Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

EPL Summer Thread - MUPPETS UNITE

Chelsea have practically wrapped up Lukaku and Modric wants in too. United have signed Phil Jones with Young and De Gea to be announced later. Liverpool have signed Henderson, Marveaux failed his medical, and they look to be in on Charlie Adam and some other English dudes. City are favorites for Sanchez runners up to Barca for Sanchez. Arsenal are doing Arsenalings.

Modric story.

Here

‘I want to leave Tottenham as friends. I have enjoyed my time there, but now it is right for me to look at another club.

’I have an arrangement with the chairman. When I signed my new contract, he said that, if another club came to sign me, they would consider the offer.’

A second Chelsea offer is due – and this time the price will rise from their opening £22million bid to closer to £30m.

And Modric said: ‘Chelsea are a big club with an ambitious owner. They have great players and they have ambitions to fight for the title and win the Champions League.

‘I want to stay in London. I am very happy here and so are my family. I like the city.’

Goddamn it, Roman.

I think you guys got yourselves a great new manager. If City and Spurs can keep up, and we can get back on track, the EPL title races over the next few seasons are going to be sick.

City is rumored to be chasing Aly Cissokho, and Juventus is after Michel Bastos- looks like Lyon could lose a few big names this summer, which is only going to make it harder for me to win with them on Football Manager next season. :(

19 mil for Downing?

I know the transfer market is inflated right now, but that seems really high to me.

In other news, Villa are going to SUCK this year.

Not mediocre. Right about average

by trza on Jun 23, 2011 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Problem is

that Downing’s value to Villa is much higher than his value out on the market. On a team like Liverpool, with all the options they have now, he’s just another guy.

As for Villa, if by “suck” you mean “mediocre”, then I agree with you. If they get a decent midfielder and maybe some defensive help, Bent’s going to get enough service to score the goals which keep them about mid or lower-mid table.

If Downing goes, they’re probably relegation candidates.

If Barca really want Cesc Fabregas, and they really really do, #afc should accept their £27m bid – as long as #fcb throw in Thiago Alcantara

The fact that Thiago

doesn’t want to go makes this much less appealing to me. He’d be out of there by his early 20’s.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 26, 2011 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions

i would rather them keep thiago

than go after cesc

hes gonna end up in barca sooner or later. and his value continues to drop the closer he gets to the end of his contract

…then again does arsenal change coaches if they dont win anything next year?

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

by knockoutking on Jun 26, 2011 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions

also

mainly that is because of the high cost to (actual) PT that cesc would likely get, assuming the best case scenario — if everyone stays healthy

also, because i dont want to pay some huge amount of money and end up with Thiago/Afellay in the same place that Bojan ended up this year (very little PT, not progressing and in fact regressing, losing confidence, etc)

granted, cesc is very very good.

but i am not sure how much more that Iniesta plays up front with whoever else barca has up front (sanchez/pedro/villa/messi/jeffren?/whoever else) and the VERY crowded midfield already in place

so imho, the development of thiego/afellay is greater than spending 40mm on cesc and hurting the development of both those guys

just give it a year and his cost should be significantly lower, plus you get the development of those 2

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

my understanding is that he wants to go

if they bring in cesc

which i totally, 100% understand.

equally, it looks like the bojan deal isnt 100% complete. barca has the offer, and from what i can tell were waiting until after the u21 games to make a decision/announce it?

his dad i think is the one saying basically he wants to be in barca, etc and telling his son to STFU before he screws up and says too much lol

by knockoutking on Jun 27, 2011 8:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Ok

The comment I read was from his dad, and I’ve tried to follow it as little as possible. I’d still argue that you’re talking about a player likely to leave before he’s fully developed, I have to guess.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 27, 2011 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Agree and disagree.

He’s a natural replacement for Iniesta, who’s 27, but Barca have a few kids in the pipeline that could do that. Depends on the circumstances, but I don’t think it’s fair to say he’d be off in a few years.

by LiamP on Jun 27, 2011 10:12 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

It wouldn't have to be back to Barca (though that's most likely)

When he’s 22 or 23 it wouldn’t be unusual for him to start looking at big Italian/Spanish clubs again, particularly if Wenger retires in the meantime.

I’d suggest that it’s easier to be optimistic about something like this when you’re in Man Utd’s shoes (looking to buy him straight up and coming off of some championships and CL Finals, rather than getting him in a swap deal and on a six year trophy drought with precious few second place finishes). Arsenal’s recent history of losing Spaniards like Merida and Reyes (and in this case, of course, Cesc) at inopportune times early in or before their primes also makes it hard to be optimistic that they’d keep an Italian/Spaniard/Argentine for 5-6 years into their mid-late 20’s.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 27, 2011 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Depends on the player really.

Your wage structure and lack of success are big hindrances, but it’s a lot easier to convince a kid to stay in London than Manchester.

I suppose he could look to Italy, but Barca kids don’t go to Real and if he’s good enough that you don’t want to sell him in a few years, the only 2 viable clubs in Spain will still be Barca and Real.

Also, I don’t think you lost Merida and Reyes so much as you let them go.

by LiamP on Jun 27, 2011 12:14 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I have the same fear with De Gea, who had his medical today)m.

20yr old Spanish GK with smoking hot Spanish GF, neither of whom speak a word of English. Take them and move them from Madrid to Manchester…I think there’s a good chance he’s gone before he turns 25 if Barca don’t find a good replacement for Valdes.

The counter-argument for that is Reina, but I think he’d be gone too if Barca needed a GK. Plus, Reina seems to be an incredibly loyal guy, and who knows if that’s the case with De Gea.

by LiamP on Jun 27, 2011 12:24 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Now that you mention it

You know who would be perfect to help De Gea transition to England? Almunia! You really need him as a caddy. All you need to do is pay his wages and about 100k North Londoners would be glad to help him move his things, etc.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 27, 2011 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

The main reason I mentioned Italy

is that I believe he’s actually from Italy. I would think that would make the Milan clubs and maybe eventually Juventus more appealing than an England club that won’t trump his wages elsewhere and probably second to Barcelona.

As far as Reyes, I wasn’t quite as obsessive about comings and goings four years ago, but my understanding was that he was homesick and was sick of the weather and food (and I’m sure he had Real Madrid stars in his eyes as well), so he begged his way back home, not that Arsene didn’t want him any more and certainly not that he preferred Baptista. I know Reyes pissed off a lot of fans, and I don’t think that would have been the case if the team was dumping him.

On Merida, I guess you’d classify it as some of both. Wenger really wanted to keep him, but he wouldn’t promise him a major role yet, so Merida wouldn’t sign an extension and left for free. He’d just turned 20, so it’s not like he was a failed prospect at that point.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 27, 2011 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions

He was born there but grew up in Spain and his father's Brazilian...so not really deep-seeded roots.

I know Reyes signed that long contract but I thought his schtick was wearing thin with Arsene and the support. Maybe I’m wrong on that one.

With Merida, it’s sort of like what happened with Pique and United, although I think Pique was further along when he was sold. Pique wanted first team appearances, SAF couldn’t give them to him with Vidic/Ferdinand but wanted him to stay, Barca made an offer so he acquiesced and let him go.

I just think that if Barca offer up a talent like Thiago, you take the deal and worry about his machinations to return to Catalonia later.

Blue Moon is bumming big time - a quote from Mancini is filtering out ...

taken from his appearance on Sky Sports Italia –

I talked to Sanchez, said he was available to come to the City, but then withdrawn. After the last bid we are out of the running for the Chilean.
Kinda weird it hasn’t exploded in the English language press yet. hmmm …

by shroomer on Jun 28, 2011 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Who are you rumored to be targetting now?

Supposedly you’re one of the 5 teams that matched the buyout on Neymar.

by LiamP on Jun 28, 2011 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Barca also

They have no problem paying for Sanchez or Neymar but want Cesc for a pack of tic tacs and half a stick of jerky.

by sprite on Jun 28, 2011 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

No...they have problems paying for Sanchez.

That’s why the deal’s not done. Barca are being just as cuntish about Sanchez as they are with Fabregas.

by LiamP on Jun 28, 2011 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions

The big ITK guy at Blue Moon sez that the Sanchez deal has gone like this ...

Barca has always had the lowest bid and is machine-gunning horseshit rumors thru the compliant Europress about the player and the money offered. ManU has always been right there with a better offer than Barca, maintaining a strong interest despite what the press is saying. And City has always had the best offer, both in size, terms [money up front] and incentives. Basically when one team ups their offer, the other teams have, too accordingly. Chelsea never has made an offer supposedly.

I heard that there’s no way Chile could afford the insurance to allow Sanchez to play in the Copa if he hasn’t signed by the starting whistle, so the player and Chile want to see this deal done within the next week.

What's different about it?

Tapped up the player, offered a sum at least 6mm less than the highest bid and then went on a media barrage to emphasize that Barca are his preferred destination and Udinese should take their lower offer.

Only real difference is that Udinese have only had to put up with a year of this nonsense.

well is it not clear that barca IS cesc’s “preferred destination” at this point in time?

re: sanchez, i am not sure how i really feel about bringing him in — read an article that talked about how barca dont really have guys than can “beat” people 1on1 on the wings (which is where RM is trying to push play vs in the middle) and that is one of the reasons that sanchez works well w/ the current team’s makeup/would fit in well with it

The blatant disrespect shown to Arsenal throughout this ordeal

and suggesting that Cesc is damaged goods now but they’d be willing to take him back because of his Barca DNA and then the constant rhetoric coming from the players about Cesc needing to come home….nevermind the shirt fiasco last year. The latest bid I saw was 27 mil, I understand it’s a completely different situation but when a definitely broken Torres can get 50, that’s ridiculous.

Based on that, Fabregas is worth at least 35mm.

27mm is insulting.

by LiamP on Jun 29, 2011 11:46 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

my undersatnding is that he went for either 13 or 16mm + a 7mm rated player (total of 20mm)

i may be mixing facts up here (correct me if i am wrong) but I thought itw as 27mm + a player?

again, may be wrong there — let me know if is the case

but when you have next to zero leverage on a guy, how do you expect to get full market value for him? no matter WHO he is, no matter WHAT sport it is

They’ve both done the “unsettle the player to try and get a cheaper fee” thing with Liverpool. It worked with Mascherano, but not with Xabi Alonso- LFC asked for 30, and got it.

by knockoutking on Jun 29, 2011 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Cesc has not asked publicly for a transfer

I believe that he’s requested one privately, but that’s between him and Arsenal. “Most” is a little hard to define. But I’ll tell you what a respectable team would do. They would approach Arsenal as Barca has, do their best to negotiate a price, and if the other club says either we’re not selling him at this time, period (which Arsenal has several times over the past 14 months) or that their price is way higher than what you are willing to pay, walk away for the time being.

Barcelona doesn’t do that. They just look for other ways to force Arsenal to sell him against their will, including begging him to publicly demand a transfer, which – aside from being completely illegal – is great for Barcelona but a nightmare for Fabregas. I feel like very few other clubs, as silly as the whole transfer business is, would be so disrespectful to the player they’re trying to acquire and to the team they’re approaching. Do you think that most clubs’ entire starting lineup would media blitz, demanding that the other team let go of a player because they deserve him?

It’s the same caliber of arrogance and disregard for everyone else that made everyone hate the Miami Heat so much.

I would use Eden Hazard as a counterexample to this behavior. Hazard has said publicly that he dreams of playing for Arsenal just like Cesc has Barca. Arsenal has approached Lille about Hazard and has the money to buy him if Lille would sell him at a reasonable price. But Lille said that they’re not ready to sell him. Has Ivan Gazidis called press conferences to say ‘Hazard desperately wants to come to Arsenal. Arsene knows player values and we are offering the correct value, so Lille needs to sell him to us.’ Are Thomas Vermaelen and Robin Van Persie slamming Lille for not granting Hazard’s birthright of playing for Arsenal and launching monthly tirades about how it’s an injustice that he’s not allowed to leave? It sounds ridiculous that they would do that, doesn’t it?

by Brett Perryman on Jun 29, 2011 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I could see it, but

from what I read we’re talking about one of those silly Man City irrational bids just sort of laying their junk on the table and showing everyone how much money they have, not a bid that a reasonable team, much less Arsenal, would compete with.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 29, 2011 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I could see it.

You know that Qatari group that was “interested” in buying United? They bought PSG. So, they certainly have the money.

by LiamP on Jun 29, 2011 1:34 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I just don’t see him going to another Ligue team.

by sprite on Jun 29, 2011 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

It’s hard to see him thinking that’s a great step for his career. Of course an absurd salary can ease some of those concerns.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 29, 2011 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

i agree that they shouldnt have handled it the way they have

from the players coming out about it specifically but you have to understand that the barca president is kind of a huge tool (see what he said before the 2nd clasico about how bad they would beat madrid, etc) so i wouldnt expect less than that

i feel that last year’s stuff was almost totally a publicity thing. they couldnt have afforded him, they had nowhere to play him, but they had to appear like they wanted him badly to appease the fans w/ mourinho coming in, etc, etc, etc

pfft - who AREN'T we targetting might be easier to guess ...

Supposedly Modric doesn’t interest Mancini – which should please Ghettobear. Sneijder is a big time target, but I don’t think he’s responding very well so far – they aren’t letting up on him tho’. I think we have a standing offer to Barca to fund their Cesc chase by buying somebody off them – not Villa tho’. Aguero has never been associated with us by rumor or ITK. Mata/City had just the most casual of mentions weeks ago. I think we’ve been asking about Hulk since Tevez went rogue. You never know when one of these smaller deals, like Savic or Vertonghen might suddenly gain momentum. The Baines interest seems to have gone quiet. Cissokho might turn into something. Cahill is dead I think. I’m sure we’d buy Pastore but maybe not for crazy-ITAL money. Hazard enquires were made, I think.

The ITK guys claim we’ve put in bids elsewhere. The Blue Moon mods were so confident big transfer news was coming this week that they bought extra service from their server host to accomodate the expected traffic. And I got a Mata tattoo to try to mask my Kaka tattoo.

Haven’t decided yet which team I’m gonna play in FM12. I’m considering trying a new league- I’ve played in England, France, Portugal, and Greece so far. Might try Spain, Holland, or one of the Eastern European leagues.

On the Thiago front

He didn’t want to come to Arsenal (and supposedly Wenger didn’t want him, though that can obviously be interpreted a thousand different ways given that it’s not like he’s trying to figure out a way to get Cesc to Barcelona) and now it looks like he won’t be going to Chelsea or Man Utd either, at least this summer.

Barcelona have agreed a two-year contract extension with highly-rated youngster Thiago Alcantara.

Thiago, 20, who has been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp this summer, is now tied to the European champions until June 30, 2015 while his new contract has a buy-out clause of €90 million.

Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent."

this quote makes me laugh for a number of reasons lol

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

18.59 The agent of highly-rated Argentina forward Javier Pastore has confirmed that Palermo have received a €50m bid for the player. “It’s true there’s a club that wants him at that price,” Marcelo Simonian said.

gotta be man city, right? RIGHT?

heh - sounds like it, eh?

The big ITK guy at Blue Moon recently hinted that City is seriously pursuing a young player that “might be the best in the world someday.” Pastore definitely entered my mind, considering all the circumstances going down.

10.20 AC Milan have ruled themselves out of the race to sign Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas. Vice-president Adriano Galliani told the club’s official website: “Fabregas will not join us because he will join a different club”.

16.22 Arsene Wenger has urged Arsenal’s fans to be patient as the club’s transfer activity will increase at the end of July. "We are in a waiting period, everybody is waiting to see the other [club’s] moves," he told Alsace TV.

Has Arsene ever had a more miserable summer?

Even if he makes great signings he’s going to spend all of June and July in utter crisis mode.

Oh really?

It’s just Daily Star, but:

ROBIN VAN PERSIE WANTS OUT OF ARSENAL

ABOVE: Robin van Persie is ready to rock the Gunners further by handing in a transfer request Robin van Persie is ready to rock the Gunners further by handing in a transfer request
2nd July 2011 By David Woods
ROBIN VAN PERSIE could be the next star player to quit Arsenal.

And van Persie is ready to rock the Gunners further by handing in a transfer request IF boss Arsene Wenger fails to replace his departing (typo)

Also

But Andriy Arshavin could also be on his way out with Turkish giants Galatasaray weighing up a £13.5m bid for the Russian.

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/view/198934/Robin-van-Persie-wants-out-of-Arsenal/

I doubt if Van Persie goes, but I’d been wondering when we’d hear about his displeasure over the early summer.

That's one I don't believe

Quotes earlier had him saying he wants out if things don’t change according to an interview he gave Dutch radio. But as always the magic of the internet ran with it and it turns out there was no radio interview. I’m sure they ran with it off of that.

I like this quote
Manchester City have out manoeuvred Liverpool, who had been hoping to sign left-back Gael Clichy.

Paying a mediocre player £90,000-a-week = “out manoeuvred”

Also this one
SIR ALEX FERGUSON has ordered Manchester United to land Samir Nasri in a £22m deal

Well, if SIR ALEX ordered it, I guess it’s ordered.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 30, 2011 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Nah.

I really can’t see Arsene selling to United. If Nasri’s that determined to leave, they’ll explore every foreign avenue they can before flogging him to City. I imagine letting him go to United’s a non-starter.

by LiamP on Jun 30, 2011 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Funny how the nasri situation soured

during the season arsene was talking like they almost had a contract sealed up for nasri then the talks went dead and suddenly nasri wants to go to united.

One more
Arsene Wenger: The market will be more agitated late July, early August, when clubs start to see what they lack and they will start to panic

I have no idea how that observation fits with what Arsenal is trying to do.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 30, 2011 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions

It seems like he should want to avoid that.

It’s in that environment when players start to get priced out of Arsene’s comfort level.

by LiamP on Jun 30, 2011 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions

and then arsene will say the market got out of control so they didn't make a big signing

Hughes

This kinda puts down in writing what we all discussed a few threads ago.

Now I’m just enraged.

Denilson could remain at Arsenal

Denilson is not in negotiations with any other club and now appears likely to remain at Arsenal.

I just hate the look of the sponsor

Bad-looking sponsors just ruin jerseys for me. It’s the only reason I don’t own a Wolves shirt. Loved it when Wolverhampton’s sponsor was Chaucer back in the Championship.
