Mike Napoli to the disabled list, Taylor Teagarden being recalled

Per Jeff Wilson, Texas Rangers catcher Mike Napoli is being placed on the disabled list with a strained oblique, and Taylor Teagardn is being recalled.

I thought that there might be a move coming today, with Dave Bush logging a bunch of innings yesterday before leaving with a bruised hamstring.  I figured that Texas might put him on the d.l. and bring up a new long reliever, so that there was an arm available in the pen this afternoon, should Matt Harrison struggle.

Napoli, though?  I didn't see that coming.

This is a blow to the Rangers...Napoli has been one of the team's more potent bats this year, and along with splitting time behind the plate with Yorvit Torrealba, he has gotten time at first base and DH.

No news just yet as to how long Napoli will be on the shelf.  I will update this post going forward as we get more info.

You can selectively frame stats to bolster your argument all you want

For example, he’s 4th in OBP. Best plate discipline on the roster, leading in walks. Second in steals, first in runs. Stuck with the lowest BABIP next to Naps. Tied for the lead in WAR among position players.

by dolphinpuncher on Jun 12, 2011 11:35 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Kinsler is one of the most overtated players in baseball..the rangers would be better off trying to trade him for some pitching instead of holding onto him and paying him some outrageous amount to be below average. Play MY at 2nd and solidify the offense..if you remember the rangers took off offensively last year when they finally dumped him out of the top of the lineup

by capps1 on Jun 12, 2011 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Kinsler is not below average

And replacing him with Young wouldn’t upgrade the offense. In terms of wOBA or wRC+, he’s been better than Young this year.

And Kinsler is a whole lot better than Young defensively.

Kinsler is one of the most underappreciated players on this team.

LSB: Apples are delicious

capps1: you guys are terribly overrating the apple, it has long been known that there are over 7000 cultivars of apple worldwide, most of which reaches maturation in the autumn. In controlled atmospheres, an apple can be stored for several month without spoiling, and has been feature prominently in many mythological tales as a forbidden fruit. These are all facts, and it’s time that we remove apples from our daily lives and use that resources and energy to grow something else, like water chestnuts.

by capps1 on Jun 12, 2011 11:38 AM CDT reply actions

Yes, he's been one of the best players on the team

He’s been one of the team’s better offensive players while playing very good defense at a key defensive position.

I’d say Kinsler, Beltre, and Elvis have been the best three players on the team this year, and you could put them in any order and I wouldn’t really argue.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 12, 2011 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

take out the first 3 hot start games..and he has batted .227 4hr and 20..all the while having most plate appearances..batting .000 with bases loaded…211 with runners on and miracously even worse .200 with RISP..if you think he has been MVP you are seriously deluded

by capps1 on Jun 12, 2011 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't get hung up on performance w/RISP...

…because those sorts of things even out.

And I certainly don’t care about performance with the bases loaded. What he’s done in 3 PAs with the bases loaded isn’t really relevant to the discussion.

He’s tied for 5th among major league 2B in wRC+, and is 5th among major league 2B in fWAR.

He’s been one of the best second basemen in the majors this season, and one of the best players on the Rangers.

All that being said…who do you think the team MVP has been?

So far on this team..the MVP is the starting pitching..offensively i would say MY and Moreland have been the most consistent..I took out the 3 game start to just show how anemic he has been for 95% of the season..take out 3 games from anyone else and you want see as bad a drop as you do with that guy

by capps1 on Jun 12, 2011 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions

One of the really big reasons that...

…the starting pitching has been as good as it has been is because of the great defense behind them. With Kinsler, Andrus and Beltre, you have one of the best defensive infields in baseball.

And as for MY, as I pointed out above, he’s been no better than Kinsler offensively.

but you guys want to find a Norm Hitzges stat.." wednesdays…night games at home….he leads the team in doubles"..

Actually, you’re the one who wants to find a “Norm Hitzges stat” — i.e., isolating a certain portion of the season while ignoring the rest.

He’s been a solid offensive contributor this season. You can use OPS if you want, or you can use something like wOBA or VORP, and you’ll come to the same conclusion.

He’s also been very good defensively. If you look at any of the advanced defensive statistics, it will show this.

This isn’t about “Norm Hitzges stats,” and unlike you, no one is trying to say, “Look at just this portion of the season or his game.”

He’s been one of the best players on the team this year. Period.

Maybe the correct statement

should have been one of the board’s more outspoken conservative posters.

Is that better?

I can agree with that.

If you're really serious about this, and open to learning a little

You should check this site out and find out how to both use statistics better, and how to use better statistics.

Because the stats you’re using are incredibly basic and kinda meaningless over a small sample size.

And in the case of errors, just meaningless period.

I’m willing to bet there’s people here that would agree Kinsler’s not actually the “team MVP” despite the fact that he leads the team in WAR, but the things you’re trying to cite are not reasons why he isn’t.

Bringing logic into the argument LSJ, there's no room.

It goes deeper. People take out their frustrations with Josey on their real-life acquaintances, which propagates forward, and before you know it you’ve got more marriages in an easily-smashable state.-Closure GT on 12/14/2010 9:48 AM

I use the same stats in evaluating any player

I don’t pick out stats that produce a positive outlook for Kinsler because I “love” Kinsler. I don’t care what a player’s performance with RISP are because variation there is generally small sample size noise.

I don’t use fielding percentage because there are much better ways to evaluate defense.

Once, I was making Paella for dinner

I moved the pot off the stove and realized I under-salted the dish, so I went to grab the salt but accidentally touched the stove with my hand. I must have yelped like a Scotsman.

That made my kind of angry, so I spend the next 30 minutes lecturing the stove about how it’s supposed to heat the pot and the food inside, not my finger, because my finger would not taste as good, etc etc.

A couple of weeks later, I was wiping off the stove after cooking, but accidentally burned my finger again.

I don’t think it heard anything that I said the first time.
