Ron Washington shaking up the lineup

PHOENIX, AZ - JULY 12: American League All-Star manager Ron Washington #38 of the Texas Rangers and National League All-Star manager Bruce Bochy #15 of the San Francisco Giants exchange lineup cards prior to the 82nd MLB All-Star Game at Chase Field on July 12, 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona. (Photo by Jeff Gross/Getty Images)

After "fuming" yesterday over the lack of execution by the Rangers hitters yesterday, Ron Washington is rolling with a rather unique lineup today:

Ian Kinsler, 2b
Mitch Moreland, rf
Endy Chavez, cf

This has the potential to be ugly.  No Hamilton, but it is a day game against a lefty, so he might as well sit.  Andrus is getting a day off as well.

But when you've got Moreland hitting 5th against a lefty, and Murphy, Davis and Chavez also in the lineup against a lefthanded starter, that's...worrisome.  Of course, whenever Washington rolls out one of these weirdo lineups, the Rangers seem to score a half-dozen runs, so I'll hold off getting too worked up about it...

Bruce Bochy's head

is so large it took me a minute to realize that Quintanilla hitting 2nd.

I respect Wash’s leadership skills, but I’m skeptical of the assumption that things need to be shaken up just because players didn’t “execute” in a couple of at bats. Is “executing” as simple as wanting it to happen? There is no skill or chance involved at all? It’s all a matter of whether or not the player tried hard? sigh.

The execution failure to me was Endy Chavez bunting towards third base when trying to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd.

Why not drag one down the first base line, where the only play is to first? That’s not chance or skill, that’s poor execution.

by 3hacks on Jul 30, 2011 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Bunting toward 3rd

Was the right play. It just has to be bunted hard enough to make the third baseman field it so the only play is to first. You can’t let the pitcher field it.

It is really going to be a lefty heavy lineup no matter what with Beltre, Cruz and Gentry out.

The only difference would be having the righthanded bat of Andrus at SS rather than Quintanilla.

Given his recent history, he’ll either throw a 2 hit shutout, in which case this lineup should score at least a run, or he’ll give up 6 runs, in which case it doesn’t matter who we have out there anyway.

WHAT THE HELL

From Beetlejuice’s Trade Stuff.

One local beat reporter writes this morning that "[a]t some point in the next 24 hours, the Rangers should complete a trade for Padres reliever Heath Bell," adding that "what this comes down to is what crown jewels of the farm system – if any – the Rangers are willing to give up for Bell. The Rangers in the past have shown a reluctance – whether it’s dollars or players – to invest heavily in the bullpen. But they do have the resources – possibly a pitcher and middle-of-the-diamond player – to make this deal."

I don’t actually read the articles unless they grab me, but who the shit is this? Are they really suggesting… Jesus fuck.

I really dont think so

we’ll see, one of the definitely could get dealt, but I highly doubt both just for RP. Erlin top 40 spec and Wieland likely top 75 or so at the end of the year, I dont think thats the going price for rent-a-reliever.

Plus, I think Rangers like those two too much to deal both, even if thats the actual market price of relievers.

by colonialbob on Jul 30, 2011 10:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I'm already changing my mind.

Erlin+Wieland is better than the 2 picks coming back from Bell, and apparently they will get Bell back after the season anyway…maybe for a discount. So in the end it ends up being Erlin+Wieland for Adams (looking at 2012). I would think the Padres have jump on that.

by AjaxJones on Jul 30, 2011 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

We don't want Bell after the season anyway...

And I feel pretty confident that with those 2 picks we can get at least one player about equal to an Erlin or a Wieland. Plus Adams is pretty good and we’d get him all of next year too…

It isn’t that these aren’t great prospects. But those two guys would make the Rangers bullpen the one of the best in the AL instead of the worst come playoff time. That is a huge upgrade.

Bullpens are not worthless. And when you can improve them with any degree of certainty (not absolute, but some) for a reasonable cost (not free, but reasonable) you have to do it.

Why isn't Hamilton getting called out for not taking the gift of an automatic base by bunt when the ridiculous overshift is put on for him?

Hitters, including sluggers, are expected to draw walks, so why wouldn’t an near-certain single by bunt be expected if offered?

by 3hacks on Jul 30, 2011 10:29 AM CDT reply actions

none of the big sluggers bunt

but I do think Hamilton should work on it. You have to bunt it hard enough so the pitcher can’t make a play on it, which isnt really easy like some think. But on this turf, you’d hope Hambone would try it.

Yeah, that's my point.

It’s not a knock on Hamilton alone but on the truism that sluggers don’t bunt. It’s dumb.

I was glad to see Moreland try to bunt on strike 1 last night against the overshift, but I’m not sure why it wasn’t worth trying again on the second strike. They didn’t take away their shift in response to his bunt attempt. Who cares if they aren’t surprised anymore. They’re out of position to make a play on a bunt.

its tough to get it by a pitcher if you aren’t an accomplished bunter, especially a lhp who falls off towards third base side. Id really like to see them work on it b/c its a silly thing not to work on.

with Wash as the manager you figure he would tell Josh give it a try, a few times, maybe they would stop the shift after awhile

We went there once, when I was like 12 or 13

It was white trash heaven.

We only went there because I was overruled on my suggestion to go see wrestling at Amon Carter.

i thought it was weird that JD and the entire front office traveled with the team this weekend.

who tells players where they are going, demoted, etc?

is it the manager? or does JD call agents or what?

Apropos of not really anything but

the Rangers bat with the platoon advantage 44% of the time. AL Average is 57%. The only AL team lower than the Rangers is Toronto at 38%.

NYY, Tampa, and Boston all sit in the mid-60’s in that regard.

Oh, and we also have the lowest pitching PLTN% in the majors (product of having three lefties in the roto, though.).

If it does happen it won't be cause of Cashman

but Steinbrenners. Don’t see Cashman shelling out all the prospects that Colorado wants.

LoL is dead. Pretty much no discussion of the Fister trade.

Tigers fan made a fanpost detailing the prospects, there is one comment. And there is one other comment on it in the latest front page post.

Mariners fans should be really happy about that trade, too.

Martinez is a good 3B prospect.

the “prospect” would be a top guy and then probably a few other pieces would included.

yea, and Im all over it

would love to get Danks to replace Holland. He seems like the perfect guy to have #2 or #3 in a playoff rotation. Plus Thornton is awesome when not broken.

heh

I can see Holland for Danks straight up – White Sox assume uncertainty for several years of control.

Still need something interestinf or Thornton though.

Holland + 2nd tier pitcher for the two of them? Ninja…

Boy, that Engel Beltre sure does have himself a lot of tools

And that Tommy Mendonca? He sure does hit dingers.

I’d hate for either of them to be involved.

Thornton actually seems to fit our pen perfectly

he’s an 8th inning power guy who can replace our worst RP perfectly because he’s LH and would continue to allow us to use Lefty and righty matchups with Yoshi/O’day and Thornton/Oliver.

No Cruz, Beltre or Hamilton, this may get ugly

with little power in the lineup they will have to play a lot of small ball to have a chance at this one, let’s hope they can find a way. hope Cruz and Beltre can get back soon.
