Wieland probably blew his shot for a quick Double-A promotion

Six pitches to get three outs in the High A All Star Game? That’s unacceptable. Probably needs to head back to extended for some work.

interesting guy

profiled today by Sickels.

I remember being very interested in him before the ‘09 draft, but the more clued in among us were quick to point out that he’s not a hard thrower (mid 80s, tops out around 87) and more of a trickster with a lot of decent off-speed options. Still, the Angels snagged him in the third round and he didn’t sign (oops). Padres get him in the 9th after he spends the entire ‘10 season on the DL and a year later he’s in the bigs.

I am very curious to see how he does. He almost sounds like a taller Danny Ray Herrera, so he might find acclimating to the bigs to be a bitch. But then again, he’s a Padre, so he’ll probably put up fine numbers.

There was a lot of weird stuff going on there

didn’t really pitch in his last year at Arizona State. Drafted by Padres (the club Pat Murphy is currently with), then instead of going to Omaha and pitching with the team there, went to the Cape League and pitched just a bit and signed with the Padres.

by JasonCole on Jun 22, 2011 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

so while ASU was in Omaha last year

he actually left the team and pitched for a team in the Cape League instead? Wow, it seems like there’s some bad blood there, then. Perhaps he felt a little misled after the advice he got to stick around for his senior year?

From what I've heard from my friends in the ASU Ath Dept

Some info on recent AL West J2 signings.

I’ve posted the Rangers part below. I had never seen a lot of this information. I apologize for the size.

HERE

Texas Rangers

Top signing: C Jorge Alfaro, Colombia, $1.3 million

July 2-eligible six-figure signings: SS Alberto Triunfel (Dominican Republic), C Fernando Vivil (Dominican Republic), SS Smerling Lantigua (Dominican Republic), LHP Frank Lopez (Venezuela), SS Luis Marte (Dominican Republic), SS Nick Urbanus (Netherlands), SS Elio Castillo (Venezuela)

Other six-figure signings: SS Guy Edmonds (Australia)

Though the Rangers’ international spending for 2010 (approximately $3.6 million) ranked among the top 10 in baseball, their activity wasn’t centered around July 2 as it was in past years when they landed shortstops Jurickson Profar and Luis Sardinas and lefthander Martin Perez. The Rangers’ area scouts still stayed on their top targets, and after their ownership situation was resolved the Rangers went on a run of low six-figure signings at the end of the year.

Their prize signing came last January, when they locked up catcher Jorge Alfaro for $1.3 million, a record for a Colombian player. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Alfaro trained with Enrique Soto, who brought the converted shortstop over to the Dominican Republic to work out for teams. Like many young Colombians, Alfaro’s righthanded bat proved to be raw in the DSL, where he hit .221/.278/.291 in 48 games. Alfaro, 17, still has promising tools, including a 60 to 65 arm on the 20-80 scouting scale and above-average raw power. He’ll have to learn more patience after drawing just five walks last year.
Though Venezuelan shortstop Rougned Odor signed in early January and thus is technically a 2011 signing, his $425,000 bonus was the largest the Rangers gave to a July 2-eligible player from the 2010 class. Odor, 17, is the nephew of Indians Double-A hitting coach Rouglas Odor, and he plays with the instincts of someone with baseball bloodlines. Odor was an all-star at the Pan-American 14-and-under championship in 2008 after leading the tournament in average, tying for the top OBP and ranking second in slugging, then was an all-star again at the World Youth Championship in Taiwan in 2009.
Odor draws widespread praise from scouts for his efficient, sweet lefthanded swing and ability to work the count. While Odor’s size (5-foot-10, 155 pounds) is a concern for many scouts, he has shown some surprising pop for his size. Odor has good hands but many scouts believe he will end up at second base, though he went from an average runner last summer to an above-average runner before he signed with Texas. He spent time training in Florida and his English is already advanced, so there’s a chance he could begin the year in the Arizona League, where he could see time at both shortstop and second base.

Among the other shortstops the Rangers added was Alberto Triunfel, who signed for $300,000 in December. Triunfel is the younger brother of Mariners shortstop Carlos Triunfel, though Alberto is quite different from his brother. The younger Triunfel, 17, has a thin 5-foot-10, 160-pound build and stands out for his athleticism and smooth actions at shortstop. He can make the flashy play at shortstop, though his speed and arm are around average. He has made improvements at the plate but his bat will need to catch up to his fielding.
Fernando Vivili, a 17-year-old Dominican catcher, signed in December for $300,000. A strong-bodied 6-foot-2, 200-pound righthanded hitter, Vivili shows good power, solid receiving skills and arm strength that is a tick above-average. That month Texas also signed Dominican shortstop Smerling Lantigua, a 17-year-old righthanded hitter. At 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, Lantigua isn’t a speedster and will likely move over to a corner, possibly sliding over to third base. Lantigua is a contact hitter with a good frame, and his power could come around once he fills out.

Another December addition, Venezuelan lefthander Frank Lopez trained in the same program that produced Rangers catcher Tomas Telis and Rockies outfielder Rafael Ortega. Lopez, 17, is 6-foot-1, 180 pounds and is an aggressive strike-thrower with some feel for spinning a breaking ball. He throws in the high-80s with projection for more with broad shoulders and good arm action.
Luis Marte, a 17-year-old shortstop from Santo Domingo, is an athletic righthanded hitter with a wiry 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame. Marte is an aggressive line-drive hitter with gap power and above-average speed. In the field he shows feel for the position with good actions, solid hands and a solid-average arm. Texas also signed a Venezuelan shortstop in December when they added 16-year-old Elio Castillo, a skinny 6-foot-2, 160-pound righthanded hitter with good instincts and feel for making contact—he hit .311/.357/.356 in 132 at-bats this winter in Venezuela’s Liga Paralela—though his power and defense are further away.

Texas was active internationally outside of Latin America as well, making the franchise’s first European signing in November by giving $175,000 to Nick Urbanus, an 18-year-old Dutch shortstop. Urbanus is the grandson of righthander Han Urbanus, a member of the Dutch Baseball Hall of Fame and the first Dutch player to come to the United States when the Giants invited him to spring training in 1952 and 1953. Though the Giants offered his grandfather a contract, he returned to the Netherlands, where he won five Hoofdklasse championships with Op Volharding Volgt Overwinning Amsterdam. Nick’s father, Charles, also played in the Hoofdklasse in the 1970s and ’80s and won multiple MVP awards as a pitcher and a shortstop before joining Han in the Dutch Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.

Nick Urbanus has represented the Netherlands in the 2008 World Junior Championship in Edmonton, the European Junior Championship (where he was named the tournament’s most outstanding defensive player) in 2009 and in the 2009 World Port Tournament in Rotterdam. Though the Rangers do not have a full-time European scout, Rangers Pacific Rim coordinator Jim Colborn played in Europe and the Rangers were able to see Urbanus in July when he played at the 18U Junior World Championship in Thunder Bay, Canada. Urbanus starred at the tournament, hitting .379/.471/.448 with only one strikeout in 34 trips to the plate.
Urbanus has more advanced baseball instincts than many European prospects and has room to add weight to his 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame. A lefthanded hitter with some switch-hitting experience, Urbanus is a contact-oriented hitter who should begin his career this year in the AZL, where he’ll likely also see time at second base.

Before July 2, Texas also signed Australian catcher Guy Edmonds for $150,000 last February. Edmonds, 17, was an all-star at the World Youth Championships in Taiwan in 2009. He hit .186/.303/.206 in 34 DSL games in 2010 and should head to the AZL this summer. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound righthanded hitter had just two extra-base hits in the DSL but shows some pull power and an average arm.
Another notable international signing in 2010 came in May, when the Rangers agreed to terms with righthander Santo Angel Perez for $85,000, though his deal is still pending official MLB approval. Perez originally presented himself as 16-year-old Santo Angel Franco in 2008, when he agreed to a $570,000 deal with the Cardinals. That deal fell apart and MLB suspended him for one year for lying about his age and identity. Perez is now presenting himself with a new name and age (22). Players last year did not have to wait for MLB approval to participate in the DSL, where the 6-foot-5, 200-pound Perez had a 2.59 ERA and a 41-9 K-BB mark in 59 innings. He’s a strike-thrower with a heavy 88-93 mph fastball and some feel for a changeup.
Texas also signed Neftali Feliz’s younger brother, 18-year-old third baseman Aneudy Feliz, for $25,000 in November. Feliz, an athletic 6-foot, 175 pounds, is a righthanded hitter with strength and raw power potential. He has a strong arm and figures to also spend time at first base in the DSL.

So Matt West is Rule V eligible, right?

does that mean we are more or less aggressive with him? ie see what he can do at the next level or keep him buried in SS ball? and yes, I’m asking this question after three innings.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

somebody could take him in the minor lg portion of the Rule 5 draft

we would likely protect him from that portion

I believe teams get a certain amount of players they can protect from the minor league phase. I could be wrong but I remember this from back a couple years ago when we either took someone or protected someone. maybe it was in one of the articles detailing Ogando and Beltres background where we picked them in the minor league rule 5 draft.

Looking at the calendar makes one wonder. Richard Bleier’s next turn is this Sunday. Bleier has given up 18 runs in 14.1 IP over his last 3 starts. Wonder if Joe Wieland will just slide into the Frisco roto on Sunday in place of Bleier. hmmm

Alot of work on consistency needs to be done, but I think you can attribute some of the hits and runs to the enviroment he’s playing in, PCL is an unforgiving league.

It would have been silly to assume he’d just continue to dominate AAA, just as right now it’s silly to get too worried. Still, I’m sure we all hoped he’d just continue kicking PCL butt all season long, it’s definitely more fun that way.

needs more Tepesch and Grimm

those two are making that money strapped draft look pretty decent so far. Not sure who I’d bump…probably Matthews till he does something in pro ball. Telis that high? I’d bump both Buckel and Payano above him but I’m pretty gunshy about catcher prospects.

It is about time for the prospect ranking and I feel much better about this group now than I did last December. There’s more talent here than I think most of us realized.

by Hull Fan on Jun 24, 2011 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't have Telis that high

He can’t play any other position besides catcher and DH, and while he’s hitting at the lower levels, I don’t have enough confidence in his bat to carry him.

by Tex2044 on Jun 24, 2011 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Tepesch just doesn't sex me up much.

Grimm is listed last because I totally forgot about him until right before I hit enter to post the list. Definitely think his sex appeal is rising. Million Dollar Matthews is about halfway between Erlin and Buckel on the list – seems a good place to start his future movement from. I’m a Telis fanboy, like with Odor and Payano – bottom of the list seems like a place for personal whims.

IIRC, Sardinas was considered to be Profar’s near peer until the injury troubles. Alberto’s hit tool is scouty-amazing, but I’m letting him come to my sexy place first. I’m an Engel Beltre skeptic, obviously. There are arguments to be made for several guys from the pile to jump up into the list.

by shroomer on Jun 24, 2011 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

and I’m a Robinson fan along with Hanna and Alberto. I’m also not a believer in Beltre but you can’t jettison him just yet. Tellis I’ll let slide but what about Tepesch has you so tepid? He’s been above average at the levels he’s pitched at and been promoted once this season already. I’m not going to declare him a top 15 prospect but guy deserves to be in the top 20 discussion.

there are only 15 starters in the majors whose FB averages 93 or above (3 Rangers) but bunch around 92. If Darvish can maintain this velo, he is going to get PAID. I remember his FB average being around 91 last year (or the year before that).

Is there a reason that pitchers in Japan seem to throw more pitches per inning? I recall Matsuzaka throwing a lot of pitchers per inning Japan as well.

Question about Yu

Everything I’ve seen shows that he is a free agent after this season. Would that mean, then, that he would not be posted, and is eligible to sign with anyone?

Also, that repertoire is sexy. Three fastballs (four-seam, shuuto, cutter), two breaking balls (slider, curve), and two other off-speeds (change, splitter). 6’5" as well, per Wiki.

The protocol agreement between Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball does not address the signing of either nation’s amateur players. It does formalize how Japanese veterans may switch continents: on the open market after nine seasons in the Japan major leagues, or earlier if a player’s club chooses to auction off his rights through a procedure commonly known as posting.

From above

I'm beginning to wonder if the sporadic playing time so far has contributed to Alfaro's slow start.

He’s batting .217 after the game tonight with a seeming high number of strikeouts. Only playing about every other day so far could be part of the problem.

Announcers say that he topped out at 91, got a few readings at 90

Off-speed pitch was supposed to be ~76. Since his curveball should be slower, I assume that’s the changeup reading

Called strikeout, swinging strikeout (90mph), infield single by Altuve, and a swinging strikeout. I think he got three swinging strikes.

So we should encourage it’s usage over Bookman.

I love this about Davis

scottrlucas Scott Lucas
Not saying CDavis must be promoted, but he’s got nothing left to do in AAA. He’s Neo at end of The Matrix. Light-speed Kung Fu, with a bat.

Well put, Mr. Scott Lucas.

I so badly want him to have just one more extended look up with the Rangers, but the only way it seems that can happen is to significantly decrease the defense in the outfield by sticking Moreland out there.

I’m afraid of watching him leave in a deal for a mediocre reliever, then finding his groove with some other club. Why couldn’t he have taken advantage of one of those many previous opportunities??

I'm just now getting to focus on it.

My 18 month old daughter decided to stay up 2 hours past her bedtime running around laughing. It’s tough to tell who is batting if i’m not paying attention the entire time. I’ll look when he comes up again with the caveat that I don’t know anything about swings. I will say that Sierra looked like he was having a hard time getting his arms extended which caused his bat to be in the zone for a very short time.

by Tex2044 on Jun 26, 2011 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

The key point they wanted Cone to improve on was staying back on the ball and driving it.

Not putting his weight on his front foot for weak contact and swinging too early.

Matt West is making batters look silly

They can’t catch up to his FB, and his SL got 2 swinging strikes. He gave up a hard hit single that the guy fought off.

by Tex2044 on Jun 26, 2011 10:27 PM CDT reply actions

So can we hope this guy pulls a 2010 Ogando on us and turns into a stud late inning guy with his plus fastball and wicked slider?

My only concern, and it is a very very low concern, is that given the success of Ogando and others who have transitioned from positional to pitcher that someone may snatch him up in the rule 5 hoping to hit on a lottery ticket

by bigsteve on Jun 26, 2011 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I could see it happening.

I’m not quite sure that it is worth putting him on the 40 man (not sure what room we have on there) to protect him. We have too many other prospects to protect.

by Akalhar on Jun 26, 2011 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh I wasn't gonna go that far

I think if some team were to pick him you hope they aren’t able to keep him.

But if the rangers were a team going into next season with no real hope of contending and could basically throw a roster spot away on someone like West I would want my FO to try it.

by bigsteve on Jun 26, 2011 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

a lot of ball to play yet

He’s pitched 4 innings, let’s give it a while before we entertain these thoughts. If he pitches like this all year you protect him, but it’s awfully early. Taking a glance at the eligibles, it looks like the only others that will need to go on are Ramirez, Perez, and maybe Mendez. There are a couple others on the bubble, but trades this summer could thin that out.

Eh

Hes back in High A

I expect domination from him there.

although it is curious how he’s been handled thus far. He was added to the 40 last winter and the thought was that he may be fast-tracked through the pen to try and get him to Arlington as soon as possible. Obviously the injury set things back but hes been used as a starter this year and is being thrown back out there as one now.

I assume they are going to keep him as a starter the rest of this year and then try and transition him next year to get some play out of him in the majors at some point next year.

He was extremely raw when they drafted him.

I was surprised by the assignment to the Spokane rotation. I thought he would be starting for the AZL Rangers. So I would say you should keep an eye on him. I’d check the box scores on him, but he’s not a guy that I’ll listen to the game just to see how he’s doing.

by Tex2044 on Jun 26, 2011 11:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I heard some good things about him after his first start in Spokane

from someone who saw it. I can’t give everything away but I’m writing about it within the next couple of days. He has progressed quite a bit since I saw him last.
