Pre-Draft Thread

Okay guys, let's use this thread to consolidate chatter, rumors, links, scouting reports, etc in the days before Monday night's first round coverage.

Today saw two different mocks emerge from BA, an expert's draft compiled by four of their writers that has us taking Joe Ross, and a true mock compiled by Jim Callis that has us landing Swihart. Be sure to check out their top 200 rankings as well.

I'll try to compile some other links as I find them.

Matt Skole has emerged as a player I like, perhaps irrationally

Jake’s older brother, he is considered a strong defensive 3B coming out of Georgia Tech.

His profile page
His 2011 stats page

BA says he’s probably a 5th or 6th round guy, and we not exactly need another collegiate 3B at the top of the draft, and if we do get one, some might think it should be Garret Buechele. All that said, if we snagged Skole in the 4th, I wouldn’t complain.

33. Texas Rangers: Josh Osich, LHP, Oregon State. There is some thought that the Rangers will spend big on a player like Josh Bell, but that also might be a ploy best used in the later rounds. Their location just might give them a leg up on landingBell, but Osich is a name that has been in the rumor mill for a while. One name I’ve yet to hear is their 2009 first-round pick, left-hander Matt Purke.

    Lots of Osich talk
Bell, but not here—Texas connect could help chances.
    No Purke

that’s a pretty big question mark. has great relief stuff but the question marks surrounding his curveball make my skeptical if he can start.

it seems like we're hearing his name a lot

and we heard skole’s name a lot last year (although not purke’s the year before, so who knows).

Frankie has him ranked 23 overall, which is the highest I’ve seen him ranked. Honestly, he makes some sense for us, since he’s a physically mature lefty who throws in the low to mid 90s with decent movement, a solid change up, and a curveball he only recently started throwing again.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Jun 4, 2011 2:12 AM CDT up reply actions

to be honest

I’m just as intrigued with their other big starter, Sam Gaviglio. He K’ed almost a hitter per inning (in 30 more innings than Osich, despite the same number of starts) and seems to have enough movement on his stuff to keep from getting hit hard (only two HRs on the year).

BA says this about him:

Gaviglio doesn’t blow hitters away with premium velocity, but his fastball is plenty firm at 89-91 mph, and it has excellent sink and run. Casey and Gaviglio agreed that his changeup and slider are equally effective secondary offerings, and he mixes in a curveball, as well

.

Lots of Jungmann gossip floating around

Wouldn’t be shocked to him go in the top 10, possibly as high as #7 (Arizona). Not a crazy ceiling, but polished arm that should move fast and sign. Good draft selection for a team with an unprotected pick.

Got a strange question...

how do you find out the draft buzz… do you straight up ask someone that w\ill be in the draft room about how their board is or how they feel about someone or is it more a feeling out of particular scouts?

That would be very bad for business. However, if I get something from a scout or writer about a player, or any other source that is on the periphery, I’ll pass it along.

I like this Joe Ross kid...
Looking up to the 6-foot-6 Tyson, both figuratively and literally, is a significant reason why. While Tyson’s wary of casting a shadow — he too starred at O’Dowd — Joe thrives on busting through it. When opposing teams attempted to rattle him by yelling terse challenges like “You’re not Tyson!” from the dugout, adrenaline started flowing.

“It makes me want to prove that I am my own person,” he says, “and I think I am better than he was.”

MLB.com Draft guru Jonathan Mayo believes Ross should boast a repertoire that, once polished, will feature two superior pitches. His fastball has registered as high as 96 mph, and his slurve is often 10 or so ticks slower. Ross’ changeup leaves more to be desired, according to Mayo, who described the offering to be in its “nascent stages.”

Told of Mayo’s scrupulous scouting report, the pitcher responds: “I have a pretty good changeup, though, so…”

I feel like the only names I’ve really heard linked to us consistently are Nimmo and Osich. There’s a glut of HS arms that are expected to be picked in the 25-40 range, and I haven’t heard us attached to any single one, and probably for good reason.

Ross at 33 and Bell at 37. We could only hope. Though getting a guy like Harrison at 37 would be a boon too. As long as he can hit they’ll find some place to play him.

The Bauer stuff is overblown

Trevor Bauer: 165 Ks, 41 BBs, 10 HRs in 131 innings.
Gerrit Cole: 153 Ks, 52 BBs, 4 HRs in 123 innings.
The latter has much better stuff, a better frame and a cleaner delivery. I’m not sure why everyone makes Bauer out to be a stunningly advanced pitcher. His numbers aren’t much better than Cole’s.

From Jan 11 of this year
Dillon Maples is a little bit of a short-armer, a mid 3/4 guy who tends to lead with his elbow sometimes, but who can make the ball come out of his hand not too badly when he does a better job keeping his body closed. He pitches from no windup, followed by a semi-circle in the back topped by the 3/4 slot. I’d call his arm action and delivery fair at this time. Fastball I had at 90-93 with tail, 2-seam tail, 4-seam a little ride. CB at 79 shows flashes of tight depth. CHG at 83 showed flashes. Needs some "pro-ing" up in the coming years, but not a bad platform to build from here. Be sure to check out the photo store link on this guy. A nice shot, we think.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but i'm holding out hope that Swihart falls to us.

I saw him play a few times for team USA. The bat was very impressive. I’m terrified of HS Catchers, but he’s good.

by Tex2044 on Jun 4, 2011 3:46 PM CDT reply actions

Here's what I'm struggling with.

By all accounts, the Rangers have money to spend in this draft. Not BoSox money, but in the next tier.

The players that they’ve been associated with are some grouping of Nimmo, Osich, Harrison, and maybe Swihart and Bell.

Yet, Keith Law has those first three guys ranked 33, 49, and 36.

So, why is that the combination of a team with money to spend and a draft that’s deep enough that it should provide reasonable cheaper options for teams who don’t want to spend big isn’t resulting in mock drafts with higher ranked talent falling to the Rangers?

Is it that there are enough other teams willing to spend?

Is it that Law’s ranking isn’t the best?

What am I missing here? Shouldn’t we see more guys like Bell and Swihart or other guys in the 20s falling to the 30’s?

The guys we want the Rangers to spend money on are the same guys the other teams that are likely to spend money on will want, too.

And they pick before we do. So the guys like Bell, Nimmo, and Swihart most likely to fall aren’t falling past teams like the Red Sox.

It doesn’t surprise me in the least, though. Apparently Spain still holds a small grudge from the Gold Cup (or that might just be media hype).

But Spain had a goal taken away on a questionable (at best) offsides call. They also had a shot clang off the top of the goal, and Howard has made two good saves.

It's not about looking for the right players, it's developing them properly.

I was talking to a co-worker of mine who has been coaching youth soccer in the midwest for decades. For the most part, they spend very little time on training drills and 5 a sides (for example). Most of the development is done in regular games, which is basically the opposite of what happens in Europe.

is that it’s hard to convince kids to pick a sport where, if they succeed at the highest level, they will have to go to Europe.

"I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." - Jon Daniels

by GhettoBear04 on Jun 4, 2011 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

That's apples and oranges though.

I’m serious when I compare Onyewu and Altidore to Gerald Green and Gathright. LeBron and Hamilton are physical freaks who have been developed to translate their athleticism into dominance in their sport. Onyewu and Altidore haven’t been developed properly, and are basically athletically gifted players without a clue of how to play their sport.

by LiamP on Jun 4, 2011 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's something I read a long time ago

trying to address that. I’m not sure what it’s like now, but I know they are working on the issue:

“On the national staff, we would talk about some habits, or talk about reactions, and where those habits and reactions get instilled,” said Hackworth. “They get instilled in young players when the game doesn’t really meet the demands. What it basically means is that we needed to have these players not only play less games, but we needed them to play meaningful games, so the competition would hold them accountable, and make them play out of their comfort zone.”

To that end, the USSF insists that academy teams have a minimum practice to game ratio of 3-to-1, the better to hone skills and address weaknesses in a non-game setting. Playing multiple games in a day, a staple of youth tournaments across the country, is prohibited.
Ficken is in a position to know. He was a youth player in the U.S. during the 1960s and has been a youth coach for more than three decades. Ficken said he has seen improvement in his players “overnight,” and this was just minutes after watching his side fall 2-0 to their counterparts from the Chicago Fire.

“Today’s game was, for want of a better word, a culture shock,” said Ficken. “We met a Chicago Fire team that played modern, collective soccer, that was one- or two-touch, at a level and a speed that we’ve never experienced or seen in the New York high school environment that our kids come from. … The whole idea is to prepare our kids to play at a speed conducive to beating international opponents.”

I'm probably considered one of the most ardent small government types on this board

But I’m ready for the US government to announce that enough is enough and declare soccer war on the rest of the world.

For the rest of time, the Federal Government will spend $1 billion a year, every year (adjusted for inflation) to build the greatest soccer academy of all time. International losses will become moments of national shame. We will dedicate ourselves to winning every World Cup for the rest of time. It will take years to get where we want to be, but you will never beat us again. Ever.

Since most of you are in here, I have a fantasy trade question

Should I pull the trigger on this?

Send Adrian Gonzalez
Send Chris Young
Receive Carlos Pena
Receive Hunter Pence
Receive Joel Hanrahan

I think I’d be selling low on Chris Young. I mean, yeah, his BABIP is low (20 ish points below career average), but his walk rate and steal rate just took a fucking nose dive. Hunter Pence looks pretty good, but his BABIP is sky high and he’s striking out quite a bit and the ISO is down… Adrian Gonzalez is just so fucking good and I’d hate to lose him and Pena is a little shit eater… I think I’m doing a good job of talking myself out of this trade. My relief corp is shit, but relievers aren’t really very valuable in this league anyway, so…

UNC's Greg Holt reminds me a little of Moreland

in that he’s split time between pitching and hitting and done both fairly effectively (hit .385 and slugged .631 in 65 ABs, threw 55 IP with 63 Ks out of the bullpen). I’d like to see what he could do if he concentrated on simply one aspect of the game.

Interesting.

On a related note, Mitch Moreland’s 1.6 WAR is 4th amongst the Rangers position players, 25th in the AL and higher than Justin Smoak’s 1.3 WAR.

Only Russell Martin has more WAR in less PA (1.6 WAR in 187 PA compared to Moreland’s 192 PA).

I wonder....

What would happen if Seattle didn’t like Rendon’s medical reports and decided to go with Lindor, a player that really impressed them in a private workout? What does that do to the board? Also, hearing that AZ is seriously considering Bauer over Hultzen. This will probably change a few times before tomorrow.

Something like this:
Pirates: Cole
Mariners: Lindor
DBacks: Bauer
Orioles: Bundy
Royals: Hultzen
Nationals: Starling
DBacks: Bradley
Indians: Gray
Cubs: Rendon
Padres: Barnes

This would be crazy. DBacks could land Bauer and Bradley? Are you kidding me? Could the Mariners really pass up the chance to draft an offensive weapon that will be ready to contribute as early as next season? I don’t see them passing on Rendon unless the medicals are shit, but what if the medicals are shit? The draft is awesome.

by jparks77 on Jun 5, 2011 11:53 AM CDT reply actions

well we know the M's are definitely taking a bat

so this scenario seems pretty plausible. I would be ecstatic as an AZ fan if my team landed those two arms. But then, it is pretty rare for a baseball team to have two picks that high. I can only think of the Strasburg/Storen Nationals draft as a comp.

I’ve also heard that Gray could slide, that he’s seen as a solid second option for a lot of teams.

Kiker and Beavan were two guys who had great stuff, but had to be reworked and neither are exactly success stories. Beavan may make it, but he’s a pretty different pitcher now.

I'm not sure...

you can compare Kiker or Beavan’s case to Meyer. I don’t remember the Rangers reworking Kiker until after he started sucking ass but they changed Beavan’s delivery to prevent his arm from falling off.

Meyer doesn’t need to reworked (if you think he need to be reworked then I rather the Rangers not pick him); he just need to refine his command.

by coolaid on Jun 5, 2011 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't touch Meyer

How many success stories are there for college pitchers with poor command who “figure it out” in pro ball? I can’t think of many…

Really don't think it'll matter.

Just about everyone has him going to the Nats at 23. Probably the most agreed upon pick in the latter half of the 1st among mocks so far.

for what its worth

Callis tweeted yesterday that he now thinks Bauer is the top college pitcher in the draft.

by clark on Jun 5, 2011 12:16 PM CDT reply actions

Anthony Meo and Dillon Howard...

Meo isn’t on Law’s, Goldstein’s, Callis’ or Piliere’s latest mock draft and Howard is only picked in Callis’ and Goldstein’s draft. Both are probably first round talents and there is a good chance one of those guys is a 33 and maybe even 37. Tomorrow should be fun.

by coolaid on Jun 5, 2011 12:25 PM CDT reply actions

I really like Dillow Howard

it’s strange that he’s falling. He’s an Arkansas commit, and they’re not in the UT/Vandy/UNC/Stanford league of getting kids to school

by clark on Jun 5, 2011 12:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I would love getting Dillon Howard

He’s another one of those prep pitchers that should be around at 33 and 37 that I’d be happy with along with Kelly, Stephenson, Ross, Beede, and Maples

by MonkeyEpoxy on Jun 5, 2011 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Howard

at 33 Maples at 37, would everyone go for that?

by Hull Fan on Jun 5, 2011 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Maples is a UNC commit

that combo could get pricey.

Oh dear
TCU standout RHP Kyle Winkler twice grabs elbow in pain during the first inning, departs after just 12 pitches against Oral Roberts. Wow.

by sprite on Jun 5, 2011 2:32 PM CDT reply actions

TCU... the new Rice?

at least when it comes to injured pitchers.

In all seriousness, that is a horrible development for that poor kid.

I saw OU’s Burch (is that his name?) left in the first yesterday. Not sure if it was injury or performance related, but he’s another top three round arm that now has some question marks.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Alabama CF Taylor Dugas

5’7" but twice as many walks as Ks. Hit .395 with a .525 OBP last year, numbers dipped slightly this year, but he’s an intriguing option as a table setter and he has surprising power numbers for his size. Have no idea about his defense. His coach thinks he’ll go somewhere between 3rd and 7th round. We usually don’t take his type of college player, but I always fall for them anyway.

oh hell no

don’t watch MLB the channel. Have the mlb.com stream, lsb, and maybe a site like minorleagueball.com up as well. It will be more than enough. Mayo can’t save the dumbasses on the network from telling us how great every player is.

After reading the Josh Bell article...

in this morning’s DMN, I’m now against taking him except in the late, late rounds. The kid is going to college unless everything his family has said is posturing. IMO, chances of that are very small.

Now, I’ve switched to hoping that a major league team is stupid enough to draft him in the first round so that better talent falls to us at 33 and 37.

I'm of the opinion

he’d sign if a team offered him Purke money.
So it’s just up to teams to weigh the pros and cons of that investment. Is a Josh Bell worth four Jackie Bradleys?

I’ve missed a lot of the discussion. We’re good with paying Josh Bell what it takes to sign?

his mom is a professor at UT ARlington on top of that. I can see him taking education pretty seriously.

Frakie P has a live draft blog that started at 8

Will be an all day event… Not a lot of Rangers questions, but he is by far the most fan accessible of the big time draft guys. Was great on draft day last year.

Assuming Osich isn't significantly hurt, Harrison and Osich.

I think Bell, Ross, Swihart, and Nimmo will be gone.

Would love the Astros to take Reed

Harrison and Swihart would make me immensely happy. FrankieP just said that Swihart would be ranked about the same as an OF instead of C; the bat is legitimate.

by Outworlder47 on Jun 6, 2011 10:52 AM CDT reply actions

But will he fall to us?

The Red Sox are our biggest competitors in this draft, so we have to hope they don’t take him. Someone’s mock had TB taking him the pick before us, but I don’t see that happening with the number of picks they have. They probably can’t afford to go overslot.
