Any word on when King Leonys is expected back from his injury? And when the fuck are the aliens going to release Tanner Scheppers?

I've been wondering about Scheppers as well.

Him plus a trade addition could solidify the bullpenisamess pretty quickly.

Step 1: Borbon needs to have a good month or two
Step 2: Trade him to ATL for one of their reliever
Step 3: ?

Have you seen his FB%?

Good reliever but not sure I want him pitching for my team if he has to pitch half of his games at RBiA.

by coolaid on Jun 16, 2011 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions

true,

he’d definitely be a guy I worried I bought high on.

We might as well keep churcing through the Delcarman’s and Romeros of the world until the prices come down.

Borbon alone and/or Davis alone should net a decent reliever each. That’s four years of a solid position player at an impact defensive position we’re talking about.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

One stop shopping: Cubs

Garza, Byrd, Marshall

Will never happen, but sure would be nice. It could only happen if the Cubs saw any value in guys like Harrison, Hunter, Borbon, CD. Otherwise, no way the Rangers gut the farm for that.

Rock the J2, JD!

by rooster on Jun 16, 2011 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Haven't people been bitching for years

about home grown pitching and people want to move Harrison and Holland? Two of the best lefty guys we’ve produced, other than CJ Wilson, since freaking Kenny Rogers. Hey Hunter is useful but moving him won’t break my heart. Same with Davis and Borbon but let’s not kid ourselves that we’re going to trade Harrison/Holland and get back a better talent, starter wise. That’s not going to happen unless the name coming back is Johnson from Florida. Garza is hardly some panacea that’s going to solve our rotation and the price is way too steep for a guy who’s not significantly better than what we already have.

by Hull Fan on Jun 16, 2011 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions

So, you feel strongly about this?

Garza gives the team a lot of wiggle room around playoff time, and he’s the best SP on the market. They could use Ogando in any way they imagine or reduce his load if he shows fatigue. He is significantly better than Harrison/Holland at this point.

I would expect a trade like this would be a couple of young MLer plus a prospect on the tier beneath Perez/Profar.

But, really, Garza is the least important of the three, and I’d be happy with Byrd and Marshall, but I doubt even that is a realistic idea.

Rock the J2, JD!

by rooster on Jun 16, 2011 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe I'm not as bullish on Garza

as I should be but if you’re going to trade for a guy shouldn’t he be better than Matt freaking Garza? Danks I can understand. Josh Johnson is a no-brainer but Garza’s not a real ace so why trade away a decent #3 in Harrison and a kid who has the talent to be a #2 in Holland for a guy I view as a #2/3 in Garza.

by Hull Fan on Jun 16, 2011 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions

how much of that is pitching in the NL central

versus the AL East and the AL in general. He’s better than I thought but still not a number one and this team needs to spend chips on the bullpen before the rotation.

by Hull Fan on Jun 16, 2011 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I could make the case that CJ's (or any other Rangers pitcher) numbers are padded by having OAK, SEA and LAA in the division.

Garza’s numbers this years are ace like (only a few guys have been better than him) while pitching in a somewhat hitter friendly park and with a shitty defense. Garza’s numbers are helped by playing in the NL but if he were to move to an AL team again, he should still be putting up number rivaling CJ’s.

And if you have Harrison as the #3 starter on a playoff team, you are probably doing it wrong.

by coolaid on Jun 16, 2011 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions

LAA?

wOBA: 99 / 98

I guess it suppresses HR’s, but the overall wOBA looks to be pretty close to neutral.

I think we're rapidly approaching the point

where it’s no longer wise to expect Holland to be a #2. While he has starts here and there that are great, I’m not sure he’s ever going to be consistent enough to give you a 4.0+ WAR season.

I like having him in the rotation… I don’t expect to ever be able to rely on him.

Mendonca

Just curious as to how much this is a factor in his prospect-y-ness.

Take his numbers present day, and give him a 2 to 1 BB/K ratio instead of what he has now.

Where does he rank?

by PhilKidIsHero on Jun 16, 2011 4:16 PM CDT reply actions

Am I reading that right?

You want two walks for every one K? No professional player has that sort of ratio.

If you meant the inverse, a walk for every two strikeouts, then that makes more sense. Still, I don’t think it is the ratio of walks to strikeouts so much as the ratio of strikeouts to ABs. Contact rates usually go down as a hitter sees more advanced pitching, so a hitter who is already striking out at a high rate in AA does not project well in the big leagues.

I'm also starting to get pissed at our top 5 for not signing

Hullfan might be right, and they might be saving the Matthews and Cone announcement for our Atlanta series. But the top 5 picks were really ONLY justifiable because they would sign early and for slot.

They have to all realize how lucky they were to get picked where they were. There is no way any of them hold out for more than slot, right? I swear, if they do, fuck em and take next year’s pick (at least through the first 3 rounds, sans the Clemson kid who signed).

So who is everyone's pick to start for Spokane tomorrow.

I think shroomer has it right. I think they’ll start Alvarez because he’s older and has more experience. I think Perez will be the best pitcher on the staff though. I don’t think they want to put the pressure of starting opening day on him, similar to what they did with Martin Perez last year. I really believe David Perez could have started in Hickory and would be having similar if not better results than Luke Jackson. This is all guessing though since I haven’t seen either of them.

by Tex2044 on Jun 16, 2011 5:49 PM CDT reply actions

Spokane preview article confirms Perez is Friday's starter
The other starters will be righties Santo Perez (no relation), Richard Alvarez and John Kukuruda and lefty Victor Payano. That leaves 11 others, including 2011 second-round pick Will Lamb (Clemson University) and eighth-round selection Kyle Hendricks (Dartmouth), working out of the bullpen.

I assume that that will be the roto order but it doesn’t actually come right out and say it.

Francisco Rodriguez ($900,000 from the Angels in 1998), Francisco Liriano ($900,000 from the Giants in 1999), and Felix Hernandez ($710,000 from the Mariners in 2002) have become all-stars. Prospects like Braves righthanders Julio Teheran ($850,000 in 2007) and Arodys Vizcaino ($800,000 from the Yankees in 2007) and Rangers lefthander Martin Perez ($580,000 in 2007) all rank among the top prospects in baseball and are pitching well at Double-A or above.

Hrm. Good news/bad news:
While righthander Roberto Osuna is drawing attention in Mexico, many scouts believe Venezuelan righthander Victor Sanchez is the top pitching prospect in this year’s July 2 class… International sources expect Sanchez to sign for around $2 million-$2.5 million, with the Mariners considered the strong favorites to land him.
The best lefty in Latin America might be Venezuela’s Yohander Mendez, who has been connected to the Rangers. Mendez has a long, lanky build, and the ball jumps out of his hand with a loose delivery. He throws in the mid- to high 80s, has touched 90 mph and shows feel for a changeup, though he’s been hard for scouts to see recently.

Loux is the oldest

And count me in the crowd that thinks Loux will move up because of his age, but Wieland and Ross will stay. They have things to work on and will be kept down to do that.

I don't think he's the best of the three

I’m not sure I can judge that just yet but I don’t see three guys able to replace them and that’s the real issue with promoting all of them. Maybe a college sign they can put in the bullpen in Hickory will enable someone else to move but I just don’t see the talent unless they bring in some journeymen from another organization to fill spots and I can’t picture them doing that.

by Hull Fan on Jun 16, 2011 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

You promote guys

when there is space available and when they are ready, regardless of what the talent looks like down the line.

You are right though. I’d be surprised to see many promotions to take the spot of Loux Wieland and Ross.

Maybe Thompson given as he’s been down there for 1.5 seasons?

by Akalhar on Jun 16, 2011 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I could buy Thompson

could also see them moving someone out of the bullpen into the rotation but its hard to find 3 starters at once.

by Hull Fan on Jun 16, 2011 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Indeed.

Most of the other starters at Hickory haven’t logged many innings, are quite young, and aren’t exactly dominating outside of a short sample size.

Then again, the Rangers often do seem to be aggressive regarding promotions for pitchers.

by Akalhar on Jun 16, 2011 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I can see them wanting to promote them

but it really is a question of bodies. If they’re willing to bring in a few that says they want to push their guys but I just don’t see it happening. I expect Loux to get the call after the ASB but the others will remain. At least that’s my take given the current information available. Things may change but I don’t see them changing that much.

by Hull Fan on Jun 16, 2011 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

by RangerMad on Jun 16, 2011 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions

all three could remain and just dominate

where they are and all three could be promoted to give them the next challenge but at this point I don’t think their moving is up to their own performance but a lack of other options to replace them. Maybe if one of them goes on a month long tear and makes it obvious they need to be promoted they’ll work it out somehow but at this moment they’re not putting up obscene numbers where they are so one could probably go but 2/3 or all 3 seems dubious at best, through no fault of their own.

Who knows whether this info is correct?

But it does bring up an interesting point. I am a little surprised that there’s not a more vibrant wiki scouting community online.

I would think, by now, that before any given NFL draft I could visit a page that has scouting reports on almost all the draftable players. And with all the people now able to see minor league games, I’d think most minor leaguers could be covered as well. Obviously it isn’t professional scouting, so throw the 20-80 scale out the window. But I’d love a page that simply collects, for example, the pitches a pitcher throws, a ballpark range for velocities, stamina throughout the game, etc. Things that a layman could see and understand.

Does anything like this exist?

HIC's playoff chase ...
Here’s the deal: Greensboro is on track to play a full 70 games; Hickory has had two weather cancellations and is set to play 68.

Those two cancelled games mean Hickory (38-27) has a slightly higher winning percentage than Greensboro (39-28). And the team with the highest winning percentage gets the playoff spot come September

So if Hickory and Greensboro both win the same number of games tonight, tomorrow and Sunday, the Crawdads will finish with either a .002 or .003 edge in winning percentage. Doesn’t matter that the Hoppers will have won one more game. Doesn’t matter that the Hoppers are 5-2 head-to-head against the Crawdads.

Hickory gets the playoff berth.

My favorite’s probably Jello and Juggernauts. I hear those drums, and I hear incredible deliberation. Or, a deliberate decision, maybe it was easy. But I love them. So dried out, dessicated, scrunched up, turned into drum jerky. He could be hitting a cardboard box with an egg wisk.

And I love the Hendrix chord progression.

And I love the screechy M Ward vocal.

Somehow I notice more detail each listen, and that’s the whole record.

Freshman and sophomore seasons but still struggled in the Cod with wood bats.

When a prospect stagnates or goes backwards, its usually not a good sign (obviously it would make me feel a lot better if his struggles were due to an injury or the result of his collision with Taylor or if there was another plausible explanation for it). I can give him the benefit of the doubt for having a bad junior season given everything that happened with him but what about his struggles in the Cape Cod league?

well, Payano and D Perez's lines are virtual opposites

one has great ratios but ends up with an ugly line and the other not so much but ends of with a sparkling line… Thats the way low a baseball go

Hey Shroomer

Is this Koufax guy starting for the AZ team tomorrow any good? The 1st 3 guys sound like they have some potential, but i’m not so sure about Newberg and Rhadigan. Any thoughts?

by Tex2044 on Jun 19, 2011 8:52 AM CDT reply actions

hedging my bets

ADLS, Mavare, Parra, Rojas, Strong, Williams? Matthews should be a regular starter once he gets his arm warmed up. MDLS might see some rehab innings.

by shroomer on Jun 19, 2011 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I think you have about as good of a chance as being right with Koufax as you do guessing the real one.

Other than Matthews, who is there to be excited about on the mound? I assume Blackwell will be a starter. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Osborne moved down there to start. Matthews, Williams, and Wiser? Klein?

by Tex2044 on Jun 19, 2011 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

my guess

Claudio, McKinnon, Parra, ADLS, Strong (if he is still viewed as a starter), with Matthews and Faulkner with starter ceilings but whose innings will be limited. The rest of the guys on the roster, including recent draft signs are all bullpen arms.

by Goyogringo on Jun 19, 2011 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

had to look up McKinnon

he’s a dirty Canadian – Faulkner’s a good shout – Castro would be in the mix if he signed

by shroomer on Jun 19, 2011 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

not sure what is up with him. he was a guy they must really like, as he suffered a partial labrum tear his senior year that did not require surgery (yet). That is not so discouraging, as O’day has been pitching with 2 labrum tears since his last year with the Angels, one in his shoulder and the other in his hip.

by Goyogringo on Jun 19, 2011 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

They must really like Kukuruda as well.

I was surprised that he got a rotation spot in Spokane. I thought he was extremely raw.

by Tex2044 on Jun 19, 2011 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

It is his second pro year, so I don't think it's totally out of nowhere

but apparently he was sucking in rookie ball last year, so maybe he made some progress

by Telegraph on Jun 19, 2011 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Pretty sure he signed late last year.

This is his first real year. I think he only had one appearance last year. I just remember he was really raw when we drafted him. Only 16 IP his JR year and around 55 his SR year I believe. He did throw 4 straight no-hitters against questionable competition. He had 26 BB in his first 32 IP before the no hitter streak started. He then had only 6 BB in his next 22 1/3 IP during his no-hitter streak. What I’ve read says he threw a FB 87-90, CB, and CH when the Rangers drafted him.

by Tex2044 on Jun 19, 2011 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

also

Claudio pitched in the PR winter league, an impressive feat at the age of 18, and he might have been the youngest kid in the league. I think he was only used as a lefty specialist. The only thing more impressive would have been if he had played the better VZ or Dom leagues, which, by the way, did happen with a former TX DSL sign, Vicente Ernesto Escobar, traded away for none other than Rule 5 LH bust, Ben Snyder.

by Goyogringo on Jun 19, 2011 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I forgot about Faulkner.

You don’t think Blackwell will start?

by Tex2044 on Jun 19, 2011 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

It's possible

but I would be surprised if he, mavare, and Rijo would repeat rookie ball; it isn’t necessary as they all did fine last year (and for Rijo it would be his third time there). They might go on the spokane reserve squad pending promotions or be injured. It wouldn’t surprise me to see some promotions on Monday or this week throughout the system to adjust to the excess of bodies. All three might get kicked to the Spokane or Hickory pen instead of be asked to dominate greenhorns again. Having said all that, there are just too many starters, and not enough slots, though starters not in any rotation will get their innings, and eventually move into a rotation somewhere.

by Goyogringo on Jun 19, 2011 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

With Lamb working as a starter, I count 11 kids with starting ceilings on the staff; its pretty amazing, even if most probably have back roto ceilings

by Goyogringo on Jun 19, 2011 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Who do you think will start in the OF in AZ?

Jordan Akins: 6.4 60
Saquan Johnson: 6.28 60
Rashad Harlin: 6.38 60

That’s a lot of speed from the young guys.

by Tex2044 on Jun 19, 2011 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup fast group

of guys who may or may not prove to be good at baseball. I’ve had my projected roster up at M&M for awhile and don’t forget the other CF project, Ken Radcliffe, who likely starts.

by Goyogringo on Jun 19, 2011 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, I forgot about him because he's not on the roster yet.

He had 3 HR in his first 24 AB in extended. Surprising. The Rangers are full at the lower levels. They either need to take a slow approach to signing whichever picks are left, or they’re going to have to start to release some of the older guys who are still down there.

by Tex2044 on Jun 19, 2011 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't realize Perez's delivery is so over the top.

It looks kind of funky as his long arm follows through and nearly scrapes the ground.

Looking at it some more, maybe it’s not so much over the top as it is that he has a long forearm. His arm is cocked behind his head like any other pitcher, but when the ball comes out it seems much more above his head than others but not with an unusual vertical orientation.

Anyway, he’s got a simple delivery with what looks like a very fast arm. His arm is completely through his delivery, nearly dragging on the ground, when the ball is just a few feet away from him.

I’ve totally tracked him online since the first reports of his ability to keep the ball low in the zone in Fall Instructs just after he signed, but I’m really, really impressed with his delivery. Everything I read and see just makes me more and more obsessed.

Also, I wondered if the opposite field HR by Alfaro was a cheap shot over that short fence in RF, but it cleared it quite a ways back. It looked like it would’ve at least been against the wall in a ballpark with a normal 330-ish ft line.

Nathan Harsh is just growing into his giant frame. He is athletic for a bigger kid and has monster hands. The ball jumps out of his hand and the 86,87 is pretty effortless.
The projected ceiling is unlimited for Nate. He has been selected by USSSA to represent the USA in Japan next summer. He is far from a finished product by any means but you have a very high return on investment with this kid. The fastball is heavy and has armside run. The curveball is good enough and even very good at times. The splitter I like and the change is average. Nate works his butt off in the gym and is very strong for his age and size. Nate has super good energy and work ethic.

http://www.baseballscoutz.com/page/s…-rhp-brunswick

In March 2011, Nathan Harsh outpitched Kevin Matthews of Richmond Hill in a thrilling 1-0 win. Harsh K’d 11 Wildcat hitters and threw 90-91 MPH on the fastball. Hash also walked no RH hitters in the game. 10 Major league clubs were on hand to view the game and left impressed with Harsh. One Big League scout " this kid is going to throw really hard one day, very projectable"

I wonder if that scout was Ryan Coe

2009(21) Rookie: .334/.408/.638
74 G | 27 2B | 3 3B | 18 HR | 36 BB | 74 SO | 10.9% BB | 25.8% SO

2010(22) A+ CAL: .314/.384/.606
138 G | 42 2B | 3 3B | 35 HR | 57 BB | 161 SO | 9.5% BB | 30.7% SO

70 G | 14 2B | 1 3B | 22 HR | 55 BB | 51 SO | 17.9% BB | 20.7% SO

Obviously he can crush the ball and he’s either a 1B or DH. He’s really cut down on the SO this year and increased his BB. Is this real or an illusion because people are pitching around him? Is there a chance Chris Davis would have followed a similar path if he hadn’t been pushed so fast?

2010 Visalia

is a crazy hitters’ park, and Mobile where he is now is a crazy HR park, so I don’t trust the power numbers. The improvement in plate discipline looks great, but if the power is that crazy pitchers may be throwing carefully. 7 of 10 parks in the Southern League are quite friendly to right handers for power. He looks legit to me, but I’m skeptical he’s a superstar.

Credit to them for having the balls to spend the money in the draft and getting by most accounts premium talent.

(Also, Rhodes is getting paid ~$4 million this year, I think and Norris will probably get something close to that number. I want to punch something now.)

The biggest probable wildcards (if that makes sense) are Woodruff, Fisher, Pentecost, and Eickhoff.

Harlin and Castro will definitely sign.

The ones that I would love to sign are Fish, Pfeifer, Sadzeck, and Moriarty (almost certainly not going to happen).

For all we know, they could have an overslot deal with him done already. The rule of thumb is that if you’re going over 5% more than slot, you wait to announce it so you don’t piss off MLB.

interesting stuff in an article about him
When I was going to all these workouts I kept hearing that baseball wants to start drafting better athletes. I also saw a lot more black players at these workouts than I ever expected.

"My feeling is the game is changing, they’re looking for more speed and defense, more athleticism, and that gives a guy like me a chance."

Though we didn’t talk with anyone from the Rangers organization, it’s likely they consider Jefferson to have a high ceiling. Unlike many draftees he hasn’t played travel ball since the fifth or sixth grade, in fact Jefferson never played travel until this summer.

Nevertheless he still led Decatur this past spring with a .413 average, while also leading in hits, RBI and stolen bases. Considering he’s still pretty raw in terms of baseball technique, one can only imagine how much he’ll improve over the next few years.

Maybe I'm overoptimistic in our front office and their draft budget

But I have to believe we’re going to spend money somewhere in this draft. So far, we’ve had one slot signing after another. I guarantee they sign Fisher and he’ll be overslot by a good amount, so that’s one, and they’ll probably toss Woodruff a slightly overslot bonus, too.

But they’re going to spend money somewhere else, so where is it most likely to be?

I think the front office took a shotgun approach

much like that espoused by some as a healthy approach to July 2 international signings. A lot of talent that’s raw, take guys you like but don’t break the bank on any one of them unless they’re truly special. Leonys Martin was a huge contract, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them sign one or two July 2 guys for over a million, but I don’t expect them to wow us with any draft signings.

its not a bad way to go

I am still not in love with picks 1S, 3 or 4, but if we end up signing a few of these later HS kids, I’ll make my peace with the draft.

I would have loved to see us pick a John Hicks or a Mark Lowery in the third round since I think our system is starved for an advanced catcher and this year seemed to offer a bunch of them. I recognize that I focus my ire on Castro irrationally, but damn that felt like a giant overdraft.

Batter 3 – R (Mike Aviles)
1 – Slider, called strike
2 – Fastball, ball, down and outside
3 – Slider, popup dump single to shallow CF. Julio Borbon throws out runner at 3B on the worst outfield assist that I’ve ever seen. He essentially flipped the ball with his wrist, and it got to 3rd base on like 4 bounces. Julio Borbon has an incredibly accurate throwing arm.

Batter 4 – L
1 – Fastball, called strike, outside and high
2 – Changeup?, ball, inside and low
3 – Slider?, line drive double into RF corner (80), runner scores

Batter 5 – R (Lorenzo Cain)
1 – Fastball, ball, high
2 – Fastball, ball, high
3 – Fastball, called strike, outside corner (89)
4 – Slider, swinging strike, down and away (81)
5 – Slider, flyout to shallow RF

23 pitches, 14 strikes (60.9%), 1 swinging strike (4.35%)

Hurley generally picks up velocity as he goes, so if he is 89 now, he should be able to get into the 91-92 range later. Meanwhile, Julio Borbon struck out and Chris Davis hits a Cruzian HR. Another day at the park.

3 – Fastball, ball, inside and high
4 – Slider, foul

6 – Fastball, popup single to RF

Batter 7 – R

68 pitches, 42 strikes (61.8%), 4 swinging strikes (5.9%)

Most likely done, a lots of hits but some cheap ones. Fastball wasn’t really hit well but several off-speed pitches were ripped. Slider looks okay, changeup very inconsistent.

You could turn Davis hitting a HR into a drinking game.

I really think he’s decided he doesn’t care if he strikes out. He’s going to hit the ball hard. His BABIP is back up to the levels when he was destroying leagues. Here are his BABIP by year/league.

2006(A-): .316
2007(A+): .373
2007(AA): .282
2008(AA): .374
2008(AAA): .365
2008(MLB): .351
2009(AAA): .393
2010(AAA): .407
2010(MLB): .275
2011(AAA): .400

Basically Davis hits the ball REALLY hard and will always have a high BABIP. The only question is will he ever make enough contact for it to show up like it does in AAA.

Alvarez 1st

1. 1B to RF

5. Popout to 3B
6. Walk (2-2 FB sounded like it should have been strike 3)
7. 3-run 2B, advanced to 3rd on throw
8. SO Swinging (FB up)

The only velo reading I heard was an 89 MPH FB. He was shaky the 1st couple batters, then seemed to calm down. He’d get up 0-2 and then struggle to put them away. Alvarez seems like he has been around forever, so it’s easy to forget he’s still only 18 for the majority of this season.

have to think slot. we are really saving some money with these top picks. Hopefully that means we get more of these later picks inked.

geez

after getting pounded in game one, Spokane has really come back strong against S-K. I was worried that we’d finally see a Spokane team struggle this year, we’ve just go so many young, young guys there, but alas, they look salty as usual.

I’m actually anxious to see some guys get promoted, because there are guys who aren’t getting to play every day who I’d like to see more of.

@spikadelic Please take note that Alfaro was intentionally walked so
they could pitch to a first-round pick tonight.

Odor and Alfaro didn't exactly fall on their face in their first series

we had some pitchers who struggled, but overall, 4-1 and a lot of strong showings. Nice start.
