J2 Signings

Renato Nunez, a 3B for Oakland is the biggest name so far. He signed with Oakland for 2.2 million dollars. His biggest asset is his bat. He will need some time to grow into his power, but he has a nice swing and doubles should come easy to him.

Yoel Araujo is an athletic CF who signed with the Rays for 800k. He has a big body structure and will probably end up as a corner OF'er. He has a good bat and that is his best tool.

Some other players have signed Danry Vazquez, OF,DET(1 millionish) and Jose Tovar, LHP, COL for 350K.

Kinda slow to start but that is the way the international signings go.

Yeah, he was supposed to be able to get up to the low 90s when he was drafted

but he couldn’t maintain it for more than an inning or 2. After that he would be in the upper 80s. Tonight the announcer had him at 93 multiple times, as late as the 5th inning.

This one scares me
Mazara is a wild card. He has tremendous raw power from the left side, but the emphasis is on raw, since most scouts surveyed don’t consider him in the class of Guzman or Hernandez. Mazara, who is represented by Ivan Noboa, doesn’t play in any of the top leagues in the Dominican Republic and has been showcased cautiously. Several teams have said they haven’t been able to see Mazara play much in game situations (a red flag in itself), noting that Mazara will often take batting practice without facing live pitching. Those who have seen him play in games have strong reservations about his ability to make consistent contact. Still, some team will likely take a gamble on his power potential.

I always connected Cody Buckel and Trevor Bauer in my head

because they were both slightly built Cali guys who seemed to have some good pitchability, but I didnt realize they were actually friends and likely Cody has done some learning of Bauer’s pitching methods. Im a huge fan of Bauer’s and think he’ll be an excellent pitcher, and I think Cody is starting to prove himself to be a very legit prospect as well.

On the year, Buckel (3-3) has a 2.28 ERA with 61 strikeouts over 47 1/3 innings. He credited some of his success to friend and fellow California native Trevor Bauer, the third overall pick in the 2011 Draft.

Also, by just reading some of that article, I think you can see that Buckel has a pretty

good understanding of what he’s doing on the mound and how to pitch to hitters. Another excellent job by our scouting department to find another talented HS pitcher with the right kind of makeup.

Well, I think again its alot about makeup

They’ll struggle, and its up to them to adjust and continue to refine who they are as a pitcher to succeed. Most of these kids the rangers are drafting have enough on their fastball and enough secondaries to be successful, but they’ll have to do a ton of refining and refreshing to get to the top just like any other player and much of that comes down to the coachability of the player, the coaching they recieve, the work they put in, and not getting hurt.

You may not have been blessed with an arm that can pump upper 90s fastballs and a hammer curve, but you can damn sure immerse yourself into film of opposing hitters and learn to become a master of sequencing

yea, the thing I look at with this is the list of some of the pitchers who have been the

very best pitchers in the game recently, especially guys like Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, and so on, don’t really have dominating stuff, just good stuff with great control and great pitching smarts with a serious desire to compete.

Im glad we also still have guys like Perez*2, NRam, Ogando, Feliz and so on who do have top shelf dominating stuff because those types certainly have a good portion of the top pitchers in the game list.

Its nice to have a diversity of pitching prospects, but it does seem that the Rangers have done an excellent job of scouting beyond the obvious top teir of talented young pitchers who might get drafted in round 1 because of they have that top of the line stuff. They have seemingly found alot of guys in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounds who have good stuff, not great, but have great makeups…. That, coupled with their willingness to also pour money into the LA markets and take risks on guys with big stuff too is a pretty awesome combo to build cool pitching depth in the system.

The Rangers have done so well recently drafting short HS pitchers...

that I can’t help but get even more excited to see Kevin Matthews. From some of the most recent scouting reports, he may have the best stuff out of all these pitchers (FB recently up to 94-95, plus CB, and CU with sink) to go along with great makeup and athleticism.

It’s going to be interesting when all this pitching talent gets to the majors. The first wave is already in AA. The Rangers will have have some very tough decisions deciding who to keep and who to use in trades. What a great problem to have.

by e2drummer on Jul 2, 2011 2:58 AM CDT up reply actions

yea, it will be

First decision that’s coming up is CJ. He’s definitely the best SP we have now, but resigning him may not be cost effective with all of these pitchers coming in.

by blalock84 on Jul 2, 2011 3:11 AM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

It would be unreasonable to expect all these guys to pan out, and they’ll take time to A) get to the majors, and B) adjust and thrive there once they do. Holland pwned the minor leagues and he’s still adjusting to the majors, though he was probably rushed. Feliz is still inconsistent and he’s waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy more talented than this group of guys.

The decision on whether to sign Wilson has nothing at all to do with this wave coming into AA right now. If you think Wilson will keep pitching this well, or reasonably close to it, for another few years you sign him.

by t ball on Jul 2, 2011 8:21 AM CDT up reply actions

On the contrary

Maybe an influx of young starting talent gives you confidence to sign CJ to an extension.

Being that if we are confident we have some TORP’s coming up, we won’t need the money to sign another ace in the future…

It’s at least a theory

by Jobu. on Jul 2, 2011 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Yea, Im just saying it MIGHT not be

who knows, if I was the one making the choices, the resigning CJ thing would be about as tough as they come. He’s gonna get some really, really good money and rightfully so, but we still have limited resources and guys like Hamilton, Cruz and all our big bats coming up on FA. We can’t have them all so I think this choice on CJ will really begin to set in motion what we do with those guys too.

Seemed like a smooth, quick, powerful swing

He lets pitchers come to him. Patient enough to take pitches outside the strike zone, and ready to punish mistakes. If I’m not mistaken, every dong he’s hit so far has been a meatball. That’s not really an indictment; it speaks to his approach, I think.
Cole and Parks could obviously speak more intelligently about this.

>mfw

by MonkeyEpoxy on Jul 3, 2011 3:15 AM CDT reply actions

Let me tell you something about those singles, though.

Shit was hit hard. His ground out was also harder than a typical ground out.

The first single was a rope, it just went straight to the right fielder. The one ball that wasn’t hit hard was a dribbler down the third base line that probably would have gone foul, but the third baseman got to it in what would be plenty of time, I think, for most catchers to be thrown out. Alfaro seems pretty quick, but I’d expect a lot of catching would slow him down.

The last single was a ground ball through the infield that I’m sure must have left a crater when it hit the ground.

He also seems to be pretty quick at getting his mask off and handling pitches in the dirt, but I’d like to get a second opinion from a scout on that.

I don't know if you saw the Tweet. . .

At one point, with a runner on third, a wild pitch got past him. He got to it with shocking quickness, and in one fluid motion grabbed the ball as it bounced off the wall with his bare hand in some slide move and rolled over to throw it accurately to the plate. Almost got the runner. Made the play close when I never thought a throw would even be worth trying. It was impressive, even if the run still scored.

The guy who was there watching Alfaro closely was visibly excited by it.

Some stuff said about Guzman after last year's under armour game at wrigley field
Ronald Guzman is a very athletic outfielder from the Dominican Republic that put on an impressive batting practice in the morning. He barreled up pitches to all fields as good as anyone at the event, and he’s only 15 years old. At 6’4’’, 180, scouts can easily project above-average power in the future. Guzman is a top international prospect for 2012.

by Tex2044 on Jul 3, 2011 5:51 PM CDT reply actions

Then there is this from the same event from Diamondscapescouting.com
Guzman, a Dominican outfielder eligible for the 2011 signing period beginning July 2nd, was overmatched in Saturday’s game action, but displayed strong corner outfield tools during the two workouts. A highly projectable frame and good athleticism in outfield actions are the first characteristics that jump out. Guzman projects well in right, with a solid set-up and arm action on throws, showing accuracy and what could eventually grow into plus arm strength with good leverage and carry. At bat, Guzman already generates some backspin and gets some carry when he barrels the ball. He loads high and gets loft in his swing plane, generating lots of leverage with his long arms. There is some length here, and is approach his raw, but the potential for plus power out of a lefty swing is highly enticing, and should serve him well come the international signing period this July.

I'd be ok with trading him

but he really has a nice season. Way too many K’s, but the great season means he is worth something at least on the trade market.

The main reason to trade him is that we have Olt behind him and Davis (sort of) in front of him with Beltre and Moreland manning the corners in the bigs. It is a position of strength right now, so he (or Davis) would be the guys to trade.

by Akalhar on Jul 4, 2011 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

he’s a straight 3B too, so you can’t move him around like we possibly can with Olt. Also, those K’s could ruin his season next year and his value may never be this high again, but who knows.

AZL Angels

Chevez Clarke, who some thought was a better pick than Skole out of GA high schools is in his 2nd year with the AZL Angels. Hit .216/.294/.389 with 14 BB and 55 SO last year. This year he is at .130/.200/196 with 4 BB and 17 SO with the AZL Angels.

Josh Sale is in his 1st season with the Appy League Rays. He is hitting .171/.277/.317. His only 2 XBH are 2 HR.

Skole may not pan out, but I trust our scouting department more and more. Even Deglan is turning it on lately. They are both a full 2 levels above Clarke and Sale, performing at a higher level(SSS with Sale, but still)

It's a huge improvement, but temper it a little bit

He doesn’t play everyday, so it’s only about 50 AB. Still, 25% SO is much better than the 40% he was at earlier in the year.

Deglan has a bit more pop than Skole, and is a flyball hitter right now as opposed to Skole's 50% ground ball

He can take a walk and is pretty good defensively from what we have heard, so if he can get his strikeout% down to below 25% by the end of the season, I will have to start thinking about putting him in the top 10-15 of Rangers prospects.

Bonds the year he hit 73 hit a HR every 6.52 AB
McGuire the year he hit 70 hit a HR every 7.27 AB
McGuire the year he hit 65 hit a HR every 8.02 AB
McGuire the next year hit 32 in 236 AB: 7.375 AB
Sosa the year he hit 66 hit a HR every 9.74 AB
Sosa the year he hit 63 hit a HR every 9.92 AB
Sosa the year he hit 64 hit a HR every 9.01 AB

I’m not trying to compare Davis to any of these guys, just trying to show how ridiculously hot he is right now. McGuire and Bonds were aided by the fact that they can take a walk, so their ABs remained low. Davis refusal to take a walk hurts him as a player, but it makes the frequency that he’s hitting HRs even more ridiculous.

Translated
On July 2 was an unforgettable day for the prospect Ronald Guzman. In the morning signed a $ 3.5 million with Texas, while the later graduating from high school in the city of La Vega.

For Guzman, 16, signing with the Rangers is a dream come true, while graduating from high school, is a platform for the whole morning becoming an enterprise administrator, if you can not become a professional Baseball.

“Nobody knows what the future might hold me if they do not achieve the cherished dream of every young person achieves a contract with a team that is reaching the big leagues,” Guzman said. “If you do not get to do it, I go to college to study business administration, career for which I have always shown passion,” he said.

The young talent who studied at St. Thomas Aquinas College, was ranked one of the best Dominican prospects signed by an organization of baseball in the majors with a bonus of over three million dollars.

“Since childhood he was always passionate about the ball. On many occasions called him to eat, but still in the game. I paid attention and had to go get it. After returning home to eat, but his ball to his side, "says Margarita Cepeda, mother of Guzman.

His beginnings in baseball are recorded at the Country Club of La Vega.

Fausto De Rosario’s hand, a doctor who had a small makeshift stage at the recreational area, Guzman received the knowledge of the sport, which took in its entirety.

“I had six years from the stadium. From then on we gave him the necessary follow-up that managed to develop next to a group of people who trained him, among them Eddy Robles, who is his coach, "explained his father, Manuel Guzman.

The young prospect took his first steps in baseball as a pitcher, but was later changed to gardener position still holds.

“In school I always asked permission to go to practice, a request that was given by the directors. It was a big passion than he felt as a child playing baseball. They were consistent with me and gave me support, "said Guzman.

The adventures of Lugo Dawel

Guzman’s case is different from Dawel Lugo, who in his hometown of Bani spent much of the day behind a herd of goats, playing Vitillo and occasionally hitting almonds.

Thus was born the passion of the young prospect tip the balance in sport of baseball. “He was always behind the goats,” said Lugo, who lives in the community of Catalina in the southern city. “There was even a small stadium where we had fun playing and batting Vitillo almonds along with other children in the environment,” he said.

Lugo, as Guzman is one of the six prospects in the “Dominican League Prospect” signed by several major league organizations of varying amounts. Banilejo Young received a bonus of $ 1.3 million by the Toronto Blue Jays. The largest firm is granted for a shortstop in Latin America during the “July 2”.

Other prospects who were signed are Manuel Marcos, gardener received a bonus of $ 800,000 for the Boston Red Sox, Miguel Andujar, a third baseman from San Cristobal, won $ 750,000 by the New York Yankees, midfielder Luis Reynoso, who made a pact for $ 700,000 with the Houston Astros, and Eric Valdez, a patrolman who agreed to $ 325,000 with the Giants in San Francisco. Several of these prospects were contracts that are above some Dominicans who operated in the majors, as Bartolo Colon, the Yankees, whose contract is for a million dollars.

Pending the physical

Mazara Nomar surprised many with the agreement reached last Saturday of Texas, an organization that was aggressive in signing prospect in Latin America. An executive from Texas told El Caribe that the contract will be formalized after the teenage gardener meets the physical requirements to be submitted later in the day in Texas.

Last Saturday saw five million dollars, the highest bonus hit by a Dominican prospect, exceeding that obtained by Michael Inoa (U.S. $ 4.25 million) with Oakland in 2008.

Cody Buckel

From today’s Goldstein Future Shock article

Cody Buckel, RHP, Rangers (Low-A Hickory)
You ever sit around wondering if it’s even possible for the Rangers to have even more talented young arms to talk about? The answer, of course, is yes. A second-round pick last year out of a Southern California High School, Buckel began the year pitching out of the Hickory bullpen, but he joined the rotation in May and has seen his stock skyrocket. He has a 1.98 ERA in eight starts, including Friday night’s outing that included a career-high 10 strikeouts in 5 1/3 one-hit innings. While hardly a monster on a scouting level, Buckel does have above-average velocity and command, as well as a good breaking ball and advanced changeup for his age. He just turned 19 in mid-June, and in a system loaded with young, talented pitchers, he’s now more than just another name in the crowd

by Tex2044 on Jul 5, 2011 11:13 AM CDT reply actions

From the same article
Khris Davis, OF, Brewers (High-A Brevard County)
A seventh-round pick in 2009 out of Cal State Fullerton, Davis hit an impressive .280/.398/.499 for Low-A Wisconsin last year. He entered the year as the 13th-best prospect in a bad Brewers system, as college players from major programs are supposed to hit in the Midwest League. As a 23-year-old in the Florida State League, Davis is still old for the level, but he doesn’t control where he plays; all he can do is hit, and he’s doing just that. With three home runs in his last five games, Davis is hitting .331/.429/.568 in 75 games, and at some point it’s going to be time to take the league leader in both on-base percentage and slugging seriously. He’s not especially big or toolsy, but he keeps proving he really can hit, and a promotion to Double-A with continued production could finally put him on the map.

Article about Guzman and Mazara in English

Here is the link.

Two months after they finalized a $15.5 million deal with five-tool outfielder and Cuban defector, Leonys Martin, the Texas Rangers’ front office plucked two more big-time talents from the international market. Texas signed two sixteen-year-old Dominican phenoms, Ronald Guzman and Nomar Mazara on Saturday– the opening day of the international signing period. The two players– both outfielders– were widely considered to be two of the top talents in this year’s round of international amateur talent.

After they kept a stingy vice-grip over their draft-budget during the MLB Amateur June Draft earlier this month, the Rangers front office let their wallets loose on Saturday. Mazara signed for a record $5 million dollar contract– $750,000 more than the previous high that the A’s gave to Michael Ynoa in ’08. The club then gave a $3.5 million dollar bonus to Guzman, bringing their total spending to $8.5 million.

While Mazara received the bigger bonus, both BaseballNewsHound.com and Baseball America believe that Guzman is the superior prospect. Guzman, already standing at 6’4″ and weighing in at a firm 195 pounds as a sixteen year old, should have average to plus raw power once he matures. His plate discipline and batting eye are advanced for his age and his bat control and swing path allow him to make hard contact with pitches in all quadrants of the strikezone. His crouched stance keeps his strikezone manageable despite his height and he does a good job using the entire field on his hits.

Playing with top American (high school) outfield prospects Derek Starling and Dwight Smith Jr. in the 2010 Under Armour All-American Game, Guzman held his own despite having an 0-4 day at the plate. His swing shows plenty of promise and he’s an intelligent player. While his arm strength is below average, he’s more than athletic enough to man left field for an MLB club one day.

Mazara isn’t as polished as Guzman, though he boasts a far more exciting profile. Mazara’s raw power rates with Elier Hernandez and any of this year’s class of international prospects. According to BaseballAmerica.com, the 6’5″ lefty offers electric bat speed and he generates immense leverage in his swings. His lanky frame still has plenty of room to fill out and when he adds more muscle, he could flash 30+(big-league) homerun power. His big leg kick (a la Gary Sheffield) and massive cut can throw off his swing-timing however, exacerbating the contact-issues created by his height.

While Mazara is the more intriguing prospect, Guzman is a surer bet to reach the MLB. Guzman is the better hitter and superior athlete, with a smooth swing and good hand-eye coordination.

While the Boston Red Sox– along with numerous– other clubs were in hot pursuit of Mazara, the Rangers ultimately took home the prized prospect. With Leonys Martin raking away in the Texas League and with other recent international signees Jurickson Profar and Martin Perez rating among the organization’s top prospects, Mazara and Guzman will only add to a system already stocked in talent.

While Mazara is the more intriguing prospect, Guzman is a surer bet to reach the MLB.

Rangers may again have the top system

Just looking at a fan’s top 100 list he has 8 Rangers in the top 100, 4 in the top 50. He has Profar to high(has him top 10) and Wieland way too high(top 50) and obviously is just a fan and not a publication or anything but it got me thinking the Rangers may again have the best farm. After the top 8 there are still legit guys like Scheppers Perez and Jackson and many have said the Rangers have the best depth even before the huge J2 this year.

by groundingout on Jul 5, 2011 6:43 PM CDT reply actions

This is what I'm saying

We’ve brought in too much talent and too many of our prospects have taken leaps forward in development this year.

Especially if Scheppers starts to look dominant, again.

Erlin is probably a little high and for whatever reason this community is lower on Loux than everyone else I see. Maybe others are high on him due to being a former high pick or maybe people here are low on him because of how he came into the system, who knows.

From today's Baseball America chat:
Matt (NJ): Jim, where does profar rank now among current prospects with his surprise power so far this year? Is he the best SS prospect in the minors besides Machado?

Jim Callis: Profar continues to impress and he has grown into more of his offensive potential this year. I have him ranked 14th overall, second among shortstops behind Machado, who I have at No. 7.

I’m so stoked. It’s possible our fanbase is somehow underrating a prospect for once.

Erlin at 36

Erlin is a gorgeous stat line with a noticeable lack of eye witness endorsement. Good on him if he’s top 50, but he seems like a guy whose stats have to be discounted. The stuff is mid-rotation ceiling, that’s what I keep reading.

by hightowersmith on Jul 6, 2011 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Prospects with mid-rotation ceilings should absolutely make the top-50

if their performance shows they are a relatively good bet to reach their ceiling. Only a handful of prospects have TORP/Superstar potential with the results to back it up, so the rest of the list has to be filled with “lower” ceiling guys.

It’s certainly the highest ranking I’ve seen for Erlin, but it’s not an unreasonable ranking based on his stats this season.

maybe, but its not like there aren't really good starting pitchers in the majors who have or have had similar

Erlin’s statistical profile shows that he can miss bats and he’s doing that at the AA level now too, that’s more important than velocity readings.

Wandy has a better curve and throws a 2 seamer about as much as he throws his 4 seamer.

Jason Vargas has, evidently, developed an insane cutter. Zito throws more 2 seamers than 4 seamers and it’s not even worth comparing the curves.

IMO, the key to Erlin’s development is how he rounds out his repertoire.

TORP = Top of rotation potential, meaning the very top of the rotation (ie, best starting pitcher on the staff, or a #1). I think your definition is the standard one.

That's a good point.

I guess what I’m saying is Erlin’s stat line seems to be better than his stuff.

I’m the first guy to fly off the handle at a nice stat line, so I guess that’s why I notice commentary on Erlin.

by Tex2044 on Jul 6, 2011 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions

If the "exhibition games in the Dominican this summer"

equals the informal July 2nd league formed every year for the incoming signees … then this is completely normal, IIRC. And getting invited to fall instructs would be normal, too for the top signees.

by shroomer on Jul 6, 2011 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Is the quote from the article below normal?

I’d like to know if that is his thoughts on it or if someone told him that, but asked not to be quoted.

by Tex2044 on Jul 6, 2011 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, this sounds normal from the way JC has described things in the past ...
Since Mazara signed a 2012 contract, he’s not eligible to compete in the Dominican Summer League now. So he’ll go back to the Rangers’ Dominican Republic academy in Boca Chica and participate in some non-sanctioned games, sort of like instructional league. He’ll return in September to Instructional League in the states and begin his professional career in the Rangers’ pipeline.

by shroomer on Jul 6, 2011 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

His leg kick seems more like Ichiro's than JuanGone.

Mazara rotates his shoulders with his hips during his leg kick. I think both Juan and Pudge used the leg kick as a timing mechanism more than for loading.

From Scott Lucas.....Deglan
Deglan hit bottom on June 1st, when another hitless night dropped him to .187/.287/.275. Since then, he’s hitting an amazing .333/.425/.508. I confess that I thought I’d entered the data incorrectly when I saw those slash stats. Maybe a couple of Chris Davis games were lurking in my spreadsheet? Nope. Deglan really is hitting that well in his last five weeks.

Profar
During the game, a foul ball from Profar left the stadium, hitting a building that was to the left of the foul pole. "That’s all I needed to see," Newman said. "An 18-year-old who can turn on a pitch like that – wow." On Saturday, Newman told me to be quiet for a minute and listen to Profar’s BP. "The ball just pops off his bat," he said.

Hm
Add plus defense and that he is one of only a few prospects in the minors who profiles as a true shortstop, and it’s easy to see why Profar is highly regarded.

Has something changed? I’m under the impression that he will likely stay at SS but his range may not be “true SS.”

So either the legend grows, or scouts are becoming overly giddy about this kid

by Jobu. on Jul 7, 2011 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

He's supposed to have above average defense

His speed isn’t elite, but he is quick and has elite instincts per Jason Parks who raved about his instincts in an Up and In podcast. Said he is always in the right place at the right time. He apparently has a very strong arm as well.
