Our midway Zachary Phillips update. Very meh. 4.43era with a 3.85 FIP and .333 BABIP.   But if you take away his numbers in day games (2.1ip 9r 8er) his numbers are back to a 2.98 era with a 2:1 K/B ratio. He's still not doing well when he comes in with runners on, which is definitely a concern. Oh well.

Slow day in the minors today

Sucks when it’s also a slow few days in the majors

Lookin forward to DPerez and Buckel tomorrow. And to see how many walks MDLS can throw up

Any news on how many games Odor and West have gotten?

What's the rumpus?

Profar begins next year at AA.

I hope he can put on a bit of weight this offseason.

Let’s look at that potential 2012 Frisco team:
Perez, Erlin, Loux, Grimm, Wieland
Olt, Profar, Chirino?, 1B (Bianucci? Mendonca? McGuiness?)
Beltre, Strausborger, RF (Richmond? Bianucci?)

Frisco would be worth obsessing over if the Rangers didn’t also have prospect awesomeness coming in at Hickory and MB.
Hickory: DPerez, Payano, Lamb, Matthews, Alfaro, Odor, Robinson, Hanser, West
MB: Buckel, Jackson, Tepesch, Cone, Skole, Deglan, Telis, Villanueva

Nah. He's the Captain in Hickory, and it makes sense to let him finish the season there for two reasons.

(1) Let him lead that team into the post season.
(2) He needs a little meat on his bones before regularly facing guys 5-6 years older than him.

I think the most likely destination for Erlin to start 2012 is AAA

I think there’s an outside chance he gets a shot at the ML rotation in ST.

pretty unreal the way he’s pitched the two years in full season ball… Im not sure you’d find someone with his k/bb ratios at his age anywhere in the minors.

In the past 5 years

Only one pitcher has thrown up a season of 7+ K/BB: Madison Bumgarner (7.81) in his low-A age 18 season in 2008.

Erlin is sitting at an even 10.0 right now. Of course, the Blue Jays have something called a Nestor Molina floating around in A+ with an 11.63, but screw him.

Perez, Erlin, possibly Wieland

Profar will be a Dodger. Clayton Kershaw will be a Ranger.

I would love to see Kershaw here.

How old will he be when he’s a free agent? 26? I bet he’d love to come pitch for Nolan Ryan since he grew up here. But if we decided to accelerate the process and give the Dodgers some prospects I’d be for it. He’d be a nice replacement if CJ leaves…

Well, the Dodgers just acquired Juan Rivera, so they apparently are in a dealing mood.

But, if the Rangers actually traded for Kershaw, I would quit my job, move to back to the state I swore I’d never return to, and sell blood for season tickets, living in whatever shack I can find in Arlington.

Well, we could turn this into a really fun hypothetical thread and ask everyone who they would be willing

to blow up the farm to acquire. As deep as the farm system is, this trade could blow it up.

Dan Haren netted Brett Anderson, Chris Carter, Carlos Gonzalez (a piece of the Matt Holliday trade), Greg Smith, Dana Evelend.

Why the Dodgers would trade him is beyond me, but I would guess you need upside at nearly every level to beat the market for him, especially this year.

Holland or Harrison (ML ready), Perez (AAA), Wieland (AA), Profar (A) seems stout, but even that might be light this year.

Maybe you could keep Profar and give a couple other A-level guys.

I don't see how that trade happens without Profar.

Shooting totally in the dark, I think the Dodgers would want something like Perez, Erlin, Profar, Olt, and two of something like Jackson and Buckel.

Probably not, and I agree they would want players closer to contributing, because

he has to keep them as a good draw on TV. They’re already gonna lose Matt Kemp.

Has to be a good amount of ML-ready talent along with high upside farm talent.

Throw Holland into that trade and it’s gotta be close.

these things have a way of working themselves out quite quickly. Realistically, the Rangers should go into each season with 7-8 options ready to pitch throughout the course of the year.

The more I look at what Perez has done this year, the more sense that makes.

He’s near the top in FIP (7th for pitchers with more than 50 IP) and got there by vastly improving on his H/9 and HR. Folks around here still bitch about his inconsistency and walks, but he’s improved in those two areas this year, even if he isn’t the present Ace we all want him to be.

He’s deserving of a reward and a new challenge and some work with Terry Clark.

I don't disagree.

I just want for people to realize that a realistic time table for him involves not seeing him with the Rangers until 2013. He may show up next year, but we shouldn’t expect/count on it.

I think the worst is with Profar.

If you carefully look at what Parks has been saying about him, it’s that he’s a very polished player who is mature for his age and would be able to handle a more advanced assignment now/soon.

I feel like this is getting mixed in with Profar’s numbers to create more helium for Profar than is warranted. At some point, Profar will likely be considered a Top 10 talent and people will assume that means he can be the next Alex Rodriguez or some such all based on the assumption that a very young player performing well at a relatively high level means that the ceiling is truly outrageous.

by GhettoBear04 on Jul 12, 2011 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I trust what Parks says completely about the people that he has seen.

With Profar, Parks hasn’t seen him (outside of the two Futures Game ABs) to the point that I give him the deference I normally would.

The people who have seen him, though, paint a very different picture of his potential. A picture that has basically exploded this season as Profar has. And I’m not one of the ones that thinks “ceilings” for prospects don’t change— I have no idea how Profar’s ceiling hasn’t gone up over the course of this year.

That's a good point,

but I still think we need to be wary of the idea that one of the things that’s making Profar so good right now (his in game awareness) is hard to project a ceiling for. It means that he will likely get the most out of his tools, but we aren’t talking about the tools of Hanley Ramirez.

Profar to AA this year

That’s just nuts. It would shock me if this happened. Profar to AA at this time next year? maybe, but we shouldn’t expect it.

I think with the inebriation, comes a lack of faith as well. Talking about guys like Martin perez as a borderline bust or guys like Roman mendez having a mediocre year so far and thus not looking at him as anything but another Carlos Melo. Loux not being in the same class as Erlin. Mendonca striking out too much to be worth anything, etc etc

I sometimes get wrapped up in the hysteria too, but the steps up that some of these players are making are crazy (NeRa, Wieland, Profar, Odor) and shouldn’t be expected for every prospect in the system

The waves of talent is what gets me excited

2009 – 2010 was exciting because we saw so many players promoted, but on the inverse of that, the minors were laid a little bare. 2010 was a pretty slow year on the minors front with only a few players stepping up but more taking a step back or just getting traded.

But unless we have a massive graduation next year (Schepp, MPerez, Leonys, NeRa) the minors will continue to produce excitement at every level. And at every level I mean all 6 levels. Mind boggling when before we were fortunate to see Hurley+Whittleman+Lemon in the same game

I was just thinking the other day how when Danks was drafted, he immediately went near the top of the prospect rankings.

There’s almost no aspect of the organization that isn’t worth being excited about right now.

The farm system has exciting players at every level, and a new crop of awesome signed on the International FA market (ok, I feel a little tinge of dimming effect from the draft, though I’m warming to Matthews over Daniel Norris).

We get reports from Cole and Parks.

Big club is in 1st place and looking to add an impact piece, great public relations coming out of the FO, upgrades to the park.

And if we had a team like we had 3-4 years ago

Neil Ramirez and Martin Perez would have been up already just because there would’ve been a real need for them. But we have the luxury to let them develop more.

And when TB has 5 good starters in their rotation they can afford to leave the prospects marinate on the farm. But Moore out of the bullpen next year with that arsenal would be pretty sick

Their announcer just went on about how why he thinks Savannah has such a low team ERA and said he thinks there’s some scoring adjustments going on when they play on their home field. He then went on to say he’s not trying to suggest collusion…..he’s coming out and directly saying it is happening. It was awkward to hear his tangent.

Other than he’s 6’0", 175 and has a tremendous K rate. I know he’s 21 and pitching in a rookie league, but I can’t get past that K rate. It seems like he should finish the year in Spokane, at which point we’ll have a better gauge on his prospect status.

Also, the AAA staff lost Delcarman, McClung and Feldman over the AS break. Can we expect some promotions soon? Fingers crossed for Perez and Flores moving to RR and Loux moving to Frisco.

Basically the same as last season

It’s hard to evaluate him at the plate because of the shoulder. He’s only batting RH at this point, and as a switch-hitter he doesn’t have much experience with the RH/RH matchup. On defense, he looks good, with the purest actions at the position in the system, and a very strong arm (although the mechs aren’t always fluid or fundamental). He’s added a little mass to his lanky frame, but he has a long way to go in that department. His speed is gaining more consistency, as his clocks are routinely in the 70 grade range from the RH.

He’s a true Venezuelan shortstop with plus-plus speed and contact ability with the bat. Despite the injury setback, Sardinas’s ceiling remains quite high. Long way off.

Profar from Badler's Chat today

Profar, Andrus, Sardinas, and Odor
EQVLPVEQVLP (Taiwan): Higher ceiling. Jurickson Profar, Luis Sardinas, Rougned Odor or Andrus?

Ben Badler: Profar. He has a chance to be a better hitter than Andrus. But man, I really like all four of them. That’s ridiculous.

Other than that he’s a total badass.
