the ball very well. Using Sickels’ rudimentary system, I’d think they are both legit C+ to B- guys who are trending upward.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Mendonca is pretty easy to see why people lost hope quickly.
And I don’t think anyone expected him to do anywhere close to as well as he’s doing this year. A .930+ OPS in AA? Uhhh, yeah. I’ll take that from him.

and then some.
I’m trying to remember the last crop of talent coming through Spokane that collectively had a ceiling this high. They’ve been the Rangers’ affiliate since 2003, when Danks was there.

Someone posted this in the PGT yesterday...
Zach Fish Mike Stanton-ing a baseball. Sign him, please.
I win either way
He’s coming to Stillwater if he doesn’t sign.
But I’d rather he sign.

The Rangers brought him in for a workout before they drafted him
I would bet they sign him.

According to our writers on twitter
He makes 18 that have signed.
We knew of 14 before him by name, which means we’re missing 3.

new market inefficiency?
guys that will sign and play the month they are drafted. There is something to be said for not losing an entire season of development, I suppose.

Especially when there are developmental areas the Rangers have invested heavily in...
short and short-ish LHP (Kiker, Ross, Erlin)
swing mechanical flaws (Moreland, Skole)
high injury risk players (Scheppers, Loux, Payano)
The combination of extra developmental time and these overlooked players is clearly where JD is trying to get ahead of everyone else.
Rock the J2, JD!
Depends on the player

Do the Rangers scout "character" more than other teams?
Not that I’m asking you, just wondering out loud.
Rock the J2, JD!
Not as much as some organizations, I know.
The Rockies are nuts.

Yeah
I’m being a bit facetious. I think the Rangers do scout character more than most teams, and I don’t blame them. Given two players of roughly equal talent, the character guy is a better bet to reach his ceiling.
I’ll bet that most teams have some proprietary ways of evaluating character and the mental/psychological stuff. Seems like just one more way to make a marginal dent in baseball’s prospect attrition rate.
