The headline on Fox Sports article is "All in". I assume that means Rosenthal expects the Rangers to land at least a couple of their targets. And then he closes with this: "The Rangers rarely are included in discussions of the sport's super-powers. But that won't be the case much longer."

Simpson's wealth came largely in the form of stock, I believe.

And I’m pretty sure he’s still the CEO of XTO Energy. Almost positive, actually.

Just as an aside— of the two people, ARod and Bob Simpson, who do you think made more last year in pure salary according to Forbes?

It was a bad question.

I was trying to phrase it in such a way that Simpson came out ahead, but it’s probably not true with ARod’s endorsements.

Forbes has Simpson’s “total compensation” for last year at $32.19 million.

I have no idea.

I was just looking around for basic information on the XTO sale and came across Simpson’s Forbes profile.

I would think those types of items would push Simpson far above A-Rod, even when figuring in the endorsements.

For some reason I think Simpson was the one who started his business, paid himself nothing for years, but then became a whipping boy later when his company was giving him an ungodly salary.

I don't think Elvis is in the right spot in his lineup.

Ian Kinsler, 2B
Elvis Andrus, SS
Josh Hamilton, LF
Beltran, CF
Adrian Beltre, 3B
Michael Young, DH
Nelson Cruz, RF
Mike Napoli, C
Mitch Moreland, 1B

Seems like you would want Elvis in the 8th or 9th spot. I understand all the greatness of his bunting and base stealing, but I just don’t see how it makes up for Beltran’s much higher OBP. And, Beltran would be in LF, as we all know around here.

But, yeah, I love that lineup, especially for October.

Another blurb out there this morning that has me excited:

An executive from a team that has expressed interest in Beltran told Joel Sherman of the New York Post, “They are not getting a top-40-ranked prospect for Beltran even if they eat all the money [left on his contract].” Sherman’s article goes on to explain why the Mets will probably have to settle for less-than-elite prospects.

That specific conversation about LA players

Was more about ranking them because of money against guys in the draft, not necessarily against each other. I have problems ranking them against each other, too, but you’re oversimplifying the point I was making in that argument. Draft positions I’m more comfortable with, though that has obvious flaws, too.

My problem with the grade ranking system is that it is used in too small a scale. If you really wanted to convey information, you’d go beyond the grades you typically see in Sickels’ system. He ranks almost everyone as an A, B, C, or D with minuses thrown in. I think there are probably many more levels than that.

I'm just teasing, really.

I like the Sickels scale because I generally think of guys in terms of tiers. Within each tier there are guys who are better or worse (+’s and -’s), but really I think it is okay to think about As, Bs, and Cs.

I think Perez, Profar, and Martin are the A’s
I think Erlin down through Loux, LuJack, and Alfaro are the B’s
and I think Ross and below are the C’s. The Rangers have a lot of guys in the B-/C+ range…

You get a lot of Cs, fewer Bs, and not many As. Works for me.

I don't think it is a great package by any means

that is one of those deals where there is a decent chance that not one guy ever makes it to the majors. Teams don’t usually make that type of deal.

That said, Sandy is pretty bright, and may recognize that stocking up on high ceiling talent is the way to go, and he’s only getting high ceiling stuff if he goes with guys way out there.

by GhettoBear04 on Jul 26, 2011 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually

now that I did the individual per year calculations, I guess you can say that by going back to 2006, he is helping out the WAR calculation a lot (2008 and 2009, he is a 2.5 extrapolated over a full season). That’s obviously a lot worse than 3.7

But that sample size argument works both ways. How are people so convinced that Chavez “sucks” when there just isn’t a great sample over the last 5 years to determine anything definitively. I guess I am confident in saying that he’s not going to continue his torrid pace but I also don’t know that I should expect him to regress to the 2.0 WAR player (over a season) that everyone expects him to be.

by ab03 on Jul 26, 2011 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions

And actually

never mind. The main issue seems to be from using WAR instead of just looking at his offensive numbers, which does show a definitive track record of being below average.

I don't know about predictingthe rest of the season offensive production from those guys

by MikeEl on Jul 26, 2011 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow, agreed!

I love seeing Hamilton in left field, Cruz in right, and I don’t think that is the lineup if Beltran is acquired. I suspect it would be Hamilton in Center, Cruz in left and Beltran in right, and that seems like an out of position outfield.

The lineup isn't better with Beltran?

So you think Chavez/Gentry >= Beltran?

really?

by Dirk Diggler on Jul 26, 2011 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the thing people are missing is that if we acquired Beltran, it most likely wouldn't be a move made to help solidify the division this year.

So the likelihood of a Cruz-Hamilton-Beltran outfield day-in and day-out during the regular season is not high.

It’s the same response to the “we don’t need to upgrade our OF, look at how well Gentry and Chavez are doing!”

This move wouldn’t be made for the regular season, it would be made for the postseason with 5 and 7-game series in mind. In that situation, the likelihood of a defensive dropoff would probably be outweighed by the offensive improvement from that alignment.

But where does Beltran play during the regular season?

Unless the Rangers are extra cautious with this Beltre injury and keep him out until September I don’t see how you would fit both Beltran and Young into the lineup on a consistent basis. Unless that means Moreland gets bumped to a more bench type role and Young plays 1B more often which I could see happening given how Mitch has performed the last 6 weeks or so.

by bigsteve on Jul 26, 2011 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

It just means Hamilton plays more CF probably

a combo of Gentry/Chavez/Moreland lose their playing time

by Dirk Diggler on Jul 26, 2011 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

OK

But Aqua said

So the likelihood of a Cruz-Hamilton-Beltran outfield day-in and day-out during the regular season is not high.

Which is why I ask where would he play?

I guess you could go with hamilton in CF 2 days a week with Beltran in LF. Beltran DH 2 days a week with Young at 1B. And then Beltran can give Hamilton and Cruz a day off every other week which would give everyone sufficient playing time just a lot of moving parts

Once in the playoffs I agree that we will see Beltran/Hammy/Cruz as our every game OF as we should.

by bigsteve on Jul 26, 2011 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions

The big losers, probably, would be Chavez/Gentry and Mitch Moreland.

I suspect you’d see Beltran play 6 out of 7 games in RF with Cruz and Hamilton rotating through the DH spot liberally. That means more Michael Young at 1B at Mitch Moreland’s expense.

On the days where Hamilton plays LF and Cruz DH’s, Chavez/Gentry plays CF. The same with days where Hamilton DH’s.

With such limited playing time, you'd have to think it would be just one.

And the platoon would be taken into consideration.

I highly doubt that the Rangers would jettison Chavez with the tear he’s been on, but I’d probably keep Gentry because he’s more flexible as a pinch runner, defensive substitution, and he’s right-handed.

So our choice is… trade him this off season… sign him for long term money… let him go and collect the picks [and his value for 2012].

Picking up Rasmus for the playoff run in 2011 and having a viable option for the future would make it far more palatable to try and flip Hamilton in the off season.

Depends on what his 2012 looks like.

But if he has a healthy 2012 with Hamilton level numbers… He’ll get at least 5… and possibly 6.

Hamilton will be older

And Werth didn’t have anywhere near the injury history (or the personal history) that Josh has had

Both he and his agent have to know that is going to have some effect on his FA negotiations the question is if there is some team who is willing to throw a big number of guaranteed years at him he will likely take it

by bigsteve on Jul 26, 2011 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Hamilton will be 31 when his contract expires.

Werth was 31 when he signed his deal this winter. Werth turned 32 in May.

Werth doesn’t quite have Hamilton’s history… but he’s not exactly Cal Ripken either.

If Werth can get 7 years… Hamilton will want 5-6 at least.

by Brad on Jul 26, 2011 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmm I thought Hamilton would be 32....my bad

And I agree hamilton will want 5-6 years and if some teams offers him that then its going to suck seeing him leave.

But I don’t think any team is going to offer that. I think his offers will all come with options attached to his health.

I dont think relapse is the thing thats going to worry teams

Its his injury history and the fact he cant be counted on to play a full season.

I wouldn’t guarantee any more than 3-4 years for him. I would include several option years that vested based on PAs and make those numbers relatively easy to obtain.

If some team goes out and guarantees Josh 6 or 7 years then hes gone and I will applaud the FO for not giving in to the pressure to match that kind of offer.

Do a 3 or 4 year guarantee deal with options and I think Josh and the Rangers would be all over that

You're probably right

Or you could make the PA clause fairly obtainable even if he does go on the Dl for a limited period of time. Something like 450 or 500 PA’s. Something where he would have to have a serious injury to not have the option vest which is really what you want to be concerned about as a club signing Hamilton. I think he could come close to justifying a big deal even if he only plays 75% of the time.

Not to be defensive… just that in practice you and LSJ are VERY VERY different. The thought of LSJ in a career providing for a wife and child…. that is not LSJ. It was sort of a chuckle comparison because you do dislike him and you are different.

Obviously the comparison between me [a fan] and Josh [someone I don’t know and only see a certain view of based on the media, etc] is VERY VERY different than the years of interaction of you and LSJ.

The point of me bringing up my irrational mild dislike of Josh Hamilton is that I’m acknowledging that it probably colors my opinions of what the Rangers should do with him long term.

I suspect

he has very good value as trade bait. Polished CFer who is a top 50 prospect as well. Im torn between pursuing Rasmus or Beltran. Of course it all depends on the price.

they always have solid depth

but their two premium type guys were Kelly and Rizzo, and they already dealt them to SD (and they weren’t exactly premium). Renauldo is good, but I can’t imagine that the Rockies would want a package built around him

The real advantage Texas has that these other teams don’t is that if it came to it, they could give Colorado a legit major league starter in either Harry or Holland. What major league players do the Reds, Yankees, or Red Sox have to spare?

I guess my argument

is that even your suggestion yesterday: Holland, Davis, Erlin, NeRa – is probably better than any of those teams can put together. Holland is almost certainly preferable to Nova. I guess the Yankees COULD put Banuelos and Montero in the deal, but that just doesn’t seem likely.

Basically, I think the Rangers could probably beat anyone’s deal and still keep their top trinity in tact if they wanted to. Now, Texas may prefer to deal Perez than both NeRa and Erlin. Who knows. But you can’t just look at the pitcher and the Rangers system alone – you also have to look at what other interested parties could put together.

Fun

I think I’d rank them Bell>Nunez>Uehara>Bailey, factoring in expected cost. I’m not as wary of Bell as the conventional wisdom seems to be, and I also don’t think he’ll end up being as expensive as has been discussed (because of that conventional wisdom, and because it doesn’t seem like the market for him got as heated as the Beltran market did).

Nunez I think will cost more, and I’d just as soon worry just about this year. Uehara… meh. As for Bailey, he has too much of an injury history for me to commit anything substantial for him. If he cost the same as Bell, then sure. But he won’t, so give me Bell.

I'm curious how Uehara has such a crazy K/9

despite a fastball with such mediocre velo.

My concern with Nunez is how much the Marlins will ask for him.

by GhettoBear04 on Jul 26, 2011 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, I'd agree with both

Sometimes with these relievers you have to wonder about peripherals. If Philkid was around, he could spit out the number of innings it takes for k/9 to stabilize, but I can imagine that it is way more than the number of innings we’ve seen from these guys. While you’d rather it to err on the high side, sometimes you have to use some common sense – Heath Bell is just better than Uehara…

My point

Was that if Werth can get 7 years guaranteed going into his age 32 year… why would Hamilton settle for 3 guaranteed years with vesting options?

Obviously Hamilton is better.

by Brad on Jul 26, 2011 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

A lengthy injury history on top of a pretty highly publicized personal history

He likely wont have to settle for only 3 years guaranteed because some team, like the Nats with Werth, will swoop in and make a stupid offer. But I, if I were the GM, wouldn’t be comfortable going more than 3-4 guaranteed years

by bigsteve on Jul 26, 2011 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

That's reasonable.

And $40m less than he got.

Hamilton’s agent will make sure he gets over 100m guaranteed. The MLBPA would pressure the shit out of him too.

by Brad on Jul 26, 2011 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I think for Hamilton my max comfort level would be roughly 4/92-96

Maybe 4/100

But then add on a couple of option years with pretty easily obtainable goals that basically protect the club in case of severe injury. He can have small injuries and still make his goal but if he was to be injured for like a full season or something it would allow the club to cut ties

Ok

still not sure what their Venezuelan presence is but I actually think I remember them having a decent LA program.

That would be the one reason you would devote more to the draft than LA. Maybe you also don’t want to spend time convincing guys to come play for you instead of Boston and would rather get money talent in the draft

by ab03 on Jul 26, 2011 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I think LA is more complicated than just throwing a dollar figure at a guy and he signs with you

The relationships the handlers have with clubs and stuff like that. The Pirates may not have the resources allocatted to LA to start to build those relationships and so they may not have even had a chance at guys like Mazara and co.

by bigsteve on Jul 26, 2011 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Obviously I cannot know for sure, but I would be willing to bet that with very few exceptions

The team that offers the most money “wins” the prospect in LA. That may not be true for guys like Profar, who wanted something other than money (the chance to play SS) or guys with clearly-established relationships with a certain team.

However, without having details to the contrary, I think if the Pirates rolled into the LA market with $9 million, they could walk away with guys like Guzman and Mazara.

That’s not to say they could have definitely done it with Guzman and Mazara this year, but the point remains that it is ridiculously stupid to pay that kind of money to Josh Bell when there are so many other outlets through which you can acquire comparable talent.

"Comparable talent"

I was guilty of this the other way but the fact is that we probably cannot say for sure if Josh Bell is comparable to Guzman and Mazara combined. Bell is at least further along so at least he has that going for him.

by ab03 on Jul 26, 2011 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions

You're certainly right, and that could be an issue here.

Maybe the Pirates just fucking love them some Josh Bell.

I don’t know how you can love him enough to spend $9 million, though.

9M seems pretty high

Just because of the historical context of very few draftees ever getting that kind of deal and Bell not being considered a top 5 talent by anybody.

But in terms of relative value, I don’t think we know enough about any of these guys to know if this is a good deal.

If I were to eyeball percentages of reaching the majors, etc., I would think the best use of 9M would be to go get somebody good in FA.

No, it wouldn't.

The value of the contract would still be far above slot guidelines for that pick, and MLB would take very keen interest in how the Kx was formulated.

And the rest of the 9 million figure was his base salaries for the first few years of his ML contract?

by bigsteve on Jul 26, 2011 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

1.5 million is still well above the slot price for the first pick in the second round.

So the same thing happens.

And I would be shocked if MLB didn’t look very closely at ML contracts given to draftees regardless of their bonuses and slots.

But 1.5 million wouldn't nearly send up the red flags that a straight 9 million dollar bonus would

And I doubt MLB looks that closely at who gets ML contracts. Thats on the clubs. They only have a certain amount they can have at one time and if they want to throw those around to 18 year old 2nd round draftees thats on them.

Im sure they give it their due diligence but I don’t think there would be any extra scrutiny attached.

The kid was a 1st round talent that fell to the 2nd round due to bonus demands and if the Pirates did in fact give him a ML deal totalling 9 million I don’t see any need for extra scrutiny

by bigsteve on Jul 26, 2011 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

we know that every (significantly) overslot signing is accompanied by a letter from the MLB office saying to not do it? Can you imagine what sort of letter/phone call that would generate?

It's at least 50% overslot.

Maybe as much as 100% overslot.

These two things are not both apples.

You have to see the difference between signing an 11th-rounder for $350k and giving the first pick of the 2nd round $1.5 million and a ML contract.

Why can’t you ever accept that your little hypothetical scenarios are idiotic? Why do you have to continually defend them instead of saying “yeah, if the Pirates signed Bell for $9 million, regardless of how they structured it, MLB would flip their shit out.”

Theres a difference sure

But I dont think its as vast as you make it out to be.

And the whole how its structured point does make a difference. A 9 million dollar signing bonus and a 9 million dollar ML contract are two completely different things and thus would fall under different types of scrutiny.

If it was a straight bonus then yes the commish’s office would probably come down with the hammer and say something. But if its a ML deal which teams only have a certain amount of to give away with a reasonable signing bonus (based on where he was projected to go) I don’t think it causes much consternation in MLBs offices

I don't think Beltran will veto a trade here.

If he was, he’d tell people. It’s not in his interest to dick the Mets around… he holds all the cards.

by Brad on Jul 26, 2011 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Dicking the Mets

would be to announce right at the beginning that half his suitors are out. Given that most of the suitors are NL clubs anyway, it’s in the best interest of the Mets to play all of the competing offers against each other with the intention of trading him to an NL club in the end.

by ab03 on Jul 26, 2011 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Didn't he already do that?

By saying he’d prefer the NL and wouldn’t accept a trade in which he’ll DH?

I don’t think he cares about protecting the Mets to make sure they get the best offer. I’m not saying he’s trying to aid them in a positive way.

But if the Mets get Texas to agree with a deal and then he turns around and vetoes it, it just wastes everyone’s time.

It’s possible that he has told the Mets that he isn’t going to accept any trade to the AL and they asked him to keep that quiet and say otherwise to the media and he’s agreed. But having Texas seem like they are in it if they really aren’t isn’t in HIS best interests.

That may drive Philly to try harder for Pence and not bother with him because they don’t want to try and compete with our farm.

It’s in his best honest to limit the suitors to exactly what he wants.

by Brad on Jul 26, 2011 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions

It might waste people's time

but I bet it’s a strong possibility and if he really didn’t want to go to an AL team, he wouldn’t announce it now (and the Mets wouldn’t want him to)

by ab03 on Jul 26, 2011 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Your last three sentences are absurd

Competition isn’t in his best interest because the NL teams will all drop out at the specter of trying to compete with the AL teams? I doubt that’s how it would go down.

by ab03 on Jul 26, 2011 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

They might focus on trying for other assets.

Rather than him if they think the cost is too high.

If Beltran is dead set on going to Philly or SF, having more teams bid on him isn’t in his best interests, only the Mets.

by Brad on Jul 26, 2011 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

So it is still your contention that if Beltran doesn't want to go to an AL team

he would announce it to everybody right now and that would not be “dicking the Mets” as much as letting the Mets negotiate with Texas and then veto the trade (when more likely the Mets already know he doesn’t want to go to an AL team and thus would never get that far)?

Because that is incorrect.

I bet he ends up with an NL team

by ab03 on Jul 26, 2011 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree that would be adverse to the Mets.

Instead of using the phrase “dicking around” I should have just used “wasted time”.

I expect the Mets know EXACTLY who he will accept and won’t already. That may or may not include AL teams. But I don’t think Beltran would let the Mets accept an offer from Texas to then veto it. Especially as close to the deadline as we are.

It’s very possible that Beltran told the Mets “No AL” and they Mets asked him to let them negotiate with them on the table to get the best deal… and he may have agreed to that in the interest of being a professional.

That allows the Mets to keep Texas and Boston around as suitors and drive the price up without actually saying “Yes” to a Texas or Boston offer.

But… if Beltran is only concerned about himself, it’s not in his best interests to have his price driven up if he wants to pick his team.

And given the mixed statements we’ve heard… I’m not sure what Beltran’s actual opinion is. If he really wanted to help the Mets and keep teams in the hunt that he’s ruled out… why say anything at all? Why this “no DH” definitive response? Wouldn’t he just be completely mute on the subject?

Also… I’ll take you up on that bet [I don’t really think I’ll win… I just like making internet bets]. What do you want to bet?

Not for a while.

I can’t help but think it’s in the “use it to get everyone talking about realignment and baseball instead of the NBA or NFL” phase.

He must have been the one who passed a bit more – I remember they platooned. He still rushed for more than he passed, but not by the ratio I remember Rice QBs normally having.

I figured he was still at 1B and just blocked by Votto which is why he was being mentioned in trades so much

Yeah, I assume when Votto signed that three year extension last year

Yonder decided he may want to try another position. But I don’t see anything that makes him a great upgrade in his minor numbers, especially as a OFer. I can’t imagine it’s his defense since he just moved positions.
