2011 MLB All Star Game -- American League All Star Roster

The American League roster for the 2011 MLB All Star Game has been announced, and is as follows:

DH David Ortiz
C Alex Avila
1B Adrian Gonzalez
2B Robinson Cano
SS Derek Jeter
3B Alex Rodriguez
OF Jose Bautista
OF Curtis Granderson
OF Josh Hamilton

Reserves:

C Matt Wieters
OF Jacoby Ellsbury
OF Carlos Quentin
SS Asdrubal Cabrera
1B Miguel Cabrera
2B Howie Kendrick
OF Michael Cuddyer
C Russell Martin
OF Matt Joyce
3B Adrian Beltre
DH Michael Young

Pitchers:

RP Chris Perez
RP Jose Valverde
RP Aaron Crow
SP Josh Beckett
RP Mariano Rivera
SP Gio Gonzalez
SP Felix Hernandez
SP Justin Verlander
RP Brandon League
SP David Price
SP James Shields
SP Jered Weaver
SP C.J. Wilson

I'm a little surprised the Rangers got four guys into the game...I thought one of Beltre and Young would get picked, but not both.  Both Beltre and Young were voted in by the players as part of their picks.

Alexi Ogando, Elvis Andrus and Ian Kinsler are the players who seemed to be in the mix for a slot, but who fell short.  Elvis has been better than Jeter this season, of course, but you know how that goes...

Jeter got voted into another AS starting lineup he had no business being in. It sucks so much that this has just become a yearly thing.

well

when you’re on the margins of the 6-10 best pitchers in the league; then you may or may not make it. And little things (or big things…) like your team being the league champs can – and should – matter. It is one thing when managers put undeserving guys from their team on the roster. It is another thing when you put a guy who is only arguably better than a couple of other guys. If a virtual tie exists (say between Haren, CJ, CC and Pineda), Wash should get to choose his guy. It isn’t like he picked Feliz.

Here is the deal with Beltre

He’s not a disappointment in the abstract, but the Rangers gave him a giant contract that makes you kind of hope for more than that. If he’s going to be a 5 Win player throughout the deal, then great. But odds are, he’s going to decline a bit going forward. You kind of want him to be a 6 or 6.5 win guy, at least, this year so that when the inevitable decline phase sets in you have banked some value early on in his deal.

He’s not a disappointment, but he’s not a bargain either. And as we saw with Michael Young – simply playing at your long-term contracts value in its first year can come back and sting towards the end.

The offense is right in the mix of best offenses in the non-NY/BOS category (and I would probably be able to argue is the best on that tier), and better than last year.

In the AL, teams are scoring almost .2 runs less per game, OBP is down six points, and SLG is down 10 points.

I can't find it quickly,

But I thought I got you on record as saying that if Beltre hit 5.0 WAR this year, that he would likely hit the ~16 WAR he needs yo be worth his contract. If you use the standard 0.5 WAR decline/rule of thumb from this point, you are talking about ~20 WAR over the next 5 years. A more aggressive decline projection still has him being worth his contract, though now you seem to be wanting him to exceed the contract value per WAR to be worth it?

He's on pace to be a 5 WAR player right now

That is with a .254 BABIP and a 17% LD rate. I’d be shocked if that continues as that is almost 40 points below Beltre’s career average. I’d expect his hitting to improve more as the BABIP regresses some more to have him surpass that 5 WAR mark. That WAR would be his 3rd best season in his career. I don’t see anything wrong with that at all.

If you give Beltre 6 years, $96 million at his age, he’s got to give you more than a 768 OPS in year 1. That’s why he’s disappointing.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 3, 2011 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions

yep

the worry I have is that I would think his stellar defense is the thing most likely to decline sooner with age. Maybe (Hopefully) I’m wrong. But we’re actually seeing a bat decline already (and to be fair, Beltre is notoriously volatile with his bat – he may be a .920 guy next year or the rest of this year), then the last few years of this deal are going to be pretty painful.

It's a bit hard to say, due to the league-wide decline in offense

So far, with the ball-park adjusted wOBA from statcorner, Beltre is about 3% above the league average in hitting. Other than years when he goes critical mass, 5% above league average is about as good has he had hit in his career.

So the question is if we are looking at a hitter’s pure numbers, or how he hits relative to the league. Pure-number wise, he is down about 10-20 points in wOBA compared to his best years in Seattle, but not anything that deviates significantly from a career norm. Relative to the league, he is the same hitter as he always has been other than the two insane years.

My problem isn't with All-Star games

Popularity contests, undeserving Yankee motherfuckers, bla bla bla….I agree with all those arguments, but the All-Star Game was about as relevant as a Gold Glove or Silver Slugger award….

…UNTIL they made it determine home field advantage in the World Serires. That took a trivial, meaningless event and turned it into a potential injustice. And yeah, I probably didn’t grouse about it as much until my home team actually got good enough to potentially make it to the Big Dance.

That's pretty cool
With over 7.4 million votes, Jose Bautista set a new record for the most ballots ever cast for a player in All-Star game history

by sprite on Jul 3, 2011 12:27 PM CDT reply actions

I've recently become a big Bautista fan

My initial reaction to last year was the typical “oh that fucker has to be ’roiding.”

But look at him. The dude isn’t big at all. And he’s replicating an amazing season with an even more amazing season. And his home stadium isn’t exactly a launch pad.

Pretty damn impressive.

his home stadium is one of the more homer friendly stadiums in the league

No one ever said it wasn't possible.

Just that it wouldn’t make sense.

When they put Young’s graphic up, it said “IF”.

In what possible world is Young a more deserving IF than Kinsler? He can’t play defense… his wOBA is lower.

Young’s having a nice year and I’m happy he’s bounced back after last year… but aside from one statistic, Batting Average, Kinsler is more deserving.

There were some

who claimed it wasn’t possible. Im not saying MY deserved it more, but I laid out a reasonable argument for how it could happen and that was dismissed pretty quickly.

Ron doesn’t have the animosity with these guys that fans do.

Ron is old school and will give Jeter more respect than any other player on that roster.

ugh...

Getting a lot of hate from Sporting News Radio on The Ticket. The hosts are pissed that CC got snubbed, also reporting fans putting a lot of Wash hate on Twitter.

These idiots don’t realise Wash knows what he’s doing. CC will be asked to replace one of the guys who can’t start. It’s maddening how uneducated the casual fan is.

I'm trying to understand why Sporting News Radio...

…is giving Travis Rodgers and Sean Pendergast their own national shows. They aren’t good, even for the type of Rome-wannabe schtick that they do.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 3, 2011 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

SNR is garbage.

All their hosts are not just Jim Rome types, but caricatures of Rome. Some of my favorite moments on the Ticket are when the Hardline listens in to what’s happening on SNR and just die laughing at how bad they are.

…..neglected to tell him they also needed an Exchange server until this morning.

that and Wash is trying to win the game

and both Price and Wilson are proven “out of the bullpen” arms. Whereas CC may or may not be a great lefty in a tight spot late guy.

Asdrubal Cabrera has been way better with the bat, but Jeter hasn’t been Jeter for years.

Ah well, maybe the vaunted Yankee Captain (blech) will retire next year.

Peralta was better than Andrus

“Elvis has been better than Jeter this season, of course, but you know how that goes”

Absurd statement. Elvis has a .667 OPS and 16 errors. He is awful. Short stops should be Cabrera and Peralta. Andrus has no business even attending the all-star game.

Also, though CJ Wilson has been good, Sabathia is more deserving.
