7/12-13 Minors Thread
Son of Judeska and Chesmond is back in action tonight.

Spokane: David Perez 9:00
Myrtle Beach: Miguel De Los Santos 6:05
Round Rock: ASG
AZRL: Blackwell?
Our midway Zachary Phillips update. Very meh. 4.43era with a 3.85 FIP and .333 BABIP. But if you take away his numbers in day games (2.1ip 9r 8er) his numbers are back to a 2.98 era with a 2:1 K/B ratio. He's still not doing well when he comes in with runners on, which is definitely a concern. Oh well.

Slow day in the minors today
Sucks when it’s also a slow few days in the majors
Lookin forward to DPerez and Buckel tomorrow. And to see how many walks MDLS can throw up
Any news on how many games Odor and West have gotten?
What's the rumpus?
Profar begins next year at AA.
I hope he can put on a bit of weight this offseason.
Let’s look at that potential 2012 Frisco team:
Perez, Erlin, Loux, Grimm, Wieland
Olt, Profar, Chirino?, 1B (Bianucci? Mendonca? McGuiness?)
Beltre, Strausborger, RF (Richmond? Bianucci?)
Frisco would be worth obsessing over if the Rangers didn’t also have prospect awesomeness coming in at Hickory and MB.
Hickory: DPerez, Payano, Lamb, Matthews, Alfaro, Odor, Robinson, Hanser, West
MB: Buckel, Jackson, Tepesch, Cone, Skole, Deglan, Telis, Villanueva
Rock the J2, JD!
Profar might end the year in Frisco

Nah. He's the Captain in Hickory, and it makes sense to let him finish the season there for two reasons.
(1) Let him lead that team into the post season.
(2) He needs a little meat on his bones before regularly facing guys 5-6 years older than him.
Rock the J2, JD!
With Ross probably replacing him in Frisco?

I think the most likely destination for Erlin to start 2012 is AAA
I think there’s an outside chance he gets a shot at the ML rotation in ST.

he's so polished for a 20 yr old HS kid
pretty unreal the way he’s pitched the two years in full season ball… Im not sure you’d find someone with his k/bb ratios at his age anywhere in the minors.

Only one pitcher has thrown up a season of 7+ K/BB: Madison Bumgarner (7.81) in his low-A age 18 season in 2008.
Erlin is sitting at an even 10.0 right now. Of course, the Blue Jays have something called a Nestor Molina floating around in A+ with an 11.63, but screw him.

Perez, Erlin, possibly Wieland
in AAA.
Profar will be a Dodger. Clayton Kershaw will be a Ranger.
Kidding about the last thing. Too improbable.

I would love to see Kershaw here.
How old will he be when he’s a free agent? 26? I bet he’d love to come pitch for Nolan Ryan since he grew up here. But if we decided to accelerate the process and give the Dodgers some prospects I’d be for it. He’d be a nice replacement if CJ leaves…
Well, the Dodgers just acquired Juan Rivera, so they apparently are in a dealing mood.
But, if the Rangers actually traded for Kershaw, I would quit my job, move to back to the state I swore I’d never return to, and sell blood for season tickets, living in whatever shack I can find in Arlington.
Rock the J2, JD!
So how much would it take to get Kershaw?
Obviously you’d give Profar and Perez. What else would you give?

What else would you want to give or have to give?
Pretty much everything is the answer to the latter.

If I were the Dodgers
What you would have to give me for Kershaw would be so outrageous that it would make everyone in baseball say “holy shit, the Dodgers just raped (team X).”

It will be a while for this bankruptcy to play out, and the owner is in no hurry
to divest himself of his best assets.
A move to rebuild would have to be a sign from McCourt that he’s willing to undo everything he’s done.

Well, we could turn this into a really fun hypothetical thread and ask everyone who they would be willing
to blow up the farm to acquire. As deep as the farm system is, this trade could blow it up.
Dan Haren netted Brett Anderson, Chris Carter, Carlos Gonzalez (a piece of the Matt Holliday trade), Greg Smith, Dana Evelend.
Why the Dodgers would trade him is beyond me, but I would guess you need upside at nearly every level to beat the market for him, especially this year.
Holland or Harrison (ML ready), Perez (AAA), Wieland (AA), Profar (A) seems stout, but even that might be light this year.
Maybe you could keep Profar and give a couple other A-level guys.
Rock the J2, JD!
I don't see how that trade happens without Profar.
Shooting totally in the dark, I think the Dodgers would want something like Perez, Erlin, Profar, Olt, and two of something like Jackson and Buckel.

Probably not, and I agree they would want players closer to contributing, because
he has to keep them as a good draw on TV. They’re already gonna lose Matt Kemp.
Has to be a good amount of ML-ready talent along with high upside farm talent.
Throw Holland into that trade and it’s gotta be close.
With no other pitchers on the market, there could be no end to the bidding, except the July 31 deadline.
Rock the J2, JD!
I think they'll keep Erlin in AA until he shows a better capability to avoid HRs.
It might not take him long into next season to do that.
Yeah, Perez it seems will likely be in AAA to start next season. So, maybe, Frisco is Erlin, Loux, Wieland, Grimm, MDLS.
Hopefully, Font will be back in the mix at MB.
Rock the J2, JD!
Arkansas isn't exactly a team with a lot of pop.
They have the fewest HR in the Texas League.
He’s improving, I agree. It’s hard to believe he’ll surpass his MB innings in his next Frisco start.
Still. AAA is as much for stashing quick call ups as it is for prospect development. I don’t see mErlin being on their list of early season call ups next year, though he’s certainly on pace for a September 2012 cup of coffee.
Rock the J2, JD!

Despite how things have gone so far this year,
these things have a way of working themselves out quite quickly. Realistically, the Rangers should go into each season with 7-8 options ready to pitch throughout the course of the year.

The more I look at what Perez has done this year, the more sense that makes.
He’s near the top in FIP (7th for pitchers with more than 50 IP) and got there by vastly improving on his H/9 and HR. Folks around here still bitch about his inconsistency and walks, but he’s improved in those two areas this year, even if he isn’t the present Ace we all want him to be.
He’s deserving of a reward and a new challenge and some work with Terry Clark.
Rock the J2, JD!
I don't disagree.
I just want for people to realize that a realistic time table for him involves not seeing him with the Rangers until 2013. He may show up next year, but we shouldn’t expect/count on it.

I think the worst is with Profar.
If you carefully look at what Parks has been saying about him, it’s that he’s a very polished player who is mature for his age and would be able to handle a more advanced assignment now/soon.
I feel like this is getting mixed in with Profar’s numbers to create more helium for Profar than is warranted. At some point, Profar will likely be considered a Top 10 talent and people will assume that means he can be the next Alex Rodriguez or some such all based on the assumption that a very young player performing well at a relatively high level means that the ceiling is truly outrageous.

I trust what Parks says completely about the people that he has seen.
With Profar, Parks hasn’t seen him (outside of the two Futures Game ABs) to the point that I give him the deference I normally would.
The people who have seen him, though, paint a very different picture of his potential. A picture that has basically exploded this season as Profar has. And I’m not one of the ones that thinks “ceilings” for prospects don’t change— I have no idea how Profar’s ceiling hasn’t gone up over the course of this year.

That's a good point,
but I still think we need to be wary of the idea that one of the things that’s making Profar so good right now (his in game awareness) is hard to project a ceiling for. It means that he will likely get the most out of his tools, but we aren’t talking about the tools of Hanley Ramirez.

Certainly not.
That needs to be said again— Profar is not the second-coming of Hanley Ramirez (or at least, he’s almost certainly not; I’m not a scout).

Profar to AA this year
That’s just nuts. It would shock me if this happened. Profar to AA at this time next year? maybe, but we shouldn’t expect it.
I think with the inebriation, comes a lack of faith as well. Talking about guys like Martin perez as a borderline bust or guys like Roman mendez having a mediocre year so far and thus not looking at him as anything but another Carlos Melo. Loux not being in the same class as Erlin. Mendonca striking out too much to be worth anything, etc etc
I sometimes get wrapped up in the hysteria too, but the steps up that some of these players are making are crazy (NeRa, Wieland, Profar, Odor) and shouldn’t be expected for every prospect in the system
What's the rumpus?
Profar probably starts next season at AA.

So what happens
if he doesn’t? Will you be down on him for not meeting your expectation? Will he become less of a prospect in your eyes because of this? This is what I’m seeing happen with Martin Perez and it’s funny/sad
What's the rumpus?
No. That's a strange series of questions.
I don’t base my view of our prospects entirely on where they play. I read whatever I can find about them, watch whatever I can, and trust our organization to know what is best.

I wouldn't expect it from you
but many out there see a prospect’s status diminish if they don’t matriculate up the ladder as quickly as another prospect or as they’d like or hoped.
Marteen is a good example. He got stuck at AA to figure things out which is no knock on a 20 year old, but some think because he’s not in line for a call up now, he’s less of a prospect.

The waves of talent is what gets me excited
2009 – 2010 was exciting because we saw so many players promoted, but on the inverse of that, the minors were laid a little bare. 2010 was a pretty slow year on the minors front with only a few players stepping up but more taking a step back or just getting traded.
But unless we have a massive graduation next year (Schepp, MPerez, Leonys, NeRa) the minors will continue to produce excitement at every level. And at every level I mean all 6 levels. Mind boggling when before we were fortunate to see Hurley+Whittleman+Lemon in the same game
What's the rumpus?
I was just thinking the other day how when Danks was drafted, he immediately went near the top of the prospect rankings.
There’s almost no aspect of the organization that isn’t worth being excited about right now.
The farm system has exciting players at every level, and a new crop of awesome signed on the International FA market (ok, I feel a little tinge of dimming effect from the draft, though I’m warming to Matthews over Daniel Norris).
We get reports from Cole and Parks.

And if we had a team like we had 3-4 years ago
Neil Ramirez and Martin Perez would have been up already just because there would’ve been a real need for them. But we have the luxury to let them develop more.
And when TB has 5 good starters in their rotation they can afford to leave the prospects marinate on the farm. But Moore out of the bullpen next year with that arsenal would be pretty sick
What's the rumpus?

I'm listening to the West Virgina power radio feed for the Hickory game
Their announcer just went on about how why he thinks Savannah has such a low team ERA and said he thinks there’s some scoring adjustments going on when they play on their home field. He then went on to say he’s not trying to suggest collusion…..he’s coming out and directly saying it is happening. It was awkward to hear his tangent.

I remember scouting reports that his plate discipline wasn't an issue, because he was fast enough
that bad contact could still get him on base, and he had decent enough bat control to hit what was thrown.

Does anyone know anything about Jose Mavare?
Other than he’s 6’0", 175 and has a tremendous K rate. I know he’s 21 and pitching in a rookie league, but I can’t get past that K rate. It seems like he should finish the year in Spokane, at which point we’ll have a better gauge on his prospect status.
Also, the AAA staff lost Delcarman, McClung and Feldman over the AS break. Can we expect some promotions soon? Fingers crossed for Perez and Flores moving to RR and Loux moving to Frisco.

yeah, that’s what I was thinking. A single plus offspeed pitch can help a pitcher put up cartoon numbers through pretty high levels in the minors.
See: Ramirez, Edwar.

Mavare is a zone-pounder, with a heavy upper 80s/low 90s FB and a good 11/5 curve with some bite. You can put up good numbers in the AZL if you throw strikes, and Mavare can locate his arsenal. Nothing special.

He’s not a loogy, but he’s a lefty and he’s still only 24. And as mentioned above, you takek out his 30+ ERA in 2.2 day game innings and he’s put up some pretty decent numbers this year.

Although some team would have to give up a 40 spot for him but he does have another option left after this season so you could get up to 18 months of him in your system before having to make a decision on whether to keep him or not

you have to imagine some of that power is just growing into him too. He could really blow up next year.

Buckel has still only given up one hit. Also Weiland is having his struggles in AA, I hope he can do what he’s done at every level previous and figure it out after ten or so starts.

might play up as a reliever. Definitely seems like the type of struggling minor league starter who could profile pretty well as a RP>

During their BA Top 50 podcast, they said they could easily see Profar as a guy who moves into the top 5 prospects in baseball either this offseason or by the time they do their midseason top 50 next year.
That's what we call a ceiling being moved.

"do you a jet ski rental place would work here" - Mike E, 5/10/2011, in response to me saying I would rather face the Thunder than the Grizzlies in the WCF.
Some other comments towards the end
- Mazara and Guzman would slot in Rangers top 10 at the back, maybe 8-11…kind of off the cuff remark, not sure how much thought was put into it.
*Said Profar’s leap, Martin, Mazara, and Guzman signings, and the MB opening day rotation drive the rangers climb to the #1 system.
*Talked about how a lot of Organizations would have Mazara or Guzman into their top 5. Said it speaks to how strong the Rangers system is currently.
Very interesting.
You should post this in the GDT.

Fastball lost vela late in the inning but worked low-90s mostly and bumped 94. Just no command today. First 21 pitches were fastballs.
AZL Rangers are explosive. Leading 10-0 through 3
Sardinas 2-2, BB, SB(2)
Akins: 1-2, SB(6)
Urbanus: 2-3 He’s quietly having a good debut season.
Dat Sardinas.

He's fun to watch
He has wheels. That entire AZL outfield is a relay team waiting to happen. Super athletes.
Has anything changed in your view of Sardinas this year?
Where do you have his ceiling as of right now?

Basically the same as last season
It’s hard to evaluate him at the plate because of the shoulder. He’s only batting RH at this point, and as a switch-hitter he doesn’t have much experience with the RH/RH matchup. On defense, he looks good, with the purest actions at the position in the system, and a very strong arm (although the mechs aren’t always fluid or fundamental). He’s added a little mass to his lanky frame, but he has a long way to go in that department. His speed is gaining more consistency, as his clocks are routinely in the 70 grade range from the RH.
He’s a true Venezuelan shortstop with plus-plus speed and contact ability with the bat. Despite the injury setback, Sardinas’s ceiling remains quite high. Long way off.
JC
sitting through an dreadful short season game: 15 runs, 12 walks thru 5. Ugh.
holy balls
that sucks, I dont know if you could pay me to sit through that.

Profar from Badler's Chat today
Jake (Atlanta): Could you see the Braves sending a starter to Texas in a deal for Profar? I’m sure it couldn’t be done for Lowe, more like Jurrjens probably, but with Profar being blocked by Andrus and the Braves needing an SS of the future it seems possible.
Ben Badler: I think there’s a 0.0000144% chance the Rangers ever trade Profar.
More
Joseph (Dallas, TX): Cuthbert is a stud, but Profar has still got to be the best prospect out of the 09 class, right?
Ben Badler: That ‘09 class is shaping up to be a very good one, but I’ll take Profar over any of them.
Martin
Eric (Chicago): Who is the better centerfield prospect, Leonys Martin or Brett Jackson? Do they both have starting jobs early next season?
Ben Badler: Like them both, but Martin is better. Forget next year—he could be on the Rangers’ postseason roster this year.
This year, sure
But post-season roster, do you go with the youth of Martin or the experience of Endy (supposing he isn’t dealt)? And what do you do with Murphy? Is it possible that Mr. Grit doesn’t make the post-season roster?
And yes I realize it’s way too early to talk about the post-season roster….
What's the rumpus?
I don't think it's too early at all
I think Martin helps us, and I think there’s a decent chance NeRa is in our bullpen.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
NeRa is in our bullpen
maybe next year
I know you're still struggling to find your way in LSB but you'd probably feel more comfortable in one of the other threads that talks about
weather, fashion, video games, uniform colors, etc. . - Josey Wales 5/18/11
Perez
EricJ (SF): You guys are a lot higher on Martin Perez than most other places. What do you see?
Ben Badler: A 20-year-old lefty just moved to Triple-A who carved up Double-A hitters with a clean delivery, the ability to throw strikes, miss bats and get ground balls with a plus fastball, at least a plus changeup and a 50-to-60 grade curveball.
carved up
that seems a slightly generous way to put it, but yeah.

I don't know. His only weakness was a not-sterling BB/9. He ranked top 10 in K/9 and HR/9 and
he lowered his hits substantially this year.
I think folks don’t realize it’s a hitter-friendly league, and his numbers ranked really high, even if he wasn’t top in any particular category.
Rock the J2, JD!
he's done well
but he’s not flat out dominant.

Profar, Andrus, Sardinas, and Odor
EQVLPVEQVLP (Taiwan): Higher ceiling. Jurickson Profar, Luis Sardinas, Rougned Odor or Andrus?
Ben Badler: Profar. He has a chance to be a better hitter than Andrus. But man, I really like all four of them. That’s ridiculous.
I knew there was a reason I loved Ben Badler.
Other than that he’s a total badass.

Anybody know why Hankins replaced NeRa in the 2nd inning just now?
wasn’t listening – 47 pitches thru 1.2 IP
The trainer came out and looked at him.
They didn’t give a reason though. They made it sound like it was precautionary.
Don't know how they got there yet, but Hickory is up 2-0
6th batter is up against Taillon. Said he just hit 98 MPH
Profar double most importantly.
Eat shit Jameson.
Profar Sac bunt in 2nd AB
2B in 3rd AB. Over the head of Rojas, Profar thrown out trying to take 3rd.
woah, it's the Indian pitcher, Rinku Singh
He was one of the two guys that won the “Million dollar arm” contest in India a few years back. If I recall correctly, the other guy that came with him was released by the Pirates.
Here's how they did it
Hickory Top of the 1st
Jurickson Profar doubles (22) on a line drive to left fielder Rogelio Noris. Jurickson Profar advances to 3rd, on fielding error by left fielder Rogelio Noris.
Teodoro Martinez walks.
Andrew Clark strikes out swinging. Jurickson Profar steals (12) home. Teodoro Martinez to 2nd. Teodoro Martinez steals (18) 2nd base.
Joshua Richmond singles on a line drive to left fielder Rogelio Noris. Teodoro Martinez to 3rd.
Christian Villanueva doubles (22) on a fly ball to left fielder Rogelio Noris. Teodoro Martinez scores. Joshua Richmond to 3rd.
Jacob Skole grounds out, second baseman Kevin Mort to first baseman Cole White. Joshua Richmond scores. Christian Villanueva to 3rd.
Kellin Deglan called out on strikes.

The Rangers named Tepesch their pitcher of the month today. He was 88-92 mph early but is sitting low-90s lately and hitting up to 96 mph.
Martin threw another guy out, this time at 2B and also is now 1-3
he seems to have alot of OF assists this year.

AAA RHP Neil Ramirez felt tightness in his shoulder today and was removed after 1 2/3 innings. He is listed as day-to-day. #rangers
Damn....Profar came up with a chance to win the game...2 outs, bottom of the 9th
Swings at first pitch…deep fly ball. Justin Howard is back on the warning track….he jumps….he makes the freaking catch. So close
A lot of ground balls for Leonys upon his move up to AAA.
