Nowhere really

I can’t really afford a trip right now. My company instituted a fraud prevention policy this year that requires you to take at least five consecutive days of vacation. With it being so damn hot outside, I figured it’s a pretty good time to just sit at the house in the air conditioning and play video games.

I might go to Tyler and visit my parents, or go see a movie, but that’s really about the extent of actually doing anything.

Fraud prevention policy means mandatory vacation?

I wouldn’t complain, but I don’t get it.

"In fact, most of these free-swinging Padres couldn’t hit Dock’s funky palm ball. I threw it often. But by then, also, the first acid distractions entered: the TV flickered; the cracks in the wall started to move; the hand soap started to breathe — those sorts of things. Plus I was drawn to the outdoor garden between innings. Rain was near, I sensed." - A.J. Daulerio

Yeah, I had to ask about it too

The idea is that someone is forced to do your job for a week, so they’ll be able to tell if you’re really working or not. It’s kind of pointless in my role, since I’m a developer.

Baseball dates

1984 – In a 5 – 4 win over the Pirates, Expo Pete Rose singles for the 3,052nd time tying him with Ty Cobb on the all-time career single list.

1992 – (typo, perhaps?) – Nolan Ryan strikes out his 100th batter, reaching that mark for a record 23rd year in a row. He subdues the Orioles, 6 – 2, and passes Phil Niekro as number 12 on the all-time win list with 319. Juan Gonzalez helps with a 450-foot homer to center field, the longest yet at Camden Yards.

1998 – Boston defeats Toronto by a score of 6 – 3. Jose Canseco’s 8th-inning home run accounts for the Blue Jays’ first run. It is the 380th home run of Canseco’s career, making him the all-time leader among players born outside of the United States. Orlando Cepeda and Tony Perez had been the co-leaders with 379.

With his 44th homer, Mark McGwire surpasses Johnny Mize as the all-time Cardinal single-season home run leader.

2002 – Carl Everett becomes the first Ranger to hit two home runs in one inning. The Texas designated hitter homers twice in the nine-run seventh inning during the 12 – 4 rout of visiting Oakland.

2010 – Joe Mauer goes 5 for 5 and drives in 7 runs as the Twins rout Zack Greinke and the Royals, 19 – 1. Danny Valencia also has a night to remember, going 4 for 4 and hitting a grand slam for his first major league homer. (Ha!)

Birthdays!

1922 – Hoyt Wilhelm, pitcher; All-Star, Hall of Famer (d. 2002)
1977 – Joaquin Benoit, pitcher
1980 – Jason Botts, outfielder

cross posting this from the NFL thread

but i am interested in starting up a LSB fantasy football league — on ESPN (sorry jonthefon)

the only question is a) are there enough players who will be active and b) are we going to play team D or individual defensive players (IDP)

i am a fan of IDP but if that is going to keep people from being interested…

From Matches:
Michael Young, a man now sitting at .333/.369/.494 (.374 wOBA; 135 wRC+) on the season, is currently the best qualifying hitter in the AL West.

A hot “streak” has taken MY from just kind of surpassing okay for a DH in to hitting well enough to be awesome even at a position with no defensive demands.

make sure you are using a strong password.

numbers and symbols if possible. I would also update my security questions, and make sure they are not easy to guess. I’m not sure if Yahoo offers two-stage authentication, but If they do I would use it. You may check your sent mail and make sure nothing was sent out.

I would also run a good virus scan on my computer; just to be safe.

It's homemade mayonaise with a ton of lemon juice.

Homemade mayo: one egg, one teaspoon of dijon mustard and a pint of Olive Oil. That’s the only amounts I know, so it makes a ton of mayo.

Mix the egg and mustard, then add a drop of the oil one at a time with whisking briskly. Once it starts to thicken, add the oil is a steady stream, while whisking. Don’t stop or it will separate. Add lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste (this is a cooking mayo, and not exactly Helmann’s…so don’t expect the same).

Take that and add enough lemon juice to make it very zesty — perhaps too zesty. The acidic juices in the sauce work perfectly with the asparagus and the fish.

May I suggest a delicious piece of Alaskan halibut next time?

I was a bit limited in my selection.

I didn’t go to the market I normally do, and the sea bass was the only white fish they had. I wanted to get halibut or haddock.

So a friend of mine was stood up recently

(I hope none of you live in Atlanta and are the offender because she’s super cute and awesome.)

She was supposed to meet him at this great restaurant, and she was running a little late. So she called him to let him know she was late, he didn’t answer. When she got inside, she texted to let him know she was at the bar. She waited 15 minutes, and he never showed.

It worked out for her though. She wasn’t about to waste all the precious prep time. She took herself to a nearby bar, got a whiskey and ended up meeting another guy.

Cool story, bro. But seriously, why do people do this? If you change your mind about a date, a phone call or a text is not that difficult.

Hitting snooze every ten minutes for an hour wasn’t the most restful way to wake up, so now I’m trying a “I’ll sleep until I wake up and look at my clock and it’s about time to get out of bed” approach. I feel more rested, but I’m also getting in to work consistently about an hour later.

Much better percentage in just soldiering on. If he helps Walter, and Walter loses, he’s dead. If he doesn’t help Walter, and Walter wins, he’s probably still alive.

I think the ass beating was him seeing through Walter every step of the way, and being fed up with Walt trying to play him. Of course, he’s also pretty pissed that Walt made him and Victor look bad.

How do you think Gus knew Walt was outside? I’m guessing they have a GPS tracker on his car.

I’d still probably take Orton, unless I’m rebuilding and not going to be that good this year or next.

Kolb is so much hype to me.

Orton at least has a decent track record to fall back on.

I alwys considered it part of the trinity of a car

If the battery goes out, the alternator is probably next because it was either working overtime trying to keep a bad battery charged, or it was the problem to begin with. Then the starter goes out because it wasn’t getting enough juice from the battery and was wearing it down.

It's basically the same principle, though

Just different materials are better at different things.

Anger logic's so great I kinda forget what we saw in regular logic in the first place.

by colonialbob on Jul 26, 2011 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Same principle

but we are talking about how long they last and when they die. That’s going to vary immensely based on type of battery. Hell, that will vary depending on the casing of the battery.

by ab03 on Jul 26, 2011 10:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Ok

and the answer is that there are less free ions. So to then compare different batteries doesn’t tell you anything since that degradation varies.

But the real reason I said that is if it is just the natural reason that a battery dies, as opposed to some specific mechanical flaw, then it shouldn’t die that quickly

by ab03 on Jul 26, 2011 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, depends on how you use it, climate, etc.

If you make a lot of short trips in Texas during the summer, your battery will die faster than if you drive long distances in a more mild climate.

Not long ago, someone here (maybe KOK) talked about remembering dreams

Here’s an interesting study on the subject

Dreams seem to help us process emotions by encoding and constructing memories of them. What we see and experience in our dreams might not necessarily be real, but the emotions attached to these experiences certainly are. Our dream stories essentially try to strip the emotion out of a certain experience by creating a memory of it. This way, the emotion itself is no longer active. This mechanism fulfils an important role because when we don’t process our emotions, especially negative ones, this increases personal worry and anxiety. In fact, severe REM sleep-deprivation is increasingly correlated to the development of mental disorders. In short, dreams help regulate traffic on that fragile bridge which connects our experiences with our emotions and memories.

This is such a tough one.

Gun to head: Mediterranean Tour. Start in Spain, see Sardinia, Sicily (I’ve done Italy a couple times), Greece and Isles, Malta, Turkey, and Israel. North Africa would have to wait because that’s like 2 months right there.

Second choice: NZ/Australia

Third: Probably the baseball stadium trip

Honorable mentions: Prague, Dublin, Chile/Argentina, Philippines.

I feel like I completely neglect Asia, and it’s not that I don’t want to go, it’s just I have a lot of other priorities right now.

quick question: are you going to wedgefest?

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

No.

Plus, we need to use a babysitter for the Tailgate on the 24th and don’t want to abuse the free babysitting I get from my parents by doing it twice in one month. We may swing down on the way to the CF play area, but I don’t want to bring a 4 and 2 yr old to the wedge for the whole game probably just as much as y’all wouldn’t want them there.

Cowboys have cut:

Roy Williams, Marion Barber, Leonard Davis, and Kris Brown.

They must be expecting a HUGE haul in free agency. Obviously Barber was expendable, as was the kicker, but how can you possibly cut from the O-line? It was already thin enough, and you just cut one of the more reliable starters.

South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus was arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with nuisance conduct, according to a report by The State Newspaper.

According to the police report, two officers saw Mangus “facing Main St. urinating on the street curb and roadway,” at 1:31 a.m. Tuesday. The report stated that another officer was called to the scene and when he approached Mangus, he was “unsteady on his feet and he had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person.”

The problem is going to be how much of my college credits transfer over from the Navy.

When I was in, I could have received an Associates in Applied Electrical Sciences with just three classes (electives) from an online school.

It’s looking like not much of that is going to transfer at all.

get your SMART transcript

from the navy. I got a lot of credit for my bootcamp and MOS school and it wasn’t technical at all. You may have more luck transferring it to a JUCO though.

by BHill on Jul 26, 2011 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm in the middle of that process right now.

A few years back, if I had gone on to online college, I was just 12 credits from my associates with my SMART transcript in Applied Electrical Sciences.

But I’m not trying to get a technical degree; I’m looking for a management degree so I can move on into project management, that sort of thing.

I’m just wondering how much of that technical training will carry over.
