Tomas on BA's hot sheet...
The Scoop: At 5-foot-8, 175 pounds, Telis doesn’t have your prototypical catcher’s build, and the 175 may be a little on the light side of reality. Believe it or not, the Rangers actually signed Telis as a shortstop out of Venezuela for $130,000 in 2007, but they immediately moved him behind the plate because of how they expected his stocky body would develop. The Rangers had to teach him how to put on his catcher’s equipment four years ago, but he’s always been able to hit, something he’s done plenty of in his full-season debut. The switch-hitting Telis has excellent plate coverage and a knack for putting the barrel to the ball, which is why he’s struck out in just 13 of his 236 trips to the plate and hit .316/.361/.456 on the season.

I have no idea, but I can see why it would be.

A lot of the hitters (including ours) seem to get overwhelmed easily by guys that are much older than they are. A couple of nights ago, for example, I noticed that the starter against us had 5 Ks in the first two innings. Then I looked and saw that he was 21 and facing guys who were 17.

Ben Badler: It’s taken a step forward. Perez, Profar, Erlin and Olt are all better prospects than they were coming into the season, then you have breakouts of guys like Neil Ramirez and Joe Wieland and the addition of a premium prospect like Leonys Martin, yeah, it’s a system on the rise.

Where did you see that time?

This is the one I found from the Area Code Games.

Henry, a senior-to-be at Centennial, earned a spot on the Milwaukee Brewers Area Code “white” team by displaying tremendous speed during three days of trials. He ran a 6.5-second 60-yard dash the final day that scouts were observing.

Here is another article on him. This one from ESPN RISE lists him at 6'1
During SPARQ (speed, power agility, reaction and quickness) testing Thursday, Henry had one of the fastest times in the 60-yard run, finishing in 6.47 seconds and had a 33-inch vertical.

That would be ridiculously incredible.

Look at this: http://bronxbaseballdaily.com/2010/03/some-yankee-60-yard-dash-times/

Brett Gardner (College Freshman): 6.6

Derek Jeter (High School) 6.6

Greg Golson (High School) 6.4

Curtis Granderson (High School) 6.6

Slade Heathcott (High School) 6.7

Jamie Hoffman (College) 6.65

Austin Romine (High School) 6.7

Alex Rodriguez (High School) 6.5

I’m pretty positive Jeter can’t run a 6.6 anymore, and Alex can’t run a 6.5 (assumptions of course). But I wouldn’t be surprised if Gardner can run around a 6.3 by now.

I don't think thats their strategy down there.

I don’t think they believe in paying a 16-17 year old J2 player 3-4 million. There’s too big of a bust potential. I think they’d rather spread that out among 4-5 players and increase their odds of one hitting. Maybe they’ll find someone that is an exception though.

by RangerMad on Jun 11, 2011 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions

truth is one or two college pitchers each draft to work out is about

all you can hope for. That’s not who Texas targets and that’s not their drafting strength. Tepesch and Grimm last year.

Scheppers and Doyle (he got injured not sure his status now). Rodebaugh is another. You still need guys to fill out rosters because unfortunately not ever player on every minor league team is a legit prospect. If the Rangers take 35 college guys then get worried but only 6 seniors means there’s some decent potential in this new group and the JC guys are usually only one year removed from HS so there’s still projection there. Heck they obviously believe in Will Lamb’s arm. Same with Hendricks and the others. Let’s see what they do in short season ball before we call them a bust.

hmm

well this year’s spokane roster might be special. If that’s where David Perez, McBride, Lamb, Hendricks, and one other are the rotation that’s pretty darn nice.

I haven’t done a study on it but it seems the Rangers focus on HS players because they get to develop the talent, that said you can’t take 50 high school kids in a draft. When they do go college, they’ve been pretty decent there too especially in later rounds.

Its not a win or a loss at this point as only time will tell if this strategy is a good one but betting on tools rather than ceiling can result in a superstar as opposed to five Tommy Hunters in your rotation.

by Hull Fan on Jun 11, 2011 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

went and looked at last year's draft - FWIW

The first 5 college pitchers were Grimm, Reyes, Osborne, Tepesch and Rodebaugh. So far they’ve held their own in A-ball pretty well – Reyes sorta kinda – and Osborne has struggled his last few outings. Not much to show after them though from the 2010 draft.

So Lamb, Hendricks, Sadzeck, Williams and Eickoff will all have to be doing solid to solid-ish in A-ball a year from now to match them.

by shroomer on Jun 11, 2011 2:22 AM CDT up reply actions

that's not really a fair comp

because most of the guys listed from this year’s draft were CC or JC guys, right? Lamb is transitioning to pitching full time and Hendricks and Williams are legit 4 year college guys, but Sadzeck and Eickhoff are guys who are only a year or two out of HS.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Jun 11, 2011 10:00 AM CDT up reply actions

So, if a year from now the 2011 first five are doing okay in A-ball ...

it will reflect even better on the scouting dept than the solid first five from the 2010 draft? Now all we gotta do is try and remember to check on all this a year from now. doh

I’ve seen a lot of top pitchers roll through frisco for the riders and the visitors and this was probably the most impressive performance i’ve seen.

There were more scouts than usual there probably due to the time of year but they were all writing quite long notes about erlin, especially the royals scouting coordinator.

I imagine several of the college guys will go to Spokane. There’s no reason to truly challenge the HS kids if they’re as raw as most people think. Thing is though promotions are going to start happening too so someone is going to Hickory to fill their future voids.

It was enlightening to hear Parks and Cole say that he has a fairly low ceiling for somebody who just put up those numbers. If it is true about his ceiling, then they should move him up. There seems to be a lesser need to let him gain complete mastery over a level first like you would want with the high ceiling guys like Perez, etc.

I missed it, what did they say?

I think i remember reading at one point that they said a #3 as a ceiling, but a #4 was his floor. Does that sound right? I also remember reading that he pretty much is what he is going to be, he just needs to continue to refine his stuff. He appears to be ready for a promotion, but I don’t think you push him any differently than the other pitchers. You set goals for him and move him as he meets them.

I would be hesitant to put any hard labels on Wieland. If he was able to pick up his new slider/cutter as quickly and easily as it appears, who knows what he can do.

by Tex2044 on Jun 12, 2011 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, there's always a chance a guy can surprise you,

but I’m more apt to hold a high ceiling talent at a level in order to get them comfortable dominating that level before promoting him. Not so much with a Michael Kirkman or some such (not that Weiland is Kirkman).

Of course, the best counterargument to what I’m saying is that we would be ecstatic if Marteen put up those numbers at a level and would be ready for him to move on.

The Rangers lately

have been very, very good at selecting HS pitchers in the top rounds. More credit needs to be given to them for that. Buckel is the latest. I expect a lot from McBride eventually and some of these kids in this draft to do the same. Since this draft was so deep with pitchers that’s the direction they went but we’ll have to see what happens with the position players in the future. I’m just happy to see Skole get more comfortable as this season has gone on.

That's something that may come

but you really need to see what his stuff does in AA right now. He has to fail or struggle before he adds another pitch. Maybe he needs that maybe his stuff as is is good enough because of his control. I don’t think you can label him in anyway right now.

Not every 20 year old is Felix Hernandez

He’s being challenged by guys who are still older than him and many who are legit prospects too. That he’s repeating AA is not some indictment of him but rather shows a maturation process that’s not going as fast as delusional fans want.

This isn’t a swipe at you Jason but rather to point out to impatient Ranger fans that rushing guys with his kind of talent leads to lost years like CJ Wilson had. That Derek Holland had. You can add Colby Lewis in his first time though MLB and Matt Harrison. Its not uniform, one size fits all. If he’s up in Arlington by July of next year that’s a huge development success story and should be celebrated but if he’s not and he needs more time that’s not a failure on his or the Rangers part.

Can we please stop trying to throw the baby out because he hasn’t fully learned to walk by age one?

by Hull Fan on Jun 13, 2011 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with that

and I should also say that there are certainly players that are lazier than others and ones that work harder. But it doesn’t necessarily mean complacency. I just think complacency is thrown around all too often––generally whenever a good prospect goes into a slump.

If I used frustrated instead of complacent would that not make you as upset?

I dont mean anything about his work ethic or his future value. All I am concerned about is the fact he has seen a guy jump from High A to AAA after only a couple starts and stick in AAA. And now hes seen a guy jump from High A to AA after 6 weeks or so. All the while he is still sitting in AA going on 2 years now and hes started out the year looking great. Hes in the top 10 in all the major categories stats wise and while he still has flaws and stuff to work on he could get that work done while also getting the reward of a promotion, something he has worked his butt off for.

by bigsteve on Jun 13, 2011 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

You're assuming that he doesn't simultaneously recognize that he has things to work on in AA, that the Rangers will reward him when they feel it is right, and that his time in AA is still valuable.

He may be 20 years old, but that doesn’t mean he is an impudent child who will stamp his feet when he feels slighted. And we don’t even know if he looks at it and says “I deserve a promotion!”

Shorter version: you’re assuming things about Perez you couldn’t possibly know and for which you have no basis.

They have likely communicated to Martin how they think he is doing, what he needs to work on and what the timetable is for promotion. bigsteve needs some patience. MP will be up in AAA this year and it will likely be more then a late season reward.

someone

is probably going to go unless Scheppers gets healthy and pitching soon but how much value does Mendonca really have? He’s a Leuke type throw in on a deal at best. There’s value in that to be sure. I’d rather move him than a young arm but let’s be honest in what he is and what that’s worth.

by Hull Fan on Jun 13, 2011 3:04 AM CDT up reply actions

He was only drafted two years ago

and he’s hitting AA pretty well (.900+ OPS right now). If he has decent defense at 3B (and he supposedly did when we drafted him), then he could definitely have some value. There is a league wide dearth of 3B prospects right now, which helps.

means you’re compiling one All-Star team from four teams. So every year, if there’s a shared weak position, you’re generally going to get some weird choices.

Highly doubt de los Santos

ever goes down there again. He’ll be back in Frisco when he’s healthy, I’d bet. Perhaps Myrtle Beach but I doubt it. Rojas will probably be in Hickory when he’s healthy again as well. Melo seems like a fit in Spokane because he’s too advanced for AZ and was overmatched in Hickory.

by JasonCole on Jun 13, 2011 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Melo in Spokane

might be a good step for him. He’s got stuff and I have no idea about his mental toughness but shipping all the way back to AZ might not be good. Spokane as a middle ground could work. In fact thinking about it I like this idea more and more.

by Hull Fan on Jun 13, 2011 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

And whatever comes out on opening day

things will certainly shift. Will the Rangers be aggressive and send the advanced HS lefty Kevin Matthews to Spokane if he signs early enough? Does Will Lamb go to Spokane when he signs? Yeah, I was wondering about him … if they signed him quick they might be able to really put some innings on his arm this summer as a starter maybe.

Kurkunka is a big

Hendricks probably has they’ll want to limit him. Regardless there’s a lot to love here both position player and pitcher wise so there’s a reason to check box scores each night unlike the current Frisco and Round Rock affiliations. I can’t wait.

I'm really trying to remember a Spokane rotation that seemed this sexy.

There was 2004, when they had Hurley and Diamond.

In 2007, they had Brigham, Holland, Kirkman, Castillo. Feliz even made a start.

2007 is also the year their rotation, and much of the Spokane roster, became filled with sub-college age guys.

2008 had NeRa, Perez, Pimentel, Boscan.

It seems like 2011’s rotation looks better than 2007 and 2008.

Of the bullpen arms, I’m pretty interested in Hanna. He hasn’t gotten a lot of ink, but he walked almost noone last year in AZL, and his fastball is reportedly in the 89-91 range, maybe a tick higher.

Perez and Payano are sexy.

Alvarez has pitchablity, IIRC, but doesn’t project much. Melo looks like a guy who will fall into the pen permanently soon. Kukuruda’s size and age look interesting, but not much known about him at all. West and Macumba in the pen are more interesting than these other 3 starters to me.

Good for them and I hope the Rangers have

an arrangement with a couple of our draftees. As long as everyone understands there really shouldn’t be a problem. If he’s there the team will draft him and if not then nothing concrete was broken. Why do people frown on these deals?

by Hull Fan on Jun 15, 2011 2:31 AM CDT up reply actions

seems strange

In 2004, the Tigers signed Justin Verlander, the second overall pick and a clear stud, to a $3.14M deal. And now Tyler Beede, an intriguing prep arm but hardly a top tier guy, is getting $3M just 7 years later. That seems like quite an uptick.

Have salaries at the big league level gone up that demonstrably since 2004? Or are we seeing different inflation rates as teams start to place greater priority on the draft?

I don't know why people are debating guys like Strausborger and Mendonca...

Yes. They are legitimate prospects. Should we start looking for ways to make them fit on our major league roster? Of course not. Are they top 5 franchise or top 100 baseball? Of course not.

But do they have legitimate trade value? Yes. They are both league appropriate age/experience wise, play solid defense at key positions and are hitting the ball very well. Using Sickels’ rudimentary system, I’d think they are both legit C+ to B- guys who are trending upward.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

Mendonca is pretty easy to see why people lost hope quickly.

And I don’t think anyone expected him to do anywhere close to as well as he’s doing this year. A .930+ OPS in AA? Uhhh, yeah. I’ll take that from him.

#TheLegend

and then some.

I’m trying to remember the last crop of talent coming through Spokane that collectively had a ceiling this high. They’ve been the Rangers’ affiliate since 2003, when Danks was there.

2007 was a good year. They had Feliz, Holland, Hunter, Kirkman, Brigham on the mound, Beltre and Borbon in the OF, and Moreland and Cristian Santana in the IF.

I shudder to think of #TheLegend and Santana in the same thought.

Especially when there are developmental areas the Rangers have invested heavily in...

short and short-ish LHP (Kiker, Ross, Erlin)
swing mechanical flaws (Moreland, Skole)
high injury risk players (Scheppers, Loux, Payano)

The combination of extra developmental time and these overlooked players is clearly where JD is trying to get ahead of everyone else.

I’m being a bit facetious. I think the Rangers do scout character more than most teams, and I don’t blame them. Given two players of roughly equal talent, the character guy is a better bet to reach his ceiling.

I’ll bet that most teams have some proprietary ways of evaluating character and the mental/psychological stuff. Seems like just one more way to make a marginal dent in baseball’s prospect attrition rate.
