6/30 Minors

This is a minors thread to open a discussion on draft philosophies stemming from "baseball wisdom" Buck Showalter uses in the draft as well as, at the suggestion of shroom, to accommodate the onslaught of posts tonight as we follow David (the Goliath pitcher), MLDS, and Wieland.

6/30
SPO-8:30- Alvarez
HIC-6:00- Thompson
MYR-6:00- Loux
FRS-7:00- Snyder -- wha?
RRE-7:00- Feldman
AZRL-pm- Parra?

6/29 -- Mavare Mania begins!
SPO-8:30- S Perez
HIC-4-DH- Tepsh/Luke
MYR-6:00- Grimm
FRS-7:00 ASG
RRE- Off
AZRL-pm- Mavare?

6/28 -- Tepesch and Ramirez continue solid development.
AZL - ADLS?
SPO - Payano
HIC - Tepesch, postponed
MYR - Boscan
FRS - off
RRE - Ramirez

6/27 -- Wieland off to a nice start in AA.
SPO-8:15- D Perez
HIC-6:00- Mendez
MYR-6:00- Gomez
FRS-7:00- Wieland
RRE-7:00- McClung Chris Davis fireworks show
AZRL-pm- Blackwell?

Late last week, I heard Tim Kurkjian on a radio show speak about blue eyes in the context of Buck Showalter's draft rules of thumb. They are:
(1) Do not draft guys with 10 to 2 feet (meaning pointed out); look for pigeon toe guys
(2) Do not draft 18-yo with full grown beards; they won't grow anymore
(3) Be careful of blue-eyed guys (they didn't say why)

Such is the sage advice from wisened, old baseball men.

Erlin v. Holland's minor league numbers

Holland

287 IP: 7 H/9, 0.5 HR/9, 2.6 BB/9, 9.5 K/9, 3.68 K/BB

Erlin

209 IP: 6.8 H/9, 1 HR:9, 1.2 BB/9, 10.1 K/9, 8.07 K/BB

Both Lefty, Erlin won’t reach Holland’s 95 mph, but the periphs are in his favor.

by Jobu. on Jun 27, 2011 4:08 PM CDT reply actions

Well, maybe

but remember that even with a very low HR rate in the minors, Holland has had occasional trouble with HRs in Arlington. Erlin has a MUCH higher fly ball rate and a higher HR rate in the minors.

Holland was one of a few prospects I think the Rangers promoted too quickly. Let’s hope they don’t make the same mistake with Erlin.

I have a few questions for you RR folks.

What’s the best place to sit. I’ll be with a friend who is a pretty big Ranger fan and would enjoy the things an LSB patron would enjoy. But our ladies are, well, not big baseball fans so they won’t really have the same views on the things or places to do or see. So a few questions:

Best place to sit?
Best day/time to go?
Things to do before hand? (I enjoy BP, but the ladies will need something)
Any place I can look at for good prices on earlier question for good seats?
Anything else I need to know before heading out there?

That last single by Altuve bounced up in the air off of the 3rd base bag.

Mendonca barehanded it out of the air and tried going to 1st, but the play wasn’t close. The thing is, Mendonca could have just stopped when he caught the ball and tagged the runner trying to advance to 3rd. He was literally 2 feet to his left and had no way around Mendonca. It would have saved a run.

BA has a midseason writeup of the league leaders

Here is the WHIP entire section… all the other sections include a lot more names and no clubs owns a writeup like these two..

One of eight minor league pitchers to amass 100 strikeouts so far this season, Robbie Erlin has been truly terrific, showing command and control that belies his young age. Sure, he’s hit a speed bump with Double-A Frisco (4.79 ERA through 35 2/3 innings), but his peripherals—including 6.3 times as many strikeouts as walks—suggest a turnaround is likely. On the year, Erlin has allowed just 6.3 hits and 1.1 walks per nine innings to go with a healthy strikeout rate. Erlin’s elevated hit rate in the Texas League (9.6 per nine) may fall, but it probably won’t fall to Carolina League levels (4.1). That’s because when putting the ball in play against Erlin, his opponents have collected hits just 22.3 percent of the time, the lowest rate among this group of pitchers . . . On the flip side of that coin, another Rangers prospect has given up more hits (and thus has a higher WHIP) than one might expect. Fellow Frisco pitcher Joe Wieland, a righthander, has allowed a .320 average on balls in play, possibly because his supreme control (just four walks over 85 2/3 innings) gives his opponents a pretty good idea they’ll see a strike if he falls behind in the count.

Look at the end of the article – “I took alot of pride in not walking anyone.”

I wonder if this is something we’ve worked really hard at instilling in our young pitchers or if this is more of a scouting/makeup emphasis that’s helped produce guys like him and Erlin who really seem to make this almost their number one goal.

Chris Davis just hit HR #18 to the opposite field in his 1st AB

His swing looks so easy and smooth. I thought he popped it up off the bat and it went over the bullpen in LF. Then Barden and German hit HR to go back to back to back.

Have to individually find them for each team. (Check out HIC’s park factor if you haven’t seen them. Makes me doubt Profar’s power surge. Not that he won’t get stronger and should hit double digit home runs but would like to seem him carry his power to MYB before feeling more confident in his ability to hit for power.)

heh. Well, to be more specific... from Lucas...
With four rehabbers on the roster and numerous regulars needing work, starter Neil Ramirez (3.80 ERA) was pulled after two innings. Ramirez’s fastball ranged from 92-95 MPH with exceptional downward tilt to his first four batters. He was throwing four-seam velocity with two-seam action, in essence, and it reminded me of watching him in Surprise this spring. Unfortunately, he had little control of it, and after a second consecutive walk, he received a visit from coach Terry Clark. Ramirez then dialed the fastball down to 89-92 and pitched effectively. He didn’t allow a run and struck out two.

Omar Beltre sighting in the AZL game

struck out two in an inning of work. Really good to see him start heading back.

Also, this Barret Loux cat is good. 92/22 BB/K in just 79 IP and only 2 HR… might have the best FIP of all those MB pitchers.

Oh nothing, just throwing down a 5 for 6 with a 2B and a 3B. Hitting .520 for the year so far.

I finally gave up on it and traded him in my dynasty league

Looks like they are just going to wait for expanded rosters.

I don’t get why you wouldn’t want a future star to be a part of this overachieving team while it lasts. ESPECIALLY if they eke their way into the playoffs. I wouldn’t want him to just be a spare part on that team.

That’s why we should call up Profar, Martin, and NeRa already

why would you overreact and trade him just because he hasn't been called up yet?

i hope he was a primary piece for a stud. Then again, I’m probably being silly. Kipnis is the only player on my farm that’s really that close. Oh well, 15 keepers.

Ours is an AL-only cash league

The problem is, to keep players, you have to sign them to an extension that adds $4/yr for each year you sign them. So a player isn’t really worth having this season unless you see enough to sign them to a 4-year deal.

Kipnis won’t show me that in September so I traded him to the last place team for holds guys.

Seems like a stone cold 20/20 2b of the future, though, right?

Some guys from last night

AZL Rangers:
Radcliffe: 1-1, 4 BB

Akins; 1-5, 2B
On the year Akins has 9 hits. 7 have been XBH. 6 2B, 1 3B.

Edmonds: 2-5, 2B
After only having 2 XBH in 34 DSL games last year, the 18 year old Edmonds has 3 XBH in 4 AZL games this year. .438/.444/.750 2 2b | 1 HR. He has 2 hits in 3 out of 4 games. The other game he was 1-2, bb, HR.

Spokane:
Sierra: 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 SO
The 2 SO give him 16 SO in 9 games to go along with 0 BB. .317/.317/.537

Odor: 1-4
.321/.357/.434 1 2B | 1 3B | 1 HR
On the year Odor is more than holding his own as a 17 yr old in the Northwest league.

DSL
Luis Marte: 1-4, HR
1st 13 games: .306/.320/.346 2 2B | 1 BB | 11 SO
Last 10 games: .385/.415/.667 5 2B | 2 HR | 2 BB | 4 SO

Odor

one of the guys I was so happy the Rangers got aggressive with and so far he’s rewarding them for that decision. Hope he can put it together for the full season so they can keep pushing him.

Hanser was another one I was happy to see, but he looks like a Spokane repeater at this stage (SSS, i know), which would be fine for a kid his age

What's the rumpus?

by Hypo-Luxa on Jul 1, 2011 8:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe, but I doubt it with Alberto.

He has a sore left shoulder right now, but when healthy he can flat out hit the ball. He just doesn’t swing and miss very often. I would put money on him finishing with the highest average on the Spokane team.

by Tex2044 on Jul 1, 2011 8:31 AM CDT up reply actions

anyone know how Odor's defense is?

Is he a true 2B or does he project to be a SS?
