7/10 Minors - Futures Game Thread

July 10 in what is increasingly looking like the top minor league system in baseball:

SPO-8:30 - Alvarez

HIC-4:00 - Jackson?

MYR-12:30 - Loux

FRS-6:00 - Erlin?

RRE-7:00 - Feldman

AZL-PM - Parra?

Feldman makes his last rehab start, and I believe he must be on the ML roster after.  Who gets bumped?

Also, the MILB Futures Game is at 5:00 today, featuring Martin Perez and Jurickson Profar.  The game is on ESPN2.  Profar is the youngest participant, being 4 months younger than Bryce Harper.

Wow. I didn't realize how solid Loux has been.

I hope they move him up to Frisco pretty soon.

Yep, Loux has matched the other top A+ arms all season

Wieland and Erlin though seemed to have gotten the most attention.

Loux’s WHIP is basically double what Erlin had. Hopefully the weird wildness he was fighting early on is over with.

You're damn right

you know how long its been since an Aggie made a legit big league impact? Arguably Knoblauch. So yeah, I think we’d love to see it happen, especially if we got to see it happen with the Rangers.

Also, I was joking. Any Aggie knows about the supposed anti-Aggie bias that permeates the elitist media.

So you should be able to go back and scroll thru the archived game to see the Ranger bits for about 24 hours or so until they clear the archive.

Does Leonys make his AAA debut tonight?

Every day I find myself in wonder at how awesome he’s been, starting his career in AA and owning the league. I don’t think I could defect, leave my family, spend many months establishing residence in a 3rd country and negotiating with teams and then just show up and be amazing. Like Ogando, he’s gone through a lot just to get here so I can’t imagine him being ruffled by anything that happens in the game.

Neither is Wieland, and he was up before Loux.

Look at what the Rangers did with Wieland. Performed well, already had 50+ IP at A+ level from 2010 so had about 140IP before they moved him up to AA. Ross is now in the same situation, albeit slightly past the same IP mark (remember he had about 50+ IP at Bakersfield last year too).

by LiamP on Jul 10, 2011 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Wieland >> Ross, though.

This isn’t a Wieland vs. Loux debate anymore, it’s a Ross vs. Loux. And Loux is better.

by Aqua on Jul 10, 2011 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Personally, I don't think there's that much of a discrepancy between Wieland and Ross.

Either way, it’s a matter of how the promotion is earned. If you take the approach they had with Wieland and apply it to Ross, it’s likelier he’s up next IMO.

by LiamP on Jul 10, 2011 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

They are quite a bit different.

Ross is an insane groundballer (1.66 GO:AO this season, which is his WORST ratio by far). Wieland is a flyball pitcher.

Wieland strikes out quite a few fellows and walks very few. Ross doesn’t strike out many people, and walks quite a few more than Wieland (not bad, but compared to Erlin or Wieland, fairly meh).

Wieland projects (based what I am told) as a solid #4. Ross doesn’t (though would make a decent long man or reliever, or a spot starter). I think Ross has fewer pitches at his command as well.

by Akalhar on Jul 10, 2011 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Wieland's been more hittable historically.

Ross’s FB has more movement at similar velocity, and based on what I’ve read, I’m led to believe that Ross’s hard slider is a slightly better secondary offering than Wieland’s curve (could be wrong on that). Wieland has better command and a better frame, but I’ve always been quite high on Ross. I know a lot of scouts think he’s a future reliever but he’s been successful enough as a starter thus far to give him the benefit of the doubt.

by LiamP on Jul 10, 2011 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I think you are probably right

Ross stuff probably profiles and plays a bit better out of the back of starting rotation than Weiland’s might. His stats definitely give you hope for a really solid 4 or 5th starter who will give you decent K/BB without giving up many HRs

by blalock84 on Jul 10, 2011 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions

It all depends on what they think the future is for each pitcher

I could see them pushing Loux if they see him as more of a starter. I could also see them pushing him if they see him as more of an injury concern. And loux just has a higher ceiling.

If Loux is moved up to Frisco, two questions:

1) Who does he replace?
2) Who replaces him?

Regarding the second question, I would guess Tepesch, based mostly on his age and that he has pitched very well since June.

No clue on the first question though.

1) There’s actually an open spot after Pimentel/Erlin/Perez/Wieland. So, Bleier/Snyder/Fill in guy.

Swings like that will put you high on my follow list. I haven’t had a chance to break him down in depth, but early returns make me look forward to the time I can go in depth on him. Strong kid with quick hands, yes ma’am.

Steve Carter: Speaking of young Rangers prospects, Ronald Guzman tickles my fancy.

Project some strength on that frame, take the arms out a tiny bit, but put a death wish on the person who dares change his hands and watch him rake. It’s rare to see a young player who knows how to work his hands like that. The ones that do usually end up being serious players.

I'd have to see both gloves at SS

to decide, but from what I know, Andrus has better range at short, but Profar has plus range as well. The two of them up the middle? Get rid of the phrase “grounder up the middle” from your vocab. Maybe Kins as DH/utility guy (Young’s current role) for a year as Profar first gets into the majors? That would be a scary team for a year, ceteris paribus

Odor with a leadoff BB

Robinson hit a pitch off the umpire into CF.
Cone singled on a hard hit GB off of the SS glove, drove in Odor.
Adams drove in 2 runs on a double down the line, Robinson scored, Cone scored from 1st without a throw. He’s really really fast.

9-0 now, still only 1 out

10-0

Pimentel called out on a pitch that everyone thought was outside. Pimentel was talking to the umpire and the Catcher took offense that he was arguing it when they’re up 10-0. Then they started arguing, Pimentel is tossed.

Wow.

I don’t care if the ump is just trying to end the other team’s misery. The ump can’t call one that far out of the strike zone and not expect a reaction. If Spokane scores 30 runs because the other team can’t throw a strike, so be it. It’s not up to the umps to influence the game.

If Profar gets promoted does that mean you send Leury Garcia to AA and risk undoing the success he’s had recently? Do you send Profar to AA and skip MB? That would kinda fit the Rangers MO. Does Sardinas replace Profar in Hickory or do you promote Odor?

Marteen shows why he needs to season in the minors a few more years. If he was brought up now he’d be another Holland. Show flashes of brilliance with the flashes of ugly being more of the norm. I think that's the problem.

People just brush off his consistency problems like he’s just going to magically get it one of these days. He might not. I’ve been watching him for 2 years now and I’m no more impressed with him now than I was the first time I saw him. Yeah he’s got potentially filthy stuff but if he can’t spot it then it doesn’t really matter. I’d just hate to hold on to him too long while banking on his command to improve.

Consistency

A lot of the times it stems from maturity or comfort. If the guy needs some more reps or innings to feel comfortable with his stuff, with certain situations, then it could happen suddenly or at least over the course of a year (this year he’s been much more consistent than last).

Give the kid some time. This isn’t Kasey Kiker we’re talking about here. This is a kid who has serious talent right now and needs some work and time to refine those skills. Just because he hasn’t stormed through the system and made his debut already does not mean he’s any less of a prospect.

What's the rumpus?

Joey Matches question.
Let’s pretend for argument’s sake that the Rangers could snag Carlos Beltran from the Mets (and pay only $2 million of his remaining contractual balance, while New York subsidizes the rest) by relinquishing, say, Luke Jackson (high ceiling, but a greater chance of busting) and Joe Wieland (higher floor; projects as a mid-to-back-end starter) — two solid, middle-tier pitching prospects that are both top-15 talents in a loaded system. Would you pull the trigger? If not, where would you draw the line? Or does Beltran not interest you in the slightest?

I would do Wieland and LuJack for Beltran if NY covers the other $7m. Absolutely. I know AJM doesn’t think that’s enough.

With the Royals 6th best pitcher being outside of their best prospect, that means 2 teams.

Son of Judeska and Chesmond
Best Swing: Rangers shortstop Jurickson Profar is no stranger to the big stage. He played in Williamsport, Pa. two years in a row when he pitched and played shortstop for Curacao in the Little League World Series when he was 11 and 12, and he starred again with the spotlight on him. As an 18-year-old with only half a season of low Class A experience, Profar should have been overmatched against Twins Triple-A righthander Kyle Gibson, but instead he swing at the first pitch he saw and put a beautiful lefthanded swing on a 91 mph fastball, sending it for a line-drive triple into right center field to drive in a run. Even more remarkable is that Profar’s lefthanded swing is still in its infancy.

“When I signed I started switch-hitting,” said Profar, who signed on July 2, 2009. “I could swing lefthanded before, but I never did it before in games when I was in Curacao.”

With well-above average defense including a very strong arm, average speed and power, a big-league-level approach, and fantastic makeup, he’s the best shortstop prospect in the game, and before you ask, I’m well aware of what Baltimore’s Manny Machado has done this year.

For those who haven't seen enough... Repost of the Scouting the Sally video on Profar

Scouting Profar

I’m still not a fan of his RH swing — too much shoulder used to generate whip but less so than last year. The thing that really stands out to me is how his hands stay back and how he controls them coming through even though his shoulders are wide open.

His LH swing, however, looks very, very nice. Lots of lower half torque, quick bat with hands that dive right into the ball.

With some added shoulder and leg mass, he swing looks like he could continue to post decent power numbers.

I loooove that he has more BB than K. Big time improvement over what he posted in Spokane, in that regard, and probably a reason he’s hitting with more authority this year.

Law from the futures game...
• Jurickson Profar (Texas) was the youngest player (18) in the game and went up there to get his hacks, putting the first pitch in play in each of his two at bats, popping one out and driving a triple to deep left center on a 91 mph fastball. He looked overanxious in BP too, but did manage to square up an average fastball and showed off his ability to run and instincts.
